9 2007 Season Outlook Greyhound Soccer - 9

10 2007 Season Outlook The 2007 Loyola College women s soccer team is youthful and hungry for success. The team returns just three seniors and six juniors while the sophomore class is the largest group of returners with nine. Head Coach John Byford also added four newcomers this season to make for a youthful but talented team that is eager to return the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference trophy back to Baltimore. The team played very well throughout the season, ending with a record, 8-1 in the conference and a win against local powerhouse, the University of Maryland, Byford said about the 2006 season. Our disappointment came again at the MAAC Tournament where, as the No. 1 seed, we lost in the semifinal round. This year, our goal must be to win our conference championship and progress to the national tournament. We have a young group, but a hard-working and talented group who are learning all the time. The Greyhounds, despite winning the regular season MAAC title in 2006, fell in the conference tournament, taking away their chances of making the College Cup. Loyola has a history of dominance in the MAAC with seven regular season titles, seven tournament titles and five trips to the NCAA College Cup. The Greyhounds hold a dominant record in MAAC play since the start of the program in 1992 and hope to continue that success in A position-by-position breakdown of the 2007 Loyola College Women s Soccer Team Forwards At forward, Byford posts the experience of a senior, two sophomores who saw significant playing time in 2006 and another sophomore returning from an injury. At forward, our leading returning scorer is back in Christina Gomez along with Kelly Farrell who was recovering from an ACL injury last year, classmate Rachel Shuck who had a good first campaign and Ty Glenn who can impact any game, Byford said. Gomez appeared in 17 games as a freshman while earning starts in 15 of those contests. She scored six goals, to tie the lead in goals, and added four assists to tie for second in points with 16. She earned a spot of the conference all-rookie team and was also once named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for her efforts over the season. Shuck meanwhile appeared in 12 games and scored her first collegiate goal and assist over Iona on October 22. In addition to Gomez, Shuck and Farrell, who spent last season on the sidelines because of an injury, Byford returns senior Ty Glenn to the forward group. Glenn has played in 34 games over her career while scoring eight goals and adding 11 assists. Midfielders At midfield, the Greyhounds post the largest group of returners with seven while adding two freshmen to the mix. The returners are experienced with two seniors, three juniors and two sophomore. In the midfield, we return a strong group which includes Brynn McGrath, a team captain, and Brittany Marano, a senior who had an excellent spring season, along with juniors Lea Day, Theresa Ferraina and Kristina Balfoort, Byford said. Colleen Kinealy and Andrea Toro have last season s experience under their belt while our freshman class includes Lina Staropoli, a Region I ODP player and Marissa Greco. McGrath is a senior who has played in and started in 38 games for the Greyhounds since she transferred to the Evergreen campus from UCLA. She has earned first and second-team all-maac honors for her work as a defensive midfielder. Marano, a fellow senior, has appeared in Brynn McGrath 26 games while starting in one during her career. She gained valuable experience this spring and will use that knowledge in the fall. Day is one of the returning starters at midfield, having started in all 19 games last season and appearing in all 20 as a rookie. She has scored four goals and added seven assists in her career while earning second-team all-maac last season. Ferraina joined the team last year as a sophomore 10 - Greyhound Soccer

11 and appeared in 19 games while starting in four. She made an impact at forward, scoring a goal and adding two assists. Balfoort also joined the team last season, transferring from Northeastern. She gained experience last season in three games. Kinealy had a standout rookie year, playing in 19 games and starting in 16. She scored three goals while adding three assists in her first season while being named to the conference all-rookie team. Toro, another Colleen Kinealy sophomore, gained valuable experience in the 2006 season, appearing in four games while starting in one. The Greyhounds add freshmen Greco and Staropoli in the midfield. Greco comes to Loyola from West Morris Central High School in New Jersey where she earned coaches all-state, all-area and first-team allcounty accolades during her career. Staropoli played at Bridgewater Raritan where she helped her team to numerous championships. Defenders At the back we return team captain and previous MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, Sarra Moller, along with sophomores Amanda Meehan, Heather Cooke and Kristine Perez, Byford said. This group will be boosted by freshmen Kelly Thomas and Taylor Santypal who will be fighting for starting spots and junior Carly Deiter who returns from injury. Moller, a junior, has appeared in all of the 39 games the Greyhounds have played in the last two seasons. She has been named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, allrookie team, first-team all-maac twice and third-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region. Moller has also scored three goals from her defensive position Cooke also returns on defense where she played in 18 games, starting in half of those contests. She scored her first collegiate goal over Iona and tallied her 2007 Season Outlook first assist as a Greyhound against Florida State. Meehan also earned a good amount of playing time as a freshman, appearing in 18 games while starting 13. She earned a spot on the conference allrookie team and was once named the MAAC Rookie of the Week. She scored a goal and added an assist from her defensive position. Perez gained valuable experience, playing in three games. Byford adds his final newcomers to defense with the addition to Thomas and Santypal. Thomas helped her Walsh Jesuit squad to numerous championships including the Ohio State title in 2004 and Santypal comes to Loyola from Massapequa where she helped her team to state, Long Island and county championships. Deiter, a transfer from the University of Florida last season, sat out 2006 due to an injury. Byford and staff are hopeful about what she can bring to the team this season. Goalkeepers Loyola s roster boasts two qualified goalkeepers, both with experience. We return two excellent goalkeepers in Amanda Picirrilli and Brittany Henderson, Byford said. Amanda is a team captain and a great leader, while Henderson will build on her first year of experience. Amanda Picirrili Picirrilli has appeared in 21 games in goal for the Hounds while starting in 15. She posts an impressive 0.47 goals against average over her career with an 81.6 saves percentage. Last season she appeared in five games with four starts and allowed just one goal. Henderson appeared in 16 games as a rookie, starting in 15 of those outings. She recorded 53 saves for an 85.7 saves percentage and posted a 1.24 goals against average. She earned a spot on the MAAC allrookie team and was a one-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week selection. Greyhound Soccer - 11
