Bradley is 12-1 in the last 13 regular-season matchups and owns a six-game home win streak vs. the Salukis. Last time out Evansville limited Bradley to 32.1 percent shooting in the second half and opened the second period with a 14-4 spurt to blow open what was a seven-point game at break. The Purple Aces pushed the lead to as many as 23 points en route to the victory. Michelle Young was the only Bradley player to score in double figures, finishing with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Senior day Saturday s game against Southern Illinois will mark the final home games for Bradley seniors Kelsey Budd, Kelly Frings, Catie O Leary and Alyson Spinas-Valainis and the group will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony. Featuring four of the team s top five scorers this season, the group has combined for 56.3 percent of the team s scoring, 56.7 percent of the squad s rebounding, 67.1 percent of BU s assists, 60 percent of the blocks and 54 percent of the season total for steals. ending at home Bradley will wrap up the regular-season schedule at home for the seventh time in eight seasons and 10 of the last 13 overall. The Braves finished the regular season at home just seven of the first 17 years of conference membership. Bradley is 6-11 all-time when wrapping up the conference schedule at home, but 3-2 in the last five when closing the regular-season slate at home and 4-3 in the last seven. The Braves will face Southern Illinois in the final game of the regular season for the first time since finishing the schedule at SIU and Saturday s game will mark the first time the Salukis have been Bradley s final home opponent of the year since Rare Air Senior Catie O Leary pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds Thursday against Evansville to give her a career-best 202 rebounds this season. O Leary reached elite company with her 200th rebound of the season as she joined Bradley Hall of Fame member Val Wancket as the only players in school history to have 200 points, 200 rebounds and 50 assists in at least two seasons. 4 The only player in school history to reach those numbers in back-to-back seasons, O Leary needs 13 points to become the first player since Carrie Coffman in to collect 300 points, 200 rebounds and 50 assists in a season. O Leary is the seventh player in program history with 900 career points, 550 rebounds and 175 assists. well rounded Senior guard Kelsey Budd dished out her 100th assist of the season Thursday against Evansville and needs eight points and three rebounds to become the sixth individual in program history to own a season with 300 points, 100 rebounds, 100 assists and 40 or more steals. Budd would be the first player to reach those numbers since Raisa Taylor in and just the third Brave to amass those totals in the same season in the last 20 years. close calls Bradley ended a 10-game road losing streak in the series with Illinois State with last week s victory at Redbird Arena to complete the first season series sweep by the Braves since In both games against the I-74 rival, Bradley had to make a defensive stop in the final 30 seconds to secure the victory and last week s game was a school season-record 12th contest decided by five points or less this year for the Braves. Bradley is 6-6 in games decided by six points or less, one short of matching the school record of seven such victories in those contests set during the season. Three of the last five and four of the last seven games at Renaissance Coliseum have had a final margin of five points or fewer. finding her niche Freshman Leti Lerma came up big in the road victory at I-74 rival Illinois State last week, scoring a seasonhigh 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting in addition to collecting six boards, one assist, two blocks and a steal. Lerma entered the game 1-for-11 from beyond the arc on the year, but connected on her first three shots from three-point range. She scored six of Bradley s final seven points and came up with a steal with three seconds left to help secure the victory. Lerma has averaged 6.7 rebounds in the MVC play and has stepped up her play of late to average 8.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in the last six contests. Lerma s 126 rebounds this season are the most by a Bradley freshman since Sonya Harris corralled 137 boards as a frosh in Lerma needs 16 rebounds to push her season total among the top 10 marks by a Bradley freshman. end of the road Bradley closed out the road portion of the schedule Sunday at Indiana State, playing the final regular-season road game at the Hulman Center for the fourth time in the last eight years. Indiana State played at Bradley in the final home game for the Braves in both 2013 and Bradley has faced the Sycamores in either the final road game or final home game of the season in five of the last six years and six of the last eight seasons overall. elite company Senior Kelsey Budd moved into 18th on Bradley s career scoring list with her team-high 19 points against Indiana State, but joined an even more elite group with her 325th career assist. Budd became just the third individual in program history with 900 points, 325 assists, 150 steals and 300 career rebounds. She joins Bradley Hall of Fame members Heather Best and Val Wancket as the only individuals to reach those numbers. Budd needs three assists to move into seventh in career assists at Bradley. charity stripe With a minimum of two games remaining, Bradley has a chance to break the school season record for made free throws. The Braves have made a league-high 470 free throws, which is the fifth best season total in school history. Bradley is averaging a league-high 16.8 makes from the charity stripe and needs to make just 15.0 per contest through the first game of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament to break the school season record of 499 free throws made during the season (34 games). forever young Junior Michelle Young has scored a team-high 391 points this season (14.0 per game) and boasts the highest season point total for a Bradley player prior to their senior year since Sara Bailey netted 487 points as a junior in Bailey is the only Bradley player in the last 20 years to score 400 points in a season prior to their senior season. Young would need to average 4.5 points per game through the first game of the MVC Tournament to become the eighth junior in school history to score 400 points and would be the ninth player in school history to own a 400-point season prior to their senior year. off the bench Senior Alyson Spinas-Valainis recently had back-toback games with a career-high 16 points off the bench and had a streak of five consecutive games in double figures snapped Sunday at Indiana State. Her 16 points off the bench against Drake and Northern Iowa matched the highest point total by a Bradley reserve this season. Spinas Valainis has averaged 8.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 48 percent from the field off the bench this season; compared to 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per outing while shooting 45 percent in her 13 starts. In 13 home games, she has shot 51 percent from the field and collected 10.7 points and 5.5 boards per outing. Points In The Paint Opponent BU Opp. Dif. 5 success in the valley Senior Alyson Spinas-Valainis has stepped up her play in the Missouri Valley Conference action, averaging 9.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game against Valley opponents, after posting averages of 7.9 points and 4.9 boards per outing in non-conference play. She has been Bradley s leading scorer over the last seven games, averaging 11.0 points per tilt on 54.2 percent (26-for-48) shooting during that seven-game stretch. balanced attack The only team in the Missouri Valley Conference to have four players scoring in double figures, Bradley has six individuals with 200 or more points in a season for the first time since Four Bradley players have already scored 250 or more points this season. With at least two games remaining, sophomore Fantasia Vine senior Alyson Spinas-Valainis both have a chance to reach the 250-point mark, which would give the Braves six individuals with 250 or more points in the same season for the first time in program history. The last Bradley squad to have four players average in double figures was The only team in school history to have six individuals score 7.5 points per game or more was the team. getting defensive Bradley turned in its best defensive outing of the year to grind out the win against Loyola (Feb. 15) and the Braves have held the last nine opponents to an average of 70.6 points per game. Prior to that, Bradley had been surrendering a league-high 85.9 points per contest. The 49 points scored by Loyola was the lowest point total for a BU opponent since Southern Illinois managed just 42 points on Feb. 2, 2013 and the 32.2 percent shooting by Loyola was the lowest for a Bradley foe since the Salukis shot 29.7 percent in that same game. The 103 combined point total marked the lowest scoring game in Renaissance Coliseum history. winning ugly One game removed from having six players score in double figures at Missouri State (Feb. 9), Bradley matched its lowest scoring output of the season and shot a season-low 29.2 percent from the field against Loyola (Feb. 15). Despite the offensive struggles, Bradley pulled out a win against the Ramblers, marking the lowest field goal percentage in a victory since at least the season and possibly in program history. Full box scores prior to the season are unavailable in the Bradley archives. The Braves won when scoring 55 points or less for the first time since a victory at Northern Illinois on Nov. 23, 2011 and had less than 55 in a win against a conference team for the first time since a home victory against Creighton on Feb. 23, on the rebound Freshman Leti Lerma has averaged 6.7 rebounds in Missouri Valley Conference play and 7.1 boards per game in the last 14 outings, but her 19 rebounds against Loyola (Feb. 15) is one for the record book. Lerma broke the Renaissance Coliseum single-game record with 19 boards and her total against the Ramblers is tied for the eighth-best single game total in school history. The 19 rebounds were the most by a Bradley player since Latasha Hollingshed had 20 rebounds at Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Dec. 1, 2010 and were the most by a Brave in a home game since Amy Fuller corralled 19 boards against Missouri on Nov. 23, saturday in the park The victory against Loyola (Feb. 15) marked the first Saturday home game of the season for the Braves and is just one of two Saturday home contests on the schedule this year. Bradley has played more Sunday home games this season (5) than they had in the previous three years combined (2). The Feb. 15 game against Loyola was the 50th game played at Renaissance Coliseum and the 16th Saturday contest. The Braves are 12-4 (.750) when playing on Saturday at Renaissance Coliseum, having won more games on Saturday s than games played on any other day of the week. home cooking Senior Kelsey Budd has had a great deal of success in her games at Renaissance Coliseum this season, scoring in double figures in seven of 10 home games at Renaissance Coliseum. In 10 games at Renaissance Coliseum, Budd is shooting 44 percent from the field and averaging 13.1 points, 4.3 assists and 2.2 steals per game this season; compared to 10.2 points, 3.4 assists 1.2 steals per game on the road. Fellow senior Alyson Spinas-Valainis has averaged 6.4 points and 5.0 rebounds on 39 percent shooting away from home, but is scoring 10.7 points per game on 50 percent shooting and snagging 5.4 boards per game in 13 home contests. spreading it around After not having a player score in double figures in the loss at Wichita State (Feb. 7), Bradley had six players score 10 or more points in the setback at Missouri State (Feb. 9). The Braves had six players score in double digits for the first time since last season s home game against Southern Illinois (2/2/13), but it marked just the third time since the season six BU players had 10+ points in the same game. Last year s performance against SIU ended a span of 597 games without six players reaching double figures in the same game, but now it has happened twice in a little over a year. The game against Missouri State marked the first time six Braves had 10 or more points in a road game since Feb. 7, 1985 at Eastern Illinois and it was the ninth game in school history in which six BU players scored in double figures. O Leary is a career 79.8 percent free throw shooter and is fifth in career free throw percentage on The Hilltop.
