1 REGULAR SEASON GAME #8 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (4-3) AT ST. LOUIS RAMS (4-3) GOVERNOR S CUP SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5, :00 PM (CENTRAL) EDWARD JONES DOME ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI TV: CBS Regional Coverage (KCTV-5 in Kansas City) Don Criqui and Steve Beuerlein. RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs and the Rams will square off in the latest installment of the Governor s Cup series when the Chiefs travel to the Edward Jones Dome for their first regular season contest in St. Louis since 97. Head coach Herm Edwards has guided KC to victories in four of its last five contests. The Chiefs are now 4-3 and are within striking distance of Denver (5-2) and San Diego (5-2) in the AFC West standings. KC has posted back-to-back victories at home and will be seeking to register its first three-game winning streak under Edwards. The Chiefs rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to capture a win last week vs. Seattle (10/29) after claiming a win vs. San Diego (10/22) thanks to a last-second 53-yard FG from K Lawrence Tynes. Kansas City s 4-1 October run has been remarkable considering that two-time Pro Bowl QB Trent Green has been sidelined since suffering a head injury on Opening Day vs. Cincinnati (9/10). Green, who was acquired in a trade with St. Louis in 2001, triggered an offense that averaged an NFL-best yards per game from However, the Chiefs have rallied behind 10-year NFL veteran QB Damon Huard in Green s absence. Huard has led Kansas City to a 4-2 record as the club s starter and currently ranks third in the NFL with a rating, trailing only Colts QB Peyton Manning (108.0) and Rams QB Marc Bulger (101.3). Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson has registered 342 yards of total offense and six TDs the past two games, while seven-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez has recorded back-to-back 100-yard receiving games. Meanwhile, the Chiefs defense has forced five turnovers in Kansas City s last two victories and has allowed an average of just 72.0 rushing yards per game in those contests. St. Louis has enjoyed a revival of sorts under first-year head coach Scott Linehan. After losing six of their last eight games to close out the 2005 campaign, Linehan has the Rams off to a 4-3 start in The Rams are attempting to snap a two-game losing streak after suffering a loss last week at San Diego (10/29). Up next for Kansas City is a road trip to Miami (11/12), while St. Louis travels to Seattle (11/12) STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS RAMS Total Offense (16) (21) Rush Offense (14) 98.6 (20) Pass Offense (14) (16) Total Defense (10) (15) Rush Defense (17) (8) Pass Defense (7) (25) Turnover Ratio (17t) +10 (3) Pts./Game (13t) 23.3 (8) Opp. Pts./Game (20) 23.7(23) THE SERIES The Chiefs own a 4-4 record in regular season play vs. St. Louis, including a 3-0 mark since the Rams became in-state rivals. Those 88 total points were also the second-highest total ever scored in a Chiefs game. Kansas City posted a victory in the only previous regular season meeting between these two franchises in St. Louis (10/26/97). Dick Vermeil was in his initial year as the Rams head coach and Marty Schottenheimer was leading the Chiefs on-field fortunes. The Rams own a (.587) record against AFC opponents since the start of the 95 campaign. After Kansas City claimed a win at St. Louis (10/26/97), the Rams have produced a remarkable 16-1 (.941) home record against AFC opponents at the Edward Jones Dome. The only home loss by St. Louis against an AFC opponent over that span was a loss vs. New England (11/7/04). 4 Chiefs Seek to Extend Their Winning Streak to Three Games at St. Louis by Pete Moris Chiefs, Rams Both Seeking a 5-3 Record at the Midseason Mark Dating back to 2003, 31 of 36 playoff teams (86.1%) have been 5-3 or better after eight games. The 2005 Patriots (4-4) were the only AFC team over the past three seasons that have qualified for the postseason without having a winning record at the midseason mark. Over that same timeframe, four NFC squads have made the playoffs with a.500 record after eight games, including the 2004 Rams. Solid Scoring Defense is a Must at St. Louis Kansas City s defense has allowed an average of 19.7 offensive points per game in Keeping the score down is imperitive this week for the Chiefs. Kansas City will be facing a St. Louis squad that owns a 26-2 (.929) record at home when scoring 30 points or more dating back to the 99 season. Prior to suffering a loss vs. Seattle (10/9), the Rams owned a streak of 13 straight home wins when topping the 30-point barrier. The Chiefs are just 3-11 (.214) on the road since 2001 when allowing 30 points or more and haven t won a road game when giving up over 30 points since registering a victory at Tennessee (12/13/04). Since Gunther Cunningham returned to Kansas City as the Chiefs defensive coordinator in 2004, KC has allowed an average of 23.3 ppg in the club s seven road wins over that span. The Rams are just 5-6 (.455) at home since the start of the 2005 campaign and have been held to 22.0 ppg in those six losses. KC has averaged 32.3 ppg in its four wins in Chiefs Must Slow Down St. Louis Early in the Game After falling behind in the first quarter of the club s last two road contests, Kansas City s defense will need a strong early effort against a St. Louis squad that ranks fifth in the league in first-half scoring with 93 points. The Rams have scored 38.7% of their points (63 of 163) in the second quarter this season. Only Chicago (74) and San Diego (67) have scored more points in the second quarter than St. Louis. In fact, only Chicago (+62 points) owns a bigger second-quarter scoring differential than St. Louis and San Diego (+36 points). The Chiefs have held four opponents scoreless in the first quarter this season and will need to sustain that performance at St. Louis. The Chiefs have also allowed just 20 points in the third quarter. The Rams have lost six home games dating back to last season. St. Louis has led in three of those contests at halftime and has trailed by just three points in those other three losses. In total, St. Louis has been outscored by a margin in the second half of those six setbacks. Scoring last may be the best way to beat the Rams. St. Louis has relinquished the final score of the game in six of its last seven losses dating back to Huard, Bulger Two of the NFL s Best at Avoiding INTs Chiefs QB Damon Huard and Rams QB Marc Bulger have been the NFL s two best signal callers in terms of avoiding INTs this season. Bulger owns a league-best 0.4 INT percentage, throwing just one INT on 248 attempts, while Huard ranks second in that category with a 0.5 INT percentage, having just one of his 188 attempts picked off. Bulger (101.3) and Huard (100.4) also rank second and third respectively in the league behind Colts QB Peyton Manning (108.0) in terms of passer rating. Bulger leads the NFL with five rating games this season, while Huard is tied for second with four such contests. The Rams are 14-5 (.737) when Bulger posts a rating game. Meanwhile, Huard boasts a 5-0 career mark when producing a rating game, including a 4-0 record with Kansas City this season. KC s defense has allowed just one opposing QB to post a rating game this season (Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger 153.8). The Rams are just 1-8 (.889) when allowing an opposing QB to post a rating or better dating back to 2005, including an 0-3 mark this season. NFL LEADERS, LOWEST INT PERCENTAGE, 2006 Player Comp-Atts Yards TDs INTs INT Pct. Rating 1. Bulger, STL , % Huard, KC , % Manning, IND , % *Minimum 100 completions KC s Defense Must Slow Down RB Steven Jackson Dating back to 96, the Rams are 39-1 (.975) when producing a 100- yard rusher. The lone blemish on that record came earlier this year when RB Steven Jackson produced 103 yards in a loss vs. San Francisco (9/17). The Rams are 5-1 (.833) when Jackson tops the 100-yard mark. Jackson ranks fifth in the NFL, averaging yards from scrimmage per game. Chiefs RB Larry Johnson (139.0 ypg) leads the NFL in that area. Kansas City s defense has allowed just 77.3 rushing ypg in the club s four wins this season and has permitted just two 100-yard rushers in the team s last 30 games. Kansas City has not allowed a rushing TD in the club s four victories in St. Louis has three rushing TDs on the season. Only Houston, Minnesota and Oakland (2) have fewer. The Rams Have Reversed The Turnover Table Under Linehan St. Louis head coach Scott Linehan has helped reverse the Rams turnover fortunes in dramatic fashion. No NFL team committed more turnovers than St. Louis (76) in After finishing a combined -34 (42 takes/76 gives) over the past two seasons, the Rams are third in the NFL at +10 (16 takes/6 gives) under Linehan in In fact, the Rams defense has forced an NFL-high six turnovers in the Red Zone this season. St. Louis has frequently capitalized on their opponents miscues, producing 46 points off turnovers to rank eighth in the NFL. Although the Rams have committed at least one turnover in 48 consecutive losses dating back to 98, the math has been simple for St. Louis this season. The Rams are 4-0 with a positive turnover ratio in 2006, boasting a +12 mark (14 takes/2 gives) in those games and are -2 (2 takes/4 gives) in their three losses. Kansas City is +4 (10 takes/6 gives) in its four victories this season. The Chiefs have won six consecutive games with a positive turnover differential dating back to LJ s Stats at the 40-Game Mark of His Chiefs Career Chiefs RB Larry Johnson will play in his 40th contest in a Kansas City uniform on Sunday. Johnson already ranks fifth in franchise history with 38 rushing TDs, a remarkable average of two rushing TDs per start during his young pro career. RB Priest Holmes owns the Chiefs career records for rushing TDs (76) and rushing yardage (5,933). At the 40-game mark of his KC career, Holmes had registered 29 rushing TDs and 3,170 rushing yards. Johnson has produced 3,060 yards and 38 TDs after 39 games with KC. However, Holmes had the benefit of starting his first 40 games with the Chiefs, while Johnson will make just his 20th start on Sunday. Johnson has averaged a rushing TD once every 17.1 rushing attempts and owns 17 career 100-yard games, both of which rank as the secondhighest totals in franchise history. Holmes registered his yard games in 61 career appearances, an average of a 100-yard game once every 2.5 games, while Johnson has averaged a 100-yard outing once every 2.3 games. The Chiefs are 13-4 (.765) when Johnson posts a 100- yard game. Kansas City also boasts a 10-2 (.833) mark in games when Johnson scores two or more rushing TDs. St. Louis is 3-8 (.273) dating back to last season when allowing a 100- yard back. Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson produced 183 rushing yards against the Rams last week. In total, St. Louis relinquished 216 rushing yards at San Diego (10/29), marking the sixth time since 2004 that the Rams have allowed 200 or more team rushing yards. Johnson set a single-game franchise record with 39 rushing attempts last week and is on pace to finish the year with 393 carries, a mark that would break the current Chiefs single-season record of 370 carries established by RB Christian Okoye in 89. 7 THE LAST GAME Chiefs 35, Seahawks 28 October 29, 2006 Arrowhead Stadium 77,645 SEATTLE KANSAS CITY The Chiefs dominated most aspects vs. Seattle, but narrowly pulled out the shootout win at Arrowhead Stadium. Despite piling up 499 yards of offense and holding the ball for over 42 of the 60 minutes, Kansas City needed late-game heroics and four TDs from RB Larry Johnson to pull out the thrilling win. Chiefs QB Damon Huard who was a game-time decision to play after suffering a groin injury in practice that week turned in a career-high 312 passing yards and a rating. Trailing 3-0, Seattle LB Julian Peterson made the first gamechanging play of the afternoon, sacking and stripping Huard. The fumble at the Chiefs seven-yard line resulted in a sevenyard TD pass from QB Seneca Wallace to WR D.J. Hackett. The Chiefs answered right back as Johnson ripped off a 38- yard run, then finished off the drive with a three-yard TD dive for a 10-7 Chiefs lead. Johnson would finish with 155 yards rushing yards on a franchise single-game record 39 carries. Kansas City added another field goal before Wallace brought the Seahawks back with a three-yard TD pass to TE Jerramy Stevens to grab a late in the first half. The Chiefs snuck in another touchdown just before halftime as Huard found WR Eddie Kennison on gains of 19 and 18 yards before he dumped off a short pass to Johnson over the middle for a nine-yard TD pass and a halftime cushion. Kansas City s defense forced a punt on the opening possession of the second half and the offense marched off a lengthy touchdown drive to take the first two-score lead of the afternoon. Johnson and RB Michael Bennett accounted for 63 of the Chiefs 88 yards on the drive that took 6:51 off the clock. Johnson capped the scoring march with a two-yard TD dive from Johnson, giving KC a lead. The momentum turned back to Seattle when Chiefs P Dustin Colquitt fumbled trying to pass after dropping a field goal snap. Seahawks CB Kelly Herndon scooped up the bizarre fumble and returned it 61 yards for a TD, bringing the score to late in the third quarter. The Seahawks then took advantage of a missed Chiefs field goal as Wallace fired a 49-yard TD to a wideopen WR Darrell Jackson for a lead with 6:30 remaining. The stage was set for the Chiefs late-game heroics as Huard first dropped a beautiful 51-yard bomb to WR Eddie Kennison down to the Seattle seven-yard line. From there, Johnson found the end zone for the fourth time of the day, this time on a threeyard run. Huard converted the two-point try with a pass to TE Tony Gonzalez giving KC a lead with just 2:15 remaining. The Chiefs defense appeared to have won the game when DE Tamba Hali tipped a Wallace pass into the arms of Jared Allen for an interception. However, Allen fumbled the return and inexplicably gave the ball back to Seattle with 1:58 left. The Seahawks could get no deeper than the Chiefs 41-yard line as LB Derrick Johnson sacked Wallace on third down and Law tackled FB Mack Strong on fourth down to preserve the Chiefs win. GAME NOTES RB Larry Johnson established Chiefs single-game records for rushing attempts (39) and total attempts from scrimmage (41), breaking the previous record of 38 (38 rushes, 0 receptions) established by RB Christian Okoye at Green Bay (12/10/89).
