THE MATCH-UP Kansas City and St. Louis will square off in the latest installment of the Governor s Cup series on Saturday at Arrowhead (8/26) when the Chiefs and Rams duel in the season s third preseason contest for both clubs. Saturday s outing will serve as a preview of a regular season meeting between the two clubs slated for November 5th at the Edward Jones Dome. This weekend s outing will give both clubs an opportunity to take a final look at their personnel before the NFL s first mandatory cutdown day on Tuesday, August 29th when teams must trim their rosters to 75 players. All NFL clubs must cut their rosters to 53 players on Saturday, September 2nd. Saturday s contest will mark the debut of Herm Edwards on the Arrowhead sideline as Kansas City s head coach. It also will serve as the initial meeting between Edwards and St. Louis head coach Scott Linehan as NFL head coaches. Linehan is in his first season as an NFL head coach, while Edwards joined the Chiefs after a five-year stint guiding the fortunes of the N.Y. Jets. Kansas City enters Saturday s game still seeking its initial victory in preseason play under Edwards. The Chiefs are coming off a 17-0 loss at the N.Y. Giants (8/17) after suffering a loss in their preseason debut at Houston (8/12). St. Louis is 1-1 in preseason action. The Rams registered a win in their preseason opener vs. Indianapolis (8/10) and suffered a home loss vs. Houston (8/19). While Kansas City and St. Louis have both changed head coaches since QB Trent Green was traded to the Chiefs from the Rams in 2001, Green has simply been a model of consistency over the past five seasons. During that five-year span, only Colts QB Peyton Manning (20,902) owns more passing yards than Green (20,117), who owns the eighth-best career rating (88.3) in Kansas City history. The Chiefs have won three of their last four preseason contests against St. Louis. KC s last win in this Governor s Cup series was a 24-7 victory on Monday Night Football at Arrowhead (8/23/04). The two squads will meet again in the regular season at St. Louis (11/5). The Chiefs have pummeled their in-state, I-70 rivals by a combined margin in the Rams last two regular season visits to Arrowhead, including that victory (12/8/02). The most prolific scoring game in the series was a Chiefs win under head coach Gunther Cunningham at Arrowhead (10/22/00), a contest which snapped a six-game Rams winning streak. Those 54 points were the fourth-highest tally in KC history and the second-highest total ever accumulated at Arrowhead. Those 88 total points were also the second-highest total ever scored in a Chiefs game. Kansas City also won at St. Louis by a count (10/26/97) under head coach Marty Schottenheimer.

Jets. Edwards guided the Jets to three postseason berths, the most of any coach in that franchise s history. Edwards originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL s Minority Coaching Fellowship in 89. He later served as a scout ( 90-91, 95) and also coached defensive backs for Kansas City ( 92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 24, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay s assistant head coach/dbs coach under Tony Dungy from before taking over as the head coaching reins of the Jets. Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in 76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia ( 77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in 86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State ( 87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in 90. EDWARDS VS. THE RAMS (0-2) Herm Edwards is 0-2 all-time vs. the Rams. Jets 29 OT Mike Martz ACCORDING TO COACH HERM... On his team philosophy: Just because they hired a defensive head coach everyone thinks I m going to change the offense. I m not trying to change the offense. There is a certain way you ve got to play. The defense has to go out there and stop them and the offense has to believe when we have that kind of lead we can run the ball and the game s over. We ve got to play the clock a little better and protect each other. You look at the playoff teams, their defenses are pretty good and help them win on the road. You have to have a defense that can go in there and slow down an offense on the road because then you can keep the game close and smart teams win close games. On the 2006 Chiefs: This team is a good football team. This is not a team that hasn t won. This team has won. We just haven t been in the playoffs enough and that s the hurdle we are facing now. That s something we have to strive to be more consistent that way. I think this team has a lot of gifted players. Look at the number of Pro Bowl players they had last year. Maybe not on defense, but hopefully that s going to change. I would assume that s going to change. I think sometimes we jump ahead too far. We worry about Super Bowls, but you can t win a Super Bowl unless you win your first game. You might luck into one every once in a while and have a great season, but most of the time you have to be a consistent playoff football team. That s what this team needs to become. We need to become a consistent playoff team. We have to get to the playoffs. Scott Linehan was named the 22nd head coach in Rams history on January 19, 2006, after one season serving as Miami s offensive coordinator. The Dolphins offense went from 29th in total offense to 14th under Linehan. He entered the NFL in 2002 as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings, holding that post from Prior to entering the NFL ranks, Linehan served in the college ranks for 13 years, beginning his coaching career at his alma mater of Idaho ( 92-93). Linehan served five seasons at Washington ( 94-98), including three as offensive coordinator. He also spent three seasons as offensive coordinator at Louisville ( 99-01). Linehan s teams played in seven bowl games, won five conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs four times. Born September 17, 1963 in Sunnyside, Washington, Linehan played quarterback for coach Dennis Erickson s Idaho Vandals ( 82-86). He led the Vandals to a Big Sky Conference championship ( 85) and three straight playoff appearances ( 84-86). Linehan signed as a rookie free agent with Dallas in 87, but his playing career was curtailed by a shoulder injury. WHAT TO WATCH IN 2006 DE Jared Allen has 20.0 career sacks and needs 4.5 more to move into the club s all-time top 10 in that category. TE Tony Gonzalez has 56 TD receptions and needs two more to pass WR Otis Taylor (57) for the most in Chiefs history. Gonzalez has 648 receptions and needs 15 more catches to surpass TE Ozzie Newsome (662) for the second-most by a TE in NFL history. QB Trent Green has made 99 career regular season starts and will open his 100th NFL game in his next start. Green is the only QB to have an active streak of four consecutive rating seasons and is only the third QB in NFL history to accomplish the feat. He can pass Green Bay QB Brett Favre (four) for the second-longest streak in NFL history. WR Dante Hall has six career kickoff return TDs and needs one more to surpass RBs Ollie Matson, Gale Sayers, Travis Williams and Mel Gray for the most in NFL history. RB Larry Johnson has 2,416 rushing yards and needs 1,283 more to move into the club s all-time top five. RB Marcus Allen (3,698) currently ranks fifth in that category. G Will Shields has started 207 consecutive games, the longest streak in team history and the third-longest streak in the NFL history since 70. Shields has played in 208 games and can pass K Nick Lowery (212) for first in team history in K Lawrence Tynes has made 44 field goals and needs six more to surpass Lin Elliott (49) for fourth in team history. S Greg Wesley has 26 interceptions and needs two more to move ahead of LB Willie Lanier (27) for eighth in team history. THE GOVERNOR S CUP The Chiefs own a 6-5 record in Governor s Cup competition with the Rams, including a 3-0 record in regular season play. Saturday s contest will mark Herm Edwards first foray into Governor s Cup play as Kansas City s head coach. The two teams will meet again in regular season play at the Edwards Jones Dome (11/5). Kansas City posted a mark in its Governor s Cup series against the St. Louis Cardinals from 68-87, going in the regular season record and in preseason play.

Gunther Cunningham is his second stint as KC s defensive coordinator after rejoining the club in Mike Solari enters his 10th season with the Chiefs and was promoted to offensive coordinator in the off-season. Kansas City continued to bolster its defensive unit in the offseason with several more notable additions. In addition to former Pro Bowlers already on the roster such as LB Kendrell Bell, CB Patrick Surtain and S Sammy Knight, the Chiefs added five-time Pro Bowl CB Ty Law as a free agent on July 23rd. The Chiefs secondary was further solidified with a pair of promising young players in S Bernard Pollard (D2-06) and S Jarrad Page (D7-06). After tabbing LB Derrick Johnson (D1-05) last season, the Chiefs also went defense with their top selection in this year s draft in DE Tamba Hali (D1-06). LB Kawika Mitchell (D2-03) serves as the club s defensive signal caller and appears poised for even bigger things after posting a team-high 135 tackles in DE Jared Allen (D4b-04) had a team-best 11.0 sacks and owns 20.0 sacks in his first two seasons. The core of Kansas City s record-setting offensive unit remains intact. Two-time Pro Bowl QB Trent Green headlines an experienced group that includes arguably the finest guard tandem in the league in 11-time Pro Bowler Will Shields and two-time Pro Bowler Brian Waters. C Casey Wiegmann is also one of the league s top players at his position. Running behind that offensive front is Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson, who established a franchise record with 1,750 rushing yards in 2005, including nine straight 100-yard games to close out the year. Johnson also racked up 20 rushing scores in 2005 and totaled an incredible 2,093 yards from scrimmage on the season to rank second in the league. Seven-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez continues to produce at a consistent rate and is the franchise s all-time leading receiver, while WR Eddie Kennison has registered back-to-back 1,000- yard campaigns. Kansas City s specialty units are headed by Mike Priefer. The Chiefs boast one of the league s top young kicking tandems in K Lawrence Tynes and P Dustin Colquitt (D3-05). TE Kendall Gammon earned a Pro Bowl berth for his long-snapping exploits in 2004, while WR Dante Hall has earned a pair of Pro Bowl berths as a return man. CHIEFS-RAMS CONNECTIONS Chiefs QB TRENT GREEN appeared in eight games (five starts) for the Rams ( 99-00), completing 145 of 240 passes for 2,063 yards with 16 TDs and fives INTs, good for a rating. He prepped at St. John Vianney HS in Kirkwood, MO Chiefs CB CHRIS JOHNSON saw action in 14 games (one start) for the Rams in 2005, recording 25 tackles (22 solo), three PDs, a FF and returning 38 kickoffs for 857 yards (22.6 avg.) with a TD Kansas City WR EDDIE KENNISON entered the NFL as a first-round draft choice (18th overall) of the Rams in 96. He appeared in 45 games (36 starts) in three seasons ( 96-98), catching 96 passes for 1,562 yards (16.3 avg.) with 10 TDs. Third-year RB Stephen Jackson takes over the reins full-time at running back while Paul Smith serves as the club s fullback. LT Orlando Pace (D1-97) was the first overall selection of the 97 NFL Draft and has earned seven straight Pro Bowl berths. Rookie Joe Klopfenstein works at tight end. The Rams defense features six-time Pro Bowl DT La Roi Glover and former first-round pick DT Jimmy Kennedy (D1-03). DEs Leonard Little (D3-98) and Anthony Hargrove (D3-04) round out the unit. 4 OFFENSIVE PLAYER NOTES QUARTERBACKS Kansas City returns two of its top three signal callers from 2005, including two-time Pro Bowler Trent Green who has started 80 consecutive games for the club dating back to Green ranks eighth in NFL history with an 88.3 career rating, a figure that is also the top mark in Chiefs annals. Damon Huard enters his third campaign with the Chiefs and served as the club s third QB the last two seasons. Brodie Croyle (D3-06) and Casey Printers are in their first NFL training camp with the Chiefs. Jeff Smoker was added to the roster on August 10th. QB TRENT GREEN Has started 80 games with KC, completing 1,599 of 2,579 passes (62.00%) for 20,117 yards with 111 TDs and 76 INTs for an 88.3 rating. Elected to his second Pro Bowl in 2005 to become the first QB in Chiefs history to earn two Pro Bowl berths. Connected on 317 of 507 passes for 4,014 yards with 17 TDs and 10 INTs for a 90.1 rating a year ago. His 20,117 yards passing with the Chiefs are the second-best mark in team history, trailing only Dawson (28,507). Ranks first in team history with an 88.3 passer rating, completion percentage, yard completions, a 7.80-yard average gain and 23 career 300-yard passing days. His 111 TDs with KC are the third-highest total in Chiefs history. Has started 80 straight games, the longest streak by a QB in team history. Has led the Chiefs to 44 wins, the second-most by a starting QB in team history behind Dawson (94). His 20,117 passing yards since joining KC in 2001 rank second in the NFL behind only IND QB Peyton Manning (20,902). Is the only QB to own an active streak of four consecutive seasons with a passer rating and is only the third player in league history to accomplish that feat. The club is 18-8 when he records a rating (min. 20 attempts). QB BRODIE CROYLE Joined the Chiefs at the club s third-round draft choice (85th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft. Completed 488 of 869 passes for 6,382 yards with 41 touchdowns and 22 interceptions for a rating in 38 games (26 starts) at Alabama. QB CASEY PRINTERS Spent three seasons ( ) with the CFL s British Columbia Lions. Played in 45 games (20 starts), completing 457 of 712 throws for 6,763 yards with 45 touchdowns and 16 interceptions for a rating. RUNNING BACKS Larry Johnson (D1-03) enters the season as the club s starting running back after compiling 1,750 rushing yards a year ago to earn his first Pro Bowl invitation. RB Michael Bennett was acquired in a trade from New Orleans on August 2nd. Bennett earned a Pro Bowl berth with Minnesota after gaining 1,296 yards in FB Ronnie Cruz is the leading candidate to start at the fullback position. RB Dee Brown was in camp with the Chiefs in 2005 and spent the final eight weeks on the roster. RB Quentin Griffin spent parts of three seasons with Denver. Other players in the backfield with previous NFL camp experience include: McKenzi Smith and J.R. Niklos and Derrick Ross are a pair of rookie free agents on the roster. RB LARRY JOHNSON Has played in 32 games (12 starts) in three seasons with KC. Has 476 carries for 2,416 yards (5.1 avg.) with 30 TDs and 56 receptions for 623 yards (11.1 avg.) with three TDs. Named to his first Pro Bowl, the first running back drafted by the Chiefs to earn that honor since RB Christian Okoye following the 91 season. Won the 2005 Derrick Thomas Award as the Chiefs MVP, becoming the fifth running back to win the award. Rushed 336 times for a franchise single-season record 1,750 yards (5.2 avg.) with 20 TDs in 2005 and added 33 catches for 343 yards with a TD. His 1,750 rushing yards ranked first in the AFC, while his 2,093 yards from scrimmage led the AFC and were second in the NFL. His 1,351 rushing yards and 1,627 yards from scrimmage were the highest marks in NFL history by any player in games played on or after November 1st. POSITION-BY-POSITION NOTES by Brad Kuhbander Has recorded nine consecutive 100-yard rushing games, the longest active streak in the NFL and his 10 overall 100-yard rushing days a year ago were the highest single-season total in Chiefs history. Scored a team-high 126 points to become just the third non-kicker in Chiefs history to eclipse the 100-point plateau in a season. Rushed for a team single-game record 211 yards at Houston (11/20/05) and 201 yards vs. Cincinnati (1/1/06) to become the first back in Chiefs history to record two 200-yard rushing days in a season. The Chiefs are 10-3 when he has a 100-yard rushing game and are 8-2 when he scores two or more rushing TDs. Was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for November and December/January, becoming the first player in the NFL to win back-to-back accolades since 98 when both N.Y. 7 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 49, Rams 10 December 8, 2002 Arrowhead Stadium 78,601 ST. LOUIS KANSAS CITY The Chiefs rolled up 49 points for the second week in a row as KC claimed the Governor s Cup with a convincing victory over the in-state rival St. Louis Rams. KC s defense and special teams accounted for 21 points. WR Dante Hall became the first player in team history and the 21st in NFL history to record two kick return scores in a single contest, getting TDs on both a PR and KOR. After St. Louis got off to a 3-0 lead, Hall took the ensuing kickoff back for an 88-yard TD. Then on the Rams next possession, KC s defense got into the scoring column as DE Duane Clemons recorded a 42-yard fumble return for a TD. On the play DE Eric Hicks recorded the first of the Chiefs 6.0 sacks when he stripped Rams QB Jamie Martin and helped put the Chiefs ahead An eight-yard TD catch by WR Isaac Bruce brought the Rams within 14-10, but it would be as close as they would get. Hall would return a punt 86 yards for a TD, while RB Priest Holmes would rush for two scores to make the count at halftime. Holmes finished with 132 rushing yards, his fourth-straight 100- yard game. Kansas City s defense took it from there, pitching a secondhalf shutout for the second straight week. GIANTS The Chiefs continued their preseason road swing with a trip to the Meadowlands as head coach Herm Edwards returned to his former stomping grounds. After falling behind 14-0 early in the second quarter, Kansas City was unable to mount a rally, falling by a final tally of After the Chiefs went three-and-out on the game s first possession, the Giants set the tempo of the game, always staying one step ahead of Kansas City. That scoring pass gave the Giants a 7-0 lead with 8:46 left in the first quarter. Kansas City s first-team offense advanced the ball into New York territory at the Giants 32-yard line on the ensuing possession, but back-to-back penalties stalled the drive near midfield. The clubs exchanged punts on the next two possessions before the Giants shook things up again. Taking over at their own 48-yard line, New York came out in a no-huddle offense. Manning went four-for-four on the drive and RB Brandon Jacobs did the rest, plowing into the end zone from one yard out on third-and-goal. That score capped an eight-play, 52- yard scoring march and gave the Giants a 14-0 lead. QB Damon Huard entered the lineup for the Chiefs third drive, marking his first game action of the preseason. After converting one first down, Chiefs P Dustin Colquitt was forced into action for his fourth punt of the evening. The second-year punter was one of the bright spots for Kansas City punting nine times averaging 49.9 yards per punt. Chiefs rookie S Bernard Pollard appeared to make the first big play of the night for the visitors when he forced a Jacobs fumble, then recovered it at the Giants 37-yard line.
