Herm Edwards returns for his second season at the helm of the Chiefs. In 2006, he became the first coach in franchise history to guide the squad to the postseason in his initial season with the club. Meanwhile, Gary Kubiak enters his second campaign in Houston after posting a 6-10 mark in his inaugural year as the Texans head coach. Faced with the daunting task of playing three of its first four games on the road, Kansas City will make its first appearance in Houston on Opening Day since registering a victory vs. the Oilers at the Astrodome (9/1/96). The Texans will be attempting to snap a string of three consecutive Opening Day losses. After ranking 11th in the league in scoring defense in 2006 (19.7 ppg), the Chiefs continued to bolster their defense in the off-season. The Chiefs added a pair of veteran LBs in Donnie Edwards (UFA-SD) and LB Napoleon Harris (UFA-MIN) to work alongside LB Derrick Johnson (D1-05). A new starting duo at safety in Bernard Pollard (D2-06) and Jarrad Page (D7-06) form a solid secondary unit with veteran CBs Ty Law and Patrick Surtain. A pair of promising newcomers on the defensive line in DE Turk McBride (D2-07) and DT Tank Tyler (D3-07) give the Chiefs a strong nucleus of young defensive talent to go with DE Tamba Hali (D1-06) and DT Alfonso Boone (UFA-CHI). Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez and two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson headline Kansas City s offensive unit. Both clubs will feature first-time Opening Day starters under center, with 11-year NFL veteran QB Damon Huard calling the signals for Kansas City, while QB Matt Schaub is expected to make his initial start in a Texans uniform. Up next for the Chiefs is a nationally-televised contest at Chicago (9/16) when Kansas City takes on the defending NFC champions. REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. 4 Kansas City is Typically a Strong September Squad, Chiefs Open Season at Houston by Pete Moris Opening Day Success Can Be a Postseason Precursor In the NFL s 41-year Super Bowl era, 82.9% of eventual NFL champions (34 of 41) won on Opening Day, including 13 of the last 17 Super Bowl Champions dating back to the 90 campaign. The Chiefs have made 15 playoff appearances and have won on Opening Day in 12 of those seasons. The only three times KC has made the playoffs after failing to win on Opening Day were in 71, 97 and In fact, the 2006 Chiefs became just the fifth team since 2000 to open the year with an 0-2 record and still qualify for the postseason. Chiefs Frequently Start Strong in September Dating back to 90, the Chiefs own a (.667) regular season record during the month of September, the league s third-best mark over that span. Houston owns a 4-12 (.250) all-time mark in September contests, including a 1-1 record against the Chiefs. The Texans have lost five straight September outings dating back to the 2005 campaign. Houston s last September victory was a upset at Arrowhead (9/26/04). Since the start of the 90 campaign, Kansas City owns an NFL-best (.581) road record during the month of September. Houston is just 2-6 (.250) all-time in September games at Reliant Stadium. 7 LAST TIME Chiefs 45, Texans 17 November 20, 2005 Reliant Stadium 70,481 KANSAS CITY HOUSTON Needing a win to keep pace with the rest of the AFC for the playoff hunt, the Chiefs put together an impressive effort in Houston. Kansas City exploded out to a 31-7 halftime lead with scores from both sides of the ball before closing out a win over Houston. RB Larry Johnson led the Chiefs offensive stampede with a huge night. Johnson established a Chiefs single-game rushing record with 211 yards on 36 carries. The third-year back eclipsed RB Barry Word s previous mark of 200 yards established vs. Detroit (10/14/90). Kansas City s defense also came up big, holding Houston to just 259 total yards and forcing three turnovers. The Chiefs opened up the scoring on their first possession of the game and didn t let up until they had posted a season-high 45 points. After K Lawrence Tynes got the scoring barrage started with a 35-yard field goal, Johnson began going to work on his recordsetting evening. Johnson scored on an impressive 23-yard TD run late in the first quarter for a 10-0 lead. Despite being dominated in total yardage (131-24) through the first quarter, the Texans managed to hang around thanks to a 99-yard kickoff return TD from rookie WR Jerome Mathis. In just a three-minute span the Chiefs jumped out to a 24-7 lead thanks to a pair of quick touchdowns by WR Eddie Kennison and Johnson. First, QB Trent Green capped a four-play, 71-yard drive by finding Kennison on a 26-yard TD pass. The 12th-year passer completed 19 of 29 passes for 220 yards with three TDs on the night. On the ensuing possession, Chiefs S Greg Wesley jarred the ball free from WR Andre Johnson, allowing CB Eric Warfield to scoop up the Texans fumble at the Houston 43-yard line. Four plays later, Johnson found the end zone for the second time with a one-yard dive, vaulting KC to a 24-7 lead late in the first half. Just as the Texans were trying to mount a late first-half scoring drive, Warfield intercepted a pass and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown and a 31-7 halftime advantage. Houston drew within by scoring 10 unanswered points in the third quarter. A CB Lewis Sanders INT set up a three-yard TD run from RB Domanick Davis. After a Kansas City punt, Houston strung together another drive, resulting in a 22-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. That would be the end of its rally. Kansas City stomped out the Texans comeback hopes by pounding out a 12-play drive that ate 7:04 off he clock and resulted in Kennison s second touchdown of the night, a seven-yard pass from Green. WR Samie Parker would add a six-yard TD catch to cap the runaway win.
