Middletown Christian, Woodward Playoffs Move to Friday Nights New in 2017, all playoff gams during the first four rounds will be played on Friday nights. Also announced was the format for the state championship games, which will be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. The new playoff regions and playoff format was approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors at their June meeting. For a few years now we have studied the possibility of moving all playoff games to Friday nights for the first four rounds, OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg said. Due to so many more college football games being played on Saturday nights, attendance at our Saturday playoff games has steadily declined, and more potential playoff sites have said they cannot host games on Saturdays. We now have enough playoff sites to handle all the games on one night, and the football coaches association was in support of this change, too, because teams will get to stay on their normal weekly schedule of playing on Friday night. 4 ONWARD & UPWARD The third Greater Cleveland Conference matchup on the 2017 schedule went the way of the Solon Comets last Thursday night. The Brunswick Blue Devils, who were 1-1 in league play, struck first against Solon to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Sam Bubonics recovered a Thomas Wilks fumble in the end zone to answer Brunswick s score and the Comets tied the game with Michael Rutsky s extra point. Solon dominated the second quarter with a 1- yard Wilks rush at the 8:59 mark, followed by Pat McQuaide connecting with Andrew Mason for an 80-yard score. JT Caver later found Sam Bubonics for a 68- yard touchdown catch. Michael Rutsky was perfect on extra point and Solon held a 28-7 lead at the half. The Comets A. Mason T. Ward defense held Brunswick to 100 yards of offense in the second half and had star performances from Andrew Mason, who had 12 tackles on the night, and Taj Ward who came up with an interception. Brunswick fell to 3-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. They will return to Brunswick AutoMart Stadium this week after two straight road games to take on the 1-5 Elyria Pioneers. Last week s win keeps Solon with an undefeated conference record and they will square off with the 5-1 Euclid Panthers on Friday. The Comets went on to score two more times in the second quarter that night and led 26-0 at the half. 10 Comet defender Da Veon Parker led all returning defensive players with 10 tackles last year against Euclid. He combined for eight assists and two tackles for loss. 7 Entering the seventh week of the season, the Solon Comets sit at number seven in Division I, Region 1. 5 PAGE 5 BACK ON THE ROAD The 31 day stretch that separates the contenders from the pretenders begins now as the calendar has turned to the month of October. Four games remain on the regular season docket and with a record in October games since 2003, the Solon Comets are aware of the extreme importance of what lies ahead. Setting themselves up for a meaningful month, the Comets enter the seventh week of the season with a 5-1 overall record. The lone loss came by three points at Stow in the season s third game. Since that loss, Solon has focused on the improvements required to compete with the stellar schedule of teams that make up the Greater Cleveland Conference. Three straight wins, over Elyria, Strongsville, and Brunswick have the Comets tied for first in the GCC standings. The other teams with undefeated league records happen to be Solon s next two opponents. Up first, the Euclid Panthers, who are dedicating a new stadium on Friday night, have averaged 35.3 points per game and have captured wins against Glenville, Aurora, Medina, Elyria, and Strongsville. Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide notes the importance of playing well late in the season because after all, those goals from back in August are very much within reach as the regular season has passed the halfway point. We are continuing to improve our play, said Coach McQuaide. We have had guys step up and be big contributors to our team over the last few weeks. Everyone must be focused on the effort required to take the team to where it wants to go. We will see a very good Euclid team on Friday night and we must compete for the entire 48 minutes to be successful. Euclid High School From Solon & Warren: Take US-422 west to I-271 north. 6 HEAD COMET PAGE 6 In his fifteenth year as head football coach at Solon High School, Jim McQuaide has posted a stellar record of McQuaide began his career as an assistant coach at Warren John F. Kennedy High School, Mayfield High School, and St. Edward High School. His head coaching career began in 1989 in Louisville, Ohio at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The 1990 season started Coach McQuaide s tenure at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio. McQuaide traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1999 to become the head coach of the LaSalle Lancers through the 2002 season. Jim McQuaide Fifteenth Season at Solon Head Coach In 2003, Jim McQuaide was named head football coach at Solon High School. To date, McQuaide has led the Comets to 8 league titles and 12 playoff appearances. Under McQuaide, the Comets have protected their home turf by accomplishing a record at Stewart Field. McQuaide has been named Western Reserve Conference Coach of the Year three times. He was named to the staff of the 2004 Ohio Big 33 All-Star squad and has received the Cleveland Browns Coach of the Week honors four times throughout his tenure at Solon. He was featured in Cleveland Magazine in 1994 as one of Northeast Ohio s Top Coaches. His teams have been featured as Team of the Week many times throughout his career. The Ohio High School Athletic Association honored Coach McQuaide in 2009 with their Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award. 2009, 2010, and 2011 saw McQuaide as NOC Valley Division Coach of the Year. In September of 2012, Coach McQuaide was inducted into the Warren, Ohio Sports Hall of Fame. Also in 2012, he was selected for induction into the John F. Kennedy High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
