Hofstra Update Hofstra posted a pair of victories overnthe opening few days of the season, defeating Marist, 62-42, at home and going on the road for a win at Stony Brook. The Series Hofstra rallied late for a victory over Navy one year ago in Hempstead, N.Y. 3 The U.S. Naval Academy As the undergraduate college of the Naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and reserve commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corps officers. Founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Academy started as the Naval School on 10 acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis with an original class of 55. In 1850 the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requiring midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. Congress authorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelor of science degrees in Today, the Academy offers 25 major fields of study, a wide variety of elective courses and advanced study and research opportunities. USNA Mission Statement To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future deployment in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government. Participation, Community Service 88% Midshipman The word midshipman first appeared in English in the 17th century in the form of the word midshipman to designate those men who were stationed amidships, i.e. in the waist or middle portion of the vessel, while on duty. By 1687, however, the second s had been dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally boys, sometimes as young as seven or eight, who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the sailor s trade. In the early days of the American Navy, midshipmen trained aboard ship until they were eventually commissioned as ensigns. With the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, it became possible, as it still is, for a midshipman to enter the Navy directly from civilian life. The name of students at the Naval Academy changed several times between 1870 and 1902, when Congress restored the original title of Midshipman, and it has remained unchanged since. Women at USNA Women were first admitted to the service academies during the summer of Currently, women comprise 21% of the 4,400-member Brigade of Midshipmen in this, the 40th anniversary of women being at the USNA. Navy also will play a homecoming game for senior Sarita Condie when the Mids play at Nevada over the Thanksgiving holiday. Regardless of the major selected, all graduates receive a Bachelor s of Science degree. Majors are selected in the spring of one s freshman year. Those officers entering the Marine Corps have the choice of serving in one of the following fields (service assignments are made in the fall of one s senior year): Aviation -- air command and control, anti-air warfare, aviation maintenance, aviation supply, pilot, naval flight officer Ground -- armor, artillery, communications (information systems), engineering, financial management, infantry, logistics, military police Continued Good Defense Navy s defense held 14 of its 19 league foes during the season to a point total below the scoring average which they entered the game with. One of the five teams to improve upon their season scoring average was Lafayette, which needed overtime to surpass its average by 2.5 points, while Colgate bettered its average by just 1.5 points. Including the Patriot League Tournament, the Mids held their league foes to an average of 6.3 points below their season average at the time of the game. Last year s effort comes on the heels of Navy s season when the Mids held 18 of their 20 Patriot League opponents (including two league tournament games) to a point total below the season average they entered the game with. Combined, the Mids have accomplished this feat in 32 of their last 39 games against league opponents Steals Margin Navy finished the season +62 in steals margin, then closed the campaign +67 in steals. The Mids are off to another strong start this season as they are +9 in steals. The Mids are already -20 in free throw attempts this season. She has made at least one three-point field goal in 37 of her last 42 games played including at least a trio of three-point field goals in seven games during the season and is averaging nearly two triples made a game over this span. She began the year by sinking a trio of three-point field goals in scoring 10 points against Wake Forest. Two days later, Dunham was 6-8 from the field 2-4 from three-point range in scoring 14 points at Tennessee. She also shared the team lead in assists against the Lady Vols with three. Stls / Career Kennedy at Tennessee Kennedy had a good all-around game for the Mids during their game at Tennessee. She was 7-12 from the field in scoring 16 points against the Lady Vols. Kennedy also shared the team lead with Laurel Jaunich with six rebounds on the afternoon. Swett at Wake Forest Justice Swett set a new career high and just missed another one during Navy s season opening game at Wake Forest. She dished out a career-best six assists (previous high was five) against the Demon Deacons, while her 12 points left her one shy of tying her career-best effort. Swett s Rebounds Justice Swett averaged 4.4 points a game during the season, but her offensive efforts went beyond her scoring ability as she tied for fourth in the Patriot League with an average of 2.77 offensive rebounds a game. That average nearly matched her prowess on the defensive end of the court where she pulled down an average of 3.1 boards a game. 5 Summertime for a Mid The summer months is when Midshipmen at the Naval Academy have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the Navy or Marine Corps. Besides having the opportunity to go home, over the summer Midshipmen are scattered all over the world visiting a number of ships and bases to learn about the different communities available to them in the Fleet. Following is a listing of what members of the Navy women s basketball team have done over the course of their summers: Sarita Condie Surface cruise on USS Bunker Hill (CG-17, guided missile cruiser) out of Naval Base San Diego. PROTRIMID (San Diego, Calif.): Marine Corps week at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton; surface and submarine cruises at Naval Base Point Loma; aviation block at Naval Air Station North Island.
