Woodward, Hughes Playoffs Move to Friday Nights New in 2017, all playoff gams during the first four rounds will be played on Friday nights. Also announced was the format for the state championship games, which will be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. The new playoff regions and playoff format was approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors at their June meeting. For a few years now we have studied the possibility of moving all playoff games to Friday nights for the first four rounds, OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg said. Due to so many more college football games being played on Saturday nights, attendance at our Saturday playoff games has steadily declined, and more potential playoff sites have said they cannot host games on Saturdays. We now have enough playoff sites to handle all the games on one night, and the football coaches association was in support of this change, too, because teams will get to stay on their normal weekly schedule of playing on Friday night. 4 PAGE 4 A TALE OF TWO HALVES Solon s fourth Greater Cleveland Conference game came against the Euclid Panthers last Friday night at Sparky DiBiasio Stadium. Euclid put together a 198 yard first half and scored three touchdowns to take a 20-0 lead into the locker room. While Euclid struck first in the third quarter, the Comets came out firing. Four straight touchdowns for Solon started when Grant McCurry caught a 38- yard pass from JT Caver at the halfway point of the third quarter. In Solon s next offensive series, Trevon Raphael went 55 yards to the end zone on a catch from Caver. Thomas Wilks, who has scored in each game this season, was looking to keep his streak alive and did so on an eight yard rush to start the fourth quarter. Then later in the fourth, Caver took matters into his own hands and went 44 yards to the end zone. The Comets took the lead, 28-27, after Michael Rutsky was perfect on extra G. McCurry M. Laubscher JT Caver point. With exactly three minutes left in the game, Euclid scored on a five yard rush and the Comets were unable to answer. The Panthers improved to 6-1 on the year and remain undefeated in Greater Cleveland Conference play. Solon falls to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in GCC matchups. Despite surrendering 33 points on the night, Solon s defenders held Euclid to 85 offensive yards through the air. Michael Laubscher led the team in tackles with 14 overall, including three tackles for loss. Euclid will remain home this week and take on Brunswick. Euclid and Mentor both remain unbeaten in conference play. The two extended the Comets fourth quarter lead to give the team a 37-8 victory. 8 A win on Friday night at Stewart Field will continue the Comets quest for an undefeated home record in Since the inception of the Run & Hit Era in 2003, Solon has put together seven seasons in which the teams have defended their home turf perfectly. 9 Not only is Solon s defense holding opponents to an average of 17 points per game this season, the unit has intercepted the opposition nine times. A. Mason Andrew Mason leads all defenders with three interceptions on the year. Zyon Mowry, Ryan McCurry, JT Caver, and Sam Bubonics have also gotten in the way of opposing Quarterbacks. COMETS FOR A CURE Friday night s game against Mentor will conclude Solon s annual Comets for a Cure Week. The Boys Soccer team started the week with a big victory over Mayfield on Saturday night. Girls Soccer will continue the collective efforts with a game on Wednesday. Volleyball s night will be Thursday in Solon s Main Gym. Support the Comets this week as they raise money for cancer research.
5 PAGE 5 PLENTY TO DO The task of refocusing has begun for the 2017 Solon Comets following last week s loss at Euclid. The Comets, who were dominated by the Panthers in the first half, put together an outstanding effort in the second half to ultimately fall by just five points. Tack on the three points that separated Solon from Stow in the third week of the season and a realization that Solon isn t far off from an undefeated effort in the last seven games is very real. The Comets have had a hand in determining the top spot in the Greater Cleveland Conference since it began, and this season still gives Solon an opportunity to take a stand. The Mentor Cardinals will visit Stewart Field on Friday featuring a 6-1 record on the season. Their lone loss came in a Week Two matchup with unbeaten St. Ignatius. Through seven games, Mentor has racked up 3,409 yards of offense with an average of 7.5 yards per play. Solon s defense has yet to be intimidated by yard gaining offenses in 2017, as opponents have only averaged 4.1 yards per play. When you play in one of the premier leagues in the state of Ohio, every matchup exudes an enormous amount of hype, especially when the numbers are analyzed. For Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide, Friday night s opportunity is one his team can certainly look forward to. After falling short last week at Euclid we are thrilled to be back on our home field this week, said Coach McQuaide. In order to be successful, we have a lot to accomplish throughout the week in practice. Every game in our league is a battle and we must make sure that we are ready to rise to the challenges.
