Game #25 Colgate Puts Three-Game Win Streak On Line; Raiders Travel To Bucknell For Key PL Game THE MATCHUP The Colgate University basketball team (15-9 overall, 6-5 Patriot League) will attempt to extend its winning streak, when the Raiders travel to Lewisburg, Penn. on Saturday for a Patriot League battle with the Bucknell Bison (10-14, 6-5). Tip-off is 3:15 p.m. at Davis Gym. The Raiders have won three straight and six of their last seven games to jump into a three-way tie for third place in the Patriot League standings with Bucknell and Lafayette. Bucknell had a two-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night by league-leader American University. With only three games left in the regular season every game is almost a must win situation in the battle for a top seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland on March 2-3. The winner of the Patriot League Championship on March 8 will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This is the 76th meeting between Colgate and Bucknell with the Bison leading the overall series, Earlier this season, the Bison defeated Colgate, 80-75, at Cotterell Court. Bucknell has won three straight against the Raiders including three straight at Davis Gym. Saturday s game will be the final game played in historic Davis Gym with Bucknell s new facility opening next season. (continued on next page) WILLIAMS NAMED PATRIOT LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Colgate freshman Keith Williams (Harlem, N.Y.) has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Raiders victories over Lehigh and Holy Cross. He is just the fourth player to win the award this season. The 6-foot-4, 172-pound swingman scored the game-winning basket in Colgate s victory over Holy Cross. With 4.9 seconds remaining, Williams nailed a 3-pointer from the corner to give Colgate a lead. Earlier in the week, Williams grabbed a season-high six rebounds in the victory over Lehigh. 2 Senior Pat Campolieta, the first player in school history to rank in the Top 10 in career scoring (1,562), rebounding (660), assists (235) and steals (178), continues to lead Colgate in scoring and rebounding. He is averaging 15.0 points per game and 6.8 caroms per outing, which is good for fourth place in Patriot League scoring and second in rebounding. Campolieta is currently fifth in career scoring and eighth in rebounding for the Raiders. He needs 30 points to move into fourth place in scoring. Sophomore Mark Linebaugh, one of the hottest scorers in the league over the past two weeks, is second in scoring with 13.3 points. He has been in double figures in nine straight games. Howard Blue is third with 10.7 points per game, followed by Tim Sullivan with 8.5 ppg and Dave Hardy 8.3 ppg. BUCKNELL (Hamilton, N.Y. - Jan. 23, 2002) - Boakai Lalugba scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Bucknell downed Colgate at Cotterell Court in a Patriot League game. Bucknell has beaten Colgate in seven of the last eight meetings. Also in double figures for the Bison were Dan Blankenship with 14, Bryan Bailey with 13 and Matt Quinn, who netted 10. Mark Linebaugh and Pat Campolieta paced the Raiders with 14 points apiece. Campolieta also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, giving him his fourth double-double of the season. Martin Marek added 10 points for Colgate. The Bison claimed their first lead of the contest at with 11:11 to go in the first half and never trailed again. They led by as many as 15 late in the contest before the Raiders had a desperation comeback on two three-pointers by Linebaugh to pull Colgate to within five points in the final minute of the game. Bucknell finished the game shooting 54 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc, while Colgate shot 42 percent from the field goal but only 20 percent from 3-point range (4-of-20). After 11-straight setbacks against Navy, senior guard Bill Kern nailed two free throws with 28 seconds remaining to lift Colgate to a come-from-behind win over the Midshipmen at Alumni Hall. The victory gave coach Emmett Davis his first win over his former team after eight losses. It also assured Colgate of its first winning season since the campaign. After Kern s two free throws, his only points of the game, Navy had three chances to win the contest. The first two Navy chances saw the Mids come up with an offensive rebound off a missed attempt, and then with three seconds remaining Colgate s Dave Hardy stole the ball from Jason Jeanpierre to seal the victory. Pat Campolieta finished with 14 points for the Raiders, while Hardy scored 11 points and Mark Linebaugh nailed 10 points. Howard Blue added nine points and seven rebounds for Colgate. Jeanpierre and Demond Shepard led Navy with 14 points apiece. Navy opened the contest with a 4-0 lead before Colgate went on a 16-7 run for a five-point advantage. The Mids battled back to tie the game but the Raiders answered the challenge with a 10-2 run for a lead with 4:30 left in the first half. Colgate maintained its eight-point margin at halftime, In the second half, Colgate jumped out to a nine-point lead before Navy came roaring back outscoring the Raiders 20-6 for a lead with 8:02 remaining. Colgate again answered the challenge fighting back with an 11-1 run and a five-point lead, The Mids once again retook the lead with six straight points, 65-64, with 2:29 left setting the stage for Kern s game-clinching free throws. COLGATE HEAD COACH Colgate head coach Emmett Davis is in his fourth season with the Raiders. Senior Chris Brown scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead New Hampshire to a upset win over Colgate at Lundholm Gymnasium. The Wildcats snapped a four-game losing streak, while Colgate was held to its second lowest output of the season. Also in double figures for UNH was Austin Ganly with 17 points, while Allen Gould netted 13 and Brady Catlett scored 10. Matt Shirley scored a career-high 10 points for Colgate, while Dave Hardy also tallied 10 to lead Colgate. In the first half, Colgate opened an eight point lead with 6:58 remaining before UNH closed with a 15-6 run to lead at halftime, Colgate rallied in the second half for a lead with 13:20 remaining but UNH scored 12 of the next 14 points to take an eight-point advantage, Colgate scored the next six points to trail by two points but that was as close as they would come to the Wildcats. Colgate was outrebounded badly by UNH, 53-39, with the Wildcats holding an 18-7 advantage on the offensive glass. Pat Campolieta, Colgate s leading scorer was held to eight points, before fouling out with 1:57 left. He was the Raiders leading rebounder with 10 while Shirley and Howard Blue grabbed six apiece. The Raiders shot poorly from 3-point range making only 2-of-16 chances and UNH had 20 second chance points compared to Colgate s eight.
