1 FOOTBALL Coach Earl Perkins With only ten lettermen returning, Coach Perkins is cautiously optimistic and says the kicking and passing game should be strong this season. ACC dropped its opener 21-3 to Anoka Ramsey. Danny Caballero kicked a 26 yard field goal in the second quarter and ACC trailed 7-3 at half. Austin could not gather any momentum and failed to score a TD the entire game. On defense, Jeff Sanders was in on 21 tackles, 15 of them coming unassisted. Rochester handed ACC its second lost 34-6 in conference action. The game was played in a complete downpour. Rochester led 14-0 and when lightning occured, the game was then delayed an hour. ACC s only touchdown was Fabian Talamantes 13 yard scamper in the fourth quarter. Austin gained its first victory with a 31-0 shutout over Inver Hills. ACC gained 471 total offense with 334 coming on the ground. Caballero had a 25 yard field goal for to put Austin on the board first. In the second quarter, ACC had a 93 yard drive capped off by a Tim Olinger one yard run. Austin led 9-0. With seconds to go in the first half, Caballero connected again, this time from 25 yards and ACC led 12-0 at halftime. Three more second half TD s rounded out the scoring; a 64 yard run by Talamantes, and two touchdown passes from quarterback Tim Olinger to Jim Turvey (9 and 12 yard scoring tosses). ACC dropped to 1-3 as North Hennepin edged the Blue Devils A 35 yard field goal by North Hennepin with 4:52 to play secured the win for the Norsemen. Austin led in the fourth quarter after Olinger had hooked up with Bill Ehret for a 20 yard TD. Normandale defeated Austin in conference action to drop ACC to 1-4 on the season. Tied late in the third quarter, the Lions kick-off receiver returned one 90 yards which shifted all the momentum. Olinger was 13 of 24 for 213 yards and Bill Ehret caught 5 passes for 112 yards in the loss. ACC was shutout by Willmar 13-0 in a game Coach Perkins described as, it was a game lost in areas that don t show up in the stats. The loss was the fifth in six games for Austin Community College. For the third year in a row, ACC tied Worthington with the score 7-7. Austin s lone score was a 25 yard TD pass from Olinger to Jim Turvey with the extra point good. In the annual Pigskin Bowl, Waseca would retain the football and coveted prize as they defeated ACC Austin scored first on a 60 yard run by Olinger and the PAT by Pat Aldrich was good and ACC led 7-0. Waseca out gained Austin 321 to 190 on offense. The loss was the final game of the season and the Blue Devils ended the season Jeff Sanders (LB) was named to the All-Conference, All-MJCAA, and All- Region XIII teams on defense. Linda Tapp and Kathy Upcraft are the lone veterans. ACC won its opening two matches, defeating Iowa Lakes 2-0 and upending Inver Hills in three games 2-1. Austin made it three in a row by handing Normandale a 3-1 loss in a five setter. Lynne Towne scored 12 straight points in game one after trailing ACC went on to win and proceeded to win in four games. Austin lost its first match of the year to Normandale dropping to 3-1 on the season. In an eight team invitational at North Hennepin, Austin tied Hibbing 2-15, 15-13, defeated Northland 15-2, 15-8, lost to North Hennepin 10-15, 11-15, and lost to Rochester 15-4, 5-15, to take sixth place in the tournament and a overall record. ACC split it next four games, defeating Lakewood 2-0, losing to Anoka Ramsey 2-0, winning over Bethany 2-1 and losing to Rochester 2-1. These games left ACC with a overall record and 1-1 in the conference. The Lady Blue Devils lost two matches, one to Golden Valley 2-0 and the other to North Hennepin (2-1). After splitting with Willmar and Worthington, ACC stood at

In a rematch, Waseca defeated ACC 10-15, 15-10, 15-7 and NIACC also won in three, 15-13, 13-15, Austin climbed back to.500 by defeating Worthington 2-1 and Bethany 2-0. The two wins gave ACC a 5-3 division record and a season record. Austin split its last four games and left them with a record going into the southern division play-off. Seated second, the Lady Blue Devils upended Worthington 9-15, 15-1, 15-7, then lost to Rochester 4-15, and finally were defeated by Willmar 10-15, Austin concluded its season and for the first time since 1975 since the state tournament began, ACC would not be attending. We will have to rely on our quickness more than last year. Plagued by poor shooting (32 %), ACC lost its opener Dave Sabyan headed the Blue Devils with 15 points. Austin lost by fifty-eight points in a thumping to Waldorf. Terry Pelzl had 17 point to lead ACC in the loss. Austin remained winless with an loss to North Hennepin. Four players scored in double figures despite the loss, led by Sabyan with 13. The ACC Blue Devil men dropped their fourth in a row with a decision to WWTI. Kevin Jorgenson had 14 to lead his team as ACC shot a 30% for the contest. The men s basketball team showed improvement on defense but still lost to Inver Hills. Bob Anderson and Jorgenson each had 13 points for ACC. Austin ended its five game losing streak with a win over Southwest Fennemore. Kevin Jorgenson netted 22 for the Blue Devils whose record now stands at 1-5. Pete VanProosdy hauled down 16 rebounds and chipped in with nine points. Austin suffered two losses in the North Hennepin invitational, losing to Vermilion and dropping its second game to North Hennepin. VanProosdy (16) and Jergenson (22) led them in scoring respectively. Iowa Lakes blasted ACC to drop them to 1-8 on the season. Freshman Kevin Jergenson scored 20 points before fouling out, while Terry Pelzl netted 18 points. ACC lost their ninth game in ten starts with a non-conference loss to Metro Community College of Minneapolis. Lon Anderson and Terry Pelzl each had 15 markers to pace ACC. The Blue Devils started slow but won their conference opener, defeating Waseca Trailing early in the second half, ACC took the lead on a Pelzl basket and increased it to 13 points with 8:15 remaining in the contest. Jergenson had 24, Pelzl, 20, Sabyan 16, and Lon Anderson 14. Austin stands 2-9 on the season. ACC loses its final nine games. Willmar clobbered ACC in conference action. It was the 10 th loss in twelve starts for Austin. Jergenson netted 21 to lead Austin. Worthington won in a lopsided victory over ACC. Bethany rolled over Austin giving the Blue Devils a 1-3 division record.

4 Terry Pelzl netted 21 points and Kevin Jergenson had 19. Rochester made it four losses in a row for Austin as they defeated the Blue Devils Jergenson had 18 to lead Austin. Waseca whipped ACC avenging a loss earlier they suffered to the Blue Devils. Jergenson netted 23 and Dave Sabyan had 19 in defeat. The loss dropped ACC to Willmar cruises over ACC in conference action. It was their sixth consecutive loss. Freshman center Kevin Jergenson led the scoring with 21 points. It was the fourth time an opponent has reached the century mark against the Blue Devils. After losing by 41 points to Worthington the first time, ACC closed the gap but still lost to Worthington. Jergenson had 19 followed by Terry Pelzl with 18 points. Bethany handed Austin a drubbing in the next to last game. The Blue Devils fell to Rochester to end the season on a nine game losing streak and 2-18 on the season. ACC had three players score over 20 in the finale. Terry Pelzl led the way with 24 points, while Kevin Jergenson chipped in with 22 and Dave Sabyan netted 20. The Lady Blue Devils opened the season with a triumph over Hibbing. Upcraft and Dawn Anderson each had 14 points to lead ACC in scoring. Rochester upended Austin in the championship game of the Rochester Invitational. Bosshart had 18 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. In a rematch of last year s finals, ACC defeated Inver Hills Playing without Cindy Bosshart (knee injury in practice day before), Kathy Upcraft scored 15 while Linda Tapp chipped in with 12 points. ACC opened it own invitational with an win over North Hennepin. Tapp had 26 points and 13 steals while Upcraft recorded 20 tallies. Austin won the ACC Invitational with a convincing win over Anoka Ramsey. Diane Diggins led the way with 18 points and 8 assists while Linda Tapp had 15 points and six steals. The win upped ACC s record to 4-1. Austin defeated Normandale as Dawn Anderson poured in 23 points. Upcraft (19), Tapp (18), Diggins (12), and Mary Eilliot rounded out the scoring. The Lady Blue Devils rallied from six down at halftime and defeated the Mankato State JVs After learning that sophomore Sherri Bosshart (All-State and All-Region last year( is out for the season with a knee injury, Dawn Anderson stepped up and had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead ACC to the victory. Austin upped its record to 7-1 with a win over Minneapolis. Despite having 30 turnovers, ACC out rebounded the cities team and scoring leaders Anderson (18) and Tapp (14) led the team to victory.

5 The Lady Blue Devils got a tremendous team effort in their win over Waseca in the conference opener. Without the services of Bosshart, Upcraft and Diggins (the latter two had the flu), Linda Tapp knocked down 21, followed by Anderson with 16, Cheri Westphal had 10, and Mary Truebenback chopped in with 10 points. ACC improved its record to 9-1 with a win over Willmar in conference action. A rebounding edge was the difference of the game. Kathy Upcraft had 14 to lead the team in scoring. Winning their ninth straight, the Lady Blue Devils handed arch rival Worthington a defeat and improved to 3-0 in the league. Dawn Anderson had 16 while Laurie Shoff had 10. Austin lost its first conference game (3-1) as Pat Niermann scored 49 points to lead Bethany to a thriller over Austin. Upcraft had 22 points in the loss. ACC whipped Rochester after having their nine game winning streak snapped by Bethany. Shoff and Anderson led the team with 15 and 14 respectively. Austin upped its conference record to 5-1 by defeating Waseca Anderson (14), Linda Tapp (14), and Margene Elliott (11) led the team in scoring. Linda Tapp poured in 19 points to lead ACC to a victory over Willmar to up their record to 13-2 overall and remain on top of the standings tied with Bethany (6-1). Along with Tapp, Dawn Anderson had 18 and Diane Diggins chipped in with 15 points. A cold shooting night cost ACC a southern division contest as Worthington upset the Lady Blue Devils Dawn Anderson netted 12 points to lead her team in scoring. Austin rebounded by defeating the Mankato State JV s Anderson poured in 21 points in the victory as ACC now stands 14-3 overall. Inver Hills stopped Austin in a tough non-conference battle. Kathy Upcraft had 16 followed by Linda tapp with 14 tallies. Bethany (8-1) remained on top of the division with a victory over ACC. A win would of gave ACC a share of the lead but Austin stands 6-3 and tied with Worthington for second. Tapp had 13 points in the loss. The hopes of a state championship went down the drain as ACC dropped a decision to Rochester. Austin had to win to remain in second place and a berth in the state tourney. ACC finished last year as the state runner-up, finishes 14-6 and 6-4 in the league. Linda Tapp was named to the All-Conference and All-State teams, along with being a second team selection on the All-Region team. Dawn Anderson was also named to the All- Conference team. In 21 years I have never been so baffled as I was with that team, as Perkins was referring to last year squad. We are excited about this team and with the depth ACC looks promising on paper. ACC opened its season with a 9-0 win over Lindsey Wilson as the Blue Devils took a trip to Kentucky to get its season started. In the nightcap ACC lost 4-1.

6 Dan Jansen and Tim Olinger combined on a one-hitter in game one, while Tom Strey had 2 homeruns and 3 RBI for the day. The following day in Kentucky ACC lost 4-3 and then rebounded with a 7-2 win, leaving the southern trip even at 2-2. Steve Wilson, Howey Strey, Kevin Scwab, and Craig Lady all homered in the twin bill. The Blue Devils split a doubleheader with Inver Hills, losing 5-2 and winning the nightcap 6-3. In game one, both teams committed 2 errors and collected only 4 hits. Jim Hortsmann had a 3 run homer and Peter Van Proosdy pitched six strong innings for the win in game two. ACC remained at.500 by splitting a pair with NICC, winning 8-7 in the first game and dropping the second Trailing 5-1 in the first contest, ACC scored 6 runs in the third inning and a won the game in the seventh on a two out single by Steve Wilson. Austin committed 8 errors in the nightcap. The Blue Devils swept Rochester 6-3 and to up their record to 3-1 in the division. Jim Miller gained the mound win in the opener and Jim Langan recorded a save. Tim Olinger came in relief and pitched 4 innings to gain the win in the nightcap while Langan recorded another save. ACC made it four wins in a row with 11-0 and 10-0 decisions over WWTI in non-conference action. Both games ended after five innings due to the 10 run rule. Scott Woites had two hits and 3 RBI while Dan Jansen pitched a 3-hitter in the opener. Game two saw Steve Wilson hit a 3 run homerun while Jim Langan pitched a two hitter. The wins upped ACC s record to 8-4. ACC split with Normandale in a key double-header winning 6-5 before losing the nightcap Down 4-0 after the first inning, Austin battle back with Woites and Strey each collecting two key hits apiece in the victory. Jim Miller pitched seven strong innings and struck out 10 hitters in gaining the win. Game two saw ACC commit 8 errors and drop to 4-2 in the league. The Winona State JV team handed Austin their 2 nd and 3 rd consecutive losses as the defeated ACC 3-2 and 5-4 in nonconference action. The Blue Devils had 8 errors on the day and collected only 10 hits in the two contests. Austin rebounded after losing three straight by upending Inver Hills 8-5 and 11-8 in league play. Both teams were 4-2 coming in to play, with the winner of the first game advancing to the sub-regional (Normandale had to forfeit 4 games so ACC got a second chance to qualify for the Region tournament). In game one, Jim Miller pitched complete game and struck out 8 batters. Dan Jansen picked up the win in relief in the nightcap. The Blue Devils are now 11-7 on the season. ACC advanced to the Region XIII tournament by defeating Milwaukee Tech in the sub-regional contest. Trailing 5-2 after five innings, ACC tallied 10 runs in the 6 th inning and held one for the victory. Jim Hortsmann had 4 hits, 2 RBI and scored 3 runs, Kevin Schwab went 3 for 4 and scored 3 runs, while Tom Strey went 3 for 6 and had 3 RBI. Austin lost 9-3 and 12-5 to the Mankato State JV team in non-conference action. No pitcher for ACC saw more than 3 innings for their next action will be the Region XIII tournament. The losses drop ACC to 12-9 on the season. Playing their best effort of the season according to Coach Earl Perkins, ACC captured the Region XIII championship and earned themselves a berth in the two team double elimination district final in Austin. Austin defeated Anoka Ramsey 3-0 in first round action of the region. Jim Miller pitched seven innings giving up three hits, giving away to Dan Jansen who recorded a save with two innings of shutout ball.

7 The Blue Devils then handled Brainerd 9-3 to win the championship. Pete Van Proosdy gave ACC seven strong innings, given up one run and seven hits. Jim Langan came on in relief and recorded a save giving up 3 unearned runs. Six ACC players had two hits in the championship game; Steve Woitas, Steve Tufte, Kevin Scwab, Steve Wilson, Bob Anderson and Jeff Johnson. Austin upped its record to ACC split with Rochester, losing 2-1 and winning the nightcap Dan Jansen lost a tough opener as he struck out 11 and game up only 3 hits in the loss. ACC banged out 12 hits in game two (compared to 5 hits in game one), as Jim Langan pitched five innings for the win. Tim Olinger had 3 hits and 4 RBI in the win. ACC committed no errors in the twin bill and stand 7-3 in division play. Austin hosted the North Central District versus Indian Hills, Iowa with the winner advancing to the NJCAA Baseball World Series. ACC lost game one 8-0 to Indian Hills (40-12) as the Blue Devils collected only 4 hits. Austin lost 12-7 in eleven innings in the second contest, eliminating the Blue Devils from any further District play. Had ACC won there would have been a third game to decide the champion. We had our chances said Coach Earl Perkins referring to the second contest. ACC led 4-0 after two innings but could not hang on the lead and were trailing 6-4 in the fifth inning. ACC went ahead with 3 runs in the next two innings but the Falcons tied it 7-7 in the seventh inning. The chances Perkins was referring to saw the Blue Devils strand runners on second and third in the eighth inning and first and second in the tenth inning. Tied 7-7 in the eleventh, back to back homers propelled Indian Hills to the 12-7 extra inning victory. ACC split its final doubleheader with Normandale, winning 12-9 before losing the nightcap 7-3 to finish the regular season 8-4 in the league. The Blue Devils completed their season at the state tournament and were eliminated in the first round losing 10-1 to Golden Valley. ACC collected only 6 hits compared to 15 by their opponent. Austin finished the season overall. Kevin Schwab led them in hitting (.406) going with 22 runs and 19 RBI. 8 SOFTBALL Coach Sue Nelson SJCAA-State 3rd First year Coach Sue Nelson inherits a team with five letter-winners that finished fourth in the national tournament last season. They include: Lori Bergstrom, Mary Satern, Linda Tapp, Kathy Upcraft, and Sue Adams. ACC opened its season in the Inver Hills tourney and won their first two contests before dropping the third game. ACC defeated Fergus Falls 6-5 as Bergstrom recorded the mound victory. In game two, ACC easily defeated Waseca 12-5 as Michelle Barnett started for the Lady Blue Devils but ran into trouble and Bergstrom go the win in relief. In the championship contest, ACC lost 4-3 to Anoka Ramsey as Bergstrom again saw the hill and took the loss. Austin defeated Willmar in the wind and rain, winning 11-5 and Mary Brackey collected four hits and Kathy Upcraft had 3 hits in the opener. Game two the Lady Blue Devils were led by Linda Tapp and Mary Satern who each collected 3 hits. Lori Bergstrom was the winning pitcher in both contests. ACC made it four wins in a row with 4-3 and 13-0 decisions over Worthington. Bergstrom threw a no-hitter in game as Austin permitted three unearned runs. Bergstrom threw 4 more innings of no hit ball to start the second game in the mound win. Linda Tapp had three hits in the nightcap and saw her team up their record to 6-1. In the Austin Invitational, ACC won their first two games, defeating Rainy River 18-7 and Hibbing 1-0. The Lady Blue Devils lost the championship 10-6 to Rochester. Kathy Upcraft recorded the mound win in game one, while Sheri Neve had 3 hits and 2 RBI. Lori Bergstrom pitched a two-hitter in the win over Hibbing. Marg Elliott had the game winning RBI. Bergstrom gave up seven hits and recorded the loss in the title game. The ACC softball team, ranked 15 th in the country, rebounded from four consecutive losses to win the consolation championship in the Waseca Invitational. After losing 5-0 to Anoka Ramsey, 3-2 to Willmar, 2-0 to Inver Hills and 3-1 to Rochester, ACC then defeated Willmar 7-6 and Waseca 5-2 for fifth place honors. Austin now stands 10-6 on the season. The Lady Blue Devils took two from Waseca, winning 13-0 and 13-1 in conference action. Mary Satern and Mary Brackey each collected three hits in game one. Brackey, Lynne Towne, and Mary Truenbach each had two hits in the nightcap. In the southern division playoffs, ACC defeated Waseca in the first round. Linda Tapp had 3 hits as Austin belted 13 for the game. Lori Bergstrom recorded the mound win despite giving up 15 hits. Rochester defeated ACC 6-4 in the Southern Division championship game. ACC, now 13-8 will attempt to defend its state title. A win versus Rochester would of advanced Austin to the Region tournament. Austin lost the opener in the Anoka Ramsey Invitational 4-2 to Normandale. They bounced back with wins over Hibbing (2-0) and Vermilion (14-2) to win the consolation title. In the state tournament where the Lady Blue Devils were the defending champions, ACC came away with a third place trophy as they lost to Normandale 3-2 before being eliminated by Rochester 3-0. In the first day of competition, Austin collected two wins to advance to undefeated bracket before losing its final two games. ACC ended the season Linda Tapp was named to the All-State and All-Region XIII team.

The invite was shortened to 9 holes due to rain. Scott Banton was Austin s low scorer with a 39, good for 4 th place. Doug Koch shot a 41, Matt Daniels 44, Brian Janning 47, and Reed Miller a 48. In the Normandale invitational, ACC finished 5 th out of 11 teams, shooting a 347. Banton took third with a round of 76. In the North Hennepin tournament, the Blue Devils finished 6 out of seven teams shooting a 346. Brian Janning had his season low round with a 78. In the state and region tournament, ACC shot a 686 and finished in 8 th place out of 14 teams. Janning and Matt Daniels each had a two day total of 170, followed by Reed Miller (171) and Tom Claussen (176). TENNIS, Men s Coach David Dickinson & Terry Dilley 0-8 The men s tennis team returned two players, Karl Hedin and Scott Meeker. ACC went winless during the season. They opened the season with a 5-4 loss to Bethany. North Hennepin shut out the Blue Devils 9-0 in the second match. Rochester handed Austin a 6-3 decision to drop them to 0-3. Inver Hills defeated ACC twice 8-1 and in between those matches Normandale upended ACC 7-0. The three losses drop ACC to 0-6. In their final two matches, Austin lost to Rochester 6-3 and 7-2 to Normandale. The Blue Devils scored three points and finished ninth out of twelve teams in the MCCAA State Tournament. Picking up wins were Karl Hedin and Scott Meeker in singles and the doubles team of Hedin and Meker in the first round match. In singles, Jeff Haukum, Brian Slowinski, Kevin Sutter and Mark Hinks all lost first round matches. Austin other doubles teams of Haukum-Hinks and Slowinski-Sutter also lost in the first round. TENNIS, Women s Coach Vel Moen 5-3 ACC returns three players (Lois Gutz, Cindy Perkins, and Brenda Hueman) and Coach Vel Moen feels her team has good balance. The Lady Blue Devils opened the season with a 5-1 in over Willmar. Only singles matches were played due to rain. After Gutz lost at #1 singles, Perkins, Jill Hoffman, Hueman, Sue Harpuder, and Sheri Westphal all were victorious. ACC defeated Bethany 8-1 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Austin recorded its first lost as Anoka Ramsey handled ACC 8-1 and saw its record drop to.500 losing to Rochester 5-1 in a rain shortened match. After dropping two in a row, ACC rebounded and defeated Bethany 7-2. They lost their next match before defeating Inver Hills. In their final season match, ACC beat Normandale 5-4. Hueman, Harpuder, and Patti Stillwell won in singles. The victory by Brenda Hueman upped her record in singles to 7-1. The doubles teams of Perkins-Hoffman and Harpuder-Hueman were winners.

10 The ACC women s tennis team scored nine points and placed fifth out of 13 teams in the MCWAA State tournament. Cindy Perkins had the best tourney performance advancing all the way to the #2 singles championship. Perkins lost 6-2, 6-1 in the finals. Brenda Hueman and Sue Harpuder each lost in the semifinal round. Gutz, Stillwell and Hoffman all lost in their first match. Austin s only double competition came from the #3 team of Terri Hermes and Stilwell, who won their first match but dropped their next. Members : Lois Gutz, Susan Harpuder, Terri Hermes.
