I Monday s game will be the ninth in the Patriot League Tournament between the Mids and the Crusaders. Navy has played more tournament games against Holy Cross than any other league foe. I Holy Cross holds a 6-2 lead in league tournament games played between the teams. I Navy has posted a 12-3 record in league tournament games played in Annapolis, while Holy Cross has a 6-2 record in tournament games played on The Yard. The Mids have a 2-1 record against the Crusaders in tournament games played in Annapolis. I Kara Pollinger has broken the Navy record for the most three-point field goals made in a single season. Her 86 triples broke the mark of 83, which was set by Angela Dobbs in I Audrey Bauer and Jade Geif have tied the Navy men s & women s basketball record for the most games played by a Mid. Bauer, Geif, David Robinson and Vernon Butler all have played 127 career games.

2 2 U.S. Naval Academy Information The U.S. Naval Academy As the undergraduate college of the Naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and reserve commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corps officers. Founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Academy started as the Naval School on 10 acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis with an original class of 55. In 1850 the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requiring midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. Congress authorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelor of science degrees in Today, the Academy offers 18 major fields of study, a wide variety of elective courses and advanced study and research opportunities. Participation, Community Service 88% Midshipman The word midshipman first appeared in English in the 17th century in the form of the word midshipman to designate those men who were stationed amidships, i.e. in the waist or middle portion of the vessel, while on duty. By 1687, however, the second s had been dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally boys, sometimes as young as seven or eight, who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the sailor s trade. In the early days of the American Navy, midshipmen trained aboard ship until they were eventually commissioned as ensigns. With the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, it became possible, as it still is, for a midshipman to enter the Navy directly from civilian life. The name of students at the Naval Academy changed several times between 1870 and 1902, when Congress restored the original title of Midshipman, and it has remained unchanged since. Women at USNA Women were first admitted to the service academies during the summer of Currently, women comprise 21% of the 4,400-member Brigade of Midshipmen. Graduation Success Rate It was announced on Oct. 24, 2013, that for the ninth year in a row, the United States Naval Academy is at the head of the class for graduating NCAA student-athletes on the Division IA level. Navy graduated 100 percent of its student-athletes in 5 of the 21 NCAA sports reported on and averaged an overall rate of 90 percent for student-athletes in all sports tied for the 10th-best mark nationally among Football Bowl Subdivision schools for those students enrolled from Academic Majors Students at the Naval Academy can select one of 24 different majors, as well as attain a minor in one of seven languages. Regardless of the major selected, all graduates receive a Bachelor s of Science degree. Besides having the opportunity to go home, over the summer Midshipmen are scattered all over the world visiting a number of ships and bases to learn about the different communities available to them in the Fleet. 10 10 Navy Recap The Mids the 2014 Patriot League Tournament with an victory over Lehigh Thursday night in Alumni Hall. Navy turned an 8-6 lead into a cushion. Lehigh then cut the lead down to five points at Navy scored the next nine points and then, after a Lehigh field goal, scored the ensuing 10 points to take a lead. In all, the Mids would outscore Lehigh 21-5 over the last six minutes of the half to take a lead at the break. A Navy turnover to start the second half was followed by a Lehigh field goal. The Mids would score on their next five possessions the first three possessions were three-point baskets to take a lead less than four minutes into the frame. The Mids would lead by at least 24 points over the remainder of the game. Navy was from three-point land 6-10 in each half and made 51.7 percent of its shots on the night. The Mids also held Lehigh to 34.5 percent shooting, which included a 2-14 effort from three-point range. The Mids also turned the ball over just nine times while forcing 18 turnovers. Navy had four players score in double figures, with Kara Pollinger who was 5-8 from three-point range leading all players with 17 points. She also added five assists. Jade Geif posted 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Audrey Bauer did not miss a shot from either the field (5-5, 2-2 from three-point range) or foul line (2-2) in scoring 14 points to go along with 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Holy Cross Preview The fifth-seeded Crusaders went on the road to post a victory over No. 4 Bucknell in the semifinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. Holy Cross has tallied a record this year, which includes an 8-6 mark in road games. The Crusaders ended the Patriot League regular season with a 10-8 mark, which featured a 5-4 record in road games. Navy-Lehigh Series Holy Cross holds a advantage in the all-time series with Navy. This includes a 17-8 lead in games played in Annapolis. Navy head coach has guided the Mids to a 12-2 record against the Crusaders. Pemper s Navy teams also are 6-2 in games played against Holy Cross in Annapolis.
