3 METRO SERIES WIN: Elena Popkey scored a team-high 18 points with five rebounds and three assists to lead Oakland over rival University of Detroit Mercy at Calihan Hall (Jan. 23). With the win, the Golden Grizzlies took a commanding 11-1 lead over UDM in the Metro Series standing driven by Trinity Transportation. Olivia Nash and Sinclair Russell each had 16 points with Russell hitting a clutch 3-pointer with only 57 seconds remaining which was just her second on the season. Popkey and Taylor Gleason followed with a pair of free throws each to seal the game. JONES NAMED HL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: For the third time this season, Taylor Jones was named Horizon League Freshman of the Week, announced the league office on Monday. Jones averaged 18 ppg, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals while hitting 20- of-22 (90.9%) from the free throw line over a two-game span. She scored a team-high 21 points to lead Oakland over UIC to win its fifth straight game (Jan. 7). Jones also made a career-high 11-of- 12 free throws scoring 15 points at Valparaiso (Jan. 9). GLEASON RECORDS FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Taylor Gleason posted a career-high in points (15) and assists (10) for her first career double-double to lead the Oakland women s basketball team (10-4, 2-1) to a win at UIC (1/7) FIVE-GAME WIN STREAK: The Golden Grizzlies tallied a fivegame win streak from 12/19-1/9 which is the best since the team which also won a season-high five consecutive games. LEAGUE HONORS CLEAN SWEEP: For their efforts in Oakland s win over IPFW (Dec. 22), Olivia Nash named was Horizon League Player of the Week for the first time this season after posting her third double-double of the season with a season-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Jones set career-highs in points (25), free throws made (9), assists (4), blocks (1) and minutes played (32) and was also named HL Freshman of the Week for the second time (Dec. 28). STRONG NON-CONFERENCE START: With the win at Vermont, the Golden Grizzlies concluded the non-conference regular season with a 8-3 record which tied the and teams for the best non-conference winning percentage (72.7%) to begin a season in the Division I era. MAKING THE GRADE: In the 2015 fall semester, 12-of-15 members of the women s basketball team posted a 3.00 GPA or better. IN GOOD HANDS WITH POPKEY: For the second consecutive year, Popkey has been nominated to 2016 Allstate Good Works Teams, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Allstate Insurance Company announced (Dec. 2). This distinguished award shines a spotlight on a select group of student-athletes who have shown dedication to service in their communities. GLEASON MAKES SEASON DEBUT: Illinois transfer Taylor Gleason played in her first game against YSU after being granted eligibility by the NCAA. The Grand Blanc native finished with 13 points, four assists and three rebounds. MAKING A DIFFERENCE: The women s basketball team added Sofia Floros as an honorary team member in conjunction with Draft Day and Team IMPACT (Nov. 24). Starting this season, Floros will participate in team activities such as practice, coaching, shoot around and game day operations. Team IMPACT is national organization, based in Boston, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. Team IMPACT children are drafted onto college athletic teams, local to where they live, and to the greatest extent possible, become a member of the team from Draft Day through to Graduation. Nola Anderson led the team hitting 6-for-9 at a 66.7% clip while Jones shot 62.5% (5-for-8). Dodd has the most attempts going 8-for-17 (47.1). NASH JOINS 1,000 POINT CLUB: Oilvia Nash became the 27th player in program history to surpass 1,000 points in the season opener on Friday in front of Oakland s third largest home crowd. Nash finished with nine points and nine rebounds going went 4-for-7 from the floor in 21 minutes of action. OFFENSIVE SCORING RECORD: Oakland scored a singlegame school record 123 points the opener versus NAIA UM- Dearborn (Nov. 13) making a record 51 field goals while shooting 61.4 percent from the field. The followed with a 87 point effort against CMU (11/15). Last season Oakland averaged 68.4 points per game and finished fifth in the Horizon League, despite shooting a league-low 37.6 percent. JONES NAMED HORIZON LEAGUE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Taylor Jones was named Horizon League Freshman of the Week (Nov. 16) scoring 23 points, seven rebounds, and five steals off the bench, including 21 points in the second half, in the Golden Grizzlies season-opening win over UM-Dearborn (Nov. 13). She followed with another 23 points and steal against Central Michigan (Nov. 15) totaling 18-of-24 shots from the field going 5-for-8 from 3-point range. IMMEDIATE IMPACT: Oakland had two newcomers reach double figures in their first-ever game for the Golden Grizzlies. Junior college transfer Nicole Dodd went 4-for-10 from long range and finished with 12 points, while freshman Taylor Jones scored a game-high 23 points on 10-for-15 shooting. 1,000 POINT DUO: Olivia Nash and Elena Popkey became the first pair of teammates to surpass 1,000 points in over a decade when Jayme Wilson and Anne Hafeli accomplished that feat in OAKLAND PICKED FIFTH HORIZON LEAGUE PRESEASON POLL: Oakland received 162 points and was picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League Preseason Poll, announced by the league office on Monday (Nov. 9). Popkey ranked second on the team last season by scoring 12.2 points per game, and finished 71st in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio. 7 Head Coach Jeff Tungate Jeff Tungate was named the head coach for the women s basketball team on July 16, He has spent the previous six seasons as the associate head coach for the men s basketball program and is going into his ninth season overall with the Golden Grizzlies. In 2014, Tungate received the inaugural Oakland Athletics Coach of the Year award. In his first season at the helm, Tungate led the Golden Grizzlies to its first non-losing season in league play since OU finished the season with a 8-8 record in its inaugural season in the Horizon League. He also implemented a new offense that averaged the most points per game since and the most total points in five seasons. He coached the first-ever All-Horizon League performers in Bethany Watterworth (2nd team) and Kim Bee (All-defensive). He earned his first career victory as a Division I head coach on Nov. 27, 2013, defeating Niagara In his second season, Tungate once again finished sixth in the 12th-ranked conference in the NCAA. He also coached back-to-back All-Horizon League defensive team selections as Sinclair Russell was named as an honoree after leading the league in blocks. Since taking over, the Golden Grizzlies have scored the most points over a twoyear span since the and seasons. Tungate led Oakland to a win over Green Bay on the road on Feb. 4, becoming only the sixth Horizon League team to defeat the Phoenix at home in league play in 16 years. Tungate began his career as Assistant Girl s Basketball Coach at Clarkston High School followed by one season as Assistant Women s Basketball Coach at Oakland Community College working for Oakland Hall of Honor member Ann Serra. He spent seven seasons overall with the men s basketball program, six as associate head coach. The Golden Grizzlies experienced unmatched success, making three NCAA tournaments and winning five Summit League championships during his tenure. In 2010, Tungate was an honorable mention selection by CollegeInsider.com for the top 25 mid-major assistant coaches. Over the course of his seven years with the men s program, Tungate worked with six players that played professional basketball, including OU s first-ever NBA Draft Pick Keith Benson, taken 48th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in Prior to his return to Oakland, Tungate spent two seasons as the associate head coach at IPFW under current Michigan State assistant coach Dane Fife from , helping the Mastodons to the best season in program history at that time. Tungate worked previously at OU during the season that saw the men s team win The Summit League tournament as the No. 7 seed and advanced to their first NCAA tournament since becoming eligible for Division I postseason play in The Golden Grizzlies won the opening round game over Alabama A&M, 79-69, before losing to eventual national champion and top-seed North Carolina, Tungate spent five seasons as head coach of Lincoln Memorial University (Division II) located in Harrogate, Tenn., from He led the Railsplitters to their best finish in the conference tournament and tied for a program-best 19 wins since moving up to Division II. He also tutored two Gulf South Conference Players of the Year and had a player make all-conference first team in four out of his five years at the helm.
