Also announced was the format for the state championship games, which will be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. The new playoff regions and playoff format was approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors at their June meeting. For a few years now we have studied the possibility of moving all playoff games to Friday nights for the first four rounds, OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg said. Due to so many more college football games being played on Saturday nights, attendance at our Saturday playoff games has steadily declined, and more potential playoff sites have said they cannot host games on Saturdays. We now have enough playoff sites to handle all the games on one night, and the football coaches association was in support of this change, too, because teams will get to stay on their normal weekly schedule of playing on Friday night. 4 PAGE 4 ANOTHER YEAR The debut of the 2017 edition of the Solon Comets will be Friday night at Stewart Field. Solon begins their quest for a 22nd appearance in the state playoffs as they take on Aurora to start the regular season. Friday s matchup with Aurora will be the third consecutive opening week game between the two schools. In the renewal of this historic rivalry in 2015, the Greenmen came to Solon and took down the Comets, Solon retaliated in 2016 with a 36-6 victory. Following their opening game loss to Solon last year, Aurora went on to win 10 straight games before a season ending loss in the second round of the playoffs. Solon completed a 9-1 regular season in 2016 and was victorious over Canton Glen- Oak in the playoffs. The Comets season ended at the hands of the St. Ignatius Wildcats in a second round game at Mentor. Both Solon and Aurora begin this new season as defending conference champions and both teams look to build on the historical success of the previous season. Following the Comet s tilt with Aurora, they will travel to Twinsburg and Stow before the third year of play in the Greater Cleveland Conference begins in Week Four. Solon s GCC games against Strongsville, Brunswick, Mentor, and Medina will be at Stewart Field, while games against the remaining conference foes will take place on the road. NON-CONFERENCE DOMINATION Since 2003, Solon has posted a (.738) record against non-conference opponents. Fifteen of the 31 wins have come at Stewart Field. Under Coach McQuaide, the Comets are undefeated in games against teams from the Federal League, Akron City Series, and Great Lakes Conference. FIRE IT UP! 286 days will have passed since the Solon Comets have last taken the field. While many things might look different, this is still the same group that will Run and Hit to defend their turf. Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide, who enters his fifteenth season at the helm of the Comets, says that 2017 could be a great year for his team. We talk a lot about attitude, effort, dependability, said Coach T. Ward McQuaide. All of those things are very important as we begin what we hope is a season that lasts many more than just ten weeks. It is a great opportunity for us to start the season at home against Aurora. We know they will be ready to play and we must work to be ready as well. We ve had a good camp and many guys have shown that they want to play on Friday night. Now, they get to prove that they can play on Friday night.
