To call this year s Demon Deacon team young is like saying Tiger Woods can play a little golf. Gone are five veteran seniors who combined to play in more than 600 career games, including forward Darius Songaila, a second team All-ACC selection and a second-round pick in the NBA Draft. Also gone are three other starters -- Antwan Scott, Broderick Hicks and Craig Dawson -- as well as Ervin Murray. I am very proud of those seniors, said head coach Skip Prosser, who enters his second year at Wake Forest after seven successful seasons at Xavier. They worked hard and did everything we asked of them. This year s Deacon team includes 11 scholarship players including five freshmen, four sophomores and one junior. The junior center Dshamal Schoetz -- has never played in a college game. The good news for Wake Forest is that the nine freshmen and sophomores are talented. Sophomores Taron Downey, Vytas Danelius and Jamaal Levy played key roles for last year s team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. I think we will be talented, but not nearly as experienced, Prosser said. We only have two seniors and one junior. We have to get contributions from freshmen and it s a scary proposition counting on freshmen. Wake s best news is that senior Josh Howard is back. Howard (13.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game) will be one of the premier players in the ACC. The senior small forward is one of the nation s most versatile players. At 6-6, he ranked second in the ACC in offensive Senior Josh Howard is a preseason candidate for the John R. Wooden Award. rebounds, and he led the team in steals. I wouldn t trade him for anybody in the league, Prosser said. He can have a break-out senior year. If he gets stronger and improves his shooting range, he could have a spectacular season. Howard was playing the best basketball of his career just before suffering a high ankle sprain in early February. He scored 21 points in a key win at NC State, tossed in a career-high-tying 24 points in a home win over North Carolina and he had a double-double (18 points, 15 rebounds) in a narrow road loss at eventual national champion Maryland. After finally recovering from the ankle injury, Howard was slowed once more during the off-season with a stress reaction in his shin. He should, however, be at 100 percent when practice begins Oct. 12. This season, Howard will have to be a leader and set an example for the host of young players on the squad. Josh has been a very good complementary player, Prosser said. This year his role will be much different. Howard will receive strong consideration for ACC Preseason Player of the Year, and he s on the preseason list of candidates for the prestigious John R. Wooden Award. The other senior is 6-5 shooting guard Steve Lepore (4.5 ppg.), who suffered a knee injury (ruptured patella tendon) in last year s ACC Tournament. Lepore, a former Northwestern transfer, will be a valuable part of the rotation, but he may not be at full strength until November or December. If Lepore can return quickly and to the form he had as a two-year starter at Northwestern (118 three-point field goals, 477 points in two seasons), it would be a huge bonus for the Deacons. Another unknown for Wake Forest is junior center Dshamal Schoetz. The seven-footer was redshirted by then-head coach Dave Odom in Last year he suffered a season-ending knee injury in October and sat out the entire season. He s back for his third year at Wake Forest, but looking for his first taste of the action. The other three returning lettermen are sophomores -- point guard Taron Downey (4.7 ppg.), forward Vytas Danelius (6.6 ppg. and 4.2 rpg.) and forward Jamaal Levy (2.7 ppg.). The first month of last season, Downey was a seldom-used reserve. Beginning in January, however, Downey emerged as a starter. He started 10 games, averaging more than 16 minutes of action per contest. The southpaw sank 29 three-point field goals and dished out 63 assists. Danelius learned a great deal last season from fellow Lithuanian Darius Songaila. Danelius (pronounced dan-a-loose) played in all 34 games, started twice, and was one of the league s best reserves last year. Levy is hoping to pick up right where he left off. 40 WAKE FOREST BASKETBALL

5 THE OUTLOOK He concluded his freshman season by scoring 10 points, including a three-pointer, and grabbing four rebounds against nationally-ranked Oregon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Those three guys (Downey, Danelius and Levy) worked hard this summer, Prosser said. All three of them have a chance to be good players. Wake s five highly-touted freshmen could play a major role this season. Correction. Wake s five freshmen must play a major role this season. Center Eric Williams, 6-9, is the most decorated of the newcomers. The McDonald s and Parade All- American, conservatively listed at 270 pounds, gives Wake Forest instant bulk in the paint. Williams, who averaged 28 points and 14 rebounds per game last season at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School, will be expected to replace some of the scoring and rebounding void left by Songaila and Scott. Chris Ellis (6-8, 250) also gives the Deacons size and strength in the middle. He is a very athletic post player who averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game last season for a strong Marietta (GA) High School team. Richard Joyce (6-5, 200) grew up a short distance from the WFU campus in Mount Airy, then played his senior year of high school at powerful Oak Hill (VA) Academy. Joyce originally committed to the Odom-coached Wake Forest staff, then re-committed when Prosser came on board last spring. Joyce Sophomore forward Vytas Danelius shot 56.6 percent from the field last season. Senior Steve Lepore could give Wake Forest a huge boost if he can completely recover from knee surgery. u Quote I wouldn t trade (Josh Howard) for anyone in the league. He can have a break-out senior year. If he gets stronger and improves his shooting range, he could have a spectacular season. -- Skip Prosser will give the Deacons depth at the big guard and small forward positions. Justin Gray (6-2, 185) also provides the Deacons with versatility. Gray, a Charlotte (NC) native who teamed with Joyce at powerhouse Oak Hill (VA) Academy last winter, is expected to see action at both guard positions this year. Trent Strickland (6-5, 190) signed with the Deacons in the spring after a successful year at Hargrave (VA) Military Academy. Strickland is a wing player with outstanding athletic ability. How quickly the freshmen adjust to the intensity level of Division I basketball could be a key to Wake s fortunes in Freshmen, being freshmen, have very little appreciation of what it takes to be competitive in this league, Prosser said. They call them growing pains because it s painful. As expected, the Deacons will force the tempo again this season. Last year the Deacons were among the nation s highest-scoring teams. We ll press more than last year, but not as much as we will down the road, Prosser said. It s a mentality as much as a function of athleticism. We are working on that mentality. The Deacons strength could be their athleticism, as well as their versatility. Howard, Downey, Gray, Joyce and Strickland can play multiple positions. The non-conference portion of the schedule will be challenging. The Deacons face road games at Wisconsin, Marquette and Richmond and home games with Temple, St. John s, SMU, among others.
