The regional alignment in Division I will now be the same as Divisions II-VII, in that, each division is split into four regions, and the top eight teams in each region will advance to the post season. OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg commented that moving to four regions in Division I is a great decision. First and foremost, it cuts down significantly on travel, especially in the first round. It also allows Division I to go back to having a true regional championship game in the third round, followed by the state semifinals. In 2013, the OHSAA created an additional football division and put the largest 72 schools in Ohio into Division I, but only created two regions in the division. 4 PAGE 4 KICK OFF APPROACHING The 2016 edition of the Solon Comets will debut on Friday night at Aurora High School. Friday night s game will mark the second straight Week One matchup for these two teams and Solon looks to begin the year differently than in Aurora s 327 yards of offense a year ago paved the way for their first win of the season. Following their win at Solon, the Greenmen won four straight before losing at Highland, which ended up being their only regular season loss. A two point loss to Nordonia in the first round of the playoffs has Aurora hungry to make a deep run in EXPERIENCE RUNS DEEP Solon returns 18 players with significant Friday night experience as either a starter or alternate in Darryl Sinclair, Melvin Jackson, Jake McCurry, Joe Bubonics, Anthony Zavarella, Matt Brown, Maurice Ashford, Chris Glaser, Zach Beder, Jacob Gross, Nate Westrich, Ryan McCurry, Casey Maniglia, Andrew Mason, and Nate Leskovec all saw significant time as starters at their respective positions. Taj Ward, Devon Brown, and Jalen Brown were alternates on the team a year ago and will enter this season having played many valuable minutes on the field. Six of these 18 players were starters in 2014 and have been tremendous contributors to the team. RETURNING STATISTICAL LEADERS Receiving Rec. Yds. Avg. Last year, Brown was a starter at Linebacker and was named First Team All Greater Cleveland Conference. At Linebacker for Solon in 2015, he had 120 tackles (41 solos, 59 assists, 20 tackles for loss), caught two interceptions, and recovered two fumbles. Joe Bubonics started at Free Safety and alternated at Quarterback for the Comets last year. He was Special Mention AP All Northeast Ohio and First Team All Greater Cleveland Conference. Nate Westrich also returns with two years of starting experience. In 2015, he was named Special Mention AP All Northeast Ohio and First Team All Greater Cleveland Conference. MAKE WEEK ONE BLUE With a significant number of returning players on this current Solon J. McCurry football team, it can be said that the Comets are loaded with experience. However, new experiences will come in this 2016 season and that past experience, which can be very important, will not mean a whole lot if you re not prepared to accomplish the task that is laid in front of you. Key for the Solon Comets in this Week One experience at Aurora s Veterans Stadium will be for each guy to focus on doing his job. We have had a great month of practice, said Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide. The experience of Friday night football is a lot N. Westrich different than scrimmages and practice so now we must be sure we are ready to give our best effort at Aurora. If everyone does what they are supposed to do, we could be very successful this season. Aurora is a great team and we are thrilled to be able to compete in this rivalry game.
