1 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (2-13) AT CINCINNATI BENGALS (3-11-1) REGULAR SEASON GAME #16 SUNDAY, DECEMBER 28, :00 PM (CENTRAL) PAUL BROWN STADIUM CINCINNATI, OHIO CBS Regional Coverage KCTV-5 (CBS in Kansas City) BROADCAST INFORMATION Chiefs FOX Football Radio Network KCFX-FM (101.1 FM in Kansas City) Play-by-play: Bill Macatee Color Commentator: Steve Beuerlein 2008 Stats and NFL Rankings THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs and Bengals will both conclude their 2008 regular season schedules as Kansas City visits Cincinnati on Sunday. The Chiefs will make just their second-ever appearance at Paul Brown Stadium, a locale where the Bengals have registered two of their three victories this season. This week s contest will mark just Kansas City s third trip to Cincinnati since 87. It s been 24 seasons since Kansas City last claimed a victory in the Queen City when the Chiefs registered a victory at Riverfront Stadium (9/9/84). Kansas City enters this week s contest seeking to secure its third victory of the season after suffering a loss vs. Miami (12/21). That setback marked the eighth time this season the Chiefs have lost a contest decided by seven points or less. Meanwhile, Cincinnati has constructed back-to-back wins after posting a 14-0 victory at Cleveland (12/21) and will be seeking its fi rst three-game winning streak since The Bengals haven t won three straight games to end a season since 97. A pair of familiar sideline adversaries will square off in this contest. Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards began his NFL coaching career as a recipient of the NFL s Minority Coaching Fellowship with Kansas City in 89, while Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis worked in a similar capacity with the Chiefs in 91. Both coaches received those opportunities courtesy of Chiefs President Carl Peterson, who will conclude his 20-year association with Kansas City s NFL franchise after this game. The Chiefs boast a pair of players on the AFC Pro Bowl roster. G Brian Waters earned his fourth invitation to Hawaii, while TE Tony Gonzalez will be making his 10th consecutive appearance in the NFL s All-Star Game. Gonzalez is the only tight end in league history with four 1,000-yard campaigns and needs just nine more receptions to register the second 100-catch season of his illustrious career. WR Dwayne Bowe is poised to become the eighth pass catcher in franchise history to post a 1,000-yard season, needing just 81 more yards to accomplish that feat after posting 995 yards as a rookie in If both Gonzalez and Bowe both top the 1,000-yard mark, it would mark just the third 1,000-yard receiving duo in a season in Chiefs history. Peterson joined the Chiefs on December 19, 1988 when he was named President, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer by Lamar Hunt. He was later promoted to CEO in 94. Peterson guided the club through one of the most successful eras in its history as the Chiefs amassed a (.553) regular season record. During that 20-year span, the Chiefs made nine playoff appearances, won the AFC West four times and reached the franchise s only AFC Championship Game in 93. Kansas City produced a winning record in 13 of those seasons and had a winning record at home in 16 of those campaigns. During the decade of the 90s, Kansas City posted a stellar (.638) record, making the Chiefs just the seventh franchise in NFL history to register a 100-win decade. During his tenure with the Chiefs, Peterson drafted the likes of nine-time Pro Bowl LB Derrick Thomas ( 89), 12-time Pro Bowl G Will Shields ( 93) and 10-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez ( 97). He made the trade that brought Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana to KC in 93 and made arguably two of the fi nest signings in unrestricted free agency - Hall of Fame RB Marcus Allen ( 93) and the franchise s all-time leading rusher, RB Priest Holmes (2001). Spearheaded by Peterson and his wife Lori, the Chiefs organization (players, coaches and front offi ce) has raised a net of over $20 million for Kansas Cityarea charities since 98. A longtime advocate of youth and international football initiatives, Peterson served on the NFL Youth Football Funding Board and was actively involved with NFL Europe (formerly the World League of American Football) as a member of the NFL Europe Working Executives. 4 Chiefs Seek to Close Out the Regular Season on a Winning Note by Pete Moris Kansas City is Seeking a Road Victory to Close Out the Season The Chiefs have been extremely competitive on the road during the second half of the 2008 campaign and are seeking to close out the regular season with a victory. Kansas City has been outscored by a combined total of just fi ve points (85-80) in its last four road contests. Despite posting a 1-3 record, the Chiefs have been within striking distance in all those games. Kansas City is seeking to secure a victory in a regular season fi nale for the third time in the past four years. The Chiefs dropped a OT decision at the N.Y. Jets (12/30/07) after posting a win vs. Jacksonville (12/31/06) and a 37-3 victory vs. Cincinnati (1/1/06). Herm Edwards is 4-3 in seven previous regular season fi nales as an NFL head coach. The Chiefs are seeking a road win in the season s fi nal contest for the fi rst time since posting a decision at Oakland (12/28/98). The Bengals are 2-3 in regular season fi nales under head coach Marvin Lewis. Cincinnati hasn t won a regular season fi nale at home since producing a win vs. Baltimore (12/21/97). Kansas City is Looking For It s First Win in Cincy Since 84 Sunday s contest will mark just Kansas City s third trip to Cincinnati since 87. The last Chiefs road victory against the Bengals was a decision at Riverfront Stadium (9/9/84). Current Chiefs defensive line coach Tim Krumrie was a starting defensive tackle for the Bengals in that contest. There are only four teams other than Cincinnati that the Chiefs have gone longer without beating on the road. Here s a look... LONGEST SPANS SINCE CHIEFS LAST ROAD WIN, BY OPPONENT Opponent Date Of Note 1. N.Y. Giants - - KC has never won a road game vs. NYG. 2. Cincinnati 9/9/84 Tim Krumrie s 2nd season with Bengals. Kansas City Would Love a 30-Point Performance at Cincinnati The Chiefs will try to jumpstart their offense against a Bengals squad that ranks 31st in the NFL, permitting 23.9 ppg. Although Cincinnati has permitted just 13 total points in its last two outings, the Bengals have allowed fi ve different opponents to register 30 points or more this season. The Bengals are 3-12 (.200) under Marvin Lewis when allowing 30 points or more, including fi ve straight losses in The Chiefs are 7-1 in their last eight road contests when scoring 30 points or more. KC is coming off a 31-point performance against a Miami defense that had not permitted a single TD and had given up only 24 points in its three previous games. The Chiefs have allowed 16.0 ppg in their two victories this season. Kansas City has permitted 20 points or less in each of its last six victories and has allowed 16.1 ppg in its last 15 victories dating back to The Bengals are (.213) under Marvin Lewis when being held under the 20-point plateau, including a (.136) mark this season. Cincinnati s last two wins when being held under the 20-point barrier have both come vs. Cleveland: 14-0 (12/21) and (12/23/07). Chiefs-Bengals Halftime and Second-Half Stats Getting an early lead would bode well in this week s battle against the Bengals. Cincinnati is (.079) when trailing at the half dating back to The Bengals have been winless in 15 consecutive games when trailing at the half. The Chiefs have led at the half in both of their victories this season, but have lost 11 consecutive games when trailing at half. The Bengals have led at half in their three wins and one tie. Cincinnati has scored 86 points (12.3 ppg) at home in 2008, the lowest total in the NFL. Cincinnati has scored a league-low 58 second-half points, including an NFL-low 20 in the third quarter and a league-low 38 in the fourth quarter. In total, the Bengals have been outscored by a 149 point differential in the second half (58 scored/207 allowed). The Chiefs have also endured their share of second-half struggles in 2008 and have been outscored by a 101- point margin in the second half (115 scored/216 allowed). Chiefs-Bengals Turnover Notes The Chiefs are tied for sixth in the NFL at +6 (29 takes/23 gives), while the Bengals are tied for 22nd at -3 (23 takes/26 gives). KC has been positive in eight games this season, including six of the club s last nine contests. The Chiefs have had a negative turnover differential in just three games. Cincinnati has been plus in just four games in 2008, but has been negative in eight games. The Bengals were +3 at Cleveland (12/21) after forcing four INTs, including three by CB Leon Hall. Kansas City has taken the ball away eight times in its last four games and is tied for fourth in the league with 29 takeaways. Cincinnati has posted a 4-14 (.222) home record with a negative turnover margin under Lewis. The club s last home win when negative was a win vs. JAX (11/2). QB Comparision - KC s Thigpen vs. Cincinnati s Fitzpatrick Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen and Bengals QB Ryan Fitzpatrick didn t start the season as their club s number one signal callers, but both will fi nish the year in those roles. Both players have displayed a propensity for making plays with their feet. Thigpen s 382 rushing yards lead all NFL signal callers in 2008 and are the highest single-season total in Chiefs history. Fitzpatrick has registered 275 rushing yards to rank third among NFL quarterbacks. Thipgen is seeking to secure his second victory as a starter after guiding the club to a win at Oakland (11/30). Since becoming KC s full-time starter at the N.Y. Jets (10/26), Thigpen has a postive TD-to-INT differential in all but two games and has at least one TD pass in eight of those nine contests. Despite playing in sub-zero wind chill conditions last week, Thigpen registered career highs with 320 passing yards and 57 rushing yards, throwing two TDs and rushing for another vs. Miami (12/21). He is on pace to fi nish the season with 18 TDs and 2,602 passing yards, the highest totals by a Chiefs signal caller since QB Trent Green had 27 TDs in 2004 and 4,014 yards in Fitzpatrick owns a record as a starter this season. 7 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 27, Bengals 20 October 14, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 76,846 CINCINNATI KANSAS CITY The Chiefs moved to 3-3 on the season thanks to a well-balanced win over Cincinnati at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City forced three turnovers and held the Bengals offense to just one-of-11 on third down, while the offense helped TE Tony Gonzalez reach the top of the NFL record books. En route to a 102-yard receiving day, Gonzalez became the NFL s all-time career TD leader among tight ends with 64 scores. For the initial time on the season, the Chiefs scored first with a 32-yard field goal. Kansas City s early lead was short-lived however as the Bengals took a 7-3 lead in just four plays as QB Carson Palmer threw a 42-yard TD pass to WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The momentum quickly swung back in the Chiefs direction when DE Jared Allen made his first of several big plays on the day. On third down from the Bengals 16-yard line, Allen and DE Tamba Hali combined to sack Palmer, forcing a punt and giving Kansas City great field position. RB Larry Johnson broke off a 20-yard run to get inside the Red Zone. Then, from the three-yard line, QB Damon Huard connected with Gonzalez for the tight end s 63rd career TD, placing him first in NFL history among tight ends. Gonzalez s record-setting score also put the Chiefs back in front Back on the defensive side of the ball Allen was at it again, this time sacking Palmer and forcing a fumble to give the Chiefs the ball at the Cincinnati 45-yard line. Johnson looked as though he would add to the Chiefs lead as he broke a 34-yard run, but had the ball ripped out at the one-yard line by CB Deltha O Neal. The fumble then bounced out the back of the end zone for a touchback. Johnson s fumble snapped a streak of 471 consecutive touches (rushes and receptions) without a fumble, a mark that stood as the longest active streak in the NFL until that play. Johnson would find the end zone moments later after a CB Patrick Surtain INT. Two completions from Huard set up Johnson for an eight-yard TD run, giving the Chiefs a 17-7 lead. Kansas City added on another K Dave Rayner field goal just before halftime to take a 20-7 lead into the locker room. After a scoreless third quarter, the two teams combined for 20 fourth-quarter points. Despite the scoring flurry, the Chiefs never allowed the Bengals to get closer than seven. Cincinnati booted a 33-yard field goal at the start of the period, but the Chiefs answered with another score by their Pro Bowl tight end. A 26-yard Huard-to-Gonzalez TD pass stretched the Kansas City lead to with 8:03 left in the game. The Bengals would try to make it interesting late as Palmer went to a no-huddle offense and found success. He completed four passes on the ensuing drive including a 30-yard scoring strike to Houshmanzadeh that cut the Chiefs lead to with just over 5:00 remaining. The last few minutes became a little intense as the Chiefs were unable to run out the clock on two late possessions. That gave the Bengals a chance to creep closer as a 36-yard field goal brought them within seven points with 0:18 remaining. However, an onside kick effort bounced right into the arms of Chiefs S Jarrad Page icing the victory for Kansas City. KC Rayner, 32-yard field goal (12-49, 5:21). 12 THE LAST GAME Dolphins 38, Chiefs 31 December 21, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 73,689 MIAMI KANSAS CITY On the second-coldest day in Arrowhead Stadium history, a pair of hot offenses combined for 895 yards, nine TDs and 69 points, but it was the Miami Dolphins who walked off the field with a victory. The temperature was 10 degrees with a wind chill factor of -12. Miami took the opening kickoff and RB Patrick Cobbs broke off a 60-yard return to the Kansas City 31-yard line. On the Dolphins first offensive play, WR Ted Ginn, Jr. took an end-around play and went untouched into the end zone, giving Miami a 7-0 lead with just 18 seconds off the clock. The Dolphins added three more points after CB Andre Goodman picked off a QB Tyler Thigpen pass intended for TE Tony Gonzalez and returned it 55 yards to the Chiefs 18-yard line. The Kansas City defense stiffened and eventually forced K Dan Carpenter to kick a 34-yard FG, giving the Dolphins a quick 10-0 lead. Given their second chance with the football, the Chiefs offense put points on the board. After RB Larry Johnson ripped off a 25-yard run to the Miami 33-yard line, Thigpen faked a handoff to Johnson, then ran a bootleg to his right and threw the ball up in the end zone where WR Devard Darling out jumped two Miami defenders for the ball to slice Miami s lead to As the second quarter began, the Chiefs finished off a long scoring drive. Thigpen took the offense for 80 yards on 17 plays with six first downs, finishing up with an eight-yard TD pass to Gonzalez on a fourth-and-one play to give the Chiefs a lead. Miami came right back and regained the lead on an 11-yard pass from QB Chad Pennington to TE David Martin to put Miami back on top at Again, the Chiefs replied, thanks to their longest pass play of the season. On first-and-10 at their own 23-yard line, Thigpen and RB Jamaal Charles connected on a bubble screen that went for 75 yards to the Dolphins twoyard line. Johnson s two-yard TD run on the next play put the Chiefs back on top Pennington then led his team on a 66-yard drive in seven plays that was capped with a 14-yard pass to TE Anthony Fasano, giving Miami a lead. The Chiefs would take a lead into halftime as Thigpen capped an eight-play, 95-yard drive with his legs on an eight-yard QB draw into the end zone for the score to give Kansas City a advantage. After not being forced to punt in the entire first half, the Chiefs opened the second half with another scoring drive. Thigpen drove the offense 69 yards on nine plays, picking up three first downs along the way, but the offense stalled in scoring territory and K Connor Barth hit a 27-yard FG to give the Chiefs a lead with 9:11 left in the third period. RB Ricky Williams answered on Miami s next drive and hit the end zone untouched for a four-yard TD run for a tie. It looked like the Chiefs were again on the way to returning the fire, driving the ball down to the Dolphins 26-yard line. But Thigpen threw his second INT of the day at the Miami six-yard line. Both defenses forced punts, before Pennington methodically drove his offense down the field as the Dolphins ate 8:33 off the clock. A 14-yard pass from Pennington to Fasano gave the Dolphins a lead with 4:08 left to play. The Chiefs had their opportunity to answer back, but on a fourth-and-one play at his own 26-yard line, Thigpen slipped and fell on a bootleg run, turning the ball over on downs. Kansas City got one final opportunity when Williams fumbled at the KC seven-yard line. But Thigpen threw his third INT of the game, allowing the Dolphins to run out the clock for a road victory. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez registered the fourth 1,000-yard receiving season of his career, becoming the only TE in NFL history to accomplish that feat MIA Ginn, 31-yard run (Carpenter kick) (1-31, 0:18).
