Despite entering the meet as a heavy underdog, the Tigers edged a talented squad from Southern California for the title by a margin as Buddy Blair, Glen Slats Hardin, Jack Torrance, Al Moreau and Matt Gordy each turned in All-America performances. This season marks the 75th anniversary of that victory that helped lay the foundation for one of the nation s elite programs in all of collegiate track and field. In fact, the Tigers and Lady Tigers have now combined to win 30 national championships in their storied histories. LSU TAKES THE NEXT STEP AT NCAA MIDEAST REGIONAL Following their outstanding performance at the SEC Outdoor Championships two weeks ago, the LSU track and field teams will take the next step in their quest toward the NCAA Outdoor Championships by traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend to compete in the 2008 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships. The two-day meet kicks off Friday morning at John McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas, and both the Tigers and Lady Tigers are looking to defend the team titles they won a year ago at the University of Missouri. The Mideast Region includes 78 Division I institutions that sponsor men s programs and 81 that sponsor women s programs. Live results from the meet can be found online by logging on to and daily recaps will be posted on the official website for LSU athletics at ABOUT THE NCAA REGIONALS The 2008 season marks the sixth year that the NCAA has sponsored the regional track and field championships as a means for its athletes to qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. There are four regional meets held across the country as other host sites include Florida State in the East, Nebraska in the Midwest and Cal State-Northridge in the West. All NCAA Regional meets will be held Friday and Saturday at those sites. The women captured team championships in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 to go along with a runner-up finish in The men are the two-time defending regional champions after taking home the team title in 2006 and 2007, while they have also never finished lower than third in the meet s five-year history. The Tigers and Lady Tigers have won a combined 18 individual and 13 relay titles all-time at the regional championships. Former LSU great Kelly Willie holds the top spot for most regional titles in school history with seven (2 individual, 5 relay), while former Lady Tiger standout Muna Lee holds the women s record with four regional titles (3 individual, 1 relay). LAST YEAR AT THE REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS En route to qualifying 24 athletes and four relay teams to the NCAA Championships, the Lady Tigers and Tigers scored 112 and 70 points, respectively, in sweeping team titles at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships a season ago. In fact, the squads have swept regional titles in each of the past two seasons. It marked the fourth time in five years that the women have won a regional championship, while the men won their second in the brief history of the meet. The Lady Tigers were led by regional champions Jessica Ohanaja (100 hurdles) and Nickiesha Wilson (400 hurdles), while the Tigers featured a pair of champions of their own in Trindon Holliday (100 meters) and Isa Phillips (400 hurdles). LSU also won relay titles in the men s 4x100 and both the women s 4x100 and 4x400 relays. LSU ATHLETES SWEEP SEC OUTDOOR RUNNER OF THE YEAR HONORS Seniors Richard Thompson and Kelly Baptiste have certainly proven to be two of the nation s premier sprinters during the 2008 season, and both cemented their place as the No. 1 sprinters in the SEC on Monday by sweeping SEC Male and Female Outdoor Runner of the Year honors. This marks the first time in his career that Thompson has been named the SEC Male Runner of the Year, while Baptiste has swept women s honors in 2008 after being named the SEC Female Indoor Runner of the Year in March. In addition, head coach Dennis Shaver was honored as the SEC Women s Outdoor Coach of the Year. TIGERS VAULT TO NO. 1, LADY TIGERS NO. 2 IN LATEST RANKING Thanks to a pair of outstanding performances at the SEC Outdoor Championships two weeks ago, the Tigers have taken over the No. 1 ranking in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 released May 22, while the Lady Tigers hold their position at No. 2 for the third straight week. This marks the third time this outdoor season that the Tigers have held the top spot in the power ranking as the squad moved up three spots from No. 4 where it stood prior to the SEC meet. Note: The updated power ranking scheduled for release on May 27 prior to the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships was not released prior to the printing of these notes. WOMEN TEAMS POINTS 1. 3 LADY TIGERS WIN BACK-TO-BACK SEC OUTDOOR TITLES With an SEC Indoor title already under their belt, the Lady Tigers continued their domination over the rest of the league by completing the sweep with the team title at the SEC Outdoor Championships on May 18. The LSU women ran away from the rest of the field with points over the course of the fourday meet at Hutsell-Rosen Track on the campus of Auburn University to successfully defend their SEC Outdoor title by 28.5 points over SEC runner-up Florida (129). With their dominating victory at the SEC Outdoor Championships, the Lady Tigers swept SEC Indoor and Outdoor titles in the same season for the first time since 1996 and captured back-to-back SEC Outdoor championships for the first time since The Lady Tigers have now won a total of 21 SEC championships in program history. TIGERS EARN SECOND STRAIGHT RUNNER-UP FINISH AT SEC MEET The Tigers nearly pulled off an impressive double with a team title of their own at the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships two weeks ago, but fell just short of the points scored by Arkansas to finish runner-up with 122 points for the meet. This marks the second straight season that the Tigers have earned a runner-up finish at the SEC Outdoor Championships after placing second at the meet in Tuscaloosa, Ala., a year ago. The squad also earned a runner-up finish to Arkansas at the SEC Indoor Championships back in March. THOMPSON BECOMES NCAA S FASTEST MAN AT SEC OUTDOORS LSU s Richard Thompson has quickly become one of the more dominant sprinters at the collegiate level, and he became the first LSU athlete since Byron Logan in 1998 and the first SEC athlete since Tyson Gay in 2004 to sweep 100-meter and 200-meter titles at the SEC Outdoor Championships on May 18. His winning time of 9.93 seconds in the final of the 100-meter dash is a new SEC record and the second-fastest time in the history of collegiate track and field behind the NCAA record of 9.92 set by UCLA s Ato Boldon at the NCAA Championships in Not only did Thompson dominate the competition in the finals of the 100-meter dash, but he also blew away the field in the 200-meter final at the SEC Championships with an NCAA leading and new personal best time of 20.23, which ranks No. 3 on LSU s all-time outdoor performance list. He enters the regional meet as the NCAA s fastest man in both events. LSU FEATURES NINE EVENT WINNERS AT SEC OUTDOOR MEET LSU featured nine event winners at the SEC Outdoor Championships as senior Richard Thompson led the way by sweeping sprint titles in the 100 and 200 meters. Fellow senior Kelly Baptiste added her first career 100-meter title on the women s side to mark the first time that one school has swept 100-meter titles since For the second straight year, LSU swept men s and women s titles in the 800 meters with both senior Elkana Kosgei and sophomore LaTavia Thomas following their SEC Indoor titles in March with outdoor titles on May 18. Junior Nickiesha Wilson won an SEC title of her own in the 100- meter hurdles. In addition, LSU won three of the four relay titles during the meet, including the men s 4x100 relay and both the women s 4x100 and 4x400 relays. LSU s nine event wins was the most of any school at the meet as Auburn finished second with six wins over the course of four day of competition. LSU SETS MEET RECORD WITH SIX TITLES AT PENN RELAYS The 114th running of the Penn Relays proved to be unlike any other for the LSU track and field teams as the squads wrapped up the competition on April 26 with a meet record six Championship of America titles during the three-day relay carnival. The Lady Tigers won four relay titles in the 4x100, 4x800, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays, while the Tigers added a pair of titles in the 4x100 and sprint medley relays. By winning six titles at this year s meet, LSU blew away the competition as Texas finished a distant second with three titles for the weekend. LSU s six Championship of America relay titles is a combined record for men s and women s teams at one university in one year at the Penn Relays, eclipsing the mark of five previously held by Villanova (1968, 1969, 1970, 1978) and LSU (2007). LADY TIGERS SET TWO RELAY RECORDS AT PENN It proved to be a record-setting weekend for the Lady Tigers at the 114th Penn Relays as the squad walked away from the track at historic Franklin Field with four Championship of America relay titles and two relay records to its credit. The Lady Tigers continued their domination in the 4x100-meter relay on April 25 by shattering their own meet record with the third-fastest time in the history of women s collegiate track and field at to win their 12th wagon wheel in the event all-time. Their effort crushed the previous meet record of that was set by LSU in After their record-setting performance in the 4x100, the Lady Tigers followed later in the afternoon by setting a new collegiate record of to win the shuttle hurdle relay, eclipsing the previous mark of set by Illinois in ACCOLADES NCAA Indoor Champions Kelly Baptiste 60 Meters LaTavia Thomas Richard Thompson 60 Meters Morris, Wilson, Thomas, Lawrence 4x400 Relay NCAA Indoor All-Americans Samantha Henry 60 Meters Trindon Holliday 60 Meters Elkana Kosgei Andrea Linton Long Jump Jessica Ohanaja 60 Hurdles Reuben Twijukye Nickiesha Wilson 60 Hurdles Hendry, Hayes, James, J. 6 LSU IN THE RANKINGS USTFCCCA Top 25 INDOOR Week Men Women Preseason 5 1 Jan Feb Feb Feb Feb March March Final 4 2 OUTDOOR Week Men Women Preseason 2 1 April April April April May May May TRINDON HOLLIDAY: WORLD S FASTEST FOOTBALL PLAYER THE MAN LSU s Trindon Holliday has made a name for himself both on the track and on the football field as he is one of the premier two-sport athletes in all of collegiate athletics. One of the nation s most electrifying running backs and return specialists, Holliday rushed for 381 yards and two touchdowns with a 6.9 yards per carry average to help lead the LSU football team to a national championship in He has also used his blazing speed to return a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns in the last two seasons, including a 98-yard return in LSU s victory over Ole Miss on Nov. 17. After his performance at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the case can be made that Holliday is in fact the fastest football player in the history of the sport. He became the fastest man in the history of LSU track and field when he recorded a then school-record time of seconds in the national semifinal of the 100-meter dash on June 6, THE CASE While we can only argue who might be the greatest football player in the history of the sport, there is no arguing who is the fastest. There have been a total of 71 men in history who have run a faster time in the 100-meter dash than Holliday s personal best time of It is known who they are, where they are from and when their times were recorded... and none played the game of football at the time of their achievement. There have been 11 collegiate athletes who have recorded a faster time in the 100 meters than Holliday, but none played college football in their collegiate careers. In addition, there have been no high school athletes with a faster time as the high school record is The bottom line is that no high school, college or professional football player has ever run faster than Trindon Holliday during their football career. No one faster than Holliday has ever been on a football roster, much less have played in a game. With this in mind, it is only fitting that Holliday be referred to as the fastest player in the history of football. THE CONTENDERS While there may be more accomplished two-sport athletes than Holliday in both football and track and field, there are none faster. Bullet Bob Hayes, who was one of the NFL s most electrifying wide receivers while playing for the Dallas Cowboys in the 1960s, won an Olympic gold medal in the 100- meter dash in the 1964 Olympic Games with a personal best time of Hayes also anchored the United States to a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay that same year. During his collegiate career at the University of Texas, Johnny Lam Jones also won a gold medal in the 4x100 relay at the 1976 Olympic Games. Jones later enjoyed a five-year career with the New York Jets after being drafted second overall by the club in the 1980 NFL Draft. Such football All-Americans as Willie Gault (Tennessee), Herschel Walker (Georgia), Deion Sanders (Florida State), Raghib Rocket Ismail (Notre Dame) and Bo Jackson (Auburn) were also standouts on the track during their collegiate careers. Below is a list of notable football players who are also considered among the fastest in the history of the sport along with their top 100-meter time and the year it was recorded. Athlete Top Time Year Trindon Holliday Bullet Bob Hayes Willie Gault Johnny Lam Jones Herschel Walker Jamaal Charles Deion Sanders Raghib Rocket Ismail C.J. Spiller Bo Jackson Renaldo Nehemiah 10.18w 1978 THE PRETENDERS Leonard Scott and John Capel played college football at Tennessee and Florida, respectively. Both tried and failed to make NFL rosters as free agents before pursuing professional careers in track and field. Capel s last year playing football was 1999 and Scott s was Their best collegiate 100- meter times were and 10.05, respectively. Capel s personal best time of 9.95 was recorded five years after giving up the game of football, while Scott s top time of 9.91 was clocked four years after his football career had ended.
