FIRST SERIES SWEEP The Nittany Lions defeated Alabama Huntsville, 4-0 and 4-3, last weekend to secure their first-ever series sweep. In the opener, David Glen paced the team with three goals, while Matthew Skoff made 23 saves for his second shutout. Max Gardiner also scored for the Nittany Lions, while Kenny Brooks secured a career-best two assists. SUCCESS IN FIRST B1G ROAD TRIP The Nittany Lions travelled to Big Ten country for the first time Jan , splitting their weekend series with Michigan State. After falling to the Spartans, 5-3, in the opener, the Nittany Lions erased a 2-0 deficit in a 3-2 victory in their first nationally-televised game (BTN). Defenseman Mark Yanis put Penn State on the board with a second-period power-play goal before Casey Bailey tied the game at 3:13 of the third period. Junior Taylor Holstrom tallied the game-winner with 4:01 left in the game, while freshman Matthew Skoff made 31 saves. BUCKING THE TREND Penn State s 3-2 comeback victory against the Spartans marked the team s first win this season when trailing after the first period. BIG TEN SUCCESS Penn State is against future Big Ten opponents in The Nittany Lions defeated Ohio State in the Three Rivers Classic Dec. 29 and split their two-game series against Michigan State Jan Penn State will wrap up its season with a two-game set against Wisconsin Feb PROFESSIONAL ROAD TOUR With a 6-1 exhibition victory against Ohio s ACHA team in Hershey, Pa., Feb. 1, Penn State played its sixth game at an NHL or AHL arena this season. The Nittany Lions finished (unofficially including Ohio) at professional venues this season. GREAT EXPOSURE During their inaugural campaign, the Nittany Lions have played in front of at least 5,000 fans eight times this season. Penn State is officially (6-2-0 including Ohio) when playing with at least 5,000 in attendance. FRESHMAN IMPACT All nine of Penn State s skating freshmen have recorded at least one point during the season. Penn State freshmen account for six of the Nittany Lions top-10 pointscorers. SPREADING THE WEALTH Penn State has had at least five different goal scorers in three games this season (Oct. 26 at Army, Oct. 27 at Sacred Heart, Nov. 10 vs. Air Force). Nineteen players have recorded at least two points, while 21 Nittany Lions have reached the scoresheet. LIONS KNOCK OFF VERMONT Junior Taylor Holstrom and Justin Kirchhevel recorded two points each and four different Nittany Lions scored in a 4-2 win against Vermont at Wells Fargo Center Jan. 19. Freshman Casey Bailey and David Glen also tallied their then-team-leading 11th goals of the season. Classmate Matthew Skoff turned aside 34 shots. The win snapped the Lions threegame losing streak. RECORD-SETTING CROWD With 19,529 in the stands at Wells Fargo Center Jan. 19, the Penn State vs. Vermont game was the most attended college hockey game in an NHL arena. GADOWSKY MILESTONE With Penn State s 4-2 victory against Vermont Jan. 19, head coach Guy Gadowsky set a new personal best as a first-year bench boss. During his first seasons with Alaska and Princeton, he guided the squads to six and eight victories, respectively, before leading the teams to program highs. Gadowsky led Alaska to its only 20-win season as a CCHA member in and guided Princeton to a program-best 21 victories in before garnering 22 victories the following season. QUICK TO THE NET Against UConn Jan. 5, freshman forward Casey Bailey scored the fastest goal in program history when he lit the lamp just 13 seconds into the game. THREE RIVERS CLASSIC RECAP Penn State fell to Robert Morris, 6-0, in the opening game of the Three Rivers Classic before defeating Ohio State, 5-4, Dec. 29. Freshman Casey Bailey recorded a career-high four points (2g, 2a) and classmate Luke Juha registered a career-best two assists. Junior forward Taylor Holstrom matched a career high with two goals and sophomore Max Gardiner equaled his best outing with three assists. Matthew Skoff made 36 saves against the Buckeyes. ROBERT MORRIS TAKES TWO In addition to its victory Dec. 28, Robert Morris defeated Penn State, 3-2, at Greenberg Ice Pavilion Dec. 15. Sophomore Tommy Olczyk and freshman Curtis Loik gave Penn State a 2-1, second-period lead, but the Colonials added a goal in the second and third to take the lead. Senior defenseman Brian Dolan recorded his first career point with an assist on Olczyk s goal. Robert Morris ( ) and Penn State ( ) are the two most recent additions to the NCAA DI ranks. SKOFF SECURES FIRST SHUTOUT Freshman goaltender Matthew Skoff earned his first career shutout with 18 saves in a 4-0 victory against Fredonia State Dec. 11. The win snapped the Lions fourgame losing streak. Sophomore Jacob Friedman (1g, 1a), who scored his first career goal, and freshman David Glen (2a) led Penn State with two points each. The Nittany Lions power play went 1-for-2 against the Blue Devils. HOLY CROSS RECAP Penn State was swept for the second

Friday night, Jonathan Milley, who played in his first game since Nov. 3, tallied a career-high three points (1g, 2a). LIONS FALL TO DUTCHMEN Penn State fell in back-to-back games for the first time with a pair of losses to No. 8 Union in Schenectady, N.Y. The Nittany Lions fell to Union, 2-0, Saturday, Nov. 24 and by a 4-1 score Sunday, Nov. 25. Freshman forward David Glen scored the Nittany Lions lone goal of the weekend. SKOFF SETS CAREER HIGH Freshman goaltender Matthew Skoff set career highs in consecutive starts against Union. Skoff stopped a career-best 40 shots Saturday, Nov. 24 before setting a new career high with 42 saves Sunday, Nov. 25. GADOWSKY INKS FIVE TO NLIs Head coach Guy Gadowsky announced Nov. 28 the addition of five players who signed National Letters of Intent during the November earlysigning period. The additions include forwards David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.), Zach Saar (Plainwell, Mich.) and Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.), defenseman David Thompson (Glen Mills, Pa.) and goaltender Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.). Goodwin (Sioux City; later traded to Cedar Rapids), McAdam (Waterloo), Saar (Des Moines) and Scheid (Lincoln) all hail from the Unites States Hockey League, while Thompson patrols the blue line for the British Columbia Hockey League s Chilliwack Chiefs. A Blaine, Minn., native, Scheid will represent the class only sophomore after playing with Alaska Anchorage in LONE ECAC HOCKEY MATCHUPS Penn State s games against Union were the program s first and only against an ECAC Hockey team in FIRST RANKED OPPONENT Union was the Nittany Lions first ranked opponent in program history. Union was ranked No. 8 in both the USA Hockey Magazine/USA Today and USCHO.com polls. MARK IT DOWN Another program first was accomplished Nov. 10 against Air Force when Michael McDonagh scored the first empty-net goal in program history. GARDINER S CAREER NIGHT Sophomore forward Max Gardiner recorded the first three-point game of his career against Air Force Nov. 10. The Deephaven, Minn., native, who tallied three points (1g, 2a) in 17 games with Minnesota in , has two goals and six assists in LIONS SPLIT WITH FALCONS Penn State split its weekend series with Air Force Nov. 9-10, falling to the Falcons 5-1 Friday night before rebounding with a 5-1 win Saturday. Air Force s 5-1 victory snapped the Nittany Lions four-game win streak. Justin Kirchhevel scored the lone goal Friday, while five different Lions reached the back of the net Saturday. Freshman Matthew Skoff made a career-high 31 saves Saturday for his second win of the season. KIRCHHEVEL MAKES HISTORY Justin Kirchhevel s third-period shorthanded goal against Air Force Nov. 9 was the program s first-ever at the NCAA level. STREAKING LIONS The Nittany Lions recorded a seasonbest four-game win streak from Oct. 20-Nov. 3. During that stretch, the Nittany Lions outscored their opponents by an 18-7 margin. Opposing teams were 1-for-20 on the power play. Penn State was down for a combined 6:17 during its four-game win streak. The Nittany Lions fell behind both Sacred Heart and Buffalo State, 1-0, for 32 seconds and 5:45, respectively, before tallying equalizing goals. Freshman David Glen extended his point-scoring streak to four games with a pair of goals, while senior Michael Longo and sophomore Tommy Olczyk also scored. Freshman goaltender Matthew Skoff made 23 saves for his first win. PSU SWEEPS ARMY, SHU Six different players scored as Penn State topped Sacred Heart, 6-3, Oct. 27. Penn State fell behind, 1-0, before scoring three goals in a 5:06 span to take a 3-1 lead. Senior forward Michael Longo and junior defenseman Nate Jensen scored their first goals of the season. ANOTHER MILESTONE SET With a 5-0 win against Army, Penn State earned its first shutout in the NCAA Division I era. Sophomore goaltender PJ Musico stopped all 34 Army shots for the shutout and improved to on the season. Penn State defeated Army, 5-0, for its first win against the Black Knights in a series that dates back to the 1940s. Five different Nittany Lions scored (Casey Bailey, Kenny Brooks, David Glen, Jonathan Milley, Peter Sweetland) in the game while Bailey and Glen registered a goal and two assists each. Brooks and Sweetland both scored their first collegiate goals. BLAST FROM THE PAST Penn State and Army twice played during the Nittany Lions varsity years in the 1940s. Penn State fell to the Black Knights, 18-3, Feb. 26, 1944 and by a margin Feb. 14, Both games were played at West Point. Army is one of three Penn State opponents from the 1940s (Cornell, Colgate) that still sponsors varsity hockey. PSU SPOILS RIT HOMECOMING Penn State defeated RIT, 3-2, in front of a sellout crowd of 10,556 at Rochester s Blue Cross Arena Oct. 20. The game was played at Blue Cross Arena, home of the American Hockey League s Rochester Americans, and was part of the University s homecoming celebration. PJ Musico made a career-high 40 saves in net, including nine in the final 4:13 as Penn State killed a RIT power play. BUFFALO STATE BLANKS PSU Penn State fell to Buffalo State, 3-0, Oct. 19. The Nittany Lions outshot Buffalo State by a margin. Both teams combined for 29 infractions, totaling 83 penalty minutes. The Bengals were 3-for-11 on the power play, while Penn State finished 0-for-9. Penn State s last loss of the season came against Buffalo State. HISTORY IS MADE Penn State won its first game at the NCAA Division I level with a 4-3 overtime victory against AIC Saturday, Oct. 13. A crowd of 5,389 fans came out to Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to see the Nittany Lions. Penn State took a 1-0 lead in the first period and a 3-1 third-period advantage before the Yellow Jackets tied the game in the third. David Glen, who tallied twice, scored the game-winner just 38 seconds into OT, while freshmen Mark Yanis and Jonathan Milley also scored. Milley s goal was Penn State s first power-play goal. Sophomore PJ Musico stopped 32 shots for the win. PSU SPLITS OPENING WEEKEND The Nittany Lions split their opening weekend, falling to AIC Friday, Oct. 12 before their historic victory the next day. Penn State competed in its first NCAA Division I game Friday, Oct. 12 against AIC at Greenberg Ice Pavilion. The Nittany Lions twice erased one-goal deficits but the Yellow Jackets won, 3-2, in overtime with 21 seconds remaining. Freshman forward Casey Bailey tallied the first goal in program history, while junior forward Taylor Holstrom tied the game late in the third. Junior defenseman Nate Jensen and freshman blueliners Joseph Lordo and Mark Yanis collected one assist each on the historic night. Freshman goalie Matthew Skoff made 26 saves in his collegiate debut.

NCAA DIVISION I HOCKEY With the addition of Penn State to the NCAA Division I ranks, there are now 59 schools that sponsor NCAA Division I men s hockey. The last school to establish NCAA hockey was Robert Morris in OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN Sophomore forward Tommy Olczyk was named Penn State s first NCAA Division I captain. Junior defenseman Nate Jensen and senior forward George Saad will serve as assistant captains. All captains were chosen through a team vote. NHL CONNECTIONS Several members of the team have family members who play or have played on NHL teams. Max Gardiner s brother, Jake, plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs. George Saad s brother, Brandon, appeared in two games with the Chicago Blackhawks in Tommy Olczyk s dad, Eddie, was a 16-year NHL veteran who helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup in Nate Jensen s father, David, appeared in 18 games over three seasons with the Minnesota North Stars. FATHER/SON ROOMMATES Tommy Olczyk s father, Eddie, and Nate Jensen s father, David, lived together while playing for Team USA in the 1984 Olympics. Tommy and Nate are roommates at Penn State. NHL HOPEFUL Sophomore forward Max Gardiner was chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the third round (74th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. The pair joined nine players -- forwards Casey Bailey, Kenny Brooks, David Glen, Curtis Loik and Jonathan Milley; defensemen Luke Juha, Connor Varley and Mark Yanis; and goaltender Matthew Skoff -- who signed NLIs Nov. 21. ROSTER BREAKDOWN The roster breakdown includes six seniors, five juniors, five sophomores and 10 freshmen. FRIENDLY CONFINES Greenberg Ice Pavilion, which opened in January 1981, will serve as Penn State s home for the season. HOME SWEET (ALMOST) HOME Construction is underway for the future home of Penn State Hockey, Pegula Ice Arena, near the corner of University Drive and Curtin Road. The $90-million facility will feature two rinks, including a main rink with a 6,000- seat capacity and 1,000-seat student section. The facility is scheduled to be completed by September BIG TEN ON THE HORIZON With the addition of Penn State to NCAA hockey world, the Big Ten created a new hockey conference that will begin competition for the season. Penn State will join Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin in the league. The first four Big Ten tournaments will be held in NHL arenas -- Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul (2014, 2016) and Detroit s Joe Louis Arena (2015, 2017).
