7 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 56, Falcons 10 October 24, 2004 Arrowhead Stadium 78,260 ATLANTA KANSAS CITY The Chiefs unleashed a 56-point outburst the second-highest total in franchise history and their highest tally ever at Arrowhead as KC demolished the Falcons by a margin. The Chiefs set an NFL record with eight rushing TDs, including four from RB Priest Holmes in the first half, while the KC defense held Atlanta to just three offensive points. KC had 540 total yards and set team records with 36 total first downs and 21 rushing first downs. The game s key sequence came in the first quarter when a 32-yard scramble by Vick which accounted for over 26 percent of the Falcons rushing yards on the day set Atlanta up with first-and-goal at the nine on the opening drive of the game. Vick was knocked out of bounds at the one-yard line on first down and threw an incompletion on second down. Then, LB Shawn Barber knocked down Vick s pass attempt on third-and-goal from the one, forcing Atlanta to settle for a 19-yard FG. On the day, KC would hold the Falcons to just one of 11 (9.1%) on third down. On KC s first offensive snap, Holmes fumbled at the Chiefs 32-yard line. However, the KC defense held its ground on fourth down, setting the stage for one of the most impressive offensive displays in franchise history. In the first half alone, Holmes accounted for 103 rushing yards and four TDs, making him just the sixth player in NFL history to register four ground scores in a single half. RB Derrick Blaylock added a seven-yard TD run and Holmes dove into the end zone for his fourth TD of the day with just 0:02 left in the second quarter as KC took a commanding 35-3 halftime lead. After the Chiefs punted on their opening drive of the second half, the Falcons scored their lone TD of the day on a 75-yard punt return TD from CB Allen Rossum to make the count Holmes who finished the game with 139 ground yards got the Chiefs to the Atlanta one-yard line before leaving the game. Blaylock took it from there, registering his second rushing TD of the day as KC went ahead Blaylock finished the game with 90 rushing yards and tacked on a pair of fourth-quarter scoring runs to tie a franchise single-game record with four ground scores himself, making the final count in favor of the Chiefs. On the day, KC ran the ball 49 times for 271 yards against an Atlanta defense that entered the game ranked first in the NFL against the run. Defensively, KC registered its third straight game with 4.0 sacks and held the Falcons to just 222 yards of total offense. 12 THE LAST GAME Raiders 23, Chiefs 8 September 14, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 74,480 OAKLAND KANSAS CITY Too little offense, too late sunk the Chiefs in their rivalry battle with the Oakland Raiders, as they suffered a 23-8 loss at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs offense struggled through the game s first three quarters and was unable to consistently stay on the field as the Oakland defense shut down the running game, allowing only 55 yards. Defensively, the Chiefs struggled to control the Raiders running game, giving up 300 yards on the ground. The Chiefs offense had the ball first and put together 10 snaps in their opening possession, including a pair of first downs. On several plays in the possession, QB Damon Huard left the field and WR Marques Hagans took the direct snap at the quarterback position for a pair of running plays. Ultimately, the drive stalled and a P Dustin Colquitt punt set up the Raiders at their own 41-yard line. In five plays Oakland had moved into Chiefs territory, but settled for a 56-yard FG by K Sebastian Janikowski for an early 3-0 lead. It was the longest field goal by an opponent against the Chiefs in franchise history. When the Chiefs got the ball back, a Huard pass was tipped and picked off by Oakland S Tyvon Branch who returned the interception 36 yards to the Chiefs nineyard line, setting up a 25-yard Janikowski FG to push the Oakland lead to 6-0. The second quarter was controlled by the defenses. Combined, the Chiefs and Raiders produced 85 yards in total offense on 26 plays over the first 15 minutes of play. The Chiefs made a change at quarterback on their last possession of the first quarter as QB Tyler Thigpen replaced Huard, who suffered a mild head trauma. The Raiders retained a 6-0 halftime advantage. The game s first touchdown came on Oakland s second possession of the third quarter. Starting at its five-yard line, Oakland rode the strong legs of the rookie RB Darren McFadden. He produced runs for 21 and 50 yards runs before a 19-yard TD run. The scoring drive went seven plays for 95 yards and gave Oakland a 13-0 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the period. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Raiders added another Janikowski FG, this one from 40 yards and a 16-0 lead. That s when the Chiefs put together their only scoring drive of the game. Starting at his own 20-yard line, Thigpen moved the team down the field, starting with a 30-yard completion to WR Dwayne Bowe on first down. The Chiefs then got a big third down conversion on a 10-yard completion from Thigpen to WR Devard Darling. The touchdown came on a third-and-goal play at the Raiders two-yard line as Thigpen found TE Tony Gonzalez in the end zone. On the two-point play, Thigpen ran a bootleg right and threw to FB Mike Cox to make the score 16-8 in favor of the Raiders, keeping hope alive for Kansas City. The Chiefs defense came back and forced a turnover, as Bush fumbled on a hit by S Jarrad Page and S Bernard Pollard recovered his second loose ball of the day. Thigpen moved the offense into Raiders territory, but threw an interception to LB Kirk Morrison that ended the Chiefs hopes of a comeback. The Raiders added a late touchdown as Bush scored on a 32-yard run that ended a six-play, 58-yard drive. Janikowski s PAT kick gave Oakland its final 23-8 margin. OAK Janikowski, 56-yard field goal (6-22, 3:50). OAK Janikowski, 25-yard field goal (4-2, 0:54). OAK McFadden, 19-yard run (Janikowski kick) (7-95, 3:52).
