Continue straight off the exit ramp onto Morrissey Boulevard for approximately one mile. Turn right into the campus and follow the driveway to the parking areas. From the North Interstate 93 South (Southeast Expressway) to exit 15, Columbia Road/JFK Library/UMass. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp and proceed towards the rotary. 4 COACHING STAFF CHARLIE TITUS Head Coach Saint Michael s s nd Season One of the most respected names in college athletics in the Northeast, Charlie Titus begins his 32nd year as the head men s basketball coach at UMass Boston Following a year away from the sideline, Titus came back to lead UMass Boston to it s first Little East Conference championship in to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament for the second time in school history. The Beacons win total of 18 was their secondhighest in the program s history and for his efforts, Titus was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches Northeast Region Coach of the Year to go along with the Little East Conference Coach of the Year honor he had received weeks earlier. Titus has overseen the Beacon basketball program from its days as a club-varsity sport in He took one-year leaves of absence from his coaching duties in 1980, upon being named UMass Boston s director of athletics, and returned to the hardwood in 1981 for the Beacons second season at the varsity level, and in 2004 when he assumed duties as Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and was recently named Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreation. He earned his 300th combined club and varsity victory in the season, and now owns a career mark of The UMB mentor wasted little time in bringing UMass Boston to the national spotlight once the program assumed full varsity status. In just his second year at the varsity level, Titus led the Beacons to a 19-9 record and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Titus and UMass Boston returned to the post-season in the season as the Beacons tied a school record for wins and reached the championship game of the ECAC New England tournament, upsetting top-seeded Bowdoin in the process. Titus was named Little East Conference Coach of the Year in that season, in which UMass Boston narrowly missed out on a return to the NCAA tournament. He was instrumental in the formation and development of the Little East Conference, which has evolved into one of the nation s premier basketball alliances at the Division III level. He also served as chairman of the ECAC New England Division III tournament Committee and has been a member of the NCAA Division III tournament committee. Not only active in the development of his players, Titus also has seen a number of his past assistant coaches move on to top basketball programs including UMass Amherst, Northeastern, University of New Hampshire, Boston University, Delaware, St. Michael s, Union, Hartwick, Ben Franklin Institute, Genessee Community College, North Shore Community College, as well as South Boston, Boston Technical, Burke, O Bryant, Weymouth, Hull, East Boston, Boston College High and Madison Park at the high school level. In addition to his commitment to basketball and UMass Boston as a coach and administrator, Titus tirelessly directs his energy into the Boston community. Still active with youth programs, Titus serves on the board of directors for several organizations, including the Bay State Games. Titus is also active within the NCAA as a member of the Division III Membership committee and serves as the Chairman of the ECAC Basketball Officiating committee. In past years, Titus served on a pair of the Governors Advisory Committees as well as the Roxbury Community College Advisory Board and has also assumed the role of Associate Commissioner for the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. In the summer of 1997, Titus visited Niamey, Niger, on the western coast of Africa, as part of Niamey Hoops, an international basketball clinic for players and coaches and has been an integral part of the YES Africa project over the past four summers in West Africa to promote and teach the game of basketball. Titus efforts as UMass Boston s director of athletics have yielded numerous awards from the local community. He has been recognized as a member of the Ten Outstanding Young Leaders of Greater Boston and accepted the Judge Harry Elam Award and the Boston Parks and Recreation Award, all honoring his service to youth in Boston. In 1999 the former standout at Saint Michael s College was inducted into the institution s Athletic Hall of Fame and was recently enshrined into UMass Boston s Hall of Fame in In 2002, Titus was appointed to the selection committee for the newly created New England Basketball Hall of Fame. A high school standout in basketball at Boston Technical, Titus went on to play for three years at St. Michael s College before graduating in He currently is a member of the Board of Trustees at St. Michael s as well as the Urban College of Boston. Titus lives in Roxbury, MA, with his wife, Paula, and two children, Andre and Ciaren. 5 COACHING STAFF LANCE TUCKER Associate Head Coach RODNEY HUGHES Assistant Coach Tucker returns to the UMass Boston basketball staff for his third year. He enjoyed an enormously successful first campaign with the Beacons in and assumed the role of Associate Head Coach last season. The Roxbury resident has a great role in daily practice in terms of preparation and on-court teaching on Titus staff. Prior to his arrival at the Harbor Campus, Tucker coached basketball for over 25 years with great success. He enjoyed 20 years as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Brookline High School from , where he led the Warriors to six Bay State League titles, including five South Sectional final appearances and a pair of Eastern Massachusetts Division 1 South Championships. Tucker's success did not gone unnoticed as evidenced by being named the NABC High School Division 1 South Coach of the Year on three occasions. Following his tremendous success at the prep level, Tucker took his teachings to the college level where he helped build the men's basketball program at Emmanuel College in He spent three years with the Saints where, over the course of his tenure, the team made a 180% improvement in wins, while guiding them to an improved record each season, including three Great Northeast Athletic Conference playoff appearances. As a player, Tucker was a four-year letterwinner for Boston University, where he captained the Terriers as a senior and helped them to an NCAA tournament berth. Tucker earned a degree in physical education as well as a masters degree in education from BU. JIM HAYES Assistant Coach Rodney Hughes will return to the Beacons bench for his 30th season as an assistant, after serving as Interim Head Coach in Hughes joined the basketball staff in 1977, while basketball was still a club-varsity program, and has been with the program through it s first 27 years as a varsity sport. Hughes is a well-known figure in basketball circles, having coached in a number of different organizations in the Boston area. He has coached in the Boston Neighborhood Basketball League and has guided players from Russia and Lithuania while coaching for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club. Along with his coaching and supervising roles, Hughes is also involved in national basketball organizations. A member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Hughes was appointed to that organization s Assistant Coaches Committee in The Dorchester native is the only representative from Division III who serves on the 16-member committee. Hughes has been a member of the International Association of Basketball Officials for over 30 years and, in 1999, he was inducted into the organization s hall of fame. A 1968 graduate of Boston Trade High School, he has served as Assistant Director of Athletics, Community Affairs at UMass Boston for the past eight years and is also the project administrator for the National Youth Sports Program, sponsored by the NCAA. The camp is offered at no charge to more than 500 children in the greater Boston area each summer. ERIC SUMMERVILLE Assistant Coach Jim Hayes returns to the UMass Boston basketball coaching staff for his second season. A 1995 graduate of Boston University, Hayes is responsible for all of the Beacons advance scouting, film exchange and helps with game preparation. Hayes, earned a Master s degree in business from Suffolk University and currently resides in Dorchester. Eric Summerville returns for his second season as an Assistant Coach for the Beacons. The former guard was a four-year standout for UMass Boston from and ranks 14th on the school s all-time scoring list with 879 points and stands fifth with 263 assists, sixth with 92 career threepointers made and ninth with 136 steals. He was named UMB s MVP as a junior and a captain for his senior campaign. The Arkansas native was also named the Beacons Most Dedicated Player as a freshman and graduated in 2006 with a degree in African-American studies from UMass Boston UMass Boston 3

6 SEASON PREVIEW The Beacons enter the season with some potent weapons as part of a very athletic group, but will be without one of the greatest players to don a uniform at UMass Boston. Despite the loss of a former Little East Conference Player of the Year, the Beacons return a senior point guard and a pair of senior front court players, who have all been through the rigors of the LEC as well as a trip to the NCAA tournament in UMass Boston will rely on its second-year players to apply their experience from a year ago in their quest to become regular contributors this season as well as a crop of newcomers that will look to make a significant impact. Backcourt The backcourt will be led by an experienced point guard and will feature the promise of some intriguing potential from a trio of sophomores as well as a group of newcomers. Senior floor general A.J. Titus (Roxbury, MA) enters his final season for the Beacons and his third as a starter and should provide invaluable leadership. He s a good passer and a physically strong guard with great basketball knowledge. Titus averaged 2.8 assists and improved his shooting from a year ago with a 43% (55-129) showing from the field and a.703 (45-64) mark from the free throw line. Sophomore shooting guard Anthony Matlock (Seattle, WA) will provide UMass Boston with its main outside shooting threat and is a tremendous three-point shooter as evidenced by his 38% (29-77) success rate from beyond the arc to rank second on the team a year ago. He started 12 of 24 contests that he saw action in and showed great potential, netting doubledigits in five outings and averaged 4.8 points per game in 14.4 minutes during the season. Classmate Aaron Jones (Boston, MA) will compete for time at the point after playing in all but one game last year. He has excellent athleticsm and quickness and defends very well and should see increased time this season. Sophomore Robert Zotti (North Providence, RI) will also vie for time in the backcourt after seeing action in 16 games last year. He s very quick and athletic and will look to gain more valuable experience. Freshman Anthony Brewster (Boston, MA) could see action in both the front and backcourt spots. He s a very good defender and knows the game and will look for time coming off the bench, while freshman Gaelen McGrail (Belmont, MA) will push for time at the point guard position. He s a hard worker, who s coming off a knee injury and should get better as the season goes on. Freshman Giorgios Hologitas (Rockland, MA) is a slasher, who can play multiple positions off the bench and should provide energy and defensive intensity. Freshmen Marc Borgellas, Jr. (Boston, MA) and James Alcide (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) both have a strong work ethic, but will need more experience to gain more playing time as the season progresses and should provide solid depth at the guard position. Frontcourt The Beacons lack size in the front court, but has some outstanding talent in the blocks, led by a Little East Conference First Team All-Star and a senior entering his fourth year as a starter. UMB will rely on big contributions from its young players as well. Senior Amigo Paniagua (Santiago, DR) returns for the final season as, arguably, one of the best all-around players in school history. The forward Sophomore guard Aaron Jones is one of the was named a First Team LEC All-Star for the Beacons most improved players from a year ago. second straight season a year ago and should UMass Boston be the Beacons go-to-guy on the offensive end. He can score in the post as well as from the outside and averaged 14.8 points and seven rebounds last season to rank fifth in the league and dished for 2.7 assists as well. Senior Mark Doran (South Boston, MA) has battled for the past three years for UMass Boston and adds toughness and intensity as well as good rebounding skills. He s served as a starter since his rookie season and should start again this year after averaging 6.2 points and 4.0 rebounds in 20.9 minutes per game last season. Sophomore Terrell Maddox (Hyannis, MA) saw limited action last season, but has Sophomore post-player Terrell Maddox should see increased time this season in the frontcourt. good offensive skills and should pose problems for defenders in the post with an array of moves. He should see time at both power forward and center after getting time in 20 games last season. Sophomore Ernst Jean (Malden, MA) transfers to UMass Boston from Bunker Hill Community College and has good athleticsm and is a good low post defender. His imposing presence should make him an effective player at both the power forward and center positions, while classmate Kenneth Hite, Jr. (Dorchester, MA) will look to provide a defensive spark off the bench. He s very athletic and quick and can play multiple positions to add to the Beacons depth in the front court.

20 UMass Boston THE LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE The Little East Conference was formed in However, the seed for the conference was planted in 1984 in a meeting held at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The underlying concern of the group was to form a basketballplaying conference with a long-range goal of securing automatic bids to the NCAA Division III men s and women s basketball championships. After a second meeting, invitations were extended to those institutions with interest in joining a conference. Eastern Connecticut State University, University of Massachusetts Boston, Plymouth State College, Rhode Island College, Southeastern Massachusetts University (now known as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth) and the University of Southern Maine joined as charter members to form the Little East Conference. Western Connecticut State University was accepted into the conference in the fall of 1991, and Keene State College joined the league for the season. Following the NCAA s mandatory two-year waiting period, the Little East Conference was awarded an automatic bid to the Division III men s and women s basketball championships for the season. The Little East Conference s success against non-conference competition in both regular-season and post-season play was a major factor in its being accorded automatic qualification so quickly. The conference s representatives to the NCAA tournaments are determined via the annual post-season conference tournament, to which each league team qualifies. Since its formation, the Little East has seen its members ranked number one in national pre-season men s polls, reach the NCAA Women s Final Four and the NCAA Men s Final Four. Both the men s and women s squads have sent at least two teams to the NCAA tournament in three of the last nine years as well. Sports Medicine Quite simply, the sports medicine center at UMass Boston is one of the best in the area. It combines the best facility with the best people -- all with the goal of keeping Beacon student-athletes healthy. The sports medicine room falls under the direction of head athletic trainer Ed Perkins, a UMass Boston graduate and former athlete with the Beacons. Before taking over at UMB, Ed worked with the nationally ranked men s basketball team at Temple University before returning to Division III athletics at MIT and at Bridgewater State College. Shannon Soares, a certified athletic trainer in her own right, is the university s assistant athletic trainer. Shannon s credentials include a stint with Dennis-Yarmouth High School as its head athletic trainer and two summers working with top major league baseball prospects in the prestigious Cape Cod League. What that means to you is that when you become a member of the Beacons, you are in the safest environment possible. Whether it be injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, or rehabilitation, the training staff at UMass Boston is looking out for you. Before you are eligible for competition, you will be required to undergo a thorough physical examination. You will be monitored throughout the training phase and competitive season. And the training staff works closely with your head coach to make your participation in Beacon athletics as safe as it can be. To ensure quality individual care, the training staff regularly acquires the latest and most effective modalities. The sports medicine center at UMass Boston is equipped with a four-channel electrical stimulation with combination ultrasound unit, a paraffin bath, two hydrocollator units, a Jobst compression unit and a whirlpool bath. Strength & Conditioning The University of Massachusetts Boston is one of the few NCAA III schools in the country to offer a year round strength and conditioning program. The varsity weight room is designed to improve all areas of athletic performance for all sports. The strength and conditioning coach is a certified professional. The focus is to educate and train athletes on how to properly execute exercises that will allow them to be more efficient with the sports specific movements and enable them to participate with a reduced chance of injury. 34 CLARK ATHLETIC CENTER The student athlete at UMass Boston has a wealth of athletic and recreational facilities available within the confines of the Clark Athletic Center. The athletic center has served as the home of the Beacon basketball program since its completion in Named for Catherine Forbes Clark, a former trustee of the University of Massachusetts system and prominent Dorchester civic leader, the Clark Athletic Center emulates its namesake by serving the University community as well as area residents throughout the year. Considered one of the finest athletic and recreational facilities in Greater Boston, the complex accommodates the school s 16 intercollegiate sports and extensive intramural program. The Center s building houses a main gymnasium, which includes a 3,500-seat basketball arena along with three auxiliary basketball courts and two volleyball courts, a 1,000-seat ice rink, and an Olympic-size swimming pool with a high-dive area, six 25- yard lanes and an observation deck. A weight room, creative and combative rooms and a sports medicine area round out the interior of the structure. Outside the building, UMass Boston boasts an eight-lane 400-meter track, eight tennis courts, a softball diamond and two multipurpose fields primarily used for soccer and lacrosse. The outdoor facilities also include a boathouse and dock for the sailing program as well as several recreational fields. UMass Boston hosts the National Youth Sports Program, an NCAAsponsored summer camp for inner-city youth, as well as the Dana Barros Basketball Camp, the All Dorchester Sports League, the Boston Youth Games, the Boston Housing Authority Jamboree, the Bay State Games and MIAA state tournament games in soccer, ice hockey and basketball. The athletic center became the new home of the Boston Shootout, the premier high school basketball tournament in the nation, in 1997 and has served as a workout facility for the Boston Celtics and the 2000 McDonald s All- American High School Basketball team, while also serving as the site of the Sprite Slam Jam. During the summer of 1999, the center began hosting the Shaw s Summer Pro League, featuring current and future stars of the NBA. The center also hosts the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs during the NBA season, serving as a practice site for both of those teams on their visits to Boston. The Clark Athletic Center saw its most excitement for 2000 in just one night when on October 3rd, the University hosted the first United States Presidential Debate of When the parties finally agreed to the Boston debate, the event was suddenly only two weeks away. In that time frame the Clark Athletic Center had to be converted into a debate hall and the adjacent hockey rink into a media center, replete with red carpet, approximately 700 phones, more than 70 televisions, and accommodations for almost 1,600 media representatives from around the world. The complex has also doubled as a concert venue, hosting multiple-grammy winning artist Kanye West in 2006 as well as the O Jays and Common in UMass Boston also boasts one of the finest personal fitness facilities in the area in the Beacon Fitness Center. The state-of-the-art recreational area provides students, faculty and staff with modern equipment in a clean environment. The fitness center offers cardiovascular machines, nautilus and free weights, squash and racquetball courts, a walking track and aerobics. In addition to extensive use by the intercollegiate and intramural programs, the Clark Athletic Center serves as the site for numerous community activities. Included in the list of community activities are a variety of events for both youth and the physically challenged UMass Boston

35 UMB I UMB IN THE COMMUNITY Intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and recreation for students, staff and faculty are the primary programs of the UMass Boston Department of Athletics. The department offers 14 varsity sports and is a member of the NCAA s Division III. UMass Boston has teams competing in the ECAC, the Little East Conference and ECAC East Ice Hockey. Ninetythree Beacons in seven sports have been named All-Americans. The women s indoor and outdoor track and field teams had an outstanding record of achievement, including four NCAA Team Championships and 37 individual NCAA Championships. But the Department of Athletics has another important concern as well--service to the community. Whether it s complimentary use of the University s athletic facilities, coaches and student athletes sports clinics for youth groups, or holiday visits to area hospitals, UMass Boston Athletics is in the forefront of serving area neighborhoods and communities throughout the state. More than 150 school, charitable, government and private organizations use UMass Boston athletic facilities each year at little or no cost. Over 2,500 people visit our athletic facilities each year, as participants or spectators. UMass Boston s indoor and outdoor athletic facilities are in use by visitors for over 2100 hours each year. In 2005 the National Consortium for Academics and Sports named the Department of Athletics at UMass Boston as # 1 in the country for Community Service for the eighth straight year. UMass Boston was named Honorable Mention by the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators/Jostens in the category of An Array of Projects or Activities in UMass Boston is in a unique position as the only public university in the City of Boston. 36 OPPORTUNITIES FOR ATHLETES As a student athlete at UMass Boston you will have unique opportunities to represent the University on a national level and in national programs. NCAA CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS The school year marked the department s first year as a member of the NCAA s CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Presently, 323 institutions and six conference offices now participate in this NCAA supported life skills program. The NCAA mission of CHAMPS/Life Skills is committed to a comprehensive program that provides educational experience and services in order to develop well balanced lifestyles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program will be presented this year at UMB through the development of workshops/guest speakers that address identified life skill needs in the five commitment areas of this program. As part of our membership in CHAMPS/Life Skills, each year one of four student athlete nominees will attend the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference. SAAC MEMBERS STUDENT ATHLETE ADVISORY COUNCIL The Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is comprised of student athlete representatives from each of UMass Boston s teams. The purpose of the organization is to promote all UMB sports and provide student athletes an opportunity to impact those issues that affect their daily lives. SAAC is the student athlete s voice and their vehicle to implement new ideas and influence positive change to enhance the studentathlete experience at UMass Boston. Members of each team will nominate and select an eligible student athlete to represent their sport on the SAAC. An alternate will also be selected, in the event that the designated representative cannot attend a meeting. It is expected that each team will be represented at every scheduled meeting/event. Throughout the year, student athletes are encouraged to communicate ideas and concerns to the respective representative of their sport. 38 Retired Number The first UMass Boston athlete to have their jersey number retired, John Boo Rice finished his career with the Beacons as one of the best NCAA Division III players in the city s history. In 2003, he was selected as a member of UMass Boston s Inaugural Hall of Fame Class. Rice began his playing career at Boston State College, and by the end of his junior year, was recognized by many as the best point guard in New England at any level of college basketball. Following the merger of Boston State with University of Massachusetts Boston, Rice was able to finish his senior year in a Beacon uniform Nickname Rice scored a team-high 515 points for the Beacons in the season, and led UMass Boston to its first NCAA tournament appearance. Rice was a two-time All-MASCAC selection while at Boston State and earned All-New England honors in his year with the Beacons. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics following his collegiate career and is currently the highly successful head coach of girls basketball at Jeremiah E. Burke High School UMass Boston BEACON TRADITION Nickname and Colors Looking to establish an identity for UMass Boston s athletic program, the athletic department staff selected Beacons as the University nickname, and royal blue and white as the school colors in the mid-1970s. The nickname was chosen because UMass Boston sits on Boston Harbor, where lighthouses dot the coastline. The most renowned lighthouse in Boston Harbor, or the rest of the country for that matter, is Boston Light. Located at the entrance to the harbor, the structure has guided ships to safe harbor since first illuminating its beacon in The British destroyed Boston Light in 1776, but Governor John Hancock had the lighthouse rebuilt in On September 23, 2002, UMass Boston introduced a new Beacon and changed its colors to Beacon Blue, Black and White. History of the Beacon Seeing the light For centuries, beacons have guided ships in the most perilous waters to safety. Quite often, a Beacon was the only light sailors could see in the black of night. The light was reassuring. Hopeful. Sustaining. It helped ships stay the course. A beacon of light has since become synonymous with any source of guidance and inspiration. The word beacon became part of the heritage of the City of Boston in the 1780 s, when a beacon stood on what is now called Beacon Hill. Today, Beacon Hill, the most historic and elegant neighborhood in the city, is recognized as the essence of Old Boston. Lighting the Way Paul Finnegan, one of the first administrators of athletics at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, recognized the symbolic importance of the beacon. In fact, he became a beacon in his own right. In the early 1970 s, Finnegan established intramural and recreational athletics for UMass Boston Students at the university s first campus in Park Square, with programs on the Boston Common and at the Greater Boston YMCA. Knowing that the campus would be built on Boston Harbor, where beacons guide ships from all over the world, Finnegan believed a beacon would be the ideal symbol to represent UMass Boston and its athletic teams. Shine On With good reason. The beacon is a symbol of hope and guidance. As a light that is never extinguished, it represents a constant. A promise that, if you persevere, you will reach your destination. As the city s only public university, UMass Boston guides students to a better future. It offers promise to those associated with the university that they can shine. Rise above. Realize their hopes and dreams. It reflects UMass Boston Athletics. UMass Boston athletic teams have been known as the Beacons since In 1982, an official logo was rendered. It remained for almost 20 years but this friendly cartoon character failed to capture the drive and determination of UMass Boston s athletics. However, the new Beacon logo does exactly that. And more. Our logo, like our program, conveys light, strength and endurance. We have an intensity of focus, a relentless pursuit to achieve. We endure in the darkest of outlooks. John Shay was the father of former Beacon basketball captain Mike Shay, and was one of the team s most visible and enthusiastic supporters. 44 TEAM COMMUNITY SERVICE Keeping in line with the mission of an urban university, the UMass Boston men s basketball team has a long-standing record of service to the Boston community, most evident in the team s annual holiday visit to Boston Medical Center. Every season before Christmas, Beacons Head and his staff and players load up a van with toys and drive to the pediatric ward of the medical center. The Beacons distribute gifts, sign autographs and spread holiday cheer to youngsters. The annual trip is as rewarding for the players and coaches as it is for the children. The team also distributes toys to the UMass Boston Daycare Center. I think our annual Christmas trip, along with the rest of the community service that we do is an opportunity for us to really stress UMass Boston players and staff distribute toys at UMass Boston Day Care Center. the fact that we believe community service should be a part of all of our lives for the rest of our lives, says Coach Titus. The athletes that have been involved have truly enjoyed the opportunity to do the community service and get a lot out of that opportunity, particularly the clinics, the trips to the hospital and those kinds of things. The Beacons basketball team and its coaching staff also is a regular presence at a number of clinics and programs both on-campus and in the Greater Boston community. Coach Titus and his staff speak extensively at local high schools and clinics, and the Beacons regularly invite community groups to attend and participate in team practices. Each year, the men s basketball team makes a trip to Nantucket to host a free clinic for youngsters at the Boys and Girls Club as well as Nantucket High School. Two years ago, the Boston Medical Center honored the UMass Boston men s basketball program with its monthly We Care award. The Beacons have had a long-standing tradition of teaching basketball to children all over the region.
