Always In Stitches is joining local quilt shops worldwide for the 2016 Pantie Raid, a drive to collect new, packaged panties, PJs and socks for women s shelters. Donations dropped off at the Noblesville, quilt, fabric and yarn shop, 1808 E. Conner St., will be given to Alternatives, Inc., in Anderson, which provides emergency and transitional housing as well as supportive services for area victims of domestic violence and their children. When domestic violence victims flee, they usually have no time to pack, said Mary Jo Lee, CEO of Alternatives, which served 623 victims in They need everything but particularly basic essentials to start their healing and new lives. Indiana has 29 domestic violence shelters. Each is assigned a service area by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. Alternatives is the primary shelter for Hamilton, Hancock, Henry. Madison and Tipton counties and the overflow shelter for Marion County. It has been offering shelter since Always In Stitches opened as a place for women to hang out and feel safe, explained Capi Saxton, shop manager. The shop s track record of giving back to the community is one reason Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Sampler magazine named the shop one of the 10 best in North America in mid Being part of the Pantie Raid and partnering with Alternatives fits our mission well. In appreciation of donors generosity, Always In Stitches will give a free fat quarter of fabric, a $3.99 value, for each package donated now through Jan. 23 in the shop. MEALS ON WHEELS Fred Swift takes a look at this worthwhile charity in his County Line column, today on Page 2. About that lottery... By JANET HART LEONARD Yes, the sun came out on Wednesday's tomorrow. It was Thursday morning and I was on my way into work. I was smiling. The sun on the crest of Tuesday's snow fall was still giving visions of Powerball winnings to those of us who had bought a ticket, hoping to become a billionaire. I didn't actually buy a ticket but I donated my five dollars to the company lottery pool. I did not want to be left out if there was a "party". I entertained the thoughts of what I would do if I won all that money. I kept thinking about all the mortgages of family and friends that I would pay off. I thought about starting an "Anonymous Fund " where I would find families that were struggling and surprise them with checks to make their life easier. I thought about how the money would affect my lifestyle. Would I move from my Always in Stitches employees Kathy Zook (left) and Ros Demaree show off some fabric that s perfect to make a pair of pajamas with. You don t have to stitch pajamas, though, to donate to the 2016 Pantie Raid, which is taking place now through Jan. 23. FYI: A fat quarter is a quarter yard of fabric that s cut 18-by-22-inches, which is more ideal for quilters to use to make strips and small pieces than a traditional quarteryard cut. Meals on Wheels is a simple way to do volunteer work By FRED SWIFT A couple of months ago I volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels. I'm now getting familiar with my route and the eight households where I take meals three or four times a month. That's not very taxing on my time and I figure it's serving a worthy purpose. The normal routine for me simply involves driving to the Carmel St. Vincent Hospital kitchen door, picking up two insulated bags containing the hot and cold meals, checking each bag to make sure all the right meals are there, then driving a pre-determined route and delivering the meals at each client's door. It takes about an hour by the time I return the bags. Of course, in different communities there are different preparation locations for picking up the meals. Hamilton County Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization funded by donations, community grants and fundraising efforts, but no state or federal monies. Revenues pay for the cost of the office and staff and food services. Meals on Wheels does charge recipients but only on their ability to pay. The meals, prepared in a healthcare facility kitchen, are not lavish, but are nutritious. Each weekday a noon lunch and an evening meal are sent to any elderly, disabled or confined county citizen who is unable to prepare his or her own meals. Residents who need the service (or a relative) either for short periods of time or for longer term, may contact the office at to learn the application process. In this county the organization has been around since 1975 when it was started by Mary Bray in Westfield with one client in need of meals. Beth Gehlhausen, involved in community service organizations for many years, is executive director. Meals on Wheels operates with a small staff from a storefront office in Noblesville's Western Plaza shopping center. Volunteer drivers who furnish their own transportation are always needed. Interested individuals may contact the office to learn how to become a driver. It's a pretty simple process and a good way to do a little volunteer work for the community. JANET From Page 1 little house on the alley? Probably not. I know it sounds crazy but I have lived in my 110 year old house since 1975 and I have never had the desire to move. My little yellow house on 12th Street is home. It's my place of comfort and refuge. I can't imagine ever clicking my ruby red slippers (if I had a pair) and wanting to be anywhere else. Thinking about having all that would be possible if I had that much money also gave way to many questions. Would it change me? Would it change the way people looked at me? Would I lose friends? Would I become stressed out by not taking care of every need that people brought to me? Would my life become more complicated? Would I be constantly having to make hard decisions? Whew. I was relieved there wasn't a "party". And so I continued to smile as I drove. No, I hadn't won the lottery but my life was good. I was content. Money cannot buy contentment. Money cannot buy peace of mind that I am loved. It sounds so corny to say but I have just about everything that I have ever dreamed of having. A little house to call home. A husband who loves me unconditionally. A family and bonus family that I can love by cooking them big family dinners. A job that I enjoy. I live in my hometown where people know my name when I am out and about. My love of writing is shared each week with the community that can relate to my thoughts. My brave editors allows me to say whatever I am thinking. (Brave men) I wouldn't say that I am lucky but I am blessed. And so I smile. Now I just need a pair of ruby red slippers. 3 News 3 Hamilton County under Travel Advisory A yellow level Travel Advisory has been issued for unincorporated roads in Hamilton County, effective Saturday morning until further notice, due to falling temperatures freezing the recent rains. This is the lowest level of local travel advisory and means that routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation. Individuals should use caution or avoid those areas. Unincorporated roads are those roads maintained by Hamilton County, usually roads outside cities and towns. The National Weather Service is forecasting that temperatures will continue to drop throughout the weekend and any remaining precipitation on the roadways may cause slick areas. Watch carefully as portions of what may appear to be dry pavement can quickly turn into icy patches. Elevated roads such as overpasses and bridges tend to freeze first. As a reminder with winter driving, reduce speeds, leave extra room between vehicles, make sure all windows are clear of snow and ice, turn on lights to increase visibility even during the day, and make sure to keep an emergency kit along with a fully charged cell phone handy. In case of a slide off or crash, contact Hamilton County Public Safety Communications at or for an emergency. Hot-shooting Noblesville beats Columbus North By RICHIE HALL Reporter Sports Editor After Friday's agonizing double overtime loss at Zionsville, Noblesville boys basketball coach Brian McCauley wanted to know how his team would respond back at The Mill against Columbus North on Saturday. McCauley got his answer, and it was the one he was looking for. The Millers used blistering 3-point shooting and solid defense to overwhelm the Bull Dogs While Columbus North kept things close in the first quarter, Noblesville sailed through the second quarter 21-5, putting the Millers ahead and giving them firm control. "So proud of our guys' character, the response that they showed from a really disappointing loss last night on the road, but to a good team," said McCauley. McCauley said the Millers came out focused Saturday morning, then came into the game with "a lot of energy this evening." The first period saw several lead changes, and three consecutive 3-pointers: John Kiser drained a long-range shot for Noblesville, Nathan Van Deventer answered for the Bull Dogs, and put the visitors ahead But Corby Mertens drained a 3 at the buzzer, and that gave the Millers a lead after one quarter. It was also a sign of things to come for Mertens. The buzzer-beater started a 9-0 run for Noblesville, which led before Columbus North finally scored again. But the Millers skipped off on a 10-0 run, which was capped by back-to-back 3s from Mertens. The half ended with another Miller, Nick Mills, scoring four tough points off a floater and a pair of free throws. Noblesville continued its hot-shooting ways in the second half. Mertens drained three more 3s; he had six downtown shots in total and wound up the leading scorer off the bench with 24 points. Max Flinchum also threw in a couple of 3s as well. "After every practice we're working on shots, driving kicks and stuff like that," said Mertens. "Just game-like shots, so we were prepared for that." In all, the Millers' efficiency won the day. Noblesville shot 55 percent from the field (22-of-40), a remarkable 69 percent from 3-point land (9-of-13), and did well at the free throw line too, making 9-of-11 attempts. The Millers' defense, meanwhile, held the Bull Dogs to 30 percent shooting, as they made 12 of 39 shots. Kiser scored 16 points, and was strong all through the scoreline with seven assists and five rebounds. Mertens pulled five boards as well. Flinchum wound up with 12 points. There were other stars as well. "So proud of Brandon Barthel," said McCauley. "His effort off the bench was awesome. He got on the offensive glass, he defended well, hit a short-corner shot, that was big." Noblesville is now 7-6 for the year. The Millers' next game is next Saturday, a trip to Logansport. Hamilton Heights trailed host Western Boone at halftime. The final two Lutz quarters were different. Heights outscored the Stars 11-5 in the third quarter and 18-8 in the fourth period while posting a victory. With Hunter Crist still injured, Ballenger couldn t find a third scorer on this night. Caymn Lutz and Sterling Weatherford combined for 35 of the Huskes 51 points. Lutz led the way with 18 points and Weatherford followed with 17. It wasn t an overall great shooting night for Heights.
