Kansas City is seeking to record its fi rst nine-win campaign since The Chargers had a four-game winning streak snapped with a loss vs. Oakland (12/5). 8 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 21, Chargers 14 September 13, 2010 Arrowhead Stadium 71,297 SAN DIEGO KANSAS CITY An electrified crowd of 71,297 celebrated the grand opening of the New Arrowhead as the Chiefs downed the Chargers on Monday Night Football. It came down to fourth-and-goal from the four-yard line as San Diego QB Philip Rivers took the snap out of the shotgun looking to tie the game. Rivers scrambled in the backfield looking for an open body, but pressure from the Chiefs defensive line forced an incomplete pass, turning the ball over on downs and sealing the Chiefs first win at the New Arrowhead. All three phases of football began clicking for the Chiefs as big plays were made on offense, defense and special teams. The Chargers were first on the board after Rivers led his team on a nine-play, 60-yard drive culminating with a TD pass to TE Antonio Gates from three yards out to take a 7-0 lead with 1:56 left in the first quarter. The Chiefs answered quickly when RB Jamaal Charles took a handoff to the left side of the line, found a gap and raced 56 yards into the end zone to tie the game at 7-7. After exchanging punts, Kansas City LB Derrick Johnson stripped the football from RB Ryan Mathews at the San Diego 28-yard line. CB Brandon Carr scooped up the loose ball and returned it 23 yards to San Diego s 12-yard line. The Chiefs offense took it from there. Three plays later on a play-action pass, QB Matt Cassel found rookie TE Tony Moeaki wide open in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown to give Kansas City its first lead of the game at 14-7 with 5:03 to play in the half. The Chiefs were just getting started. After another defensive stand, P Mike Scifres came on to punt for the Chargers. WR Dexter McCluster caught the ball at the KC six-yard line. On a play that looked broken, McCluster emerged from the pack and a key block from LB Andy Studebaker cleared him for a 94-yard sprint to the end zone, putting the Chiefs up 21-7 at intermission. The Chargers were first to touch the ball in the second half. The teams went punt-for-punt before Rivers and company found stride. First, Rivers found Gates who rumbled for 19 yards to the San Diego 30-yard line. Two plays later, Chargers WR Legedu Naanee was wide open and Rivers hit him for a 59-yard TD pass, cutting the Chiefs lead to with 2:33 on the clock in the third. San Diego regained possession after a Kansas City punt. Rivers pass to TE Randy McMichael was good for 20 yards followed by a 23-yard rush by RB Mike Tolbert putting the ball at the Chiefs 44-yard line. On fourth and nine from the KC 32 with just over seven minutes to play the Chargers elected to go for it. Rivers pass slipped through the hands of Naanee turning it over on downs. With 5:03 to play in the contest, Rivers connected with WR Buster Davis for 22 yards and then to WR Malcom Floyd for 22 yards putting the Chargers at the Chiefs 25-yard line at the 2:00 minute warning down by seven. On fourth and three from the KC 16, Rivers connected on a clutch pass to Naanee for 12 yards and a first down, setting the Chargers up with a first-and-goal from the Kansas City four-yard line. Kansas City s defense rose to the occasion. With 0:39 on the clock the Chargers faced a fourth and goal from the four-yard line. With Rivers in shotgun formation, the ball was snapped. Rivers stepped up in the pocket and threw it up but the pass fell incomplete, sealing the Chiefs victory. GAME NOTES The Chiefs registered a franchise single-game record with 160 punt return yards. 13 THE LAST GAME Chiefs 10, Broncos 6 December 5, 2010 Arrowhead Stadium 67,267 DENVER KANSAS CITY The Chiefs moved to 6-0 at the New Arrowhead, registering a 10-6 victory vs. Denver. The Chiefs defense limited Denver to 86 net passing yards and held the Broncos to three of 12 (25.0%) on third downs, permitting only 247 yards of total offense. The Chiefs held Denver to just six points, the fewest permitted against the Broncos since '71. KC posted 359 yards of total offense and dominated time of possession (37:14 to 22:46). Denver won the toss and elected to receive. Kansas City's defense set the tone with a key stop in its own territory when S Eric Berry broke up a deep third down pass ending Denver's scoring threat. KC regained possession following Denver s second punt of the afternoon. Kansas City moved into Broncos territory when QB Matt Cassel connected with WR Dexter McCluster for a 19-yard pickup to Denver s 34-yard line. Three plays later Cassel hit RB Thomas Jones, who scampered 20 yards to the Broncos fiveyard line. Cassel then fired a pass to the back of the end zone caught by TE Leonard Pope for a two-yard TD capping an 11-play, 70-yard drive giving Kansas City an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Five straight runs by RB Knowshon Moreno moved the Broncos to their own 42. On third and 12 from Denver s 40 Orton connected with WR Eric Decker for 28 yards to the Chiefs 32. A 17-yard run by Moreno put Denver at Kansas City s 15. The Chiefs defense solidified in the Red Zone, holding Denver to a 25-yard FG by K Matt Prater that cut the Chiefs lead to 7-3. The Chiefs offense took over at their own 27-yard line with 1:14 on the clock before half. In the twominute offense, Cassel connected TE Tony Moeaki twice on the drive for 11 and then 14 yards setting up K Ryan Succop's 47-yard FG with 0:07 before half that gave KC a 10-3 lead at intermission. The Chiefs put together a 14-play drive to begin the second half. On second and goal from the two-yard line Charles punched it in, however an illegal formation penalty nullified the TD. On fourth and goal from the two-yard line Cassel was sacked by LB Mario Haggan, turning the ball over on downs. Following another Denver punt Charles rushed 14 yards into Denver territory, but two plays later McCluster was hit by DT Justin Bannan and lost the football. The fumble was picked up by Denver s Haggan at the Broncos 32. Moreno then rumbled 22 yards to Kansas City s 27. Once again, the Chiefs defense held in the Red Zone, as KC forced a 41-yard field goal by Prater, cutting Kansas City s lead to 10-6 with 13:47 to play in the contest. After a Kansas City punt the Broncos took over at their own 34. On third and five from the KC 48 Moreno sprung free up the middle for a 24-yard gain. Two plays later Hali sacked Orton causing a fumble. Hali pounced on it giving the Chiefs offense the ball at their own 37-yard line. Kansas City however was unable to capitalize on the turnover and was forced to punt. With 2:32 remaining the Chiefs defense held strong, forcing Denver to punt. Charles slowly chipped away at Denver s defense and was able to pick up a first down. Kansas City was forced to punt with 0:20 on the game clock. P Dustin Colquitt boomed a 59 yarder that was downed at the eight-yard line. Orton s final desperation pass intended for WR Eddie Royal fell incomplete as the game clock expired, preserving the Chiefs 10-6 win. GAME NOTES The Chiefs allowed six points, the the lowest point total the club has ever permitted at Arrowhead against the Broncos. Denver's nine completions were the fewest permitted by the Chiefs since allowing seven vs. Oakland (9/20/09). KC Pope, 2-yard pass from Cassel (Succop kick) (11-70, 6:29). DEN Prater, 25-yard field goal (12-85, 5:20). KC Succop, 47-yard field goal (8-44, 1:16). DEN Prater, 41-yard field goal (8-44, 2:42).
