Kansas City offi cially celebrated the grand opening of the New Arrowhead in grand fashion with a triumph on Monday Night Football vs. San Diego (9/13). The Chiefs currently sit alone atop the AFC West standings for the fi rst time since Week 7 of the 2007 campaign. KC is seeking to register back-to-back wins for the second time under Head Coach Todd Haley after accomplishing the feat with a win at Oakland (11/15/09) and a OT win vs. Pittsburgh (11/22/09). Kansas City made big plays in all three phases against the Chargers. The Chiefs rebounded from a 7-0 defi cit when RB Jamaal Charles broke free for a 56-yard TD run as KC fi nished the game with 135 rushing yards. QB Matt Cassel connected with rookie TE Tony Moeaki for a two-yard pass TD in the second quarter to give the Chiefs a 14-7 lead. On special teams, the Chiefs set a single-game franchise record with 160 punt return yards, including a 94-yard punt return TD from WR Dexter McCluster, the longest punt return in team annals. CB Javier Arenas also produced punt returns of 36 and 24 yards as the Chiefs amassed three more punt returns of 20+ yards than they had in all of McCluster (33.3) and Arenas (30.0) currently own the two best punt return averages in the NFL. Defensively, the Chiefs limited the Chargers to four of 15 (26.7%) on third down, a fi gure that currently ranks seventh in the NFL. LB Derrick Johnson forced a fumble that was recovered by CB Brandon Carr. But perhaps the game s pivotal moment came with a goal-line stand in the contest s waning moments. With the Chargers poised at the Chiefs four-yard line with 1:14 remaining, Kansas City s defense rebuffed the Chargers on four straight downs to preserve the win. Cleveland has lost fi ve straight home openers and is seeking to register a victory in its initial home game of the season since producing a 20-3 win vs. Baltimore (9/12/04). The Browns are coming off a loss at Tampa Bay (9/12) despite outgaining the Buccaneers by a 340-to-288 margin in total yardage. The Browns surged to a 14-3 lead before Tampa Bay scored 14 unanswered points. A 33-yard TD pass from QB Josh Freeman to WR Michael Spurlock with 6:56 remaining was the decisive score. Up next for Kansas City is a home contest vs. San Francisco (9/26), while Cleveland travels to Baltimore (9/26). That victory marked the ninth consecutive victory of the year for Kansas City as the Chiefs began the 2003 season with a franchise-best 9-0 record. Kansas City claimed its most recent win in Cleveland by a count as a defensive penalty on the fi nal play from scrimmage set up K Morten Andersen s game-winning 30-yard FG (9/8/02). The most memorable contest between the two clubs at venerable Cleveland Stadium came in 89 when Marty Schottenheimer made his return to Cleveland as Kansas City s head coach. With the score tied at 10-10, normally sure-footed K Nick Lowery missed a 39-yard FG at the end of regulation and a 47-yarder with 0:17 left in OT, leaving the game deadlocked in a stalemate. The Chiefs and Browns have tied twice, meaning the only club Kansas City has tied more frequently than Cleveland is New England (three times). KC s lone win at Cleveland s Municipal Stadium came by a 31-7 count (10/8/72) when the club was led by Hall of Fame QB Len Dawson, a native of Alliance, Ohio. 7 THE LAST TIME Browns 41, Chiefs 34 December 20, 2009 Arrowhead Stadium 53,315 CLEVELAND KANSAS CITY In a game filled with big plays and drastic momentum swings, Cleveland ultimately prevailed by a margin thanks to two kickoff return TDs by WR Josh Cribbs and a franchise-record 286 rushing yards by RB Jerome Harrison, who scored three TDs. QB Matt Cassel led the Chiefs on an eight-play, 58-yard TD drive to tie the game at with 2:20 left to play, connecting on a 12-yard TD pass to WR Mark Bradley on fourth and six. Cleveland answered as Harrison broke off a 28-yard TD run to give the Browns a lead with 0:44 left in the contest. Cassel finished the game with a season-high 331 passing yards and led the Chiefs to Cleveland s 26-yard line before his final pass attempt fell incomplete. After Cleveland opened the contest with a 12-play, 46-yard scoring drive that culminated with a 47-yard FG by K Phil Dawson, Kansas City was driving before RB Tim Castille lost a fumble. But the Chiefs defense returned the favor as CB Brandon Carr grabbed an errant QB Brady Quinn pass and returned it 31 yards to the Cleveland 49-yard line. Kansas City would be forced to settle for a 30-yard K Ryan Succop FG to tie the game at 3-3. Cribbs took the ensuing kickoff back for a 100-yard TD, pushing the Browns back into the lead, making the score 10-3 with 3:56 left in the first quarter. After a Chiefs punt, the Browns tacked on a 30-yard Dawson FG increasing Cleveland s lead to 13-3 with 12:32 left in the opening half. The Chiefs would answer with a nine-yard TD pass from Cassel to WR Chris Chambers, trimming the Browns lead to with 10:04 left in the first half. After a Cleveland punt, Cassel hit TE Brad Cottam for 24 yards. Three plays later, RB Jamaal Charles broke loose for a 47-yard TD run, giving the Chiefs the lead with 4:10 left in the first half. Charles would finish the day with 154 rushing yards. The Browns next possession stalled and an errant punt snap was recovered by LB Andy Studebaker in the end zone, giving the Chiefs a lead with 2:44 left before intermission. But Cleveland would regain the momentum almost immediatley as Cribbs returned the ensuing kickoff for a 103-yard TD, cutting the Chiefs advantage to After Kansas City was forced to punt on its opening possession of the second half, Harrison broke off a 71-yard TD run to give the Browns a advantage. CB Brandon Flowers registered an INT to halt another Browns scoring drive, but the Chiefs failed to capitalize. Early in the fourth quarter, Harrison extended the Browns lead with an eight-yard TD run making it with 12:09 left to play. The Chiefs added a 27-yard Succop FG, narrowing the Cleveland margin to with 8:08 left in the game. After Dawson s subsequent 52-yard FG attempt came up short, the Chiefs took the ball on their own 42-yard line with 4:26 remaining. Cassel then orchestrated a game-tying drive as his 12-yard TD to Bradley made the count Harrison put the final dagger into the Chiefs with his 28-yard TD run with 0:44 left to play. 12 THE LAST GAME Chiefs 21, Chargers 14 September 13, 2010 Arrowhead Stadium 71,297 SAN DIEGO KANSAS CITY An electrified crowd of 71,297 celebrated the grand opening of the New Arrowhead as the Chiefs downed the Chargers on Monday Night Football. It came down to fourth-and-goal from the four-yard line as San Diego QB Philip Rivers took the snap out of the shotgun looking to tie the game. Rivers scrambled in the backfield looking for an open body, but pressure from the Chiefs defensive line forced an incomplete pass, turning the ball over on downs and sealing the Chiefs first win at the New Arrowhead. All three phases of football began clicking for the Chiefs as big plays were made on offense, defense and special teams. The Chargers were first on the board after Rivers led his team on a nine-play, 60-yard drive culminating with a TD pass to TE Antonio Gates from three yards out to take a 7-0 lead with 1:56 left in the first quarter. The Chiefs answered quickly when RB Jamaal Charles took a handoff to the left side of the line, found a gap and raced 56 yards into the end zone to tie the game at 7-7. After exchanging punts, Kansas City LB Derrick Johnson stripped the football from RB Ryan Mathews at the San Diego 28-yard line. CB Brandon Carr scooped up the loose ball and returned it 23 yards to San Diego s 12-yard line. The Chiefs offense took it from there. Three plays later on a play-action pass, QB Matt Cassel found rookie TE Tony Moeaki wide open in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown to give Kansas City its first lead of the game at 14-7 with 5:03 to play in the half. The Chiefs were just getting started. After another defensive stand, P Mike Scifres came on to punt for the Chargers. WR Dexter McCluster caught the ball at the KC six-yard line. On a play that looked broken, McCluster emerged from the pack and a key block from LB Andy Studebaker cleared him for a 94-yard sprint to the end zone, putting the Chiefs up 21-7 at intermission. The Chargers were first to touch the ball in the second half. The teams went punt-for-punt before Rivers and company found stride. First, Rivers found Gates who rumbled for 19 yards to the San Diego 30-yard line. Two plays later, Chargers WR Legedu Naanee was wide open and Rivers hit him for a 59-yard TD pass, cutting the Chiefs lead to with 2:33 on the clock in the third. San Diego regained possession after a Kansas City punt. Rivers pass to TE Randy McMichael was good for 20 yards followed by a 23-yard rush by RB Mike Tolbert putting the ball at the Chiefs 44-yard line. On fourth and nine from the KC 32 with just over seven minutes to play the Chargers elected to go for it. Rivers pass slipped through the hands of Naanee turning it over on downs. With 5:03 to play in the contest, Rivers connected with WR Buster Davis for 22 yards and then to WR Malcom Floyd for 22 yards putting the Chargers at the Chiefs 25-yard line at the 2:00 minute warning down by seven. On fourth and three from the KC 16, Rivers connected on a clutch pass to Naanee for 12 yards and a first down, setting the Chargers up with a first-and-goal from the Kansas City four-yard line. Kansas City s defense rose to the occasion. With 0:39 on the clock the Chargers faced a fourth and goal from the four-yard line. With Rivers in shotgun formation, the ball was snapped. Rivers stepped up in the pocket and threw it up but the pass fell incomplete, sealing the Chiefs victory. GAME NOTES The Chiefs registered a franchise single-game record with 160 punt return yards.
