The Chiefs enter Sunday s game after a narrow loss at Jacksonville (11/8). Kansas City waged a furious fourth-quarter comeback, scoring 15 points in the fi nal 2:31 at Jacksonville. QB Matt Cassel connected with newly-acquired WR Chris Chambers for a pair of TDs. The Chiefs have scored 67 points in the fi nal quarter of games this season, but own a combined 59 points in the fi rst three quarters. The Raiders enjoyed a bye last week after suffering a setback in their most recent contest at San Diego (11/1). KC owns a 126-to-86 margin over that six-game span, an average margin of victory of just 6.7 points per game. Regardless of site, Kansas City has won 10 of the last 13 contests in this AFC West feud. While KC has been dominant in the Chiefs-Raiders series of late, 11 outings during that 13-game stretch have been decided by seven points or less. The most recent meeting was no exception as Oakland eked out a victory at Arrowhead (9/20). Just 31 total points ( ) separate the two teams over that 13-game span, meaning the average margin in those games has been just 2.9 ppg. His Dallas Texans franchise anchored the fledgling league. In 62, the franchise won the first of three AFL titles under head coach Hank Stram, thanks to NFL castoff QB Len Dawson and a host of other talented performers. To honor their lineage, the Chiefs will wear replicas of their 62 uniforms for three games in The club s helmet will feature a gray facemask, as well as the outline of the state of Texas with a gold star on Dallas. While the club s pants have remained virtually unchanged over the years, the striping of the socks has been altered to match the 62 look. In addition, the gold trim around the numerals and lettering on these classic uniforms is more narrow than it appears on current Chiefs jerseys. THE AFL S 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON The American Football League was officially born on August 14, 1959 when less than two weeks after his 27th birthday, Lamar Hunt called to order a meeting in Chicago. On April 8, 1966, Hunt and Cowboys executive Tex Schramm met in Dallas beginning merger negotiations that culminated on June 8, The Chiefs wore classic Dallas Texans uniforms from their 62 AFL Championship season vs. Dallas (10/11) and vs. San Diego (10/25) and will wear the road version of that uniform at Oakland (11/15). P DUSTIN COLQUITT IS NETTING RESULTS The argument can be made that the top three punters in the NFL all currently reside in the AFC West. Since the AFL-NFL merger in 70, San Diego P Mike Scifres (38.98) owns the NFL s best career net punting average. Kansas City P Dustin Colquitt is a close second in that department at 38.70, while Oakland P Shane Lechler is fi fth at Colquitt owns the KC career record with 127 punts inside the 20-yard line, including 23 this season. Only Cleveland P Dave Zastudil (25) has more. Colquitt currently ranks second in the AFC with a yard net punting average. Colquitt is on pace to fi nish the year with 46 punts inside the 20 which would shatter P Louie Aguiar s Kansas City single-season record of 29 set in 95. The Chiefs currently rank fourth in the NFL, allowing just 5.9 yards per opponent punt return. NFL, BEST CAREER NET AFC, BEST NET PUNTING NFL, MOST PUNTS PUNT AVG. 4 Chiefs Seek to Extend Their Winning Streak at Oakland to Seven Games by Pete Moris KC is Seeking to Register Its Seventh Straight Win at Oakland Kansas City owns a 10-4 (.692) regular season record at Oakland since 95, including a string of six straight wins. The Chiefs are seeking to become the fi rst team to ever register seven consecutive road wins against the Raiders. Kansas City and San Diego both have active six-game winning streaks in Oakland. The Chargers extended their road victory streak against the Raiders earlier this year with a win (9/14). KC s last loss at Oakland was a 24-0 setback in a waterlogged 2002 regular season fi nale (12/28/02). LONGEST ROAD WINNING STREAKS VS. Five of those six games have been decided by seven points or less and have featured thrilling fi nishes. The Chiefs have outscored the Raiders by a 126-to-86 margin over that six-game span, an average margin of victory of just 6.7 points per game. KC Seeks to Hold Oakland to 17 Points or Less Once Again Dating back to 90, the Chiefs are 17-1 (.944) against the Raiders in regular and postseason play when holding the Silver and Black to 17 points or less. During Kansas City s six-game winning streak in Oakland, the Chiefs have held the Raiders to 17 points or less in fi ve of those six contests. KC has allowed just 14.3 ppg during its six-game winning streak at Oakland. Dating back to 2006, the Chiefs have allowed 17 points or less in their last six road victories, outscoring their foes by an average margin of 21.2 to 11.8 in those wins. Dating back to 2003, Oakland is 5-56 (.082) when being held to 17 points or less, including a 3-26 (.103) mark at home. The Raiders have scored 17 points or less in seven consecutive games in 2009 with the only exception coming in a loss vs. San Diego (9/14). Oakland has lost 37 consecutive games when scoring fewer than 13 points, including an 0-4 mark in The Raiders last win in such a circumstance was a 9-6 victory vs. San Diego (9/3/00). Only St. Louis (77 points, 9.6 ppg) has scored fewer points than Oakland (78 points, 9.8 ppg) this season. A Fast Start Would Bode Well For Kansas City in This Contest The Chiefs and Raiders would both like to get off to quicker starts. Kansas City has been outscored by a 43-point margin (52-9) in the fi rst quarter, while Oakland owns a 37-point fi rst-quarter scoring defi cit (54-17). Only Tennessee (-86) has been outscored by a bigger margin in the fi rst half than Oakland this season. Oakland has scored just 49 fi rst-half points, while allowing 128 points, numbers that translate into a 79-point fi rst-half scoring defi cit. Oakland has lost 18 consecutive games when trailing at halftime, including an 0-5 mark in KC and Oakland were tied 3-3 at intermission of the fi rst meeting between these two squads at Arrowhead (9/20). The Raiders have also lost 17 straight games when trailing after three quarters. Oakland has led after three quarters in both of its victories this season. KC has led at the half in four straight visits to Oakland and hasn t trailed after two quarters at that venue since the Raiders held a halftime edge in a KC win (12/5/04). The Turnover Table Has Been a Key Stat in KC s Wins at Oakland Kansas City is +8 (14 takes/6 gives) during its six-game winning streak in Oakland and has a 23-point advantage in points off turnovers in those games. The Chiefs have committed just one turnover in each of those six games. KC was -2 (0 takes/2 gives) in a loss vs. Oakland (9/20). The Chiefs are tied for the NFL lead with only two lost fumbles. KC is also tied for third in the NFL, allowing just 13 points off turnovers. KC has been even or positive in fi ve of its last six contests and were +1 (1 take/0 gives) at Jacksonville (11/8). Only Cleveland at -11 (12 takes/23 gives) owns a worse turnover differential than Oakland at -9 (10 takes/19 gives) and Carolina at -9 (15 takes/24 gives). Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell has been responsible for 14 of those 19 turnovers. In addition to nine INTs, he has lost fi ve fumbles, a fi gure that ties Houston RB Steve Slaton for the most lost fumbles in the league. Oakland is 4-45 (.081) with a negative turnover ratio dating back to 2004, including a 3-21 (.125) mark at home. Overall, the Raiders have lost 37 of their last 39 games with a negative turnover margin. The Silver and Black haven t registered a positive turnover differential in seven straight home games, most recently accomplishing the feat by going +1 vs. Carolina (11/9/08). CHIEFS-RAIDERS TAKEAWAY STATS, LAST SIX OAK KC Differential KC Takes KC Gives Points Off Takes +8 (14 takes/6 gives) 9 FRs/5 INTs 1 FR/5 INTs +23 (37/14) Chiefs Seek to Finish Strong in the Season s Second Half As the Chiefs embark on the fi nal eight games of the 2009 campaign, KC will attempt to post a winning mark in the second half of the season for the fi rst time since going 5-3 under Dick Vermeil in Oakland hasn t been above.500 in the season s final eight games since going 7-1 in The 12 teams that qualifi ed for the NFL playoffs in 2008 fi nished a combined (.714) in the season s second half. In fact, all 12 of those squads fi nished.500 or better down the stretch, including seven squads that went 6-2 or better. Finishing strong in the season s second half is also important for teams that may not be in postseason contention. Last year, San Francisco was just 2-6 at the midseason mark a year ago, but went 5-3 in its fi nal eight games to fi nish the year at 7-9. No team that finished below.500 during the season s fi nal eight games in 2008 qualifi ed for the playoffs. Quarterback Comparision: Matt Cassel vs. JaMarcus Russell Chiefs QB Matt Cassel owns a 4-1 record as a starter when he posts a rating of or better. He completed 18 of 30 passes for 218 yards with a career-high four TDs and one INT in his only previous career start at Oakland (12/14/08). New England claimed a win as Cassel posted a rating. 7 THE LAST TIME Raiders 13, Chiefs 10 September 20, 2009 Arrowhead Stadium 69,169 OAKLAND KANSAS CITY In typical Chiefs-Raiders fashion, a tight game came right down to the wire as both clubs scored TDs in the final three minutes. Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell orchestrated a nine-play, 69-yard drive that was capped by a five-yard TD run by RB Darren McFadden with 1:07 left to play as Oakland registered a victory at Arrowhead. The Chiefs dominated the contest statistically outgaining the Raiders in total yards by a 409-to-166-yard margin. Kansas City held the ball for 38:39 compared to a 21:21 time of possession for the Raiders. The Chiefs also had over a two-to-one edge in first downs (25 to 11) and rushing yards (173 to 67). The contest started on a positive note for the Chiefs as QB Matt Cassel made his first regular start after a knee injury kept him out of the season opener. On his first possession, Cassel found newly-acquired WR Bobby Wade for 16 yards, keeping Kansas City s drive alive. Facing fourth and two from the Oakland 40-yard line, head coach Todd Haley elected to go for it, and a three-yard rush by RB Jackie Battle kept the chains moving. Kansas City penetrated to the Raiders 13-yard line, but couldn t convert on third and nine, setting up a 23-yard K Ryan Succop FG that capped a 17-play, 74-yard drive that ate 9:25 off the clock and gave the Chiefs a 3-0 advantage. Kansas City s defense forced a third consecutive three and out before the Raiders mounted their first serious scoring threat of the game. QB JaMarcus Russell connected on an 18-yard pass to rookie WR Darrius Heyward-Bey and found RB Michael Bush for a 17-yard gain to propel the Raiders. However, Oakland was forced to settle for a 48-yard FG by K Sebastian Janikowski to tie the score at 3-3 with 4:45 left in the second quarter. With time winding down in the first half, the Chiefs once again appeared poised to add to the scoreboard. Cassel guided the club to the Oakland nine-yard line, setting the team up with first and goal. But the Chiefs were out of timeouts and RB Dantrell Savage was tackled in bounds on the half s final play, thwarting a golden scoring opportunity. The Chiefs received the ball to open the second half and Cassel had the Chiefs on the move again. But that momentum was short-lived as a Cassel pass was picked off by Raiders S Michael Huff. The Raiders gained one first down before their drive stalled, setting up a 54-yard FG by Janikowski to give Oakland a 6-3 lead with 8:33 remaining in the third quarter. Two possessions later, Huff would once again victimize Cassel, this time intercepting him at the six-yard line. Oakland would again be forced to give it back to KC. A steady Chiefs drive brought them to the Oakland 29-yard line, then Cassel went deep down the left sideline where WR Dwayne Bowe hauled in a 29-yard TD. Cassel s first TD pass in a Chiefs uniform highlighted a nine-play, 72-yard drive that gave Kansas City a 10-6 lead with 2:38 remaining. Oakland took over on its own 31-yard line and drove to the Chiefs 14-yard line with 1:17 left. McFadden caught a nine-yard pass then added a five-yard TD run to punctuate a nine-play, 69-yard drive putting the Raiders ahead with 1:07 left in the game. The Chiefs regained possession at their own 20 with 1:07 left and all three timeouts remaining, but Cassel was sacked on third and one and his fourth down pass fell incomplete, allowing Oakland to run out the clock and take home a victory. KC Succop, 23-yard field goal (17-74, 9:25). OAK Janikowski, 48-yard field goal (12-58, 6:49). OAK Janikowski, 54-yard field goal (7-13, 2:58). 12 THE LAST GAME Jaguars 24, Chiefs 21 November 8, 2009 Jacksonville Municipal Stadium 45,546 KANSAS CITY JACKSONVILLE Despite a furious fourth-quarter rally that saw the Chiefs score 15 unanswered points in the final 2:32 thanks to two TD passes from QB Matt Cassel to newly acquired WR Chris Chambers, Jacksonville was able to hold on for a victory vs. Kansas City. The Chiefs were haunted by big plays defensively all day, including a 61-yard TD catch by WR Mike Sims-Walker, who finished the contest with 147 yards. Jacksonville held a sizeable advantage in offensive categories, outgaining the Chiefs by over 100 yards (426 to 301). The Jaguars also held a significant margin in time of possession (36:13 to 23:47). The Kansas City defense started the day on a high note, holding the Jacksonville offense and explosive RB Maurice Jones-Drew to a three and out on its opening possession. The Chiefs offense then moved the ball to the Jacksonville 28-yard line, where K Ryan Succop nailed a 45-yard FG to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead with 9:54 left in the first quarter. On Jacksonville s ensuing possession, Jaguars RB Rashad Jennings punctuated a nine-play drive with a 28-yard TD run to give Jacksonville a 7-3 lead with 4:33 left in the first period. After a three and out by Kansas City, Jacksonville sustained a solid drive, but the Chiefs defense rose to the occasion forcing Jacksonville K Josh Scobee to attempt a 53-yard FG. His attempt was wide left, keeping the score at 7-3. After trading punts with Jacksonville on three straight drives, Kansas City LB Derrick Johnson forced a WR Torry Holt fumble, a play that was upheld by instant replay. S DaJuan Morgan recovered the loose ball at the Jacksonville 20-yard line. RB Kolby Smith, who was activated from Reserve/ PUP a day earlier, rushed for 12 yards to get to the Jacksonville eight-yard line. The drive stalled at the three-yard line setting up Succop for his second FG of the day, a 21-yard kick to narrow the Jaguars lead to 7-6 with 2:38 left in the first half. Jacksonville answered when QB David Garrard connected with Sims-Walker for a 61-yard TD, extending the Jaguars lead to 14-6 with 1:02 left before halftime. After the TD, Kansas City got the ball close enough for a 56-yard Succop FG attempt with time expiring, but into a stiff wind, his kick fell well short, ending the half. On Jacksonville s second possession in the second half, Garrard connected with Sims-Walker for 45 yards to the Kansas City 26-yard line. Seven plays later, Scobee hit a 27-yard FG to extend the lead to 17-6 with 0:47 left in the third quarter. After the two squads exchanged punts throughout the fourth quarter, WR Mike Thomas returned a punt 44 yards to the Kansas City 22-yard line. Five plays later, Jones-Drew rumbled into the end zone from 10 yards out with 4:26 left to play to extend the lead to 24-6 in favor of the Jaguars. Then the Kansas City rally began. Cassel connected with Chambers for a 54-yard TD to make the score with 2:32 left in the game and giving the Chiefs their longest offensive play of the season. Following the score, Succop recovered his own onside kick as it bounced off a Jacksonville player, giving the Chiefs the ball back with just over two minutes left to play. Cassel connected again with Chambers for his second TD catch of the day, this time from five yards out, bringing the score to with 1:01 left to play. The Jaguars recovered Succop s second onside kick and were able to run out the clock, handing the Chiefs a defeat. KC Succop, 45-yard field goal (6-29, 2:53). JAC Jennings, 28-yard run (Scobee kick) (9-79, 5-21). KC Succop, 21-yard field goal (5-17, 5:21). JAC Sims-Walker, 61-yard pass from Garrard (Scobee kick) (5-84, 1:36).
