Pittsburgh is making its fi rst visit to Kansas City since the Chiefs registered a victory over the Steelers at Arrowhead (9/14/03). Kansas City is coming off a win at Oakland (11/15) and is seeking to register back-to-back victories for the fi rst time since accomplishing the feat in the fi nal two games of the 2006 campaign. Pittsburgh had a fi ve-game winning streak snapped after suffering a loss vs. Cincinnati (11/15). The Chiefs defense allowed just 90 net passing yards at Oakland (11/15) and forced 11 punts, a mark that tied as the second-highest single-game total in franchise annals. Kansas City also limited the Raiders to two of 16 on third down (12.5%) and ranks fourth in the NFL, forcing three and outs at a 29.5% clip. RB Jamaal Charles had a season-high 103 rushing yards vs. the Raiders. Kansas City has won two of its last three home meetings with the Steelers. However, Pittsburgh owns the distinction of being the only AFC club that has visited Arrowhead more than once to boast a winning record with a 9-4 (.692) all-time mark at Arrowhead. Sunday s contest will mark Todd Haley s first-ever encounter with the Steelers as an NFL head coach. A graduate of Upper St. Clair High School in Pittsburgh, Haley is the son of legendary Steelers personnel man Dick Haley, who played a pivotal role in the acquisition of 10 Pittsburgh players who are now enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The younger Haley grew up immersed in the Steelers Super Bowl teams of the 70s, serving in numerous capacities with the club during training camp and on gameday. Haley s most recent encounter with the Black and Gold came in Super Bowl XLIII when he served as the offensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona waged a furious fourth-quarter comeback, scoring 16 unanswered points to take a lead with 2:37 remaining in the contest. However, the Steelers would answer as QB Ben Roethlisberger connected with WR Santonio Holmes for a six-yard TD with 0:35 left to play to give Pittsburgh a lead and its sixth Super Bowl title. Up next for Kansas City is a division road contest at San Diego (11/29), while Pittsburgh travels to Baltimore (11/29). 7 THE LAST TIME Steelers 45, Chiefs 7 October 15, 2006 Heinz Field 64,727 KANSAS CITY PITTSBURGH Kansas City traveled to Pittsburgh for the first time since 89 and found a hostile crowd and a desperate opponent awaiting its arrival. After bouncing back from an early 14-0 deficit a week earlier at Arizona, the Chiefs were unable to repeat that feat for a second consecutive contest. The Steelers dominated from the game s outset, jumping out to a 31-0 halftime lead en route to a 45-7 victory. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger registered his first win of the season, connecting on 16 of 19 passes for 238 yards and two TDs, finishing the contest with a rating. Pittsburgh RB Willie Parker rushed for 109 yards and added a pair of scores. Pittsburgh started its scoring barrage on the game s initial possession. The Steelers were facing a third-and-11 when Roethlisberger hit WR Santonio Holmes on a quick pass. Kansas City CB Ty Law came up to make the tackle, but slipped and Holmes raced downfield for a 50-yard gain. Parker capped the drive with a three-yard run, giving Pittsburgh a 7-0 lead. The Steelers struck paydirt again on their third possession when Roethisberger found WR Nate Washington wide open in the Chiefs secondary for a 47-yard score. The touchdown gave Pittsburgh a 14-0 advantage late in the first quarter. Another Parker TD minutes later put Pittsburgh ahead Pittsburgh added another scoring drive before the half came to a close set up by RB Najeh Davenport s 44-yard run. The Steelers then went back to the air as WR Hines Ward caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger to widen the Steelers margin to A 32-yard field goal from K Jeff Reed mercifully ended the first half as Pittsburgh held a dominating 31-0 lead heading into the intermission. Kansas City s defense tried to get the club back into the contest in the second half. DE Tamba Hali forced a Parker fumble that was recovered by LB Kawika Mitchell. However, the Chiefs couldn t produce any points from the turnover, handing the ball back to the Steelers when S Troy Polamalu intercepted a QB Damon Huard pass. The Chiefs mounted their best drive of the day during the third quarter. Huard started to heat up, finding WRs Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker for big gains. RB Larry Johnson capped the drive with a determined two-yard scoring run when he carried a host of Pittsburgh defenders into the end zone. The score cut the Steelers lead to Kansas City s momentum would be short-lived. Hali would force his second Parker fumble on the day, but the ball bounced into the hands of G Chris Kemoeatu to keep the ball in Pittsburgh s possession. The Steelers would go on to produce a 13-play, 62- yard drive that resulted in a one-yard TD from Davenport on fourth-and-goal. Steelers LB Rian Wallace capped the scoring when he returned a QB Brodie Croyle interception for a 30-yard TD, making the final score GAME NOTES G Will Shields played in his 213th regular season game as a member of the Chiefs, bypassing K Nick Lowery (212) for the most games played in franchise history. 12 THE LAST GAME Chiefs 16, Raiders 10 November 15, 2009 Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum 40,720 KANSAS CITY OAKLAND The Chiefs made critical plays at crucial junctures to claim their seventh consecutive victory at Oakland. Kansas City produced a win at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum as S Mike Brown clinched the victory with an INT with 0:38 remaining, his second INT of the day. RB Jamaal Charles finished the contest with a season-high 103 yards, including a 44-yard TD run, while K Ryan Succop banged through three FGs. Raiders RB Michael Bush scampered for 60 yards down to the Kansas City four-yard line on the second play from scrimmage. Bush s run set up a one-yard RB Justin Fargas TD two plays later, giving the Raiders the 7-0 lead with 12:42 left in the first quarter. Following Oakland s opening-drive score, QB Matt Cassel looked for WR Chris Chambers deep down the right sideline on third and 12 on the Chiefs opening drive, but his pass was intercepted by CB Chris Johnson. It was punt-for-punt before Cassel sparked the offense with a 30-yard pass to Chambers. The drive stalled, setting up a 50-yard Succop FG to make the score 7-3 with 4:54 left in the first quarter. KC forced Oakland three and out, but the momentum shifted right back to the Raiders as Chiefs RB Dantrell Savage muffed the punt which was recovered by LB Jon Condo at the KC 37-yard line. Oakland settled for its own 50-yard FG by K Sebastian Janikowski, making the score 10-3 with 2:10 left in the first quarter. Faced with fourth and one at the Oakland 44-yard line, head coach Todd Haley left his offense on the field, and Charles reeled off a 44-yard TD run to tie the score at with 12:25 left in the first half. After another Raiders punt, Cassel went to work finding WR Dwayne Bowe for 41 yards down the left sideline to get in Oakland territory on the opening play of KC s ensuing drive. Cassel then hit Chambers for 24 yards to move the ball to the Oakland seven-yard line. The drive stalled bringing out Succop for a 25-yard FG that gave KC a lead with 6:48 left in the first half. On their first possession in the second half, the Chiefs penetrated as deep as the Raiders 37-yard line. Succop s 52-yard FG try sailed wide left, leaving the score with 10:43 to go in the third quarter. Oakland could not take advantage as Janikowski misfired his own 45-yard attempt wide left, his initial miss of the year. On Kansas City s ensuing possession, Cassel hit Bowe for 12 yards, but Bowe had the ball jarred lose as he was being tackled. Multiple players from both squads attempted to gain possession of the ball before Chiefs G Brian Waters jumped on it at the Oakland 32-yard line to regain possession. But Kansas City would give it away on downs after failing to convert a fourth-and-one pass from the Oakland 14-yard line. On Oakland s next possession, Brown registered the Chiefs first takeaway of the day as he intercepted QB Bruce Gradkowski s pass intended for WR Johnny Lee Higgins. Cassel then orchestrated an eight-play drive that ended in Succop s third field goal of the contest, this time from 31 yards out to extend the Kansas City lead to with 6:17 left to play in the game. After a three and out by the Raiders, Kansas City got the ball back with 4:38 remaining and was able to run the clock down to the two-minute warning before giving the Raiders one final opportunity. The Raiders took over at their own 20-yard line with 1:53 left to play. A 22-yard completion to WR Darrius Heyward-Bey that was upheld by a replay review moved the ball to the Kansas City 26-yard line with 0:38 remaining. Brown then hauled in his second interception at the 10-yard line, sealing a victory. GAME NOTES The Chiefs became the first team to ever win seven consecutive road games vs. the Raiders.
