3 THAT S TWO... A change of venue for the Solon Comets last Friday night did not stop them from continuing the dominance they began on August 24th. In the 2018 home opener against Twinsburg, the Comets used all of their weapons to put 38 points on the Tigers and post their second shutout in as many games. Khalil Eichelberger began the scoring for Solon with a five yard touchdown rush at the 5:13 mark of the first quarter. On the next offensive drive, Pat McQuaide found Nick Close for a nine yard score. The second quarter saw McQuaide connect with Ethan Wong in the corner of the end zone from 22-yards out and then Khalil Eichelberger scored twice on five yard rushes. To cap the scoring for Solon, Jimmy Casamento hit Greg Parries for a 27- yard touchdown reception with 9:20 to N. Close P. McQuaide E. Wong go in the game. The defensive Comets were led by Michael Laubscher with 10 tackles, David Marbury with nine tackles, and Sam Bubonics with a key interception. With the result of Friday s game, Twinsburg fell to 1-1 on the year and will return home in Week Three to face the 1-1 Aurora Greenmen. THE BASH OF ALL BASHES The week of the 2018 Band Bash is finally here and the Solon marchers are looking forward to their big event. Featuring bands from nine area schools, the event will showcase some of the best high school musicians in Northeast Ohio. The football team wishes the band the best of luck this weekend and thanks them for their support. In games against Aurora and Twinsburg, the Comets have kept the opposition from scoring and have only given up a total of 115 yards. The last time that Solon posted two consecutive shutouts was in the middle of the 2011 season against Normandy and Medina. Solon s defense allowed an average of 108 yards in those two games and gave their offense ample opportunity to post 65 points. Since the inception of the Run and Hit Era at Solon in 2003, the Comets have completely closed the end zone 23 times. EXCITING EICHELBERGER After just two games sophomore running back Khalil Eichelberger is making a name for himself on the football field. Currently he sits with 272 total rushing K. Eichelberger yards and 81 receiving yards. More impressive than the yardage attached to his name is the number of times he has gone into the end zone. In the first game against Aurora, he scored three touchdowns and then did exactly the same thing against Twinsburg. Eichelberger is certainly on pace to have a 1,000 yard season and if he does that, he will have joined some pretty good company in Solon s record books. DESERVING OF HONORS Most student-athletes can point to a specific teacher or counselor who made a difference for them throughout their high school career. Solon High School student-athletes have the distinct privilege of learning from some of the best teachers and counselors in the state of Ohio and at this week s game, the Senior players will recognize this one person who has had an impact on their lives. Continued on page 4.
4 PAGE 4 DESERVING OF HONORS Continued from page 3. As has been Solon Football tradition, players give their opposite color game jersey to someone to wear during the school day and to the games. For this week s game against Stow, Senior football players will ask the teacher or counselor of their choosing to wear their jersey in school on Friday and in the stadium on Friday night. Following the first quarter this week, the Seniors will honor these impactful people on the field. The teachers and counselors that have been selected by the Senior players are Claire Stolz, Trish Kruse, Crystal Cadorini, Bill Nyerges, Maggie Locke, Karen Smith, Sean Fisher, Rob Northrup, Aaron Jeter, Jarad Kleinhenz, Nancy Schikowski, Beth Mackens, Ann Trocchio, Nanci Bush, Sarah Burgess, Jane Langston, Pete Bergman, Nicole Geiger, Jen Buemi, Dan McKeen, Jeff Pehanic, Kirsten Ahrens, Russ Carnes, and Matt Kirk. Our players are extremely grateful to those listed above who have been true difference makers in their lives. FIX IT RIGHT NOW Not once or twice, but three times, in three consecutive meetings have the Stow Bulldogs taken down the Solon Comets. The first was in 2015 in the second round of the OHSAA playoffs. Stow advanced to the Regional Final that year after their win over Solon. Next came the third game of the 2016 season, a loss at home to the Bulldogs which turned out to be Solon s only loss on that year s regular season docket. Then came 2017, Solon s first trip to Stow since 2006, and after 48 minutes, Solon found themselves down by three yet again. Not many teams are as aware as Solon is at the level of success that Stow has had over the last number of years. When going up against teams like Stow, who have made consecutive playoff appearances, you must know and understand that you are in for a battle and better play smart football. Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide, who is no stranger to the playoffs himself, credits his team for the effort shown in the first two games of the season, but acknowledges that more work must be done. We faced two quality opponents to start the year and we took big strides in improving our game from the first to the second week, said McQuaide. We have another huge test on Friday night and we are going to need a good week of preparation to ensure that we are ready to do what is required of us when we get on the field. Obviously we have come up short against Stow in the recent past and now is our chance to take the next step. These are the kinds of games that we want to be in and our preparation and effort must be at the level needed to compete in a marquee matchup. Another opportunity comes in a few short days. Just like the previous opportunities, this one is also a big deal. We hope to see you Friday night on Inwood Road.
