Seaman s Bryant Guillen Chasing MAKING history Senior Bryant Guillen has an opportunity to rewrite the Seaman Wrestling history book in regard to individual honors. The 160-pounder is on track to break the career wins record and is the first returning state champion for Seaman since the season (Kevin Miller). Bryant Guillen s Seaman Career Log Year Record Falls State Placing Freshman Fifth Sophomore Fifth Junior Champion TOTALS If his final season is anything like his previous three, Bryant Guillen will go down as the most accomplished wrestler in the fifty-two year history of the Seaman Wrestling program. That lofty statement is backed by compelling data. This season Guillen has the opportunity to reach several firsts in the history of the program; first two-time state champion, first four-time state medalist, first three-time Centennial League Champion, and first four-time first-team All-City selection. Additionally, Guillen should reach his hundredth career victory on opening weekend and will likely overtake Jason Puderbaugh as the Seaman Wrestling career wins record holder in early January. Puderbaugh, current Royal Valley head coach, has held the top spot at 115 victories since graduating in Guillen also has a realistic chance of reaching a rare one-hundredth career fall. He enters the season at sixty-nine; which is already the Seaman record by nine falls. Only fourteen Kansas high school wrestlers have earned one hundred or more career falls. A statistic that won t reach the record books, but deserves mention, is the fact that Guillen has never been pinned during his high school career. This is an accomplishment in itself for any wrestler who has competed in the varsity line-up since their freshman season and speaks to Bryant s competitive spirit. That competitiveness made an impact on the gridiron this fall in his role as the team s kicker and nose guard on one of the most successful football teams the Vikings have fielded in recent years. He has faced many highly regarded opponents in his career, but the biggest adversary may be the injuries that he has wrestled with. Guillen has yet to complete a season without being sidelined due to injuries ranging from nagging bumps and bruises to surgery. He is coming off an injury-free football season and looks forward to remaining that way as he pursues his wrestling goals. Guillen also excels in the classroom and is being courted by several college wrestling programs. At this point he is unsure of his plans. For now his focus is to continue to set the bar high for future Viking wrestlers to aspire to.

December 3, 2012 Guillen reaches 100-victory milestone, wins G-E Invitational. Team finished in top half Sixteen schools representing state powers from Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas participated in the 2012 Gardner-Edgerton Invitational. This year s event was made even stronger with the addition of defending Oklahoma state champion Broken Arrow and Kansas 6A champion Manhattan. Seaman finished in a respectable seventh-place with an individual champion, two finalists, and six medalists. The Vikes were the third highest placing team from Kansas. Highlighting the day for the Vikings was defending State Champion and currently top-ranked Bryant Guillen s performance. The senior 170-pounder went 4-0 on the day and won his weight class. Along the way he earned his one-hundredth career victory in the semi-finals over his #2 ranked 5A opponent from St. James. In the finals, he met Iowa s top-ranked 170-pounder from Southeast Polk High School. The powerful adversary controlled the match for much of the first and second periods, but Guillen used his unorthodox style to stay in the match and keep the score close. Late in the second period, however, Guillen hit a signature headlock that would prove too much; even for the credentialed Iowan. Guillen earned the fall in 3:48. Of the fourteen weight classes contested, Guillen was one of only two Kansans to win an individual title at this year s event. Heavyweight Dylan Hall also made it to the finals, where he also met a top-ranked Southeast Polk opponent. Hall wrestled well, but was unable to overcome his aggressive opponent in a 4-1 loss. He opened with a fall in 25-seconds and earned a hard-fought decision in the semi-finals. Nathan Stanley went 3-1 wrestling at 220 pounds. All of his wins were by fall and his loss s 10-9 heartbreaker in the semi-finals. He finished in third-place with a fall over his St. James opponent who had a higher ranking coming in. Khamin Crow wrestled well in his Seaman debut. He finished fourth at 113 with a 3-2 record that included two falls. Finishing in fifth-place was Brandon Fuller (132). His only loss was by decision in round 2. He finished 3-1 on the day with one fall. Rounding out the medalists was Sam Mizell. The 145-pound junior placed sixth. He was 3-2 on the day. Others participating but falling short of the medal round were; Jaelynn Gay (2-3 at 106 with a fall, 11 th place), Brandon Banks (1-3 at 126 with a fall, 13 th place), Daemeion Gay (2-3 at 138 with a fall, 11 th place), Luke Treiber (1-4 at 152 with a fall, 8 th place), and Bailey Kelly (2-2 at 182 with two falls, 9 th place) Gardner-Edgerton Team Scores; 1. 17 January 22, 2013 Seaman Wrestling hits academic mark Each year the Seaman Wrestling team sets a goal of earning a 3.0 or higher GPA and strives to reach the Cum Laude level (3.75 GPA) with its top 14 individuals (as a parallel to the fourteen weight classes in high school wrestling). This year s team earned impressive numbers in reaching both goals! The team s cumulative GPA is 3.1 and the top fourteen individuals have a cumulative GPA of The top fourteen will be recognized with Gold Standard certificates at the end-ofseason banquet. The group will also be recognized on a permanent academic display in the wrestling practice room. Additionally, Dylan Hall, Bryant Guillen, and Nathan Stanley are all in contention to be recognized as First Team All-Academic team members. This honor, along with a team recognition that the Vikings will also be vying for, is sponsored by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association (KWCA). 18 January 26, 2013 SEK Invitational Runner-up finish for Seaman; Guillen lone champ With six finalists and three still alive on the backside, Seaman s comfortable lead heading into the final round at Saturday s Southeast Kansas (SEK) Invitational at Chanute seemed unreachable. A hot Derby team coupled with a 2-7 final round for the Vikings knocked them down a notch in the fifteen-team field. Senior Bryant Guillen was Seaman s lone individual champion. He had three falls on the day and a dominating 15-0 Technical Fall in the finals. He is now 32-0 with 24 falls on the year. His school records in those categories have now moved to 129 wins and 93 falls. Sophomore Daemeion Gay (138), Senior Spencer Wilson (182), Freshman Bailey Kelly (195), Senior Nathan Stanley (220) and Senior Dylan Hall (285) all joined Guillen in the finals but all came up short. Gay turned some heads with his performance. He was a surprised finalist and lost a tight 2-0 decision in the finals. He was 2-1 on the day. Wilson also finished 2-1 on the day. He had one fall. Kelly finished 3-1. He had three falls before falling 6-4 in the finals. Stanley finished 2-1. He had a fall and a 3-1 victory over an opponent who he had lost to earlier in the season. He dropped a close 4-2 decision to his top-ranked (321A) opponent in the finals. Hall had two falls on his way to the finals, where he dropped a 3-2 decision. Senior Brandon Fuller (132) finished in third-place. He was 3-1 on the day with two falls. He lost a wild Double Overtime decision to the eventual champion for his only loss. Junior Sam Mizell (145) performed well, finishing 4-1 on the day. Due to the rule that allows a maximum of five matches per day, he was unable to compete in the consolation-finals. Sophomore Khamin Crow (113) finished 2-2 with a fall in his fourth-place performance. Sophomore Jaelynn Gay (106), Junior Brandon Banks (126), and Senior Luke Treiber (152) also represented the Vikings; all finished 0-2 on the day. 19 February 2, 2013 Vikes perform well at Silver Lake, but 200 points not enough for team title The Seaman Wrestling team put one of their best performances of the season together at Saturday s Silver Lake Invitational. The field of eighteen teams included 5A and All-Class #2 St. James Academy, along with 5A contenders Leavenworth and Salina South and several teams with strong individuals. The Vikings fought from the middle of the pack in the early going to outdistance Salina South close the gap with St. James. Individually, Seaman had seven medalists (top 4 finishers); including three finalists. Senior Bryant Guillen (170) was the lone champion. Seniors Nathan Stanley (220) and Dylan Hall (285) were runners-up, sophomore twins Jaelynn (106) and Daemeion (138) Gay finished in third-place along with Freshman Bailey Kelly (195). Junior Sam Mizell was fourth at 145 pounds. Placing fifth were; sophomore Khamin Crow (113), junior Brandon Banks (126), senior Brandon Fuller (132), and senior Spencer Wilson (182). Senior Luke Treiber (152) also represented the Vikings on Saturday. Guillen continues to have a remarkable season. In a battle of the #1 vs. #2 ranked 5A 170-pounders, Guillen made a statement! After scoreless first period, Seaman s returning State Champion reeled off ten unanswered points to win by Major Decision. The victory ran his season record to a perfect 35-0; his career tally stands at 132 wins and 95 falls. Other notable performances included; Daemeion Gay recording two falls and finished 4-1 on the day, Jaelynn finished with a 3-1 record and pinned an opponent in the consolation-finals that he beat only 4-0 in the opening round. Sam Mizell came out of arguably the deepest weight class in the tournament with a fourth-place medal. Along the way he beat an opponent that he was previously 0-3 against and lost in overtime to an opponent who has beaten him twice this season. Banks recorded two falls on the day to increase his season total to nine. Hall and Stanley have been quietly making their own noise this season. The two are tied at eighty-one career wins; good enough for a tie with 2005 grad Caleb Malone for #16 on the All-Time wins list. Additionally, Hall recorded his fifty-eighth career fall on Saturday. With three more he will pass 2007 grad Travis Kehler to claim the #2 position behind Guillen on Seaman s All-Time falls list. With his transfer-in data, Wilson has the #14 position on the All-Time wins list; behind 2008 grad Bryson Conaway and ahead of 1995 State Champion Justin Glasgow. Also of statistical significance is the team s cumulative fall data. On Saturday, with three weeks of competition remaining, the team achieved the season goal of 150 falls. 20 February 6, 2013 Newman University vs. Baker University; Cooksley vs. Singer During last night s Newman University vs. Baker University wrestling dual in Wichita, two Seaman grads competed against each other! Baker senior Rick Singer (SHS Class of 2009) and Newman junior Steven Cooksley (SHS Class of 2010) met in the 197-pound match. Cooksley, a 2012 NCAA Div. II National Qualifier, pulled out a 3-2 victory to help the Jets to a 27-7 dual meet win. It was likely Singer s final match of his college career. He is a member of the first class of wrestlers at Baker. The program was started in the fall of 2009.

February 9, 2013 Seaman finishes third in Centennial League tournament The Seaman wrestling team finished in third-place in the ten-team Centennial League tournament at Junction City behind the host school and Manhattan. Making the finals were sophomore Khamin Crow (113), senior Bryant Guillen (170), senior Spencer Wilson (182), and senior Nathan Stanley (220). Guillen and Wilson won titles. Finishing third were sophomore Daemeion Gay (138), freshman Bailey Kelly (195), and senior Dylan Hall (285). Rounding out the medalists as fourth-place finishers were sophomore Jaelynn Gay (106) and junior Sam Mizell (145). Freshman Cody Desch (120), junior Brandon Banks (126), sophomore Kody Davis (132), freshman Mason Ray (152), and junior Skylar Grant (160) also participated, but fell short of placing. Davis, who defeated a former state qualifier by fall, was a last minute replacement and Grant moved up two weight classes in order to compete. With his victory in the finals, Guillen earned his thirty-eighth win of the season; good enough to tie Steven Cooksley (Class of 2010) and TJ Lorson (Class of 2007) for #1 on Seaman s all-time single-season wins list. His career log now stands at 135 wins and 97 falls. He also became Seaman s first-ever three-time Centennial League Champion. The league held its first wrestling championship during the season. Wilson made the finals with a Technical Fall in the semi-finals. In the finals he met a defending State Champion from Shawnee Heights. Wilson controlled the match early and hit a perfectly executed headlock to secure a fall half-way through the first period. The two-time state medalist earned his eighty-sixth career victory on Saturday. With his transferin wins, that places him in a tie for thirteenth place on Seaman s all-time wins list with 2008 grad Bryson Conaway. Crow and Stanley both performed well in the finals against highly ranked opponents, but were unable to pull out victories. Daemeion Gay came through arguably the deepest weight class from the #6 seed to claim third-place. Kelly earned two falls over ranked opponents and was voted Centennial League Newcomer of the Year. Hall earned a victory over his highly-regarded Junction City opponent in overtime to claim third-place. It marked the final time these two outstanding heavyweights will meet. They have had nearly a dozen tightly contested matches over their high school career. Jaelynn Gay and Mizell both went 2-2 on the day. Last week, the team reached its goal of 150 falls. This week, the guys added to that total and captured their 300 th win to reach their goal in that category. The team now has 303 wins and 166 falls. The team finished in strong fashion with thirtyfour wins on the day, twenty of them by pin, while only losing by pin five times out of twenty-six matches. Seventeen out of twenty-seven junior varsity competitors finished the season with.500 or better records. Spencer Fortney, Jared Johnson, and Colton Moranz all wrestled in thirty or more matches this season. Mason Ray, Shannon Dobbs and Malcolm Mikkelson had the top junior varsity win percentages this season. All but one of the seventeen who competed is an underclassman. 22 February 9, 2013 Seaman grad Austin Ogden qualifies for NJCAA nationals 2011 Seaman High School graduate and current Neosho County Community College wrestler Austin Ogden qualified for the 2013 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Nationals by virtue of his thirdplace performance in the 165-pound weight class at the NJCAA West Central District Regionals held at Pratt Community College. Ogden dropped a 2-0 decision in the opening round of the Region 6 tournament to nationally ranked Sheldon Graves of Pratt (2011 State Champion from Rossville High School). After winning by fall over an opponent from Northwest Kansas Technical College (who beat Ogden earlier this season), he met Graves again in the consolation finals. This time it was Ogden coming on top by a commanding 13-1 Major Decision! The NJCAA nationals will be held at the Jacobson Exhibition Center at the Fairground in Des Moines, Iowa February

February 16, 2013 Seaman wins Regional Wrestling Title; first since 2005 Last year Seaman finished ½ point shy of a Regional championship behind host Emporia. This year the host school again came out on top. It was Seaman s first Regional title in eight years and the tenth in the program s history. The last title came in Coach Switzky s final season at Seaman in The Vikes led this year s event from early on, but was challenged by runner-up Heights during the final round. Eleven Vikings punched their ticket to Sate with a top-four finish. Leading the way were champions; senior Brandon Fuller (132), sophomore Daemeion Gay (138), junior Sam Mizell (145), freshman Mason Ray (152), and senior Bryant Guillen (170). Finishing second were; sophomore Jaelynn Gay (106) and sophomore Khamin Crow (113). Third-place finishers included; junior Brandon Banks (126), freshman Bailey Kelly (195), senior Nathan Stanley (220), and senior Dylan Hall (285). Freshman Cody Desch (120), senior Luke Treiber (160), and senior Spencer Wilson (182) also participated but did not qualify. Fuller is back at state after qualifying in He was injured last season and is looking for a powerful finish to his career. Daemeion Gay s progress during the past several weeks has been nothing short of amazing. He has established himself as medal contender by picking up several significant wins recently. His finals opponent has thirty-eight wins on the season including a 7-3 win over Gay just four weeks ago. The powerful and explosive Mizell earned a fall in the finals over an opponent he lost to in early January. Ray entered the varsity line-up only last week and made the most of the opportunity by earning a Regional title. He earned a solid win in the finals over an opponent who beat him only one week ago at the Centennial League tournament. Guillen continues to impress. He enters his final state tournament with a sparkling 40-0 record on the season. He now has 137 career wins and 98 career falls. Jaelynn Gay and Crow performed well in the Regional tournament, but didn t quite have enough to overcome their finals opponents. Crow notched his 30 th win of the season and sixty-fourth of his career. Gay has twenty-seven wins on the season. Banks won a hard-fought 15-7 Major Decision to finish in third-place. Kelly, Stanley, and Hall made it three, thirdplace finishes in a row for the Vikes. The freshman is now one win shy of thirty. Stanley and Hall continue to inch their way up the career wins list. Hall entered the day #3 on the Seaman all-time falls list and had possession of #2 by days end. His two falls pushes his career total to sixty-one; one ahead of 2007 grad Travis Kehler. 24 February 22, 2013 Guillen notches rare 100 th career fall Seaman senior Bryant Guillen added another accolade to his growing list this season. With a fall in the quarterfinals at state, he has joined only fourteen other Kansas wrestlers that have earned one hundred or more falls during their high school wrestling careers. Former Goddard State Champion and current Oklahoma State University All-American and NCAA runner-up Tyler Caldwell leads the list with 125 career falls. The list also includes Iowa State NCAA Champion Zach Roberson (Blue Valley Northwest, 109 falls) and Rossville s Duane Zlatnik, who tallied 110 falls before his days as a stand-out offensive lineman for KU. Guillen s 100 th fall was also his thirty-first of the season, which puts him #1 on Seaman s singleseason falls list. Travis Kehler previously held the record of thirty since his senior season of BRYANT GUILLEN S FALL LOG (freshman) 23 falls (sophomore) 27 falls (junior) 19 falls (senior) 31 falls

February 23, 2013 Three finalists pace fourth-place state finish for Seaman Last year s Seaman state team finished in sixth-place for the highest placing since the 1995 team brought home a thirdplace trophy. The six individual medalists tied a school record and the one-hundred fifteen team points was the most ever. The 2013 State Team turned in an even more impressive finish when they recorded the same record-setting team score and six medalists, but finished in fourth-place. The team also had a school record three state finalists. Senior Bryant Guillen (170) led the way with his second State Championship. Sophomore Daemeion Gay (138) and Senior Dylan Hall (285) finished as State Runners-up. Senior Nathan Stanley (220) earned a fourth-place medal. Freshman Bailey Kelly (195) finished fifth and Sophomore Khamin Crow (113) finished in sixth-place. Senior Brandon Fuller (132) finished 2-2, Junior Sam Mizell (145) and Sophomore Jaelynn Gay (106) went 1-2, and Freshman Mason Ray (152) and Junior Brandon Banks (126) went 0-2. Guillen capped a remarkable career off with his second state championship and rewrote the Seaman Wrestling records book along the way. He became Seaman s first two-time State Champion and the school s first four-time State Medalist. His one hundred forty one wins is twenty-six more than the second-most in school history. After a first round fall and another in the quarter-finals at this year s tournament, he became only the fifteenth Kansas high school wrestler record to record one hundred career falls. His 100 th fall also marked the thirty-first of the season; good enough to take over the top spot in Seaman s single season falls category. Only Dennis Switzky (26-0 in 1968), Gary Stumpf (21-0 in 1972), and Don Krahn (22-0 in 1978) have finished as undefeated State Champions for Seaman. This year Guillen doubled Krahn s wins when he finished a perfect 44-0! Guillen s 16-4 record in the state tournament over his four tournaments includes an improbable thirteen falls and an 11-4 decision over a defending State Champion. Gay continued to make strides from the first practice of the season to the last. He was one of the biggest surprises of the entire 5A tournament when he made the finals and lost a narrow 1-0 decision in his finals match. He finished with thirtyone wins on the season after having recorded only eight last season. Hall turned in an outstanding performance in last year s state tournament when he finished fourth. This year he was even more impressive when he made the finals and pushed his nationally ranked opponent (who has signed to wrestle for Stanford University in the fall) in a 9-2 loss. Hall, an ESU football recruit, will go down as one of the finest heavyweights in Seaman Wrestling history. He finished his career in the #2 spot behind Guillen in career falls with 63 and in a three-way tie with Hunter Garrett (SHS 2010) and Travis Kehler (SHS 2007) for the #12 position in career wins with 88. Stanley s accomplishments from the Kansas Kids level through high school are impressive. He has made the finals four times and won two State Championships at the club-level and made his third trip to the high school tournament in He closed his career in the #11 spot on Seaman s all-time wins list with 90. However, he had never placed in the state tournament during his high school career. This year he made his way through a deep 220-pound weight class and finished with a fourth-place medal. Stanley had an impressive senior campaign finishing with thirty-three wins and twenty falls, but never saw his way into the rankings during the entire season. In order to earn a place on the medal stand, he

had to get past an opponent who had forty-seven wins on the season; including an overtime victory over Stanley in late January. He earned an inspirational victory in Ultimate Tiebreaker when he was able to earn an escape. He went on to win his consolation semi-finals match before falling in consolation finals. In 2010 Guillen became the first freshman in Seaman Wrestling history to earn a state medal. Kelly became the second; ironically equaling Guillen s fifth-place showing. He was 4-2 at his first state tournament and had thirty-three wins and nineteen falls on the season. Crow is halfway to four state medals. The Silver Lake transfer needed a win in the consolation quarter-finals over an opponent who handily defeated him only three weeks ago in order to find a place on the awards stand. He made it happen with a solid 5-3 victory and went on to earn a sixth-place medal. Fuller s 2-2 record included a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in the placing round. The senior finished with thirty-four wins on the season (second behind Guillen) and twenty falls. Mizell closed out the season with thirty wins and nine falls and his second trip to state. Jaelynn Gay finished with 28 wins and 14 falls. Banks ended with fifteen wins and nine falls. Ray had an outstanding freshman season going on the junior varsity level before stepping into the varsity line-up and capturing a Regional title and qualifying for state. He finished with a fall and eight wins on the varsity level this year. The program will miss the seniors from this year s team. They were one of the most accomplished group to come through in several years. However, with three state medalists and another four qualifiers returning, the excitement for the for season has already begun. 1. The top five were composed of 5A champ Ark City, 6A champ Garden City, 5A Runner-up St. James, 5A third-place team Aquinas, and 6A Runner-up and Centennial League Champion Junction City. #6 is Derby (3 rd in 6A). Seaman comes in at #7, followed by Valley Center (who finished one spot behind the Vikings at 5 th place in the 5A tournament). The final two spots were filled with 4A champion Holton and 321A champion Norton. Individually the Vikings landed three in the rankings. Bryant Guillen s dream season was rewarded with a coveted #1 ranking at 170 pounds. Nathan Stanley didn t even crack the 5A rankings all season, but saved his best performance of the year when it mattered most. He beat his 47-5 Valley Center opponent to make the medal round and his Ark City opponent (who narrowly lost in the state semifinals to the eventually champion) in the consolation semifinals, on is way to a fourth-place finish. Dylan Hall also put his best on display at the state tournament. Two of his three wins at the state tournament were over opponents who beat him during the season. His other win was by fall and his loss in the finals was competitive 9-2 loss against a nationally ranked opponent who easily pinned Hall only three weeks ago. Seaman s Spencer Wilson (senior, 182 pounds) did not make the ranking, but owns victories over three individuals who do appear in the rankings. He beat the #2, #4, and #6 ranked individuals during the season. Freshman Bailey Kelly (195 pounds) had a win during the season over the #8 ranked wrestler.

March 4, 2013 All-City Wrestling 2013; Three First-Team selections, Guillen 4X Selection Seaman landed three on the First-Team All-City Wrestling Team for The First-Team is made up of the most diverse selection in years. Shawnee Heights had five First-Teamers, Seaman and Topeka High both had three. Washburn Rural, Topeka West, and Hayden each had one First-Teamer. Damon Parker of WR was named Coach of the Year. Bryant Guillen becomes the first Seaman wrestler to be named to the First-Team all four years of his high school career (the recognition began with the season). Nathan Stanley was a First-Team selection last year and is now a Three-Time Second-Team pick. Brandon Fuller was a two-time First-Team selection in addition to his Second-Team selection this season. Dylan Hall became a two-time Second-Team pick. He made Honorable Mention as a sophomore. With three state champions and a total of thirteen state medals from three different schools, wrestling in Topeka is as competitive as it has ever been. The 285-pound weight class alone included a State Champion, a State Runner-up, a fourth-place finisher, and a qualifier. FIRST- TEAM KHAMIN CROW (Soph., 113), DAEMEION GAY (Soph., 138), BRYANT GUILLEN (Sr., 170) SECOND- TEAM BRANDON FULLER (Sr., 132), SAM MIZELL (Jr., 145), MASON RAY (Fr., 152), BAILEY KELLY (Fr., 195), NATHAN STANLEY (Sr., 220), DYLAN HALL (Sr., 285) HONORABLE MENTION JAELYNN GAY (Soph., 106), CODY DESCH (Fr., 120), BRANDON BANKS (Jr., 126), SPENCER WILSON (Sr., 182)

March 6, 2013 Guillen participates in KC Metro Classic The twenty-first annual Metro Classic, held at Kansas City Kansas Community College on March 5 th, is one of the most high-profile all-star events of the spring each year. An enthusiastic crowd of nearly one-thousand turns out each year for the event in addition to an audience watching the livestream broadcast. This year Bryant Guillen was invited to participate in the senior-only event. Only three other Seaman wrestlers have been invited to participate since its inception. In 1995, Marc Thompson (130 pounds) and Justin Glasgow (275 pounds) represented Kansas. In 2011, Cole Schreiner (140 pounds) took to the mat for Team Kansas. Ironically, two members of the Seaman coaching staff participated in the event. Chad Flores (Silver Lake) represented Kansas at the 1997 event at 130 pounds and a year later Tim Horgan (Rossville) did the same at 140 pounds. Both went on to have outstanding college wrestling careers; Flores at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, Horgan at Labette Community College. With a seven-pound weight allowance, Guillen went down a weight class and wrestled at 160-pounds. His opponent carried national credentials. Austin Eads of Blue Springs South High School is a four-time state medalist with a career record. He accumulated 106 pins during his career and was a Junior National Freestyle finalist last summer. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete at Old Dominion, an NCAA Division I institution. Guillen s performance was nothing short of impressive. He shut down his opponent s offense and created scoring opportunities for himself in an 8-2 route. He nearly pinned Eads in a cradle in the third period. His efforts helped fuel a competitive team race that went down to the heavyweight match. Missouri came out on top For full results and details see
