Also announced was the format for the state championship games, which will be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. The new playoff regions and playoff format was approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors at their June meeting. For a few years now we have studied the possibility of moving all playoff games to Friday nights for the first four rounds, OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg said. Due to so many more college football games being played on Saturday nights, attendance at our Saturday playoff games has steadily declined, and more potential playoff sites have said they cannot host games on Saturdays. We now have enough playoff sites to handle all the games on one night, and the football coaches association was in support of this change, too, because teams will get to stay on their normal weekly schedule of playing on Friday night. 4 PAGE 4 SOLON GOES DOWN BY 3 For the second straight year, the Solon Comets were defeated by the Stow Bulldogs by three points. In what was a great Friday night football atmosphere at Bulldog Stadium, both defenses exhorted their strength and kept their opposition scoreless in the first quarter. Stow struck first with a one yard rush in the second quarter and then was successful on a 35-yard field goal seven minutes later. With a 10-0 deficit at the half, the Comets had some work to do. They began the third quarter with Thomas Wilks 86-yard touchdown rush and then followed in the next drive with another score as Joe Cartellone hit Trevon Raphael with a 73-yard completion. Stow struck with a two yard rushing score with 11:25 to go in the game and the T. Raphael M. Laubscher Comets were unable to post anymore points. Solon s defensive charge was led by Zyon Mowry and Nate Leskovec. Both defenders finished with 16 tackles for the night. Mowry s total consisted of 12 assists and Leskovec had six tackles for loss. Stow finishes their nonconference schedule with three wins and will start Suburban League play against the 2-1 North Royalton Bears on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium. Robinson Patriots Linebacker corps. A native of Massillon, Robinson was a three year starter for the Tigers, a captain of the team his senior year, and was given honors as a member of the First Team AP All-Northeast Ohio Inland Team. He went on to start at Receiver for Walsh University before accepting coaching positions at Norton High School, Canton GlenOak High School, and Canton McKinley High School. We are thrilled to have Jesse as a part of our staff, said Head Coach Jim McQuaide. He has been around football all of his life and has been a tremendous asset to our program in the short time that he has been here. Coach Robinson and his wife of ten years, Jennifer, reside in North Royalton with their daughter Joanna (7) and son, Jesse III (5). I am excited to be a part of this community, who takes great pride in its academics, as well as athletics, said Coach Robinson. I am honored to be on this coaching staff and to have an opportunity to help these Solon Comets succeed. NON-CONFERENCE TILTS Six of the eight teams in the Greater Cleveland Conference have finished their non-conference schedules. Brunswick and Shaker Heights will take on non-conference opponents this weekend making up for the schedule change. Their conference matchup last week had Brunswick taking the game by two points. The Raiders and Blue Devils have an opportunity to improve on the GCC s 13-9 record against nonconference opponents in 2017.

5 PAGE 5 DIVISION I UPDATE Nineteen teams in Division I will begin the fourth week of the season with an undefeated record as conference play heats up across the state of Ohio. Not only does the Greater Cleveland Conference begin league play, but the bigger leagues that encompass Division I teams throughout the state begin their conference schedules this week, as well. All four regions in Division I have tight races going on for the eight playoff spots that will be awarded following the tenth game of the season. Continuing this season, the OHSAA has partnered with Joe Eitel for updates to the computer points and team schedules. All of the information can be accessed by visiting The first Associated Press polls of the season will be released on Monday, September 11. The OHSAA website tracks each week s polls on their football page. PLAYING TOO CLOSE Three close games into the season for the Solon Comets have given the team two close wins and a close loss. As the fourth game closes in, now is the time to work towards separation among conference foes and Region 1 powers. At this point in the season a year ago, the Comets found themselves in the exact same position they are in now with a 2-1 record. We are all aware of the finish that 2016 squad made and now this group is faced with an opportunity to work toward the same results. We have a lot of improvements that will be made as we work towards our matchup with Elyria on Friday night, said Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide. We will face a lot of great athletes this week and we need to be ready to take Solon Football on the road. 6 HEAD COMET PAGE 6 Entering his fifteenth year as head football coach at Solon High School, Jim McQuaide has posted a stellar record of McQuaide began his career as an assistant coach at Warren John F. Kennedy High School, Mayfield High School, and St. Edward High School. His head coaching career began in 1989 in Louisville, Ohio at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The 1990 season started Coach McQuaide s tenure at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio. McQuaide traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1999 to become the head coach of the LaSalle Lancers through the 2002 season. In 2003, Jim McQuaide was named head football coach at Solon High School. To date, McQuaide has led the Comets to 8 league titles and 12 playoff appearances. Under McQuaide, the Comets have protected their home turf by accomplishing a record at Stewart Field. McQuaide has been named Western Reserve Conference Coach of the Year three times. He was named to the staff of the 2004 Ohio Big 33 All-Star squad and has received the Cleveland Browns Coach of the Week honors four times throughout his tenure at Solon. He was featured in Cleveland Magazine in 1994 as one of Northeast Ohio s Top Coaches. His teams have been featured as Team of the Week many times throughout his career. The Ohio High School Athletic Association honored Coach McQuaide in 2009 with their Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award. 2009, 2010, and 2011 saw McQuaide as NOC Valley Division Coach of the Year. In September of 2012, Coach McQuaide was inducted into the Warren, Ohio Sports Hall of Fame. Also in 2012, he was selected for induction into the John F. Kennedy High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Most recently in 2015, Jim was named Greater Cleveland Conference Coach of the Year and Cuyahoga County Coaches Association Coach of the Year, which is an honor he was also given in Coach McQuaide, along with his staff and players, won his 100th career game as head coach at Solon High School on September 26, 2014, by defeating Valley Forge, October 17, 2008, was the day McQuaide captured his 50th win at Solon and that was against Medina by a score of Solon s 2010 playoff win over Austintown Fitch gave Coach McQuaide his 150th career victory.
