3 PAGE 3 ROLLING, ROLLING, ROLLING The third Greater Cleveland Conference game of the season took the Solon Comets to Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium last Friday night. Harrison Rich kicked a 30-yard field goal to give Solon an early lead until the Blue Devils started the second quarter with a game tying field goal. Throughout this season the second quarter has been Solon s best quarter and against Brunswick, the Comets held true to their trends. Quarterback Pat McQuaide started the offensive onslaught with a one yard touchdown rush and then Sam Bubonics made sure that Solon's defensive unit wasn t forgotten when he returned an interception 50 yards to the end zone. With 2:02 to go in the first half, McQuaide connected with Bubonics on a nine yard pass for a touchdown. Just 61 seconds later, the two connected again to score from eight yards out. Harrison Rich was successful on all four extra points in the second quarter and Solon led 31-3 before going into the break. Brunswick put together a drive in the third quarter to add to their point total but again Solon answered when Bubonics caught a 12- yard McQuaide pass to take a lead. Jimmy Casamento connected with Ethan Wong for a 31-yard touchdown catch to force running clock rules in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Noah Jahnke, who handles the kickoff duties for the Comets, kicked his first career extra E. Wong J. Casamento point following the 31-yard touchdown catch. With under three minutes in the game, the Blue Devils put together another scoring drive but Solon s dominance ended the game with a final score. Brunswick fell to 0-6 on the year and will N. Jahnke take on 0-6 Elyria on Friday at the new Ely Stadium. CHECKING THE NUMBERS 107 Total number of points that the Comets have scored in the second quarter through six games. That s an average of 17.8 points in the second quarter this season. 51 Number of tackles that Senior Linebacker Jeff Barnett has after six games. 7 The latest Associated Press poll put the Comets at number seven among all teams in Division I. For the first time this season, Solon received a first place vote from the writers. SUPERLATIVE SCORER Since the beginning of the Run and Hit era at Solon High School in 2003, there have been 26 games in which a player has caught two touchdown passes in a game. This was done by Rick Tonelli, Butch Cuccia, Tres Barksdale, Cory Stuart, Darian Hicks, Drew Barksdale, Kollyn Crenshaw, Jake McCurry, Darryl Sinclair, Thomas Wilks, and Trevon Raphael. After 178 total games, the record for most touchdown passes caught in a game now stands at three and it is held by Senior Sam Bubonics. Quarterback Pat McQuaide threw three touchdown passes for a total of 29 yards to Bubonics which kept extending Solon s lead at Brunswick last week. Bubonics now joins the other Comet greats who hold single game records in the list of Solon Superlatives.
4 PAGE 4 EASY? NO WAY! Discussion regarding the strength of teams in Division I and in the Greater Cleveland Conference has been repeated in this space over the years and more recently throughout this 2018 season. After six games, only eight teams remain with an undefeated record among the 71 total teams in the Division I classification. As for the GCC, four teams have undefeated league records and come Friday night, two teams will show one loss in league play. The Week Seven schedule puts Shaker Heights at Mentor and Euclid at Solon. The quest for a conference crown goes one direction towards Osborne Stadium in Mentor and it also requires a trip to Inwood Drive in Solon. On top of the GCC implications, games on Friday night also have the ability to send a spiral right down the line in the Division I, Region 1 standings. Only one guarantee comes in the seventh week of the season: nothing is easy. Anyone who just shows up and expects to stand around and hope that what they want will be handed to them will most definitely be disappointed. Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide, who is no stranger to the proverbial big game, talks about what Friday s matchup with Euclid means to his team. We re thrilled for the opportunity to be able to play for what we want, said McQuaide. So far we have been able to come out ahead against some very good teams and now we get another chance to secure where we want to be in five weeks. We had a tough game last year at Euclid and that game was a part of the things that we needed to fix and learn from last season. Friday night is Homecoming at Solon and we hope to have a large group of our former players on hand. These guys have all been a part of some tremendous games over the years and we need their help as we continue to work toward the ultimate goal.
