The trip marks the second time the Boilermakers have advance to New York City in the early-season NIT event, formerly know as the Preseason NIT. Purdue advanced to the semifinals in 1998, falling to North Carolina before defeating St. John s in the consolation game. NIT Season Tip-Off History Purdue s appearance in the Dick s Sporting oods NIT Season Tiip-Off marks the fourth time the Boilermakers have participated in the preseason tournament based out of Madison Square arden. The Boilermakers first appeared in what was then the Preseason NIT in , posting a 1-1 record. Four years later the Boilermakers returned to the Preseason NIT and again went 1-1. Purdue s most recent appearance in the Preseason NIT came in the season. The Boilermakers went -1 that year, advancing to New York City for the first time. Matt Painter on Kelsey Barlow... Kelsey can play three positions, the one, two or three. He handles the basketball very well and defers to others, which is a quality that not enough players have. Byrd... D.J. is a big guard that has the ability to play multiple positions. He s got a Big Ten body, good athleticism and, most of all, he plays hard. He s someone we have been recruiting for a very long time and is very familiar with our program. e are very fortunate to get a guy of his physical stature that can slide in and fi t with what we do on an offensive standpoint. Matt Painter on Jeff Robinson... Jeff is a very talented player with a high ceiling in terms of where he can go from age 17 to 2. He is athletic and long, and has good basketball instincts. e believe he has a really good chance to be a good player in the Big Ten. 4 ame No. 5 Team Captains MULTIPLE YEARS AS CAPTAIN Junior uard Chris Kramer is the 27th Boilermaker to serve the Purdue as captain during multiple seasons. Kramer was the sole captain during the 27-8 campaign, and is one of three captains in 28-9 (along with fellow junior Keaton rant and sophomore Robbie Hummel). There have been only three Boilermakers in the history of the program to serve as captain for three seasons: Terry Dischinger (196, 1961 and 1962), Brian alker (1979, 198 and 1981) and Cuonzo Martin (199, 1994 and 1995). Hummel Becomes Ace Bomber Sophomore Robbie Hummel has jumped into the top spot in Purdue history for threepoint accuracy, hitting on 46.4-percent of his long range shots (52-of-112). ith a minimum of 1 attempted treys, Hummel has moved ahead of former associate head coach Cuonzo Martin, who hit on percent (179-of-97) during his career. Hummel s classmate, E Twaun Moore, is also among the top 1 three-point shooters in Purdue history, hitting on 42.8-percent of his attempts (71-of-166). The list is composed of 5 student athletes who, based on last year s individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball s most prestigious honor. Created in 1976, the John R. ooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation s best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2. The trio of captains marks the fi rst time Purdue has had three captains since the 2-4 season when Brett Buscher, Kenneth Lowe and Austin Parkinson served the team. Chris Kramer served as the lone captain last season, becoming the first two-time captain under Matt Painter and the first at Purdue since Lowe served in 22- and 2-4. Kramer is the 27th Boilermaker to serve as team captain in the program s history. earing the Red Shirt Freshman guard John Hart will be redshirted during the 28-9 season. Hart played in both of Purdue s exhibition games, playing a total of 22 minutes. In the two exhibition games, the Beech rove, Ind., product scored five points with one rebound and one steal. The last time the Boilermakers found themselves as high as No. 11 in any AP poll was eek 8 of the season when Purdue came in at No. 7. It s nice for the team to be recognized as a good team, head coach Matt Painter said, but I don t put a lot of weight on the preseason selections. Over the past 15 seasons, only six of the teams that have been picked by the media to win the league have actually accomplished the feat. Being picked to win the conference doesn t guarantee anything. A Look Back at 27-8 Dancing Again For the second consecutive year, the Boilermakers were selected to the NCAA Tournament. The last time Purdue had been selected in back-to-back years was in 1999 and 2. Selected as the sixth seed, Purdue won its first-round game, a 9-79 decision over Baylor, for the 12th consecutive season. Its 12 straight first round wins is the longest streak nationally. The Boilermakers lost to third-seeded Xavier in the second round. Just in, Baby! Purdue s 25 wins in the 27-8 season were sixth-most in school history. The last time Purdue reached the 25 win mark was the season. Additionally, the Boilermakers 15 wins during the conference season were the most since team also won 15 games. In Painter s first three years, Purdue has gone from 11th, fourth and second in the league standings. etting it Done at Home Much like it did during the 26-7 season, last season s Purdue squad dominated its home court. The Boilermakers finished last season s home slate with a convincing 16-1 record, as well as a 9- record in Big Ten play. Purdue s 16 home wins ties a school record and its nine home conference wins is the most since the season. Rankings rap For the first time since the 2-4 season, the Boilermakers earned a top 25 ranking in the Associated Press poll in the Feb. 4, 28 poll. Purdue came in at No. 24 in that poll. The Boilermakers continued to climb in the rankings, even making it as high as No. 14. Also, Purdue knocked off teams ranked in the AP Poll s top 11 three times during the 27-8 season. The Boilermakers finished the season with a 25-9 record and a No. 2 ranking in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and AP Poll. Hummel an Instant Impact Purdue forward Robbie Hummel established himself early as a true Boilermaker and fanfavorite. His gritty style of play not only earned him fan support, but several post season honors as well. Hummel was named First Team All-Big Ten, the first Purdue freshman to do so, by the conference s coaches and media after averaging 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists a game in his first season. Hummel was also named to the USBA s All District Team and was a finalist for the John R. ooden Award and the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Award. Hummel also earned a spot on the conference s All-Freshman Team. In addition, Hummel ranked in the top 1 in most freshman records, including fourth in most points scored, sixth in assists, second in games started, third in -point field goals, first in -point field goal percentage, fourth in rebounding average and fourth in steals. In the Big Ten statistics, Hummel ranked 11th in scoring and led the conference in -point field goal percentage (44.7). Moore Honored uard E Twaun Moore, another lauded member of Matt Painter s 27 recruiting class, made his presence felt in the Big Ten. Moore was selected as a Second Team All- Big Ten performer last season after averaging 12.9 points a game - sixth best in the conference and tops on the team. It is the first time in school history a true freshman has led the team in scoring. Like Hummel, Moore ranks in the top 1 in most freshman records. Moore ranks second in points scored, fourth in points per game, fourth in assists, second in games started, first in -point field goals, third in -point field goal percentage, seventh in free-throw percentage and sixth in steals. He too earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Kramer Named Top Defender After being named to the Big Ten All- Defensive Team as a freshman, guard Chris Kramer was tabbed as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, the fourth Boilermaker to earn the honor. He also earned a spot on the league s All-Defensive Team. Kramer followed up his 64 steal freshman season with 67 steals, which led the Big Ten, as a sophomore. Kramer s 11 career steals ranks him tied for ninth with Chad Austin on the all-time steals list. Kramer also led Purdue with 95 assists last season, leading Purdue both offensively and defensively. As a result, Kramer was tabbed as a member of Third Team All-Big Ten by the conference s coaches and media. K Named MVP After averaging 11.2 points,.2 rebounds and shooting 44 percent from -point land, Keaton rant was honored by his teammates with the team s Most Valuable Player Award at the team s postseason party with The Paint Crew. rant, who was voted the Big Ten Player of the eek on Jan. 21 and was voted All-Big Ten Honorable Mention by the conference coaches and media, earned the distinction because of his resilient play throughout the season. rant was hampered by nagging injuries most of the season, but pushed through them and helped lead Purdue to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. Purdue vs. Coppin State Coaching Success It s very clear Purdue coach Matt Painter is getting Purdue back to the top of the Big Ten. ith the success the Boilermaker basketball program enjoyed last season, Painter was awarded the Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading Purdue to a 25-9 record last season. The last a Purdue coach won the award was in 2, when ene Keady lead Purdue to a 24-1 record and a second place conference finish. Not only was Painter recognized by his conference peers, but he was awarded the USBA District 5 Coach of the Year. This is the second time Painter has won the award; he last won the honor in 24 with Southern Illinois. Nationally, Painter is being recognized as one of the best up and coming coaches. He was a finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year and was a nominee for the USBA Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award last season. Painter continues to guide Purdue back to the top of the Big Ten. In three years at his alma mater, Painter boasts a 66-4 record and has increased Purdue s win total from seven in the year prior to his taking over as head coach to 25 last season. Transactions This season, Purdue welcomes a trio of guards to the roster for the 28-9 season. John Hart, Lewis Jackson and Ryne Smith join the Boilermakers in hopes of continuing the climb toward the Big Ten s peak. Jackson and Smith are top 15 prospects by most recruiting services. Hart signed on during the spring recruiting period. Several student-athletes will not be returning to the team this season.
