Bump ~Procedural~ Created by Kim Sherring Photography by Brittany Wilson
A Note To The Parents, Teachers, And Caregivers This book has been created in order to try and address the problem of child obesity, first by getting parents and teachers properly informed about the issue, and then by actually helping children engage in healthy activities that will get them moving. As technology becomes more and more advanced, studies are showing that greater numbers of children suffer from obesity for reasons such as choosing to play video games instead of sports. Obesity in childhood is a concern because it can lead to future health problems such as diabetes and stroke. I hope that this book will be a helpful example of one way physical activity can be both healthy and fun for kids. I have written it at an intermediate reading level, so that as your kids learn to play they will also advance their reading and literacy skills. Bump is a basketball based skill game that will increase ability in skills such as sprinting, shot accuracy, lay-ups, footwork, competition, leadership, and play under pressure. It is a game I personally grew up with and loved as a child, and so with it I enthusiastically welcome you and your child to the wonderful world of sports and physical activity!
Hi there! My name is Kim! What is your name? I m going to be teaching you to play one of my favourite games today.
The game is called Bump! It will help you improve your basketball skills. But it s also a good game to just play anytime with your friends!
Step 1 The very first thing you must do is get a group of your friends together to play the game! You will need at least 4 friends to play with you!
Remember to stretch those muscles before you play!
Step 2 The second thing you do in bump is have everyone line up in a single file line in front of the net. You should be at a distance that isn t too easy, but isn t too hard to shoot from either!
A good point to line up at is called the foul line. This is the foul line.
Step 3 Next, give the first two people in line each a basketball.
Step 4 To start the game, the person at the front of the line will shoot the ball and try and get it in the net. Make sure you don t step over the foul line!
Step 5 Once his ball touches the rim of the basketball net, the second person in line can shoot the ball!
Step 6 If the first person gets his ball in, congratulations! You can pass the ball to person number three in line, and go to the back of the line up. You are safe! For now.
If you miss your first shot, that s ok! Because you get to shoot again from wherever you want this time. If you want, you can do a lay-up, or pick your favourite spot to shoot from.
But watch out!!! If the person behind you makes their shot before you, you are out of the game!
If you are out, pass your ball to the next person in line, and sit along the sideline. You can always cheer on your friends!
Step 7 Now I will tell you the reason the game is called bump! You are allowed to bump the other persons ball away while you are both fighting to get your basketballs in the net first. You are not allowed to hit the ball out of your friends hands, but if they miss their shot and their ball is coming toward you, bump it away!
Step 7 Cont.
Step 8 If you get your ball bumped away, don t worry. You can still make it! Sprint to retrieve your ball, and dribble it back to the net to try and get your ball in before you get out.
Step 9 So remember, the goal of the game is to get your ball in before the person in front of you does. This will knock them out! The game ends when one person is left standing. This person is the winner!
Step 10 If you want to play again, the winner will get to shoot first.
I hope you all had a lot of fun playing bump with us today! I hope to see you all again soon! Bye now!!
Bump Created by Kim Sherring Photography by Brittany Wilson The contents of this book are designed to teach children that staying active can also be fun. Bump will help them improve many skills on and off the basketball court, and if played regularly, will keep children active. It is written at an intermediate reading level so that as the child learns to play, they will improve their reading skills as well. I know, we re sneaky. Author bio: Kim Sherring is currently a Kinesiology student at the University of Regina. She has always been passionate about staying fit through dance, sports, and an active gym routine. It is important to her to pass on her passion and knowledge to other people, young and old. This book was developed in partial fulfillment of KIN 180: A Growth & Development Course at the University of Regina, 2012.
