After posting a 6-8 Patriot League record during his initial season with the program, Marryott guided a lineup last year consisting of just one returning starter and only three players who had scored more than 100-career points to an identical 6-8 record and to the program s first victory in the Patriot League Tournament in six years. While he has been working with the women s program for only a brief period of time, Marryott is no stranger to Naval Academy basketball, having served as an assistant coach with the men s program since the fall of Navy made three Patriot League championship game appearances and reached the 1998 NCAA Touament during his five years with the program. The Midshipmen also won a pair of league regular-season titles and amassed an overall record during his stint with the team. Prior to his beginning his tenure at the Naval Academy, Marryott served as both head coach and athletic director for 10 seasons at the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I. His basketball teams recorded a (.623) record in that decade, during which time he coached future Naval Academy standouts Hassan Booker, Skip Victor, Jehiel Lewis, Victor Mickjel and Matt Sladky. A 1985 graduate of Castleton (Vt.) State, Marryott helped lead the Spartans to the NAIA Tournament during his final season and was inducted into the school s athletic hall of fame in He began his coaching career by serving as a graduate assistant at Vermont during the season. After then spending one season as an assistant coach at Genesse Community College (Batavia, N.Y.), he joined the staff at Providence for the season. 7 The Navy women s basketball team will look to snap a pair of losing skids Saturday when the Mids travel to West Point to face Army in an 11:30 a.m. contest which can be seen live on ESPNU. Navy, on the season and 3-4 in Patriot League games, has dropped back-toback games on the year, as well as four-straight games in the series with the Black Knights. Saturday s game has been designated as the Star Game between the academies, with the winning team also earning the Army-Navy Trophy. Beth Mowins will serve as the play-by-play announcer for the telecast, with Kelly Hanfelt serving as the analyst. In addition to the telecast of the game, Annapolis radio station WNAV-AM 1430 will carry the game both on its network and over the internet at starting at 11:15 a.m. The game will be called by Bob Socci. A Look Back After falling behind by 10 points to Holy Cross with over five minutes to play, Navy had three possessions to tie or take the lead but came away empty each time in an eventual loss to the Crusaders Tuesday night in Alumni Hall. Navy s defense played well in the game, holding Holy Cross to just 38.9 percent shooting from the field and 23.8 percent shooting from behind the three-point line. While Navy outshot Holy Cross in each of the three shooting categories, the Crusaders forced the Mids into 22 turnovers in the game. Lauren Skrel tied a career-high with four three-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points, with Kalen Kropa also reaching double figures in points with a career-best 11 points. Army Preview Saturday s game will be the first in seven days for the Black Knights, who last took to the court for a contest Jan. 28 when Army dropped decision at Colgate. The loss gave Army an 11-9 record on the season and a 5-2 record in league games. The Black Knights are 7-3 on the year in home games, including a 3-0 record in home league contests. Cara Enright is pacing the Army offense with 16.5 points per game, with three additional players averaging over eight points a game. Enright is one of three Black Knights to average over four rebounds a game, with Stefanie Stone s average of 5.7 boards a game leading the squad. Army as a team is averaging and allowing 67 points a game, with the Black Knights hauling in an additional three rebounds a contest ( rpg). In league games, Enright s average of 16.9 points a game leads Army, with Alex McGuire and Stone averaging 16.0 and 12.1 points a game, respectively. Army is shooting 43.3 percent from the field on the year and 45.4 percent in league games, while allowing opponents to shoot 42.1 percent overall and 40.8 percent during the league season. Navy vs. Army -- Part 2 Saturday s game will be the second meeting of the season between the Mids and the Black Knights. Previously, Army posted an victory over Navy Jan. 21 in Alumni Hall. The Black Knights connected on eight of their first 11 shots from the field, while Navy misfired on nine of its first 13 attempts. After trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half, Navy sliced the margin down to five points and had the ball with less than four minutes to play. 8 Academic Awards A trio of Mids received academic honors from the USNA for the 2005 fall semester. Meredith Addington (international relations) was named to both the Dean s and Commandant s lists after posting a 3.53 GPA during the term, as was Kate Hobbs (economics) with a 3.4 GPA, while Ashley Pelzek s (international relations) 3.38 GPA placed her on the Commandant s List. Pelzek has now received academic honors in four of her seven semesters, Hobbs in four of her five semesters and Addington in two terms. Preparing to Serve The senior class at the Naval Academy made their service selections for their upcoming military careers and each of the three seniors on the women s basketball team received naval aviation. Meredith Addington, Ashley Pelzek and Lauren Skrel will be commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy in May and will train to become pilots. What the trio will fly will be determined after several stages of flight school. U.S. Naval Academy Tops in APR The U.S. Naval Academy s athletic program was ranked as the best in the nation among the 117 schools with Division I-A football programs in the NCAA s Academic Performance Rate. Navy also ranked seventh out of 328 Division I institutions. The APR is the fulcrum upon which the entire academic-reform structure rests. Developed as a more real-time assessment of team s academic performance than the six-year graduation rate calculation provides, the APR awards two points each term to student-athletes who meet academic-eligibility standards and who remain with the institution. A team s APR is the total points earned by the team at a given time, divided by the total points possible. The Naval Academy had 10 sports ranked first with an APR of 1,000, meaning every student-athlete on their respective roster remained at the Naval Academy and was also eligible to compete or graduate. 9 Dave Smalley Court As part of the men s and women s doubleheader against Bucknell on Jan. 7, the Naval Academy dedicated the floor in Alumni Hall as Dave Smalley Court in honor of his more than 50-year association with Navy athletics as a midshipman, coach, instructor and administrator. A 1957 graduate of the Academy, Smalley earned six letters as a standout on the basketball and baseball teams. One of only four players to serve as team captain in two seasons, Smalley totaled 856 points during his three-year varsity basketball career. An outfielder in baseball, he hit.419 as a junior to win the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League batting title. Smalley was awarded the Naval Academy Athletic Association Sword at the end of his senior year, presented annually to the member of the graduating class to have personally excelled in athletics during his years of varsity competition. Upon graduation he was commissioned into the Marine Corps, then returned to Navy in 1962 as a physical education instructor and assistant basketball coach. Smalley would eventually take over as the head coach of the program in 1966 and compiled a 10-year record of After stepping down as head coach for the men s team, Smalley became the initial coach for the Navy women s team in He guided the Mids to a 10-1 record as a junior varsity team, then posted 10 winning seasons and a record in 12 campaigns on the varsity level. Smalley received the title of Assistant Director of Athletics in charge of admissions in 1979 and was promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director for Admissions, Academics and Compliance in In that capacity, Smalley handles the admissions process for recruited athletes in each of Navy's 30 varsity sports. Smalley and his staff also monitor the academic progress of Navy's 1,500 student-athletes. Freshmen Contributions Freshmen Emily Cordle and Kalen Kropa have both been effective players off of the Navy bench recently. Cordle has made at least one three-point field goal in eight of the last 10 games and is shooting 43.4 percent (10-of-23) from behind the three-point arc during this time. She played a season-high 24 minutes Jan. 24 vs. American, tying a career-high with six points and hauling in a career-best three caroms. Kalen Kropa also had a strong performance against the Eagles, totaling eight points and a career-high seven assists and not turning the ball over during her 18 minutes of court time. Tuesday against Holy Cross, Kropa scored a career-high 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field in only 18 minutes of playing time. Better vs. Non-League Schools Navy s 7-6 record against non-league opponents this year marked the first time Navy posted a winning record against non-conference foes in three years. The Mids were 4-9 against non-league opponents last year and posted a 7-8 mark two years ago.
