The Comets will look to keep their hopes alive for the Greater Cleveland Conference crown as they take on a Raider team that beat them a year ago. 3 PAGE 3 COMETS FLY ABOVE CARDINALS The expectations of a football rivalry were fulfilled last Friday night at Mentor s Jerome T. Osborne Stadium as overtime was required to seal the outcome. Mentor started the game with the ball and took the opening drive to the end zone for an early 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Solon put Trevon Raphael at Quarterback and he took off with the ball for a 53 yard touchdown rush. For the next 24 minutes and one second of play, both team s defensive units battled and held the opposition scoreless. Solon s Grant McCurry intercepted Mentor s Quarterback late in the third quarter which setup a 12 yard rushing touchdown from Khalil Eichelberger to give Solon the lead. Mentor came back and tied the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter on a nine yard rush and then T. Raphael J. Barnett took the lead with 9:19 to go in the game on a 27 yard rush. With 4:18 left, Solon Quarterback Pat McQuaide hit Ethan Wong in the end zone from 40 yards out. With Harrison Rich s extra point, the contest was again tied. Efforts by both teams to end the game in regulation proved unsuccessful and overtime was required. Mentor started the overtime period with the ball and scored on their first play with a 20 yard rush. The Comets took their turn and pounded yards out to eventually get Jeff Barnett in the end zone. Solon took the opportunity to win the game right then and went for the two point conversion. Pat McQuaide connected with Nick Close for the three yards and Solon picked up their seventh win of the year in stunning fashion on the road. RJ Howard led Solon s defense with 17 tackles. Ervin offense in the second half. With Solon s win at Mentor, the Comets and Cardinals are now tied for second place in the Greater Cleveland Conference standings. Euclid remains at the top with an undefeated conference record and they will host Mentor on Friday night. The Comets return to Stewart Field on Friday for their final regular season home game of the year looking to avenge last year s loss to Shaker Heights. A LOOK AT THE REGION With two regular season games remaining, the quest to capture a spot in the top eight in Region 1 is heating up. Canton McKinley is the lone undefeated team in the region and Solon, Mentor, and Euclid each have one loss. With point averages being so close, the results of the next two games will have a significant impact on the final rankings. NO ISSUES IN OVERTIME Last Friday night s win at Mentor marked the seventh time since 2003 that the Comets found themselves in an overtime situation. In all seven overtime appearances, Solon has been successful. In five of the seven games, Solon has won the game in just one extra period. Two games saw Solon take three overtime periods to win. First in 2003, Solon took down Mayfield in triple overtime and then again it took triple overtime to defeat Strongsville in 2004, Overtime wins have come in 2006 at Hudson, 2009 in the playoffs against Mayfield, 2010 at Strongsville, and 2011 at Twinsburg.

4 PAGE 4 STAY ON TRACK With a win last Friday night at Mentor, the Solon Comets have put themselves back in position for a shot at the Greater Cleveland Conference title and a home playoff game come Week Eleven. While the thrill of that overtime win at Mentor can still be in the forefront come Monday morning, the road to Canton shows signs for Shaker Heights. Any signs that are missed will certainly cause unwanted detours. Shaker Heights captured their first win in the series with Solon in a game last year at Rupp Field. The Raiders held Solon to 115 total yards of offense and the only score for the Comets came when Sam Bubonics pulled in an interception in the first quarter and went 58 yards to the end zone. Solon gave up 225 total yards and two touchdowns in the second half and ultimately put a damper on any playoff hopes they had for the 2017 season. A year later, Shaker Heights has put together a strong season with two non-conference wins and three wins against league opponents. In those five wins, the Raiders have put up 141 points and overall this season they are averaging 22.6 points per game. Those scoring statistics show the part Shaker Heights plays in the strength of the Greater Cleveland Conference. Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide looks forward to this week because his Comets control their own destiny and they are staring at tremendous opportunities as the regular season is about to wind down. Everyone knows how exciting things got last week at Mentor, said McQuaide. We were thrilled to leave there with a win and now we get to come home to honor our Seniors on Friday night. We ve talked about the quality of teams on our schedule and we will see another quality team this week. 6 HEAD COMET PAGE 6 In his sixteenth year as head football coach at Solon High School, Jim McQuaide has posted a stellar record of McQuaide began his career as an assistant coach at Warren John F. Kennedy High School, Mayfield High School, and St. Edward High School. His head coaching career began in 1989 in Louisville, Ohio at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The 1990 season started Coach McQuaide s tenure at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio. McQuaide traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1999 to become the head coach of the LaSalle Lancers through the 2002 season. Jim McQuaide Sixteenth Season at Solon Head Coach In 2003, Jim McQuaide was named head football coach at Solon High School. To date, McQuaide has led the Comets to 8 league titles and 12 playoff appearances. Under McQuaide, the Comets have protected their home turf by accomplishing a record at Stewart Field. McQuaide has been named Western Reserve Conference Coach of the Year three times. He was named to the staff of the 2004 Ohio Big 33 All-Star squad and has received the Cleveland Browns Coach of the Week honors four times throughout his tenure at Solon. He was featured in Cleveland Magazine in 1994 as one of Northeast Ohio s Top Coaches. His teams have been featured as Team of the Week many times throughout his career. The Ohio High School Athletic Association honored Coach McQuaide in 2009 with their Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award. 2009, 2010, and 2011 saw McQuaide as NOC Valley Division Coach of the Year. In September of 2012, Coach McQuaide was inducted into the Warren, Ohio Sports Hall of Fame. Also in 2012, he was selected for induction into the John F. Kennedy High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
