2 penn state HOCKEY PennStateMensHockey HOCKEY THIS WEEK IN HOCKEY Penn State will conclude a five-game stretch away from Hockey Valley when it travels to East Lansing for a two-game set against MSU. Both games are set for live video streams through BTN Plus, a subscription service. Both games can be heard live for free through GoPSUnow on wireless and connected devices. I M COMING HOME Penn State s lone Michigan native, Zach Saar (Richland) is set for the first of two trips back to the Mitten. PSU returns to Michigan to face the Wolverines March THE NITTANY LION ROAD WARRIORS Eleven of the final 14 regular-season games will be played away from Hockey Valley. Penn State is on the road this year and in all games away from Pegula Ice Arena. Penn State s program record five-game unbeaten road streak came to an end on Jan. 23 at Ohio State. PSU has split both its Big Ten away series. The Lions have yet to win a game at Michigan State since joining the Big Ten (0-4-0). Penn State is all-time at Munn Ice Arena. NITTANY LIONS VS. MICHIGAN STATE Penn State had had its goal and point scoring spread through its entire lineup against the Golden Gophers with 16 of 19 skaters who have played Minnesota tallying points. Penn State s leading scorers against Michigan State are David Goodwin (3g, 3a) and Eric Scheid (4g, 2a) with six points. Goodwin s plus-5 is also a team-best vs. MSU. Luke Juha s five assists are tops on the team against the Spartans. Just one Lion has played in all 12 contests against Michigan State: Tommy Olczyk. MINNESOTA SERIES RECAP A short-handed Penn State side was able to earn a historic split at Minnesota to stay within six points of the Big Ten lead entering the home stretch. On Friday night, Penn State tied the game midway through the first on a Chase Berger goal. PSU seemingly took the lead a couple minutes later, but the goal was wiped out due to goaltender interference. Minnesota went on to score three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 decision. In Saturday s game, Penn State never trailed, taking a 2-0 lead behind tallies from Matt Mendelson in the first and David Glen s G in the second. Glen s goal was the first of four in a four-minute stretch during the five-goal period. Minnesota tied it at two before Luke Juha regained PSU s advantage. A short-handed Justin Kloos goal evened the score entering the second intermission. Minnesota had its go-ahead goal in the third overturned on a Penn State coach s challenge due offside. Zach Saar scored the game-winning goal with 3:49 remaining off a Chase Berger faceoff win. Kenny Brooks added an empty-netter of a Berger feed to seal the 5-3 win. Eamon McAdam made 36 saves in victory to become Penn State s first 10-game winner. Four Nittany Lions tallied multiple points: David Goodwin (2a), Juha (1g, 1a), Berger (2a) and Saar (1g, 1a). Defenseman David Thompson finished with a game-high plus-3 rating and four blocked shots. Juha had a game-high five blocks. Penn State has now won in every Big Ten venue and split the season series with Minnesota, NITTANY LIONS BALANCED OFFENSE The Nittany Lions may not have a point scorer in the top 60 nationally, but have 14 skaters who have tallied 10 points this season. Following a tough 16-game stretch where the Spartans went , MSU has gone the past two weeks. Last weekend, MSU upset No. 6 Michigan, 3-2, in overtime in Detroit before falling 4-1 at Munn Ice Arena the next night. Michigan State is at home, in true road games and on neutral ice. The Spartans are scoring 2.4 goals per game, while allowing 3.5 a game. MSU averages 29.6 shots on net, but allows 32.7 shots on goal per game.
