Edwards patrolled the Jets sidelines for fi ve seasons ( ) and led that club to the playoffs three times, the highest total of any coach in that franchise s history. The most recent meeting between these two original AFL foes resulted in a OT win for the Jets in the season fi nale for both clubs last year at Giants Stadium (12/30/07). The Chiefs are seeking to get back in the victory column after a loss vs. Tennessee (10/19). The Jets enter Sunday s contest after suffering a OT loss at Oakland (10/19). Raiders K Sebastian Janikowski drilled a 57-yard FG, the longest kick to ever decide an overtime contest in NFL history. KC lost to the Raiders earlier this year by a 23-8 count at Arrowhead (9/14). QB Brett Favre will make his initial appearance against the Chiefs as a member of the Jets. Favre posted a 1-3 record vs. Kansas City as a member of the Packers. Despite that 3-1 mark against Favre, just nine total points have been the difference in those four contests, with the Chiefs holding a slim scoring edge in those outings vs. the Favre-led Packers. Consistency at QB has been a major hurdle fo the Chiefs this season. KC has started the same quarterback in back-to-back games on just one occasion. Last week, QB Brodie Croyle returned to the lineup for the fi rst time since Opening Day (9/7), only to suffer a season-ending left knee injury. QB Damon Huard owns a (.556) record as an NFL starter, but left last week s contest with a right thumb injury. Huard guided the Chiefs to a win vs. Denver (9/28). Second-year QB Tyler Thigpen orchestrated both of KC s scoring drives last week, but lost his only career start at Atlanta (9/21). Last week, the Chiefs did not commit a turnover for the fi rst time this season. Kansas City was +3 in its only win of the season and is 9-2 under Herm Edwards when positive. Up next for Kansas City is a home contest vs. Tampa Bay (11/2) as the Buccaneers make their fi rst visit to Arrowhead since 86. The Jets travel to Buffalo (11/2) for a key AFC East showdown. Kansas City owns a mark in the regular season and has split a pair of playoff games with New York. These two franchises began play as original members of the AFL. The Chiefs were located in Dallas and known as the Texans, while New York s AFL franchise was fi rst known as the Titans. KANSAS CITY VS. N.Y. New York claimed a OT victory in the most recent meeting at Giants Stadium as K Mike Nugent drilled a 43-yard gamewinning FG in a driving rain (12/30/07). KC s last regular season win against the Jets came in 2005 on Opening Day at Arrowhead (9/11/07) as RBs Larry Johnson and Priest Holmes combined for 195 yards rushing and three TDs, while the KC defense forced three turnovers and registered 3.0 sacks. Kansas City s last win in the series at the Meadowlands was a victory as Holmes hauled in a 19-yard TD catch with 0:27 remaining (10/6/02). These two original AFL franchises both own a long and distinguished history. Kansas City began its march to a victory in Super Bowl IV by upending QB Joe Namath and the defending World Champion N.Y. Jets by a 13-6 margin in an AFL Divisional Playoff Game at Shea Stadium (12/20/69). The Chiefs would go on to defeat Oakland 17-7 in the fi nal AFL Championship Game (1/4/70) before getting a 23-7 victory vs. Minnesota (1/11/70) in Super Bowl IV. New York won the only other postseason tilt between the two teams, getting a victory in an AFC Wild Card match-up at Giants Stadium (12/28/86). Kansas City holds a 5-2 edge in preseason action vs. the Jets. The Chiefs won the last preseason game between the clubs by a count (8/10/91).

2 VS. CHIEFS HEAD COACH - HERM EDWARDS Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, The first coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fifth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a five-year stint ( ) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL s Minority Coaching Fellowship in 89. He later served as a scout ( 90-91, 95) and also coached defensive backs ( 92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay s assistant head coach/dbs coach under Tony Dungy from Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in 76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia ( 77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in 86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State ( 87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in 90. JETS HEAD COACH - ERIC MANGINI Eric Mangini was named the 14th head coach in N.Y. Jets history on January 17, He promptly guided the Jets to a 10-6 regular season record and an AFC Wild Card berth. Mangini previously served as the N.Y. Jets defensive assistant/quality control coach for three seasons ( 97-99). Prior to rejoining the Jets, he spent six seasons with the Patriots ( ), the first five as defensive backs coach and one as defensive coordinator. While in New England, Mangini helped guide the Patriots to the postseason four times, including three Super Bowl victories (XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX). The Hartford, CT native began his coaching career as the head coach of Australia s Kew Colts ( 92-93). He served his initial NFL coaching job as a coaches assistant in Cleveland under head coach Bill Belichick ( 95). Ravens head coach Ted Marchibroda retained Mangini as offensive assistant/quality control coach when the franchise relocated to Baltimore in 96. Born on January 19, 1971, Mangini played nose tackle and earned four varsity letters at Wesleyan University in Connecticut ( 89-90, 92-93). He set a school record with 36.5 career sacks. JETS 13, Kansas City 10 (OT) Eric Mangini HOME TEAM IN ALL CAPS YOUTH WILL BE SERVED Kansas City s roster has undergone a tremendous transformation. Incredibly, 60.4% of the players on Kansas City s 53-man roster (32 of 53) have three years of NFL experience or less, including 15 rookies (28.3%), the most rookies on any NFL Opening Day roster. The Chiefs started six of those rookies on Opening Day, the highest tally by the club since the AFL-NFL merger in 70. Based on research compiled by Mike Sando of ESPN.com, the Chiefs boasted the NFL s youngest Opening Day starting lineup in the NFL at years old. Based on Opening Day 53-man rosters provided by the NFL, the Chiefs and Packers owned the NFL s youngest rosters at years old. In terms of average experience, no team had a lower average experience than Kansas City at 3.45 years. Kansas City also boasted the distinction of fielding an NFL-high 17 rookies or first-year players on its Opening Day roster, a fi gure that included a league-high 15 rookies. QB STABILITY A RARITY FOR EDWARDS The Chiefs employed three different starting QBs in the fi rst three games of 2008, a fi rst in Chiefs history. The Chiefs are just the fourth team since the AFL- NFL merger to start three different QBs in the fi rst three games of the year in a non-strike season, joining the 76 L.A. Rams, the 88 Cleveland Browns and the 97 Jacksonville Jaguars. Herm Edwards has made four playoff appearances since 2001 (only Tony Dungy - 7 and Bill Belichick - 6 own more). Since QB Vinny Testaverde started all 16 games for Edwards and the playoff-bound N.Y. Jets in 2001, Edwards has never enjoyed another season where a single QB opened all 16 games. Twice in KC (2006, 2008), his starting QB has been injured on Opening Day. Here are Edwards starting QBs during tenure as an NFL head coach. He bypassed Shannon Sharpe (10,060) at Carolina (10/5) to take over the all-time yardage mark. Gonzalez s 68 total TDs with the Chiefs trail only RB Priest Holmes (83) in KC annals. Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 10,195 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (nine) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 23 career 100-yard receiving games, the most in Chiefs history. Those yard games are second in NFL history among TEs, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 121 contests vs. Tennessee (10/19). Only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history. 4 Kansas City Set to Face QB Brett Favre For a Fifth and Perhaps Final Time by Pete Moris Kansas City Has Typically Fared Well vs. QB Brett Favre QB Brett Favre owns a (.553) regular season record as an NFL starter, but the three-time NFL MVP is just 1-3 against the Chiefs. In Favre s four previous appearances against the Chiefs, KC has been able to pressure the future Hall of Famer, sacking him a combined 12.0 times, in addition to forcing seven INTs and four fumbles (three recovered by KC). In total, Favre has completed 96 of 153 (62.7%) passes for 1,159 yards with seven TDs and seven INTs in his four previous meetings with the Chiefs, numbers that translate into to a passer rating of Favre s lone victory against KC came in his most recent contest against the Chiefs. Despite trailing with 5:18 remaining in the game, Favre guided the Packers to a fourth-quarter comeback victory at Arrowhead (11/4/07). The go-ahead score for Green Bay came courtesy of a 60-yard TD from Favre to WR Greg Jennings. Despite KC s 3-1 record vs. Favre quarterbacked teams, the Chiefs compiled just a slim scoring edge in those games, good for an average score of 28.0 to Favre s teams have compiled a (.361) record when he is intercepted two or more times, including last week s loss at Oakland (10/19). However, Favre s clubs are 83-8 (.906) when he posts a rating game (min. 20 atts.), including a streak of 15 straight wins. The Jets have lost 11 consecutive games when they allow an opposing passer to post a rating of or higher. Chiefs QB Damon Huard is 7-0 as a starter with KC when he posts a rating of or better. In Kansas City s last win vs. the Jets at Giants Stadium, RB Priest Holmes had 152 yards in a victory (10/6/02). Dating back to last season the Jets have lost eight consecutive games when allowing a 100-yard rusher. However, New York is one of just eight clubs that haven t permitted 100-yard back this season. The last opposing rusher to top the century mark against the Jets was Titans RB LenDale White (103 yards) at Tennessee (12/23/07). The Jets are just 5-21 (.192) under head coach Eric Mangini when permitting an opponent to register 25 or more rushing attempts, including a 1-15 (.063) mark dating back to last season. Kansas City is averaging 24.3 rushing attempts per game in 2008, including 33 in a win vs. Denver (9/28). The Chiefs tied a season-low with 17 rushing attempts last week vs. Tennessee (10/19). Meanwhile, the Jets have won four of their last seven contests when RB Thomas Jones has 20 or more carries. Jones had 24 carries for 159 yards in last week s OT loss at Oakland (10/19). Kansas City Boasts One of the NFL s Youngest Defensive Units Kansas City boasts one of the league s youngest defensive units. The average age of the Chiefs 11 defensive starters is 23.7 years old and the average experience of the unit is just 2.6 seasons. Nine of those 11 starters are 24 years old or younger, while only LB Derrick Johnson has started at least 50 career contests. Six members of the Chiefs defense are in their fi rst seasons as NFL starters. The average KC defensive starter has played in an average of 29.1 NFL contests and started just 19.7 games. Kansas City s defense has forced 11 turnovers (8 fumble recoveries/3 INTs), a total that ties for seventh in the NFL. In fact, the Chiefs are tied with the Cardinals for the most opponent fumble recoveries in the league. The Chiefs are also tied for eighth in the NFL, relinquishing just two FGs on their first defensive possession of games in Carolina is the only team yet to give up any points on its first defensive drive in games this year. The Chiefs have also forced 19 negative rushing plays, a figure that ties for 10th in the NFL. The Bowe Show Continues to Roll Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe (D1-07) is on pace to enjoy one of the most productive starts to a career of any pass catcher in franchise history. In his fi rst 22 games in a Kansas City uniform, Bowe has hauled in 104 passes for 1,405 yards with seven TDs. Those 104 catches are the highest reception tally ever amassed by a Chiefs draft choice in his first two seasons with the club. Those numbers translate into an average of 4.7 catches and 63.9 yards per game. At his current pace in 2008, he will finish the year with 90 catches for 1,093 yards. If Bowe tops the 1,000-yard plateau in 2008, he would become just the eighth player in franchise annals to accomplish that feat. Bowe had 70 catches for 995 yards in 2007, the highest totals by a rookie in franchise history and the highest tally of any rookie in the NFL last season. Bowe needs just nine more receptions to post the most catches by a wide receiver in his first two seasons with the Chiefs. He is just 29 receptions shy of surpassing RB Priest Holmes two-year mark of 132 catches established in Meanwhile, his 1,405 receiving yards are already the fifth-highest tally by a player in his fi rst two seasons wearing a Kansas City uniform. 7 THE LAST TIME N.Y. Jets 13, Chiefs 10 (OT) December 30, 2007 Giants Stadium 76,737 KANSAS CITY N.Y. JETS From a cold and rainy Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, Kansas City s 2007 season concluded with a overtime defeat to the N.Y. Jets. Trailing 10-3 late in the fourth quarter, QB Brodie Croyle rallied the Chiefs to force overtime, but the Jets ground game was too strong in the extra period. Defense ruled a scoreless first quarter as neither club was able to move the ball with consistency. The Chiefs went three-and-out on their first three possessions, while the Jets were held scoreless on their first three possessions. The Jets pulled out a trick play to set up the game s first score. RB Leon Washington took a direct snap and then threw on the run to WR Wallace Wright for a 36-yard gain down to the Chiefs eight-yard line. Then after DE Jared Allen s second sack which gave him 15.5 on the season, KC s highest total since LB Derrick Thomas led the league with 20.0 sacks in 90 New York converted third-and-goal from the 15-yard line. RB Thomas Jones took a shovel pass from QB Kellen Clemens and weaved into the end zone for a TD. Kansas City crossed midfield on its next two possessions, with the second trip resulting in points. WR Eddie Drummond returned a punt to the NY Jets 39-yard line. A Croyle-to-Jeff Webb 11-yard pass set up K John Carney s 40-yard field goal cutting the Jets lead to 7-3 late in the second quarter. K Mike Nugent would answer with a 27-yard field goal just before halftime to move New York ahead 10-3 at the break. The Chiefs limited the Jets to just one first down in the third quarter, but could muster very little offensively. Kansas City crossed midfield twice, but punted on both occasions. Perhaps the only offensive highlight for the Chiefs during the third quarter was Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez becoming the all-time receptions leader among NFL tight ends, catching his 816th pass on a 17-yard completion from Croyle. Croyle and company finally came alive midway through the fourth quarter. With just 95 total passing yards up to that point, Croyle got in rhythm connecting on six of eight passes for 81 yards on the drive. After a 16-yard pass to WR Samie Parker brought KC to the Jets 35-yard line, Croyle lofted a 26-yard touchdown pass to Webb to tie the game at with 2:59 remaining in regulation. Both offenses would get one more crack at winning the game, but the defenses held and forced the Chiefs only overtime game of the season. The Jets, who had done next to nothing in the second half, promptly rattled off four first downs on the opening possession of overtime. A 13-yard pass to Cotchery and a 10-yard run from Jones moved New York down to the KC 34-yard line. Nine more yards from Jones set up Nugent for a would-be gamewinning field goal attempt from 33 yards out. Nugent s kick sailed through, but a holding penalty on the Jets delayed their celebration for a moment. Unfazed, Nugent nailed the 43-yard field goal try through the uprights giving the Jets the win. GAME NOTES Gonzalez set an NFL record for tight ends, owning 820 career receptions. He already established the tight end record for TD receptions (66). NYJ T. Jones, 15-yard pass from Clemens (Nugent kick) (6-56, 2:47). KC Carney, 40-yard field goal (5-17, 1:54). NYJ Nugent, 27-yard field goal (13-59, 4:55). 12 THE LAST GAME Titans 34, Chiefs 10 October 19, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 74,200 TENNESSEE KANSAS CITY Unable to generate a consistent offensive attack, the Chiefs were beaten by the Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City was unable to mount any consistent scoring threat under three different quarterbacks. QB Brodie Croyle started, but left early in the second quarter with a left knee injury. QB Damon Huard relieved into the fourth quarter after suffering a right thumb injury at the end of the first half. He was replaced by QB Tyler Thigpen, who finished out the game and led the team to a pair of scoring drives. It was a different story for Tennessee, as the Titans produced 455 offensive yards and 332 rushing yards. There were three touchdown runs by RB LenDale White, including an 80-yard scoring run, and a 66 yard TD jaunt by rookie RB Chris Johnson. The Titans struck first, taking possession at the Chiefs 20-yard line after a Kansas City punt. QB Kerry Collins drove Tennessee s offense 49 yards on 10 plays, but had to settle for a 49-yard FG from K Rob Bironas to give the Titans an early 3-0 lead. Tennessee later added to its lead on a six-play, 53-yard drive with White scoring on a six-yard run to make it 10-0 for the Titans. As the second quarter began, the Chiefs offense finally started moving the football and pushed it to the Titans 21-yard line on a 17-yard completion from Croyle to WR Dwayne Bowe on third down. Unfortunately on the play, Croyle suffered a season-ending left knee injury. K Nick Novak tried a 39-yard field goal that sailed over the left upright but was ruled no good by the game officials. Tennessee went three-and-out on its next possession. Huard came in to run the offense and immediately the Chiefs got a nice 19-yard run by RB Kolby Smith on first down. They later converted a fourth-and-one play thanks to a Titans offsides penalty. Eventually, the Chiefs had to punt the ball away and the touchback gave Tennessee possession at its own 20-yard line. From there Collins led the offense on a nine-play, 80- yard scoring drive, with all but 17 of those yards coming on the ground from Johnson and White. White punched in his second TD run of the day, this one from the Kansas City two-yard line to make the Titans advantage The Chiefs offense put together a drive near the end of the half, but Novak s 50-yard FG attempt hit the right upright just before intermission. The third quarter proved to be a battle for the punters, as neither offense was able to get anything going offensively. Tennessee finally was able to pull together a third-quarter drive, after it took over at its own 41-yard line following a 57-yard punt by P Dustin Colquitt that came out of his own end zone. The Titans went 31 yards on eight plays, finishing up with a 46-yard FG by Bironas just before the end of the quarter. In the fourth quarter, White added his third scoring play, when he cracked through the right side of the Titans offensive line and huffed and puffed his way 80 yards into the end zone. The Chiefs then finally got on the scoreboard with a 26-yard Novak FG, set up by a 59-yard kickoff return by RB Dantrell Savage. On the next possession, Johnson broke loose through the left side of the Titans offensive line and ran 66 yards for a TD to make the count Thigpen got the Chiefs first TD in the last eight quarters, when he ran in on a 14-yard scramble with 2:37 to play in the game.
