The regional alignment in Division I will now be the same as Divisions II-VII, in that, each division is split into four regions, and the top eight teams in each region will advance to the post season. OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg commented that moving to four regions in Division I is a great decision. First and foremost, it cuts down significantly on travel, especially in the first round. It also allows Division I to go back to having a true regional championship game in the third round, followed by the state semifinals. In 2013, the OHSAA created an additional football division and put the largest 72 schools in Ohio into Division I, but only created two regions in the division. 4 PAGE 4 COMETS FALL IN WEEK THREE Solon s Week Three matchup with Stow certainly lived up to its pregame hype. Stow received the opening kickoff from the Comets and A. Mason T. Wilks M. Brown A. Baek drove for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. Solon put up first quarter points at the 3:38 mark when Andy Baek connected on a 29 yard field goal. The next scoring play wasn t until Thomas Wilks went two yards into the end zone with 1:56 to go in the half. Baek was good on the extra point and Solon entered the break with a 10-7 lead. The third quarter was entirely defense and special teams and that continued for most of the fourth quarter. With 1:28 to go in the game, the Bulldog Quarterback scored on a five yard rush. The extra point was no good, but Stow had the lead and held it until the end of the game. Matt Brown, Darryl Sinclair, and Andrew Mason were each statistical leaders for the Comets against Stow. Brown finished the game with 18 tackles, and both Mason and Wilks each caught five passes from Quarterback Joe Bubonics for a combined 44 yards. Both Solon and Stow will begin conference play in Week Four. Solon heads to Brunswick for their first Greater Cleveland Conference matchup in Stow will host the 1-2 Wadsworth Grizzlies on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium. GCC teams went a combined against non-conference opponents. In games against schools in the Cleveland Senate League and Western Reserve Conference, GCC teams were undefeated. The All-American Conference, Greater Catholic League, and Southwestern Conference each were represented well in games against the GCC. Combined they put together 4 victories over the course of the last three weeks. Entering this first week of conference play, the only team with a perfect record is the Medina Bees. The Bees are averaging 56 points per game and have only given up 20. They will welcome Elyria to Ken Dukes Stadium on Friday night. Last year, in the inaugural season of GCC play, Solon and Euclid shared the conference title. Euclid will visit Solon this year on September 23. DIVISION I UPDATE Twenty teams in Division I will begin the fourth week of the season with an undefeated record as conference play begins to heat up. Not only does the Greater Cleveland Conference begin league play, but the bigger leagues that encompass Division I teams throughout the state begin their conference schedules as well. All four regions in Division I each have tight races going on for the eight playoff spots that will be available at the end of October. Starting this season, the OHSAA has partnered with Joe Eitel for updates to the computer points and team schedules. All of the information can be accessed by visiting The first Associated Press polls will be released on Monday, September 12. The OHSAA website tracks each week s polls on the football page.

5 PAGE 5 MOVING ON The third week of the season is now complete and the Comets look towards Friday s game against Brunswick. Last week s game looked to be all but Solon s for the taking, but Stow stunned Solon with their late touchdown drive to take the lead and win the game. That happened in the previous game and now there is an upcoming 48 minutes on Friday to turn the ship around. For Brunswick, this game against Solon gives them a chance to come back home after two very close losses against Austintown Fitch and Brecksville. The Blue Devils fell short by seven at Fitch and then lost in overtime last week against Brecksville. They are a hungry team who has improved each year under Coach Luke Beal and a victory on Friday could increase their post season chances immensely. Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium opened in 2012 and the Comets have not yet won in the new facility. Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide is well aware of this alarming statistic and knows that his guys have a big task ahead of them this week. We lost a tough game last week against Stow, there is no doubt about that, said McQuaide. A big part of being successful is how well you deal with the adversity that you face. We need to continue to improve this week so that we can finish Friday the way we want. We know that Brunswick is a very good team and this will be a big test for us as we start conference play.
