The regional alignment in Division I will now be the same as Divisions II-VII, in that, each division is split into four regions, and the top eight teams in each region will advance to the post season. OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg commented that moving to four regions in Division I is a great decision. First and foremost, it cuts down significantly on travel, especially in the first round. It also allows Division I to go back to having a true regional championship game in the third round, followed by the state semifinals. In 2013, the OHSAA created an additional football division and put the largest 72 schools in Ohio into Division I, but only created two regions in the division. 4 IT KEEPS GOING Thomas Wilks was the last man to score in Solon s first game against Aurora and he was the first to score in their second game of the year, last Friday night T. Wilks against Twinsburg. Wilks, a 175 pound Junior, had a career night against the Tigers and Solon was able to capture their second win of the season. He finished D. Parker with 126 rushing yards and three touchdowns, including a 26 yard score in the second quarter. Jake McCurry and Devon Brown also had touchdowns in S. Bubonics the first half. McCurry caught a 26 yard pass from Quarterback Joe Bubonics and Brown had a 21 yard rush with three minutes to go before the half. Defensively, A. Baek the Comets had tackles from 30 players with Matt Brown and Da Veon Parker leading the unit with four tackles each in the game. With a 36-0 lead at the half, Head Coach Jim McQuaide was able to give some Friday night experience to other players. Highlighting the second half was Sam Bubonics 76 yard touchdown catch from Joe Cartellone. Both Andy Baek and Brett Shannon were perfect for the Comets on extra point against Twinsburg and Joe Bubonics is now two for two on two point conversions after his three yard rush in the first COMETS BRIEFLY IN 2015 OFFENSE Yards Rushing/Game: Yards Rushing/Att.: 3.6 Passing Yards/Game: Passing Yards/Att./Comp.: 2438/325/184 Total Net Yards/Game: Total Net Yards/Att.: 5.5 Points/Game: DEFENSE: Yards Rushing/Game: Passing Yards/Game: Total Net Yards/Game: Total Net Yards/Att.: 4.9 Points/Game: 16.8 Interceptions/Game: 1.3 COMETS BRIEFLY IN 2016 OFFENSE Yards Rushing/Game: Yards Rushing/Att.: 4.5 Passing Yards/Game: Passing Yards/Att./Comp.: 433/36/23 Total Net Yards/Game: 346 Total Net Yards/Att.: 7.4 Points/Game: 39.5 DEFENSE: Yards Rushing/Game: 109 Passing Yards/Game: 106 Total Net Yards/Game: 215 Total Net Yards/Att.: 4.1 Points/Game: 6.5 Interceptions/Game: 0 LAST GAME REPORT September 2, 2016 Stewart Field Solon, Ohio Final Twinsburg Solon Team Stats TWB SLN 1st Downs Yards Rushing Yards Passing Total Yards Passing C/A 7/15 11/19 Solon Statistical Leaders Passing: J. Friday night the Comets will take on Stow and then Saturday night the Marching Band will present their 10th annual Band Bash. Joining the Comet Marchers are bands from numerous local schools in a show that you are guaranteed to enjoy. Get your tickets early by visiting JOINING THE RANKS Former Solon assistant coach Thom McDaniels was inducted into the Warren, Ohio Sports Hall of Fame this past Saturday. McDaniels coaching accomplishments in high school football, most especially at Warren G. Harding, secured him a spot in this prestigious Hall of Fame. Joining the likes of Paul Warfield, Dennis Zolciak, John Gillen, Tony Napolet, Ed Klobovis, and Solon Head Coach Jim McQuaide, McDaniels is now included with Warren, Ohio s best in sports. Coach McD s list of accomplishments ranks as high as any in the state of Ohio. He began his coaching career in Orville, where he was an assistant for the Red Riders for five seasons. He made stops as an assistant at Mansfield Madison and Canton McKinley High Schools before becoming the head coach at Canton McKinley and leading the Bulldogs to the state and national championships in Following his stint with the Bulldogs, Coach McD became the head Raider at Warren G. Harding High School. (continued on page 5)
5 PAGE 5 JOINING THE RANKS (continued from page 4) Under Thom s leadership at Harding, the Raiders were from In 2002, they played for a state title and came up short against Cincinnati Elder. Following his stint at Harding, Thom went on to coach at Massillon Jackson High School and then became an assistant coach at Solon. Thom led Solon s offense as coordinator in 2009 and In both seasons the Comets finished the regular season with an undefeated record and advanced to the Division I, Region I finals. Congratulations to Coach McDaniels on an outstanding career and this well deserved honor. ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY The old adage, If you want to be the best, you ve got to beat the best, rings true for the Solon Comets as they prepare for their Week Three matchup against Stow. The Bulldogs, a team who a year ago went 10-0 in the regular season, won the Suburban League, and claimed a spot in the Division I state semifinals, returned a tremendous amount of experience to begin this season. They are playing like it too, having put up 56 points in each of their games so far. Part of their 2015 run included a meeting with Solon. That game, in the second round of the playoffs, saw Solon s season end when Stow outscored the Comets 21-9 in the second half. Opportunities like this, to play two games and then have a rematch against a team that ruined your playoff hopes, do not come around very often. When they do come, you better be ready, and that will drive the focus for Head Coach Jim McQuaide and his team this week. Big games like this, that s why you do what we do, said Coach McQuaide. Stow outplayed us in that playoff game last year and now we have a chance to see if we have improved in the winter and in these last two games. We give our fans a lot of credit for their support last week against Twinsburg and we look forward to that support this week. MEDIA MEMBERS/AVAILABILITY Members of the media are welcomed and encouraged to cover football games at Solon High School s Stewart Field.
