What a year in basketball 2012 has been. Our Senior Women had a sensational year nearly winning this year s NWBU Title. We were just pipped at the post by Devonport not without its own controversy. Our Men were knocked out in the Preliminary Final also to Devonport by a team that were much hungrier than ourselves. As players we all ponder on what could have been. It is important we continue to set high expectations for ourselves & strive hard for betterment of the club At Wynyard we have a culture of hard work gets its reward. At Wynyard we set a standard of leadership & at Wynyard we differentiate ourselves by challenging ourselves by stepping outside the comfort zone. As President I am extremely proud of what both teams have achieved I thank both Coaches David Russell & Sam Armstrong, for their commitment to season For the players I ask you to go away & come to preseason remembering the feeling you had in July. For the Volunteers & Committee members, I thank you so much for your assistance with the daily running of the club. It can be humbling to watch people just get in & get things done. I have been extremely pleased with the people we have on board at this level. We have strong interest for assistance at our club again next year but as the saying goes Many hands make light work! couldn t be more true. For our terrific sponsors On behalf of all of our Club thank you so much for what has been a record year in sponsorship & revenue. Be assured the money raised will be spent responsibly; we have clear guidelines on how our money will be spent moving forward. We understand that we are encroaching on some difficult times for some industries & wish you the best for the remainder of a reasonably young financial year. We appreciate your commitment & hope you can jump on-board for Season Our commitment to sponsorship and the Naming Rights, Gold, Silver & Bronze Sponsorships will be looking to increase our offerings. We hope you enjoy the night & I look forward to seeing you all for a drink. Please review all of our sponsors in this newsletter & shop & spend money there please your support of them is so important to our club! So what s the future of our club? Well it s going to be Junior Development & spread the word that Wynyard Basketball is doing exactly that. First draft of 2013 budget has provided significant investment in JD. We hope to have more skilled, experienced and trained coaching staff for our inter-town roster. We will continue to participate strongly in State & Regional Tournaments and investing in equipment to make better basketballers. We are also working on providing a part-time role as a Junior Development Officer if we can get the funding. We now have a live website where people can buy merchandise, season tickets at reduced prices, registration of players & general communication from our club. We are looking at opportunities to shop online through to our sponsor websites. We will be working with our Council to try & upgrade our facilities. So continue to expect changes at our Club, we are growing & we want you onboard to help us prosper. In closing, thank you & your families for all your support this year: to the Club & to me personally as 1 st year President. Enjoy the night & please make yourself open for introduction to our entire Club. Drive safely & enjoy your night It s a night for YOU! Deepest Thanks & Kind Regards Michael Rowlands, President. 3
4 Wynyard Wildwomen Coaches Report After being appointed Women s coach for 2012 I was looking forward to the new season after our 4th placing in With most of our young side continuing on this year with another year of experience under their belt things were looking exciting. This year we were without Veronica Wright (yr off), Shantrell Moss (USA), Jemma Dick (retirement), Laura Sullivan (travelling) and Clair Jones (injured). We introduced 8 new players to our squad, Kylie McCauley (Hobart), Danielle Ewington (Somerset), Talissa Wilson, Chloe Gillett, Lashai Howard (Burnie), Sophie Townsend, Ellyse Gamble, Bailey Groenewege (Wyn Juniors), as well as the return of Briana Hutton after her early exit last season due to her and Garth s 2nd child s arrival. With so many new players of different size I had a challenge to find new structures that suited our individual talents as well as our new teams strengths at both ends of the court to which our ladies worked very hard on the court in practise to work as one unit where everyone was on the same page. But for this to work even better we also had to gel as a group off the court being such a new bunch. So throughout the year we had several gatherings so the ladies could get to know each other off the court as well as on, hopefully from a coach s point of view to get them to play with passion for each other. Our season although getting results on the court we also had our fair share of injuries, resulting in players missing games as well as trainings. Players were unable to train due to work commitments and sickness made it hard at times to get to the standard we were after on game nights. By far our biggest disappointment was injury to Talissa at a time in which she was showing us all how well she can play at senior level. To her credit she has showed great resolve and maturity to deal with everything she has gone through still with a smile upon her face. Finishing the home and away roster games with a 19-2 record we were quite satisfied to hat we had achieved to this point. Unfortunately things didn t fall our way when it most counted in that we dropped the most important game of the year by 1 point. I would like to thank Robyn Edwards for once again living beyond expectations for what she does for our team. Rebecca Dick for coming in late to add coaching strength to our team for the final series. Thanks to all our sponsors and supporters for the support throughout the year, to everyone that made the games happen. Hopefully the loss urges the girls to have the want, passion and pride to work even harder to get the ultimate prize. Accept the CHALLENGE, get on board for the ride, cant come soon enough. While the end result for 2012 was below our expectations and standards I thank every one of my players for their contribution to our program. Some would say we had an ok year finishing second and making the preliminary final but I know my team was gutted with the result. This result raised such questions as has the men s program finally turned a corner? Are we not as good as we use to be? Has complacency crept in? Are we getting to old? I answer these questions with the following.. Most people have the will to win, few have the will to prepare to win, one of my favourite quotes from Bobby Knight. Gut wrenching 400m runs followed by hills and agility ladder work, time trials through Shorewell park reserve, tractor tyre pulling, team bootcamp sessions and team beach work sessions like no other. This preseason showed me I had a group of guys committed to I m sure most of the guys would look back and think it was the hardest preseason they had ever undertaken. At the forefront throughout the preseason was our oldest player. Standards were set and everyone had an idea of what level was acceptable. The one thing I love about the men s program is the culture that surrounds the group, everyone knows what is expected. My focuses as a coach lied know further than the next challenge at hand. Very cliché but I coach one week at a time and our preparation always followed suit. Trainings were always competitive and everyone challenged everyone on a consistent basis. Everyone bought in to our system and all you want as a coach is a group of players that are coachable and believe in what you are trying to put in place. The team that hit the floor every week was a good blend of youth and experience highlighted by the most talented 15 year old in the state in Kyle Clark through to league MVP Ben Armstrong who I feel had one of his best seasons in the past 3 to 4 years. I am proud that our men s team have been able to retain our local players and that we can still call ourselves an all local product. I would like to thank my experienced players Bj, Scotty, Lee, Rowly and Stu Turner for challenging me as a coach and as a player and leading the way both on game nights and at practice to the younger members of our team. I would also like to thank Ethan Johnstone Nick Taylor, Kyle Clark, Stuart Lee and Sam Douglas for allowing themselves to be coached and mentored by myself and our senior players. They are all quality young men with bright futures and are always welcome in our program. Thank you finally to Trout, Pete Gaff and Jeff Taylor for their continued support of our men s team and these three guys are just as much part of the team as the players has challenged me as a coach and I understand and accept results lay squarely on my shoulders. As a team we now have fresh challenges ahead and a common goal of once again establishing our team as the best in the NWBU. In regards to questions raised by other parties I would say go ahead ask questions, make statements but write the Wynyard s men program off at your own peril!! BRING ON Sam Armstrong 5
