2 penn state HOCKEY PennStateMensHockey PENN STATE HOCKEY THIS WEEK S MATCHUP Penn State begins its regular season with a road contest against Canisius on Saturday, Oct. 0 at HARBORCENTER. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. Marks the first time Penn State has played Canisius in hockey. Also just the fifth game played in the Empire State. The game will be played at HARBORCEN- TER, the $72 million, 600,000-square foot hockey-themed, mixed-use development located in downtown Buffalo. The venue was financed by Penn State benefactors, Terry and Kim Pegula. SEASON OPENERS Penn State begins it season on the road for the first time in the NCAA Division I era. The Nittany Lions are -- in season openers under head coach Guy Gadowsky. Last year, Penn State played to a 2-2 tie against Connecticut. For the third time in four seasons as a Division I program, the Nittany Lions play an Atlantic Hockey opponent. PSU is --0 against AHA teams in season openers. FIRST-TIME OPPONENT Canisius is the first of five first-time opponents for the Nittany Lions this season and the first of two on the road (Niagara, Nov. 6). RECAPPING THE WINDSOR GAME Penn State played its first preseason game in program history, overcoming a two-goal deficit to score five unanswered goals and win, 5-2, over Windsor on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Pegula Ice Arena. David Glen led the way with three points on two goals and an assist. Glen s linemate, David Goodwin, cashed in on a goal and an assist. His goal with 8.6 seconds left in the second period tied the game. Curtis Loik opened the scoring midway through the second period on an unassisted tally. Freshman defenseman Vince Pedrie chipped in with a pair of assists and goalie Eamon McAdam made 2 saves in 30-plus minutes of action while not allowing a goal. RECAPPING Penn State put together its best season by adding 0 wins to its overall total and posting a winning season in Big Ten play (0-9--0). First win over a top-5 team: Nov. 4, 205 vs. No. 4 UMass Lowell, 4-, which was Guy Gadowsky s 200th career college win. First Big Ten sweep: Dec. 5-6 at Wisconsin; PSU earns a season sweep of the Badgers on Feb Nittany Lions earn national rankings in the USCHO poll twice, once at No. 20 and another at No. 9. Penn State beats Minnesota, 4-3, in overtime for the first time on Feb. 2. Nittany Lions sweep Michigan for the first time (March 6-7) with 0 goals, the most in a single Big Ten weekend by PSU. Casey Bailey earns All-Big Ten First Team honors, en route to an NHL contract in March. Guy Gadowsky named Big Ten Coach of the Year, his third conference coaching honor. NITTANY LIONS PICKED FOURTH Penn State, entering its fourth season of varsity hockey, was picked behind Michigan, Minnesota and Michigan State, but ahead of Ohio State and Wisconsin in the preseason poll. The Nittany Lions were picked sixth in both and Penn State exceeded expectations last season, leading the Big Ten for stretches of the season and with a chance to win the conference entering the final weekend of the season before finishing in fourth. GOODWIN, SCHEID NAMED BG PLAYERS TO WATCH Forwards David Goodwin and Eric Scheid were among the 2 athletes named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List on Monday, Sept. 29. Goodwin, the leading returning Big Ten point scorer, also posted career marks of 5 goals and 9 assists with a team-best plus-3 rating. A double major in economics and Spanish, Goodwin was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention in 204-5, adding a team-best four game-winning tallies to his ledger. Scheid, a redshirt-senior communication arts & sciences major, is coming off a career best season in where he scored 4 goals and 5 assists in 3 appearances. The speedy lefty had three game-winning goals, a short-handed goal and a power-play tally as well, while earning Academic All-Big Ten honors. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN On Aug. 20, head coach Guy Gadowsky announced that senior forward David Glen would be the third NIttany Lion to wear the C in SCOUTING CANISIUS The Canisius Golden Griffins, like Penn State, played an exhibition game on Sunday, falling 4-2 to the Ontario Institute of Technology. Canisius went last year en route to a second place finish in Atlantic Hockey and the AHA Semifinals. The Golden Griffins went in conference play and at home. Canisius was in its first season at HARBORCENTER last season. The Griffs averages 2.5 goals per game and 2.2 goals allowed per game. At home, Canisius scored 2.3 goals per game and allowed 2.0 per game. Canisius is led by th-year head coach David Smith, who has led CC to three straight AHA semifinal appearances Senior Ralph Cuddemi and junior Shane Conacher led the Griffs in scoring last year, combining for 76 points. Cuddemi earned preseason All-AHA honors. He scored 22 times last season. Conacher had a team-high 26 assists. Sophomore Ryan Schmelzer led the team in plus-minus (+5) last season while scoring five times and posting nine assists. Sophomore goalie Reilly Turner returns after playing 3 games in with a 2.54 GAA and.95 save percentage. Golden Griffins have 2 freshmen, the third largest rookie class in the country. PENN STATE-CANISIUS TIES A group of Nittany Lions and Golden Griffins played junior hockey together before joining the college ranks. Defensemen Luke Juha and David Thompson were named alternate captains. Both athletes are wearing letters for the first time. NITTANY LIONS TO MAKE AT LEAST 2 TV APPEARANCES The Big Ten released its television schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 23 and Penn State will have at least 2 televised games. The Nittany Lions will appear on television for regular-season contests beginning with Jan. 8 at homeagainst Minnesota (6:30 p.m.) on Big Ten Network and BTN2Go. That is the beginning of at least six games on BTN. Penn State has two games on ESPNU: Jan. 5 vs. Wisconsin (6 p.m.) and Feb. 20 vs. Ohio State (3 p.m.). For the third straight season, the entire Big Ten Tournament will be carried on BTN. PSU TO PLAY IN FOUR NHL BARNS Penn State will make four appearances in NHL buildings this season, all of which the Lions are familiar with PSU will play in the fourth annual Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff at Wells Fargo Center against Vermont (Nov. 29). The Lions are 2--0 in the event. The Nittany Lions will take part in the fourth Three Rivers Classic (Dec ), playing Robert Morris in the opener and either UMass Lowell or Clarkson the next night. For the second straight year, Penn State will play at The World s Most Famous Arena when it takes on Michigan in the second half of a historic doubleheader on Jan. 30. The basketball teams open the Big Ten Super Saturday Hoops & Hockey event at Noon, hockey plays at 7 p.m. Both games are on BTN. The 206 Big Ten Tournament is hosted by the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, home to the Minnesota Wild. STUDENT TICKETS SELL OUT IN FIVE Enthusiasm for Penn State hockey on campus was solidified when students purchased all,000 Roar Zone tickets in just five minutes on Sept. 3. Five days later, he made his pro debut playing against the Florida Panthers. Bailey scored his first NHL goal in the season finale vs. Montreal on April, 205. Bailey will begin the season with the AHL s Toronto Marlies captain Patrick Koudys begins his pro career with the ECHL s Indy Fuel. The Fuel are affiliated with the Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL s Rockford IceHogs. Penn State graduate PJ Musico received an invitation to an ECHL camp, representing one of three goalies for the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. Training camp began on Monday, Oct. 5 and the season opener is on Oct. 23. Musico was named the Derek Hines Unsung Hero. Eamon McAdam (203, New York Islanders) Mike Williamson (203, Vancouver) PA PUCK Seven Nittany Lion live in the Keystone State. Five reside in the greater Philadelphia region: Connor Varley (Lansdale), Eamon McAdam (Perkasie), Ricky DeRosa (Aston), David Thompson (Glen Mills) and Kevin Kerr (Bensalem). Two call the Pittsburgh area home: Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks) and Matt Mendelson (Upper St. Clair). CANADIAN INFLUENCE Seven Nittany Lion call Canada home, which is the most in any of the four PSU varsity years. Four hail from Alberta: James Robinson (Cochrane), David Glen (Fort Saskatchewan), Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park) and Mike Williamson (Leduc). Penn State has two from British Columbia: Curtis Loik (North Vancouver) and Derian Hamilton (Port McNeill). Luke Juha (Mississagua) is PSU s lone representative from Ontario. PACKING THE PEG Penn State has played to a sellout crowd in 33-of-36 home games, including 7 of 8 in season. More than 6,000 fans have filed into the arena on 20 occasions. In 204-5, Penn State ranks seventh in average attendance (6,030) and led the nation in building capacity percentage (04.3 percent). Only Quinnipiac (0.2) could boast a capacity percentage of 00 or more. Last season, Penn State had a season-total of 08,534 fans that have been to Pegula Ice Arena, which exceeded the 08,93 during the facility s inaugural campaign. 5 GOPSUSPORTS.COM penn state game notes WELCOME HOME Penn State opened the 5,782-seat Pegula Ice Arena with a 4- win against Army Oct., 203. The arena was brought to fruition through an initial $88 million donation the largest in University history in September 200 from Penn State alumnus Terry Pegula and his wife, Kim. The Pegulas added to that figure to bring their total donation to $02, supplying $90 million for the facility. The $90 million facility broke ground in early February 202 and was turned over to Penn State in September 203. THIS IS BIG TEN HOCKEY The Big Ten is in its third season entering In league action, each Big Ten team will play 20 league games, including 0 home contests. Big Ten teams are awarded three points for a regulation or overtime victory, two points for a shootout win and one point for a shootout loss. Big Ten schools have won a combined 23 national championships, more than any other league. The Big Ten Hockey Conference is the only major football conference to sponsor men s hockey. The 206 league tournament will take place at Xcel Energy Arena in St. Paul with the tournament champion earning the league s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. NEXT TIME OUT Penn State hosts its home opener with a twogame series against Notre Dame on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m.). AT PENN STATE His Nittany Lions exceeded expectations all season, garnering a winning season in overall action (8-5-4) and Big Ten play ( ), while earning the program s first national ranking. Despite being picked sixth in the preseason, Gadowsky s charges were in the hunt for a Big Ten title up until the final weekend of the season. Under Gadowsky s tutelage, junior Casey Bailey led the Big Ten in scoring and parlayed his outstanding season into a two-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, eventually scoring his first NHL goal in the season finale. Bailey was an All-Big Ten First Team honoree, while six other Nittany Lions earned honorable mention by the league coaches. Last season also saw Gadowsky reach the 200-win plateau in historic fashion when his Lions knocked off No. 4 UMass Lowell, 4- on Nov. 5, 204. The program s rise from its first year in the Big Ten to its sophomore campaign had gains of 0 wins overall and seven wins in conference play. Additionally, his Lions earned wins over every Big Ten team during the season including a season sweep of perennial power Wisconsin and a first win over Big Ten champion Minnesota on THON Night. During the campaign, the bench boss guided the Nittany Lions during the Big Ten Conference s first season. Penn State, which faced seven NCAA tournament teams and three Frozen Four participants, capped its season with a 2- double-overtime victory against Michigan in the Big Ten quarterfinals. In 202-3, Gadowsky led the Nittany Lions to a record during their inaugural NCAA Division I season. He guided the squad to several marquee victories, including wins against three future Big Ten teams (Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin). Penn State also topped Vermont in front of the largest crowd to watch a college hockey game in an NHL arena (9,529). In 20-2, Gadowsky steered Penn State s final season in the ACHA, while recruiting for the future. That team went AT PRINCETON Before coming to Happy Valley, Gadowsky served as Princeton s bench boss for seven seasons. In his first five years as head coach, the Tigers improved their win total in each season. In , Princeton captured a program-record 22 victories and earned its second straight NCAA tournament appearance. During the campaign, Gadowsky, who inherited a program that had a won a combined eight games in the two seasons prior to his arrival, guided Princeton to both the ECAC Hockey tournament and Ivy League crowns. The team earned its first NCAA tournament berth since 998, and Gadowsky garnered ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year honors and was a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, presented to Division I hockey s top coach. He was also named Inside College Hockey National Coach of the Year. While at Princeton, Gadowsky had more than 20 players go on to sign professional contracts, with Kevin Westgarth playing for the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings in Gadowsky also coached two ECAC and Ivy League Players of the Year as Lee Jubinville (2008) and Zane Kalemba (2009) each won the award in their junior seasons. After two rebuilding seasons, the 2002 CCHA Coach of the Year led the Nanooks, who were ranked th nationally at the end of the season, to their only 20-win campaign since joining the conference. He followed that up with 5 wins in and 6 victories his last season. In addition, Alaska twice hosted the first round of the CCHA playoffs in a three-year span, a feat never accomplished prior to Gadowsky s arrival. During his tenure with the Nanooks, his teams set school records for team grade-point average, wins and game attendance. BEFORE COLLEGE COACHING Before joining the collegiate ranks, Gadowsky spent three seasons (996-99) as head coach and director of hockey operations for the Fresno Falcons of the West Coast Hockey League. He led the squad to the playoffs in each season and left the team as the winningest coach in franchise history. In his first season, Gadowsky posted a 38-win campaign as he garnered WCHL Coach of the Year accolades. PLAYING CAREER The Edmonton, Alberta, native played collegiately at Colorado College from , serving as team captain as a senior, while also earning the team s Rodman Award, given for outstanding leadership and sportsmanship. The three-time WCHA All-Academic Team member collected 46 points in 34 career games.
