I The Mids have compiled a record of in the previous 19 events it has played host to. This includes a mark of 4-2 under head coach Stefanie Pemper. I Friday will mark the first time Navy and East Carolina will face each other. The Mids have a record of 2-1 against High Point and are 1-1 against Monmouth. I Navy s win Monday night at Air Force extended its winning streak over the Falcons to four in a row, improved its record over the last 10 games against service academy teams to 9-1 and to 10-3 versus service academy teams under Pemper. I Jade Geif was tabbed as the Patriot League Player of the week on Monday. This is after she posted double-doubles in each of Navy s three games last week. I Kara Pollinger is the reigning MVP of the 2011 Navy Classic.

2 2 U.S. Naval Academy Information The U.S. Naval Academy As the undergraduate college of the Naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and reserve commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corps officers. Founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Academy started as the Naval School on 10 acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis with an original class of 55. In 1850 the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requiring midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. Congress authorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelor of science degrees in Today, the Academy offers 18 major fields of study, a wide variety of elective courses and advanced study and research opportunities. Participation, Community Service 87% Midshipman The word midshipman first appeared in English in the 17th century in the form of the word midshipman to designate those men who were stationed amidships, i.e. in the waist or middle portion of the vessel, while on duty. By 1687, however, the second s had been dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally boys, sometimes as young as seven or eight, who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the sailor s trade. In the early days of the American Navy, midshipmen trained aboard ship until they were eventually commissioned as ensigns. With the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, it became possible, as it still is, for a midshipman to enter the Navy directly from civilian life. The name of students at the Naval Academy changed several times between 1870 and 1902, when Congress restored the original title of Midshipman, and it has remained unchanged since. Women at USNA Women were first admitted to the service academies during the summer of Currently, women comprise 21% of the 4,400-member Brigade of Midshipmen. Graduation Success Rate For the eighth year in a row, the United States Naval Academy is at the head of the class for graduating NCAA student-athletes on the Division IA level. Navy graduated 100 percent of its student-athletes in 4 of the 21 NCAA sports reported on and averaged an overall rate of 93 percent for student-athletes in all sports the tied for the eighth-highest mark nationally among Football Bowl Subdivision schools. Academic Majors Students at the Naval Academy can select one of 22 different majors, as well as attain a minor in one of seven languages. Regardless of the major selected, all graduates receive a Bachelor s of Science degree. Charles Zimmermann, Musical Director of the Naval Academy in 1906, with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles of the Class of 1906, as a fight song for the 1907 graduating class instead of the usual class march Zimmermann had composed for previous classes. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy game, and when the Midshipmen won the game, the song became traditional at this game. It gained national exposure in the 1920s and 1930s when it was heard on the radio and was in a number of popular movies. In 1997 a one-hour documentary on the history of Navy football, titled Anchors Aweigh for Honor and Glory, was produced by NFL Films. The film was deemed a success by both critics and fans alike. Besides having the opportunity to go home, over the summer Midshipmen are scattered all over the world visiting a number of ships and bases to learn about the different communities available to them in the Fleet. The Mids led for all but 2:40 of the game and for the final 35 minutes. An early 15-1 run gave Navy an 18-7 advantage, which grew to as large as in the first half. After taking a halftime lead and then holding a advantage early in the second half, Navy built a lead with 13:11 left to play in the game. The Mids would use another 12-3 run to take a lead with 6:34 remaining and would lead by at least 20 points over the rest of the game. Jade Geif connected on 7 of 10 shots from the field in scoring a game-high 15 points. She also grabbed nine boards to miss recording a double-double in the fourth consecutive game by just one carom. M.L. Morrison contributed 10 points and four rebounds, while Audrey Bauer was 3 of 5 from three-point land in scoring 11 points to go along with five boards. Navy held advantages over Air Force in field goal percentage (38.9%-29.8%), three-point field goals made (7-2), rebounds (42-32) and turnovers (15-19). All 10 Mids who played scored at least one point. Pemper vs. Service Academies Navy s win over Air Force gave the Mids a 4-0 record over the last four years vs. the Falcons. Navy also is now 9-1 in its last 10 service academy games and is 10-3 against service academy foes under head coach Stefanie Pemper. Navy Classic The 2012 edition of the Navy Classic marks the 20th time Navy has played host to a regular season tournament. The Mids have compiled an overall record of when playing host to a tournament. Navy has won its own tournament eight times, placed second seven times, finished in third place once and in fourth place one time. She was 10 of 19 (52.6%) from the floor, made five three-point field goals, dished out nine assists and recorded three steals over the two games. 7 Pollinger Shooting Kara Pollinger enjoys playing in tournaments. She was 5 of 5 from three-point range and scored a career-high 24 points against Maine on Dec. 3, 2011, as part of the Navy Classic. This year, the junior made 6 of 7 attempts from outside of the arc in also scoring 24 points against Jackson State on Nov. 24 during the Houston Baptist Husky Classic. Her six triples against Jackson State is tied for the eighth-most made in a game in Navy history, while her percentage of 85.7% is tied for the No. 4 mark at the school. Pollinger s performance against Jackson State came one day after she tallied 16 points against UC Davis. Good Starts Navy opened its season by scoring 42 points in the first half of its game against Iona. That was the second-most number of points scored by a Navy team in the first half of a game under head coach Stefanie Pemper, and was just one point shy of tying the standard. That placement dropped a spot less than two weeks later as the Mids produced 45 points in the first half of its game against Loyola. That was not only the most points scored in the first half of a game in the Pemper era, it also tied the mark for the most scored in either half under the Navy coach. Alix Membreno Alix Membreno carried much of the scoring load during Navy s second game of the year at Stony Brook. She accounted for 17 of Navy s 40 points scored on the day. That effort was the second-most points she had scored in a non-patriot League game in her career (24 vs. NJIT, Jan. 2012). She would then be named to the all-tournament team at the Houston Baptist Husky Classic after totaling 13 points, a career-high tying 15 rebounds, three assists and three steals against UC Davis before accruing 15 points, five rebounds and three assists against Jackson State. Membreno has scored in double figures in five games this season (nine points vs. Saint Peter s and at Air Force) and has snared at least six rebounds in four of the seven outings. Additionally, Membreno has led or shared the lead in assists in three games this season after having done so a total of six times over her first two years. This includes the Loyola game in which she dished out a career-high tying six helpers. M.L. Morrison After totaling 46 points through the end of her sophomore season (27 games), M.L. Morrison has scored 51 points through seven games this season as a junior. Additionally, the junior had scored a total of 17 career points against non-patriot League teams during the regular season before tallying a career-high 12 points in Navy s season opener at Iona. Morrison at Loyola Morrison had another strong effort in Navy s win over Loyola. She posted seven points and a career-high seven rebounds in just 17 minutes of playing time against the Greyhounds. Morrison vs. UC Davis, at Air Force The Texas native then scored 11 points against UC Davis on the opening day of the Houston Baptist Husky Classic. She was 2 of 2 from three-point land and made all four of her field goal attempts on the afternoon. Two days later, Morrison scored 10 points in Navy s victory over Air Force. Kara Pollinger Kara Pollinger opened the year with 17 points against Iona before being held to just five points at Stony Brook. Pollinger then poured in 15 points against Saint Peter s and 13 points against Loyola. She followed up those games by producing 16 points against UC Davis before sinking 6 of 7 three-point shots in scoring 24 points against Jackson State at the Houston Baptist Husky Classic.
