LAST YEAR IN EAST LANSING During its inaugural NCAA Division I season, Penn State traveled to Michigan State Jan , 2013 for its first road series against a future Big Ten team. The Lions dropped the first game, 5-3, before defeating the Spartans by a 3-2 margin on BTN in the finale. Forwards Casey Bailey (1g, 3a) and Max Gardiner (4a) paced the team with four points each during the series. Then-freshman netminder Matthew Skoff played both games for the Nittany Lions and corralled 31 shots in the Penn State victory. WELL-KNOWN NETMINDERS Penn State goaltender Matthew Skoff and Michigan State netminders Jake Hildebrand and Will Yanakeff all played for the USHL s Sioux City Musketeers during parts the season. Skoff and Hildebrand, both Pittsburgh-area natives, also played for Sioux City during the season and competed for the Pittsburgh Hornets youth hockey organization. GLEN FINDING GROOVE Sophomore forward David Glen, who ranked second on the team with 25 points in , has recorded points in back-to-back games for the first time this season. IN THE CIRCLE Redshirt junior Taylor Holstrom ranks sixth in the conference in faceoff winning percentage (.576). GOPHERS Eamon McAdam collected a combined 62 saves, including a career-high 42 stops Sunday, Jan. 12, in the Nittany Lions weekend series against No. 1 Minnesota. Big Ten teams are awarded three points for a regulation or overtime victory, two points for a shootout win and one point for a shootout loss. Big Ten schools have won a combined 23 national championships, more than any other league. The Big Ten Hockey Conference is the only BCS conference to sponsor men s hockey. The league tournament will take place at Saint Paul s Xcel Energy Center March with the tournament champion earning the league s automatic big to the NCAA tournament. Jensen s slapshot through traffic 3:02 into the first period gave the Nittany Lions the early 1-0 lead. FRESHMEN SHINE Several freshmen shined in their Penn State debuts vs. Army Oct. 11, Forward David Goodwin led Penn State with a goal and an assist, while linemate Zach Saar tallied an assist. Forward Dylan Richard and defenseman David Thompson also logged significant minutes in the victory. GETTING IT DONE EARLY In the team s first game, sophomore Curtis Loik tallied a shorthanded goal for Penn State, which only scored three shorthanded markers last season. The Nittany Lions scored their first shorthanded marker in their eighth game in WELCOME HOME Penn State opened the 5,782-seat Pegula Ice Arena with a 4-1 win against Army Oct. 11, The arena was brought to fruition through an $88 million donation - the largest in University history - in September 2010 from Penn State alumnus Terry Pegula and his wife, Kim. The $90 million facility broke ground in early February 2012 and was turned over to Penn State in September KEYSTONE STATE NATIVES Penn State boasts six Pennsylvania natives - the most from any state or province. The 2013 NHL Entry was held June at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. NHL HOPEFULS The second-year program boasts four NHL draft picks on the roster. In addition to McAdam, redshirt juniors Max Gardiner (2010, St. Louis) and Patrick Koudys (2011, Washington) and freshman Mike Williamson (2013, Vancouver) are current NHL prospects. EYES OF A NATION Penn State will appear on national TV at least 12 times (34 percent) during the season. The Nittany Lions will appear on the BTN at least seven times, the ESPN networks three times and NBC Sports Network twice. SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN The Nittany Lions will play at least 19 games against teams that have reached the NCAA Frozen Four since In all, Penn State will battle five teams that qualified for the 2013 NCAA tournament. Redshirt sophomore forward Eric Scheid (Alaska Anchorage) and redshirt junior defenseman Patrick Koudys (RPI) are the Nittany Lion transfers. ALL IN THE FAMILY Several Nittany Lions have family connections with the NHL. Max Gardiner s brother, Jake, plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tommy Olczyk s dad, Eddie, was a 16-year NHL veteran who helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup in Nate Jensen s father, David, appeared in 18 games over three seasons with the Minnesota North Stars.
