1 REGULAR SEASON GAME #3 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (0-2) VS. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (1-1*) *San Francisco hosts Philadelphia (9/24) SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, :00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI TV: FOX Regional Coverage (WDAF-4 in Kansas City) Chris Myers, Jayice Pearson and Jay Glazer. RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs are currently 0-2 and will enjoy a bye on Sunday, September 24th before resuming their schedule with a home date vs. San Francisco (10/1). Kansas City is coming off a tough 9-6 OT loss at Denver (9/17). After losing starting QB Trent Green to a head trauma in a setback on Opening Day vs. Cincinnati (9/10), the Chiefs battled the Broncos to a 6-6 tie after 60 minutes of play behind backup QB Damon Huard at INVESCO Field. Denver won the toss in overtime and the Chiefs didn t see the ball again as the Broncos claimed a 9-6 victory thanks to a 39-yard FG from K Jason Elam in the extra period. Despite the loss, Kansas City turned in one of its most dominant defensive performances in recent memory. The Chiefs held a 3-0 lead at halftime, marking the first time the franchise had pitched a first-half shutout at Denver since 61. Offensively, Huard completed 11 of his 12 pass attempts in the first half, while Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson racked up 167 yards of total offense, including 126 yards on the ground. The 49ers are currently 1-1 and have a home date vs. Philadelphia (9/24) before traveling to Arrowhead to face the Chiefs on October 1st. San Francisco registered its initial victory of the season with a home triumph vs. St. Louis (9/17). San Francisco bounced back to defeat the Rams after dropping a decision at Arizona (9/10). Since the NFL began scheduling bye weeks during the 90 season, this week marks the earliest date that Kansas City has ever enjoyed an open date. In fact, the Chiefs have only had their bye week fall in the month of September once before, enjoying a bye in Week Four of the 93 campaign (9/26/93). Kansas City was 2-1 that season prior to the bye and concluded the season as AFC West Champions with an 11-5 record, en route to the franchise s first-ever AFC Championship Game. Following the 49ers contest, the Chiefs embark on a two-game road swing with games at Arizona (10/8) and at Pittsburgh (10/15), marking KC s first visits to both Cardinals Stadium and Heinz Field STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS 49ERS Total Offense (21) (6) Rush Offense (8) (13) Pass Offense (27) (6) Total Defense (8) (18) Rush Defense (23) (16) Pass Defense (16) (18) Turnover Ratio (27t) -1 (18t) Pts./Game (29) 23.5 (11) Opp. Pts./Game (11) 23.5 (25) THE SERIES Kansas City has faced San Francisco just nine times in regular season play, with the 49ers holding a 6-3 advantage. The home team has won the last six contests in this series with the Chiefs claiming victories in the last two outings between these two squads at Arrowhead, including a 44-9 victory in San Francisco s most recent trip to Kansas City (11/30/97). The 49ers have won their last two regular season meetings with the Chiefs, both of which came at 3Com Park. The last Chiefs-49ers contest resulted in a win by the 49ers at San Francisco (11/10/02). In a much-ballyhooed 94 match-up between Hall of Fame QBs Joe Montana and Steve Young, Kansas City s defense stole the show before the second-largest in-stadium crowd (79,907) in Arrowhead history. The 49ers held a 14-7 lead in the second quarter before a LB Derrick Thomas sack of Young for a safety swung the game s momentum. Thomas would record 3.0 of Kansas City s 4.0 sacks on the day, Montana would throw two TDs, while 2003 Hall of Fame enshrinee RB Marcus Allen rushed for 114 yards as KC outscored SF 15-3 in the second half to record a win (9/11/94). The Chiefs also claimed a 44-9 win at Arrowhead (11/30/97), snapping an 11-game 49ers winning streak. QB Rich Gannon threw three TDs, KC s defense registered 5.0 sacks and the Chiefs special teams blocked a punt in that game which featured a pair of squads that would finish the season with identical 13-3 records.

Huard made his first start as a member of the Chiefs last week at Denver (9/17), subbing for an injured QB Trent Green. That contest marked the first time that a signal caller other than Green opened for the Chiefs since QB Elvis Grbac started at Atlanta (12/24/00). It was Huard s first start since he engineered a win for Miami at Indianapolis (11/26/00). Huard s span of 2,121 days between starts marked the fifth-longest such gap by a QB dating back to 90. If Huard opens against San Francisco, it will mark just his second start against an NFC club. He registered a win in his only previous start against an NFC foe, leading Miami to a victory vs. Philadelphia (10/24/99) in the first start of his NFL career. 6 THE LAST TIME 49ers 17, Chiefs 13 November 10, Com Park 67,881 KANSAS CITY SAN FRANCISCO Kansas City s defense pitched a second-half shutout and limited the 49ers to just 168 net passing yards, but could not overcome SF s huge edge in time of possession (38:34 to 21:26) as the Chiefs dropped a decision. The 49ers ran 73 plays on the day and converted 61.1% on third down, while the Chiefs only got 46 offensive snaps in the game. KC s defense held the 49ers to a 42-yard K Jose Cortez FG on their first drive of the day to make the count 3-0. The Chiefs then appeared to forge ahead, but an 11-yard RB Priest Holmes TD was nullified by a holding call, forcing KC to settle for a 33- yard K Morten Andersen FG to tie the score at 3-3. RB Garrison Hearst capped SF s next lengthy scoring march with a five-yard run to give the 49ers a 10-3 edge. But KC quickly answered with a four-play, 50-yard TD drive set up by a 36-yard KOR by WR Dante Hall. This time there were no flags as Holmes darted in from 12 yards out for his Chiefs-record 14th rushing score of the year. That TD tied the score at and extended his club-record streak to seven consecutive games with at least one rushing score. SF again answered when RB Kevin Barlow raced in for a six-yard TD, making the count A short KC punt then gave the 49ers another golden scoring opportunity, but CB Eric Warfield picked off QB Jeff Garcia on the final play of the first half. Neither club could score in the third quarter as the Chiefs dodged another bullet when Cortez had a 46-yard FG attempt hit the left upright. Perhaps the game s most pivotal play occured in the third quarter when a 44-yard run by Holmes which went to the SF three-yard line was negated by a holding call, forcing the Chiefs to take a 43-yard FG. KC had one final shot, getting the ball back with 2:00 left in regulation. Three straight passes to WR Eddie Kennison got KC into SF territory. Kennison finished the game with a game-high eight catches for 134 yards. Forcing fourth-and-11 at the SF 37, the 49ers defense held, enabling San Francisco to hold onto a win. GAME NOTES RB Priest Holmes recorded his 14th rushing TD of the season, breaking the previous mark of 13 set by Abner Haynes in 62. With his 51 yards rushing at San Francisco Holmes reached 2,463 rushing yards in his KC career, moving him ahead of Greg Hill (2,436) for ninth in team history. WR Eddie Kennison had 134 receiving yards. Those 134 yards were the third-highest single-game total in his career and the most by a Chiefs WR since Derrick Alexander had 146 yards on seven catches vs. Buffalo (11/19/00). 49ERS Cortez, 42-yard field goal (15-56, 7:54). 11 THE LAST GAME Broncos 9, Chiefs 6 (OT) September 17, 2006 INVESCO Field at Mile High 76,786 KANSAS CITY DENVER Given every reason to fall to the Broncos in Denver including starting QB Trent Green missing his first start in 81 games the Chiefs refused to go quietly. Kansas City pitched a first-half shutout and led 6-0 in the third quarter before the Broncos eventually pulled even and squeaked out a 9-6 win with a 39-yard field goal in overtime. To no one s surprise, Kansas City opened the game with old-fashioned, ball-control football. To that end, the Chiefs first possession was a 12-play drive that featured 11 running plays and just one pass, chewing up 7:26. Using both RBs Larry Johnson and Michael Bennett as a one-two punch, the Chiefs drove to the Denver six-yard line. However, on third down from the six, a Johnson fumble returned the ball to the Broncos. Kansas City s defense was up to the hard-nosed task, allowing just one Denver first down in the first quarter. Broncos QB Jake Plummer had just 12 yards passing and Denver as a team managed just 24 total yards in the opening stanza. Still tied at 0-0, after Broncos K Jason Elam misfired on a 44-yard field goal attempt with just over 3:00 left before halftime. That gave QB Damon Huard and the offense time to drive 55 yards for a K Lawrence Tynes 29-yard field and a 3-0 halftime lead. Huard used three passes to Johnson and one to WR Dante Hall for first downs before Tynes knocked home the game s first points. The Chiefs first-half shutout marked the first time the Broncos were held scoreless in the first half of a game in the history of INVESCO Field. The battle of field position quickly tipped in the Chiefs favor in the second half as Johnson ripped off a 26-yard run to cross midfield, then P Dustin Colquitt dropped his second punt inside the five-yard line, this time at the Denver three. From there, S Greg Wesley intercepted a Plummer pass at the Denver 30- yard line setting up Tynes second field goal of the game for a 6-0 lead early in the third quarter. After getting the ball back on a punt the Chiefs coughed the ball up at the Broncos 37-yard line when Huard fumbled the football after catching his own pass that was deflected back to him. The Broncos cashed in on the turnover with a 22-yard field goal from K Jason Elam to cut the Chiefs lead to 6-3. Denver posted another Elam field goal as KC s defense stiffened inside their own five-yard line and allowed only the 22-yard game-tying field goal with 5:57 left. The two clubs exchanged three-and-outs on the next two series, setting the Chiefs up with the ball at their own 31-yard line and 3:08 left in the game. A pair of first down runs from Johnson advanced the ball as far as the Denver 47-yard line, but that was as deep as the Chiefs could get. On third-and- 13 from midfield with 0:26 remaining, Huard missed TE Tony Gonzalez, bringing up a punt and forcing overtime. The Broncos won the overtime coin toss and never let the Chiefs touch the ball again. A 14-yard completion to WR David Kircus, a 20-yard run from Tatum Bell and a 24-yard pass to Walker moved the ball to the Chiefs 21-yard line. From there, Elam booted the game-winning 39-yard field goal for a 9-6 overtime victory. GAME NOTES Kansas City s defense pitched a first half shutout, marking just the second time in franchise history that the club has pitched a first-half shutout at Denver. The Dallas Texans did it in a victory at Denver (10/8/61). CHIEFS Tynes, 29-yard field goal (9-55, 3:01). CHIEFS Tynes, 45-yard field goal (4-4, 1:26). BRONCOS Elam, 22-yard field goal (12-57, 5:34).
