THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs will be seeking to get back on the winning track when AFC West rival Oakland visits Arrowhead on Sunday. Kansas City is back home this week after splitting a pair of games in a coast-to-coast road swing. After claiming a win at Miami (10/21), the Chiefs suffered a loss last week at San Diego (10/30), but are still in second place in the AFC West with a 4-3 mark. A victory will be imperative for Kansas City this week with Denver (6-2) sitting atop the division standings and San Diego (4-4) and Oakland (3-4) lurking close behind the Chiefs. Kansas City owns an 8-4 record over its last 12 games dating back to last season. Only Indianapolis (11-1), Pittsburgh (9-2 prior to MNF) and Denver (9-3) boast better records over that span than the Chiefs and Patriots (8-4). After starting the year 0-3, the suddenly-resurgent Raiders have now won three out of their last four contests, including a win last week at Tennessee (10/30). That victory vs. the Titans marked just the third road victory for the Silver and Black dating back to This week the Raiders will be seeking to register back-to-back road wins for the first time since the club s Super Bowl XXXVII season in Kansas City owns a five-game victory string against the Raiders. The Chiefs last five wins against Oakland have all come by seven points or less and all five have been decided in the game s waning moments. KC prevailed in the most recent clash of these former AFL foes by a margin at Oakland (9/18) when S Sammy Knight broke up a pass intended for Raiders WR Jerry Porter in the end zone. Thanks to QB Trent Green, the Chiefs passing game has been increasingly productive of late. Green threw for a season-high 347 yards last week, while WR Eddie Kennison had 115 yards. Over his last two games, TE Tony Gonzalez has racked up 14 catches for 164 yards. Up next for the Chiefs is a two-game road swing that features a contest at Buffalo (11/13) and a Sunday Night Football outing at Houston (11/20). A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame s Class of 2003, Stram served as the franchise s head coach from , compiling a regular season record and a 5-3 playoff mark. He guided the club to three AFL titles and a win in Super Bowl IV. His many contributions to the game include the two-tight end offense, the stack defense and the moving pocket. Among Stram s many big wins against Oakland was a 17-7 win in the 69 AFL Championship Game (1/4/69). REMEMBERING P JERREL WILSON ( ) The Chiefs also lost another link to their Super Bowl IV squad this offseason when P Jerrel Wilson passed away on April 9th. Wilson served as the club s punter from and still holds an NFL record by leading the league in punting four times ( 65, 68, 72-73). A member of the AFL s All- Time Team, he was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 88. Wilson came to the Chiefs from Southern Mississippi, the same school that also produced longtime Raiders P Ray Guy. Arguably two of the finest punters in pro football history, Wilson s 43.4-yard career average was actually a full yard better than Guy s 42.4-yard mark, leading Rick Cleveland of the Clarion (MS) Ledger to say this of Wilson after his death: He was Ray Guy before Ray Guy. Norv Turner was named the 14th head coach in Raiders history on January 26, 2004 after spending the previous two years as Miami s offensive coordinator. In 2002, the Dolphins produced 2,502 rushing yards, the third-highest total in team history. Prior to a one-year stint as San Diego s offensive coordinator in 2001, Turner spent seven seasons ( 94-00) as head coach of the Redskins, posting a regular season record. He guided Washington to a 10-6 record and an NFC East title in 99, one of his four winning seasons in Washington. The LeJeune, North Carolina native served as Cowboys offensive coordinator for three seasons ( 91-93), earning Super Bowl XXVII and XXVIII rings. Prior to joining Dallas, Turner coached six years ( 85-90) with the L.A. Rams, tutoring both the receivers and tight ends. He spent nine seasons ( 76-84) at USC and was part of the Trojans 78 National Championship squad and four Rose Bowl champion teams. He entered the coaching profession as a graduate assistant with Oregon in 75. Born May 17, 1952 Turner was a three-time letterman at quarterback for the Ducks, spending two seasons behind Hall of Fame QB Dan Fouts. RB LARRY JOHNSON S PRODUCTION VS. 7 THE LAST GAME Chargers 28, Chiefs 20 October 30, 2005 Qualcomm Stadium 65,750 KANSAS CITY SAN DIEGO After a second-half comeback bid fell short, the Chiefs dropped a decision at San Diego. Trailing 21-3 at halftime, the Chiefs outscored the Chargers by a 17-7 margin in the second half, but it was not enough to secure a victory. San Diego started the scoring when QB Drew Brees found TE Antonio Gates on the right sideline for a 19-yard score and a 7-0 lead. Later in the first half Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson was doing the throwing, hooking up with WR Eric Parker for a 17-yard TD pass on a halfback option toss. Tomlinson s third TD pass of the season was about all the noise he made as Kansas City s defense held the Pro Bowl RB to just 69 rushing yards on the day. DE Jared Allen forced a WR Reche Caldwell fumble which set up the Chiefs first score. RB Larry Johnson s 46-yard run was the big play on the drive which culminated with a 34-yard K Lawrence Tynes field goal. San Diego bounced right back, extending its lead to 21-3 on another Brees-to-Gates TD. On Kansas City s second possession of the third quarter QB Trent Green s 36-yard pass to TE Tony Gonzalez set up a 16- yard TD to Gonzalez on the very next play. Gonzalez finished the game with seven catches for 97 yards and helped cut the Chargers lead to Perhaps the biggest sequence of the game then followed. S Greg Wesley thwarted San Diego s ensuing drive when he picked off Brees, setting up the Chiefs at the San Diego 44-yard line. Green then marched to the Chargers 11-yard line, but was sacked and stripped by Chargers rookie LB Shawne Merriman, preventing KC from getting any points. After a 52-yard punt return by WR Dante Hall, Green moved the team to the SD 10-yard line, but the Chargers defense held the Chiefs to a FG to pull within early in the fourth quarter. But as was the case all afternoon, San Diego bounced right back with a scoring drive of their own. Gates posted his third TD and an imposing lead when he broke a tackle and raced into the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown catch. Green, who threw for 347 yards and two TDs on the day drove the Chiefs as deep as the San Diego three-yard line on Kansas City s next possession, but once again the Chargers defense rose to the occasion as Green s fourth-down pass fell incomplete with 4:23 remaining in the contest. After Kansas City s defense forced a three-and-out, the Chiefs drove and posted a seven-yard TD pass to WR Eddie Kennison (7-115), slicing the Chargers lead to with 2:12 left. However, the Chiefs could not recover Tynes onside kick attempt and the Chargers were able to grind off most of the remaining time on the clock and claim the victory. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez recorded the 55th TD reception of his career, moving him into a tie with E Chris Burford for second in Chiefs history. Those 55 TD catches are also the third-highest total by a tight end in NFL history. 12 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 23, Raiders 17 September 18, 2005 McAfee Coliseum 62,273 KANSAS CITY OAKLAND The Chiefs improved to 2-0 on the young season with a tense win at Oakland. A balanced offensive attack and gamesaving stop from the defense kept Kansas City s undefeated season alive. With the Chiefs leading with just under 5:00 left, a KC fumble gave Oakland the ball near midfield for one last chance. The Raiders penetrated deep into Kansas City territory, setting up a pivotal fourth-and-six play from the Chiefs 10-yard line. S Sammy Knight then broke up a pass in the end zone that was intended for WR Jerry Porter, sealing the victory. The Chiefs got the first break of the game when they recovered a muffed punt return at the Raiders 17-yard line. RB Priest Holmes converted a pair of fourth-down conversions including a touchdown dive on fourth-and-goal from the one-inch line to give the Chiefs a quick 7-0 lead. Late in the first quarter S Chris Carr s 34-yard punt return set the Raiders up in Chiefs territory. After an 18-yard pass to WR Randy Moss, RB LaMont Jordan punched in a one-yard TD run to knot the score at 7-7 on the first play of the second quarter. Kansas City fired right back with a 49-yard QB Trent Greento-WR Samie Parker pass, then a six-yard TD run from RB Larry Johnson to grab a 14-7 lead. The Chiefs caught another break when the Raiders had a TD called back on the next possession when Moss was flagged for offensive pass interference. The Chiefs defense then forced a 29-yard field goal, preserving the lead at K Lawrence Tynes added a 31-yard field goal for a lead at the break. The Raiders came out throwing in the second half. After the two clubs exchanged failed field goal tries, Collins found Moss on an impressive game-tying 64-yard touchdown. Like they had done all game, the Chiefs answered a Raiders score with one of their own. Taking over at their own 26-yard line, KC pounded out a 15-play drive that ate 9:18 off the clock. They converted two third downs and got as deep as the Oakland nine-yard line before settling for a Tynes 39-yard field goal on the final play of the third quarter to regain the lead at Oakland went three-and-out, but again the Chiefs could only cash in with a three-pointer. Another long drive this one covering 11 plays and 4:38 ended with a Tynes 42-yard field goal, keeping the Raiders within one score at After another Raiders punt, the Chiefs were looking to kill the clock and ice the game. Instead, a Parker fumble after a 23-yard completion handed the ball back to the Silver and Black with 4:52 left. The Kansas City defense took it from there, preserving the win with one final stand. GAME NOTES The Chiefs extended their winning streak over the Raiders to five games against the Raiders, the club s longest streak against Oakland since RB Larry Johnson extended his streak of games with a rushing TD to eight consecutive games, the second-longest string in KC history. TE Tony Gonzalez reached the 7,000-yard career receiving plateau, becoming just the fourth TE in NFL history to reach that mark, joining Shannon Sharpe (10, 060), Ozzie Newsome (7,980) and Jackie Smith (7,918).
