Scouting Drake - The Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 23 in the College Soccer News poll and receiving votes in the NSCAA poll, enter Sunday s match with a overall record after beating Oral Roberts, 4-0, on Friday night in the Holiday Inn at the Plaza UMKC Invitational. DU s lone losses on the year came against No. 22 Michigan (2-1) and vs. Memphis (4-3). Drake is averaging 2.33 goals per game, as the squad has already netted 14 goals through six contests on the year. Six Bulldog players have scored at least two goals with Garrett Webb pacing the team with three strikes, including one game-winning goal. Defensively, Michael Drozd has played all but 26 minutes in goal for Drake. The GK has a 1.21 goals against average with nine saves. Additionally, Drozd has a pair of shutouts (vs. ORU, vs. Marquette) on the season. The Series - Drake leads the all-time series over UMKC by the count of The Roos, however, have either won or tied the last three meetings in the series, which includes a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs last year at Bourke Field in Kansas City. In the game, UMKC s Bryan Perez posted the fifth hat trick in school history in leading the Roos to the victory Last Match - The Roos dropped a 1-0 double overtime decision to Loyola Chicago on Friday night at Durwood Stadium. After playing to a scoreless tie for the first 102 minutes, the Ramblers caught a break in the 103rd minute when a blocked ball ricocheted off a UMKC defender into the back of the net to give LUC the victory. Under his guidance, UMKC has captured three Summit League regular season soccer titles and has made three appearances in the NCAA College Cup with the most recent appearance coming in Benben, the fourth head coach in the Division I era, begins the 2009 season with 83 wins to his credit, and he has had more than 40 players named to the all-league teams and nine to all-region squads. In 2008, Benben guided the Roos to 10 victories, which were the most for the program since The double-digit win campaign was the fourth during his tenure in Kansas City and just the sixth in school history. UMKC received national recognition in 08, as the squad posted a 1-0 victory at No. 3 Creighton in September. The win helped the Roos finish the year with a solid record against ranked foes. Benben coached two players to NSCAA all-region Second Team honors in 2008 in Brian Harris and Bryan Perez. It was the second straight year that Perez had garnered all-region recognition under Benben s watch. Harris, meanwhile, earned Summit League praise, when he became UMKC s first player to garner Offensive Player of the Year honors. Benben qualified for The Summit League Championships for the third consecutive year and for the 10th time in his tenure in 2008, where he then guided the Roos to their third all-time Summit League Tournament title. Benben has claimed three Coach of the Year honors in during his 11-year tenure with the most recent accolade coming on the heels of the 2003 campaign. The Kangaroos finished the season with a overall record (5-1-0 conference) and an appearance in the NCAA College Cup. The squad captured the first league double in school history as they finished atop the regular season table before capturing the conference tournament championship. In 2001, Benben earned the Mid-Con Coach of the Year honors after guiding his team to the best season in UMKC s Division I history, putting together a overall record and winning the first league tournament championship in school history. With their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Blue-and-Gold picked up the only NCAA Tournament win for any team sport, knocking off UW-Milwaukee in the first round by a 2-1 overtime scoreline. With his success on the field, the Kangaroos were recognized for their achievements. Larry Scheller was named the Mid-Con Player of the Year to go along with honorable mention College Soccer News all-america honors. Scheller still is the only player in school history to receive all-america accolades. Benben received his first Coach of the Year nod in his second season on the sidelines for the Roos after he guided the squad to an record. Under his direction, Erik Kuster netted nine goals to earn the Mid-Con Player of the Year accolade. In addition to his success on the field, the Roos have been honored for their work in the classroom under Benben s tutelage. Garret Guthrie earned ESPN The Magazine Third Team Academic all-america honors and was a finalist for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award, while Brian Harris was a NSCAA College Scholar all- American. In addition, the Roos have had 10 academic all-region honors during Benben s tenure. In addition to his success with UMKC, Benben has a storied soccer career. As a player at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, he was a three-year letterwinner at goalkeeper, backstopping the squad to a national championship in Benben became an assistant coach at SIU-E after his graduation in 1973, helping to lead the team to another national championship in In 2008, Benben was recognized by his alma mater for his athletic achievements, as he was selected to the school s Hall of Fame. In 1982, Benben joined the professional ranks, as he became assistant coach and director of player personnel for the Kansas City Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He was then named head coach of the Comets in 1984, midway through the season. His squad recovered to finish fourth in the Western Division, falling in a five-game playoff series to the St. Louis Steamers. During his tenure with the Comets, he missed the playoffs just once, during the season, his final full season with the team. Since 1987, he has been the director of Rick Benben Soccer Camps in Lenexa, Kan., helping to educate young elite-level soccer players during the summer. He received his bachelor s degree in physical education and health in 1973 and a master s degree in education administration and supervision in 1976, both from SIU-E. Benben and his wife, Meg, have three children: Matt, Rachel and Andrea. The Benbens reside in Lenexa, Kan.

3 Cooper Sets A Career-High With 11 Saves Against LUC - Junior Ken Cooper finished with a careerhigh 11 saves on Friday night against Loyola Chicago. It is the first time in his collegiate career that Cooper has posted 10 or more saves in a single game. Additionally, the 11 saves are tied for the sixth most in a single match in UMKC history. Cooper s previous career-best came in backto-back matches in 08 when he had nine saves against Western Illinois (11/14) and at Tulsa (11/21). Sarabia Named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week - Freshman David Sarabia was named The Summit League Offensive Player of the Week after being named the MVP of the UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic. The forward netted a hat trick in UMKC s 3-1 win over Memphis, becoming the first freshman and youngest player and just the seventh Roo to accomplish the feat. Roos Claim Team Title At UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic - UMKC was crowned the team champion of the UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic based on final goal differential as all four teams in the field finished with 1-1 records. Freshman David Sarabia was named the MVP of the tournament, while teammates Jimmy Simon, Bryan Perez and Chris Markey joined him on the all-tournament team. Three Hat Tricks In One Calendar Year - UMKC tallied its third hat trick in the last calendar year when David Sarabia accomplished the feat in the 3-1 win over Memphis on Sept. 11. Sarabia joins current teammate Bryan Perez in the hat trick club, as Perez netted three goals in the 4-3 win over Drake on Sept. 30, Former Roo Brian Harris, meanwhile, scored his HT on Oct. 25, 2008, in the victory over Oral Roberts. UMKC In The NCAA Statistics: Individuals Sarabia - 20th - points per game (2.0) Sarabia - 7th - goals per game (1.0) Simon - t72nd - assists per game (.5) Sosa - t72nd - assists per game (.5) Team 71st - scoring offense (1.5) Offensive Dynamite - The Roos rank second in The Summit League in goals (6), points (17) and assists (5), while leading the league in goals per game (1.5) and assists per game (1.25). This is despite playing one fewer contest than the league leader IPFW. Individually, David Sarabia is leading the league in points (6), goals (3), points per game (2.0) and goals per game (1.0). Jimmy Simon and John Bayron Sosa, meanwhile, are tied for the league lead win assists (2). The Countdown - With his two goals this season, senior Bryan Perez is just one goal shy of tying and two goals shy of breaking the UMKC school record for career goals. The Miami native netted his 20th goal on Sept. 5 at Missouri State. Former Roo Drew Perkins, who played for UMKC from , currently holds the record with 21 career strikes. The midfielder, who is tied for the league lead with two assists, assisted on Bryan Perez s strike to move him into third place in the UMKC record books for career assists. The St. Cloud, Fla., native now has 12 assists in Blue and Gold. Cooper Among UMKC Career Leaders - Junior Ken Cooper already ranks as one of the best goalkeepers in UMKC history when you look at his career statistics. The Roos received four of the seven first place votes en route to 34 points. Oakland received the three other first place tallies to finish second in the voting with 31 points. WOW! What A Crowd - The Roos played in front of a school record crowd of 1,241 fans on Aug. 23 at Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field. The total is the largest crowd to watch a home match in school history and is believed to be one of the top-10 largest home crowds in Summit League history. Championship Soccer - UMKC earned its third NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008 after winning The Summit League Tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Roos have won three Summit League regular season titles (1999, 2001, 2003) and three league tournament crowns (2001, 2003, 2008), all of which led to NCAA Tournament appearances. Mr. Versatility - After making three appearances in goal during the exhibition season, freshman David Sarabia made his official collegiate debut in a different role on Sept. 5 at Missouri State. The Miami, Fla., native got the start at the forward position. The move didn t come out of the blue, as Sarabia was a prolific goal scorer as a prep, as he holds the Florida Christian High School record with 30 career strikes. Perez Returns For Senior Season - Senior Bryan Perez returns to lead the Roos after earning NSCAA Second Team all-region honors in It was his second all-region accolade, as he was a third team selection as a sophomore in Perez, who is the top returning goal and point scorer in The Summit League, finished the 2008 campaign with 10 goals and a total of 26 points. The 10 goals were the fifth most in a single season in school history, while the 26 points were second most all-time. A Stout Defense - The Kangaroos return four players that saw extensive playing time in 08 to hold down the defender position. Senior John David Hernandez along with juniors Matt Kopsky, Brian Quintana and Chris Markey all return as upperclassmen to anchor down the defense. The quartet helped goalkeeper Ken Cooper post five shutouts during the 2008 season. Coop In Goal - Two-year starter Ken Cooper returns for his junior season as the incumbent goalkeeper for the Roos. The St. Louis native tied for the second most wins in a single season in school history when he posted a overall record with five shutouts. The five shutouts are the second most in a single season in school history. Transfers Return Home - The Kangaroos added two players Division I players when they transferred closer to home. Forward Jimmy Simon (Leavenworth, Kan.) and Tyler Schwab (Leawood, Kan.) returned to Kansas City after starting their careers at Rutgers and Marquette, respectively. Men s Soccer On Metro Sports - The Roos will have a home match broadcast on Metro Sports later this season at Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field. The Oct. 27 match against Baker will be aired live. It is the first match to be televised since Oct. 18, 2005, against Drake, which was played at the Blue Valley District Athletics Complex. An International Flavor - Coach Benben and Coach Schlichting hit the recruiting trail hard following the 2008 season. The duo landed a nine player recruiting class that features three international players. Joe McGuinness and Tom Black join the Roos from England, while Luke Harman comes to Kansas City from Ireland. UMKC now has a total of six international student-athletes (McGuinness, Black, Harman, Andy Fleischhacker, Diego Rojas and Ricardo Guerra) on its 2009 roster. Benben-Schlichting Coaching Duo Back For 12th Season - The Roos will be led by head coach Rick Benben and associate head coach Fred Schlichting for the 12th straight season in The duo has been a part of 84 wins (7.5 p/season) during their time at UMKC. Former Wizard Joins UMKC Coaching Staff - Former Kansas City Wizard player Brian Roberts joined the UMKC coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach. Roberts, who has coached the last three years with the KC Legends soccer program, played three seasons with the Wizards as both a reserve and first team player. Before going pro, Roberts played collegiately at Yale, where he was a four-time all-ivy League selection and a two-time all-new England honoree. The New Digs - The Roos will be playing the 2009 season in the new Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field, which opened in Aug The $9 million dollar facility, which will be one of the premier stadium s in the Midwest, was made possible by a $5 million gift by the Stanley H.
