BLAST FROM THE PAST Although Friday night s meeting will be the first for the teams at the NCAA Division I level, Penn State and Army twice played during the Nittany Lions varsity years in the 1940s. Penn State fell to the Black Knights, 18-3, Feb. 26, 1944 and by a margin Feb. 14, Both games were played at West Point. Army is one of three Penn State opponents from the 1940s (Cornell, Colgate) that still sponsors varsity hockey. SERVICE ACADEMIES Friday night s matchup will be the first of three season meetings between Penn State and a service academy. The Nittany Lions will also host Air Force Nov at Greenberg Ice Pavilion. A TRIP ALONG THE ATLANTIC During the course of the season, Penn State will play eight Atlantic Hockey opponents, the most from any conference. The Nittany Lions are currently against AHA foes. Penn State s AHA schedule consists of AIC (10/12-13), RIT (10/20), Army (10/26), Sacred Heart (10/27), Air Force (11/9-10), Holy Cross (12/7-8), Robert Morris (12/15, 28), UConn (1/4-5). LAST TIME OUT Penn State defeated RIT, 3-2, in front of a sellout crowd of 10,556 at Rochester s Blue Cross Arena Oct. 20. The game was played at Blue Cross Arena, home of the American Hockey League s Rochester Americans, and was part of the University s homecoming celebration. Freshman forward Curtis Loik scored his first collegiate goal to give Penn State a 1-0 lead, while classmate Casey Bailey and sophomore Max Gardiner, who scored his first Nittany Lion goal, (1g, 1a) also scored. PJ Musico made a career-high 40 saves in net, including nine in the final 4:13 as Penn State killed a RIT power HEAD TO HEAD play. NEUTRAL SITE SUCCESS Through four games, Penn State has twice played at neutral site venues, winning both contest in AHL arenas. The Nittany Lions won their first NCAA Division I game against AIC Oct. 13 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Mohegan Sun Arena is home to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Against RIT, Penn State topped the Tigers, 3-2, at Blue Cross Arena, home of the Rochester Americans. SPREADING THE WEALTH Eleven players have recorded at least one point, while eight Nittany Lions have registered at least two points. Freshman David Glen (2g, 1a) and sophomore Max Gardiner (1g, 2a) lead the team with three points each. FRESHMAN IMPACT Seven of Penn State s nine skating freshmen have recorded at least one point during the season. All seven players registered at least one point during the Nittany Lions first two games. 3 vs. Army Friday, Oct. 26, 2012 PSU FALLS TO BUFFALO STATE The Nittany Lions fell to Buffalo State, 3-0, Friday night at Buffalo State Sports Arena. Freshman Matthew Skoff made 23 saves for the Nittany Lions. Penn State was 0-for-9 on the power play, while the Bengals were 3-for-11 with the man advantage. The teams combined for 29 infractions and 83 penalty minutes. HISTORY IS MADE Penn State won its first game at the NCAA Division I level with a 4-3 overtime victory against AIC Saturday, Oct. 13. A crowd of 5,389 fans came out to Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to see the Nittany Lions. Penn State took a 1-0 lead in the first period and a 3-1 third-period advantage before the Yellow Jackets tied the game in the third. David Glen, who tallied twice, scored the game-winner just 38 seconds into OT, while freshmen Mark Yanis and Jonathan Milley also scored. Milley s goal was Penn State s first power-play goal. Sophomore PJ Musico stopped 32 shots for the win. PSU SPLITS OPENING WEEKEND The Nittany Lions split their opening weekend, falling to AIC Friday, Oct. 12 before their historic victory the next day. Penn State competed in its first NCAA Division I game Friday, Oct. 12 against AIC at Greenberg Ice Pavilion. The Nittany Lions twice erased onegoal deficits but the Yellow Jackets won, 3-2, in overtime with 21 seconds remaining. Freshman forward Casey Bailey tallied the first goal in program history, while junior forward Taylor Holstrom tied the game late in the third. Junior defenseman Nate Jensen and freshman blueliners Joseph Lordo and Mark Yanis collected one assist each on the historic night. Freshman goalie Matthew Skoff made 26 saves in his collegiate debut. It also marked the first varsity men s hockey game since March 3, On that day, the Nittany Lions fell to Georgetown, Penn State fielded a varsity hockey team for five seasons in the 1940s ( , ) before the sport was dropped due to limited facilities. NCAA DIVISION I HOCKEY With the addition of Penn State to the NCAA Division I ranks, there are now 59 schools that sponsor NCAA Division I men s hockey. The last school to establish NCAA hockey was Robert Morris in OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN Sophomore forward Tommy Olczyk was named Penn State s first NCAA Division I captain. Junior defenseman Nate Jensen and senior forward George Saad will serve as assistant captains. All captains were chosen through a team vote. NCAA VETERANS Five players -- Max Gardiner (Minnesota), Taylor Holstrom (Mercyhurst), Nate Jensen (Mercyhurst), Bryce Johnson (St. Cloud State), Justin Kirchhevel (Alaska Anchorage) -- on Penn State s 27-man roster have previous NCAA Division I experience. All five student-athletes played for their respective teams during the season. Holstrom was named Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year that season. NHL CONNECTIONS Several members of the team have family members who play or have played on NHL teams. Max Gardiner s brother, Jake, plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs. George Saad s brother, Brandon, appeared in two games with the Chicago Blackhawks in Tommy Olczyk s dad, Eddie, was a 16-year NHL veteran who helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup in Nate Jensen s father, David, appeared in 18 games over three seasons with the Minnesota North Stars. FATHER/SON ROOMMATES Tommy Olczyk s father, Eddie, and Nate Jensen s father, David, lived together while playing for Team USA in GoPSUSports.com the 1984 Olympics. Tommy and Nate are roommates at Penn State. NHL HOPEFUL Sophomore forward Max Gardiner was chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the third round (74th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Gardiner will be the first NHL draft choice to skate for Penn State. TWO OF A KIND Junior forward Justin Kirchhevel is one of two South Dakota-born student-athletes to play NCAA Division I hockey. GADOWSKY NAMED HEAD COACH Twelve-year NCAA coaching veteran Guy Gadowsky was named Penn State s first NCAA Division I coach on April 24, Gadowsky served as head coach at both Princeton ( ) and Alaska ( ) before coming to Penn State. He helped Princeton to two NCAA tournament appearances (2008, 2009) and the 2009 ECAC Hockey championship. Gadowsky left Princeton with the highest winning percentage among all Tigers head coaches since In , he led Alaska to its only 20-win season since it joined the CCHA in FIRST FOUR MEMBERS JOIN Forwards Taylor Holstrom, Bryce Johnson, and Justin Kirchhevel and defenseman Nate Jensen were announced as the first four members of Penn State s first NCAA team Sept. 5, FIRST RECRUITING CLASS Head coach Guy Gadowsky wrapped up his first-ever recruiting class with the additions of Max Gardiner and Joseph Lordo April 26.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN The roster breakdown includes six seniors, six juniors, five sophomores and 10 freshmen. The average height is just over 6-foot-0 and the average weight is 192. Nine players played in the United States Hockey League in the season prior their arrivals at Penn State. The Nittany Lions represent 17 different states and Canadian provinces. SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN The Nittany Lions will play games against teams from all five NCAA Division I conferences Atlantic Hockey, CCHA, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East, WCHA and fellow independent Alabama Huntsville. At least three teams that participated in the 2012 NCAA tournament appear on Penn State s schedule. The Nittany Lions will host Air Force (Nov. 9-10) and will visit Michigan State (Jan ) and Frozen Four participant Union (Nov ). FRIENDLY CONFINES Greenberg Ice Pavilion, which opened in January 1981, will serve as Penn State s home for the season. HOME SWEET (ALMOST) HOME Construction is underway for the future home of Penn State Hockey, Pegula Ice Arena, near the corner of University Drive and Curtin Road. The $90-million facility will feature two rinks, including a main rink with a 6,000-seat capacity and 1,000-seat student section. The facility is scheduled to be completed by September BIG TEN ON THE HORIZON With the addition of Penn State to NCAA hockey world, the Big Ten created a new hockey conference that will begin competition for the season. Penn State will join Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin in the league. The first four Big Ten tournaments will be held in NHL arenas -- Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul (2014, 2016) and Detroit s Joe Louis Arena (2015, 2017). Since that time, the Pegulas have contributed $102 to the program. The $88 million donation was the largest in University history.
