2 Jason Childs, a 2001 graduate of Dickinson College, prepares to kick off his third season as Presbyterian College s head coach of the men s lacrosse team. Childs has guided the Blue Hose men s lacrosse program through its first two NCAA Division II seasons, leading the program to a school record in wins in year two and its first winning streak during the 2007 season. Childs also coached Brian Foley to All-Conference status in the Deep South Conference in It marked the first time that a Blue Hose lacrosse player had received All-Conference accolades. A native of Baltimore, Md., Childs came to the Blue Hose from nearby Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. During his tenure with the Saints, he served as the assistant coach. He helped lead the program to a two-year mark of 24-2, the 2004 Deep South Conference (DSC) title, and a runner-up finish for the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2003 and He also served as the school s men s and women s cross country coach during the 2004 fall season. 3 MIKE GONGAS Mike Gongas Assistant Coach Mike Gongas begins his first season as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College. Gongas joins the Blue Hose men s lacrosse program from Suffolk Community College where he served as the Offensive Coordinator and First Assistant. During his time at Suffolk Community College, Gongas helped with all aspects of coaching, including recruiting student-athletes, practice and game preparation and any other duties assigned by the head coach. Prior to taking the position at Suffolk Community College, Gongas was at Adelphi University where he graduated with honors in December of 2007 with a Bachelors of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in Sports Management. Gongas, who played his first two years at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, received many awards during his time with the Panthers, including earning second-team USILA All-America honors in 2007 after leading the Panthers in points (49) and assists (30). A first-team All-East Coast Conference selection at attack in 2007 he was second on the Panthers last year with 19 goals. 4 MATT LINDNER Matt Lindner Assistant Coach A 1998 graduate of Salisbury University, Matt Lindner is in his second season as an assistant coach on the Blue Hose men s lacrosse team. Lindner is the program s defensive coordinator. Lindner played lacrosse at Salisbury, graduating in 1998 with a bachelors of science in Chemistry. He was founder and president of the Salisbury s men s lacrosse club. After college, Lindner began his coaching career at Northeast High School in Anne Arundel County in Maryland as an assistant coach. After two years at Northeast, he accepted an assistant coaching position at the Severn School as a junior varsity assistant in 2002 and then in 2003 as the varsity assistant under Jaime McNealy. In 2004, Lindner returned to Northeast for his first head coaching position. That season, he led the Eagles to the school s first 2A/3A Regional Championship. Shortly after leading Northeast to the Maryland State Semifinals, Lindner accepted a teaching position as well as a head coaching position at Hilton Head High School in South Carolina. In 2005, he took his team to the South Carolina Lacrosse League State Championship and won the school s fourth consecutive state championship. Lindner finished out the 2006 season at Hilton Head before accepting his current assistant coach position at PC. Lindner and his wife, Jessica, reside in Simpsonville, S.C. They have a daughter, Kate Skylar, who was born on Sept. 12, Caroline Spearman is in her second year as an assistant athletic trainer with the Blue Hose sports medicine staff. She is the primary sports medicine contact for women s soccer and men s lacrosse at PC. Spearman came to PC after earning her masters degree in Sports Administration from Belmont University in Nasheville, Tenn. While completing that degree she served as a graduate assistant at nearby Vanderbilt University. Spearman mainly worked with the Commodore football team. She was also the primary athletic trainer for the VU tennis team. Additionally, she assisted in all of the day-today needs of the training room. Spearman holds a B.S. degree in sports medicine/athletic training from Valdosta State University. During her time at Valdosta State, Spearman served as the trainer for the football and women's basketball teams. She also served as the athletic trainer for nearby Lowndes High School in addition to working an internship at the University of Mississippi BLUE HOSE LACROSSE

5 2008 OUTLOOK The Presbyterian Men s Lacrosse Program will look to start the transition to NCAA Division I lacrosse this spring. The 2007 Blue Hose squad recorded a 4-10 record last year with its first-ever winning streak set. Jason Childs will be at the helm for his third season and has his Blue Hose ready to compete against its toughest schedule thus far in the young program s history. Childs will again have a young squad with just four seniors set to graduate. The team had a successful fall, and Childs seems very happy with what was accomplished. We competed in our fall scrimmages this past season, noted Childs. We played both Limestone and Mars Hill tough, and were happy with what came of it. It is always difficult to play your first contest, but other than a little nerves we looked pretty sharp. Jason Childs arrived in Clinton after a successful two-year stint as an assistant for the seven-time reigning Deep South Conference Champion Limestone College. It was there where Childs learned to take charge as he was put at the helm of an offensive group that continued to set records in Division II lacrosse. Childs will need to rely on those experiences as the Blue Hose schedule will feature perennial powers such as Dartmouth, Duke, Hobart and Denver. The offense has continued to develop and Childs is hoping the addition of a couple key recruits will help ignite the offense. However, even with the offensive additions to the team the defense will again be the strong point to this team. Matt Lindner will return for his second year as the Defensive Coordinator. Childs was pleased with the defense last year, but he is looking to see continued improvement with age and experience. One key addition to the program will be Mike Gongas appointment to the Blue Hose staff. Gongas will work with Childs and the offense. He will look to establish an offense that was talented, but very young. Mike will bring 2008 Roster No. Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Yr. Hometown/High School 1 Athens, Jon G Fr. Arnold, Md. (Greenville) a brilliant playing career to coaching, and we will look to use his knowledge in everything that we do, remarked Childs. His excitement and commitment to this place is unmatched without question, and that is something we will use during this year especially. Attack The attack will be young to say the least, but will return everyone from last year s squad. The attack will be lead by Sean Mulford (Loyola). Mulford is a crafty and shifty attackman who can dodge to shoot or feed. He will be teamed up with returner Jeremy Metcalfe (Harrison) and newcomer Devin Pinkston (Notre Dame Academy) who both had a great fall. Pinkston has a knack for finding the open man, while Metcalfe is a natural finisher on the left side of the goal. Sophomore Jake White (Overlea) also had a very good fall and will look to see some time as the fourth attackman. Casey Minick (Kennesaw Mountain) had a very impressive fall campaign, and INAUGURAL NCAA DIVISION I SEASON

6 BLUE HOSE LACROSSE 2008 OUTLOOK will look to compete with Metcalfe on the left side for serious playing time. Midfield In what will be the theme this year, the Blue Hose will have a very young group in between the lines. One exception to that youth will be team leader Marc Handel (Quinnipiac). Handel, who did not play during the 2007 campaign, is a seasoned veteran having transferred from NCAA Division I Quinnipiac University. After a great fall, Handel is poised to lead the young midfield unit. Ben Ewing, a high school All-American (Pace), and Brian Foley (Myers Park) will help Handel put points on the boards. Foley, a returning All Conference player, is looking to have a great sophomore season. His totals last season were impressive with over 50 points as a freshman. Ewing too had a great freshman year, winning over 60 percent of his draws and tallying 19 goals. Although the midfield is not as deep as Childs would like he still sees positives as he looks at the group as a whole. Newcomer Cory Stemshorn (Greenville) will look to add another threat to the offense. Childs thinks he had a great fall as he adjusted to the college game. Cory came from a newer program where he was the guy, said Childs. Then he comes in here and he had to adjust that took a little bit of time, but I think he is ready to have a great spring. Childs also added Paul Armstrong (Eckerd), a solid two way middie with great size and speed. Armstrong will look to find time to balance out the top two lines of midfield. Senior Walton Crosby will look to start his final campaign with a great fall under his belt. His impact on this team is something Childs could not understate, noting it is hard to imagine this program without him on the field everyday. He has become a good lacrosse player, and will help lead this team to where it goes. I could not be happier with his development and his commitment to this lacrosse program. I am not looking forward to losing him. Crosby will look to anchor the third line of middies, where his age and experience will help guide his line mates. Those line mates will be Billy Rinaldi (Shades Valley) and Bryce Simantel (Calvert Hall). Steve Getty (Northview) will look to crack time with this line. Childs loves his smarts and thinks he could have an impact in any game. Defense This is the strength of the Blue Hose Lacrosse Team. It is not coincidence that this group is the pillar of the men s lacrosse program. The group will be led by senior Carl Spilly (Herkimer CC), a very talented and smart defenseman, who had a great junior season. Alongside Spilly will be Andrew Tobias (Northeast Guilford High School) who has started every game of his career at PC. Carl and Drew are very smart, tough, and athletic defenders, said Childs. It has been a joy to watch them develop their leadership skills, and I think they will help lead this team wherever it is going. David Hahn (Essex) will fill the third spot on the defense for the Blue Hose this year. He has a great understanding of the game and is a great leader. Childs believes that Hahn may be the link to a very good defense. Andy Halperin (Riverwood) will look to spell time for the defense. A converted defensive midfielder, Halperin had a tremendous spring while picking up the pole for the first time. Returnee Robert Watters (Wesleyan) will look to push and compete for significant playing time. Watters has great size and a great attitude to go with it. He learned alot from a good freshman campaign, and will be looking to add minutes in every game. Senior Reece LeMay (Myrtle Beach) will look to close out his playing career while fighting for a starting spot. He is another person Childs will sorely miss next year. Reece has been here from the beginning and I cannot

7 2008 OUTLOOK imagine practice or games without him, Childs said. He has been a staple here, and has been a tremendous worker since day one. Defensive Midfield The Defensive Midfield unit position will again be solid this year for the Blue Hose. The athletic group of defensive specialists will be led by Billy Schilling (Hilton Head), a very solid longstick defender with great speed and athleticism. Schilling, a high school All-American selection, will look to make most of the runs, while splitting time with David Hahn. Chris Williams (Socastee), Nick Plaisted (Socastee), and John Mark-Dias (Greenville) will all look to return to the defensive midfield this year. Childs will look to lean on them to push the ball in transition and get his offense moving early. This is my favorite group to work with, remarked Childs. They are like sponges out there, learning all the time, and they care about working harder than anyone else. You just cannot teach that. Andrew Canan (Kirkwood) and Travis Schmidt (Harrison) will look to round out the defensive midfield this spring. Goalie Jon Athens (Dunkirk) will start for the Blue Hose in the net. Athens is a high school All-American and will look to continue those successful ways this year. He is quick and athletic and has Childs very happy about his time at PC. Jon is as solid a goaltender as I could ever wish, Childs remarked. He has all the potential in the world, and we are very lucky to have him. He makes the saves he should and the saves he should not. Joey McMillan (White Knoll) will look to be the back-up this year for the Blue Hose in the net. The Future This year s squad has Coach Childs very excited about the future of the program. I am very excited to get this thing underway, said Childs. We have been working hard and the boys are ready to compete in DI. I love this place and the guys on the team. We have a great coaching staff and I think we have really gotten this thing off the ground in a very positive way. We may struggle a little with the transition to Division I, but once we get accustomed to it the future will be very bright. INAUGURAL NCAA DIVISION I SEASON 7

12 PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE Presbyterian College is located in Clinton, South Carolina, a community of 10,000 nestled in upstate South Carolina. The college s beautiful 240-acre campus and a national reputation for academic excellence attract 1,200 students representing 30 states and eleven foreign countries. International study programs include China, Oxford, Spain, and Cuba. The distinguished sons and daughters of Presbyterian College are outstanding leaders in business and industry, education, athletics, journalism, medicine, the military, the Church, and public service. Presbyterian College, home of the fighting Blue Hose, continues to live its motto of While we live, we serve, producing servant leaders for the world today. PC was born of the dreams of a humble pastor determined to restore a territory plundered by war. In year-old Rev. William Plumer Jacobs arrived in Clinton to serve as pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Eight years later Jacobs and the church founded the Clinton High School Association to provide the young people of Laurens County a place to receive a Christianbased, liberal arts education. In 1880 the Clinton High School Association became first Clinton College, and then in 1890 the Presbyterian College of South Carolina. Coeducational instruction occurred from the start. In keeping with its goal to produce graduates of high moral character, Presbyterian College adopted an honor code, a student-run system still flourishing today, to govern students academic and social lives. Today s PC curriculum includes international programs, internships, and unique cultural and arts opportunities. New facilities for living (Senior Hall and Carol International House), athletic play (new Bailey Memorial Stadium, Martin Soccer Stadium), study (Lassiter Science Hall, the Arnold Archives and Thomason Library), and infrastructure support (information technology) benefit the PC and Clinton community alike. New professorships have strengthened the already strong faculty. The college is home to six South Carolina Professors of the Year, more than twice the number of any public or private institution in the state. Financial aid resources insure that qualified students BLUE HOSE LACROSSE have access to a PC education. Blue Hose sports have always made history. In the 1960s PC s intercollegiate tennis program was ranked number 2 in the nation. PC provides the community a rich cultural life through lectures, art exhibits, concerts and theatrical performances. The college s library and intramural facilities serve local residents, while college faculty and staff serve on many local boards. The college is involved in local economic development, recognizing the importance of its roll as a Clinton citizen as well as a significant employer. Presbyterian College holds fast to its core mission and high standards of integrity, celebrating its motto: Dum Vivimus Servimus, or While we live, we serve. Service to community and each other are hallmarks of faculty and students alike, and PC has one of the oldest student volunteer organizations in the country in Student Volunteer Services (SVS). 14 PC ATHLETIC FACILITIES The Presbyterian College Athletic Department is recognized as having some of the finest athletic facilities in the Southeast. The 16-sport athletic department s athletic facilities include the 2,500-seat Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center, Callaway Tennis Courts, Edens Field at Martin Soccer Stadium, the PC Baseball Complex, and the PC Softball Complex. Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center The facility bears the name of the late Ross E. Templeton 24, distinguished alumnus and business leader of Charlotte and Clinton, who was a life-long devotee of PC sports. Completed in 1975, the facility serves as both a sports and academic center. The Furman Pinson Arena seats more than 2,000 spectators for men s and women s basketball as well as volleyball. In 2000, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Staton provided a new floor for the facility. Ample classrooms, multi-purpose space, and equipment serve the physical education instruction program. Adjoining Templeton Center on the right is the new Johnson-Callaway Center, an 11,500-square-foot addition containing men s Ross E. Templeton P.E. Center and women s locker rooms and 10 coaches offices. Located directly behind this facility is the Kemper D. Lake, M.D. Sports Medicine Center which houses PC s Sports Medicine staff who maintain the health of all Blue Hose athletes. The Mabry-Smith-Yonce Center is the 6,000-squarefoot facility adjoining to the left of the Templeton Center that was built in This facility provides meeting space for student organizations, alumni groups, athletic teams, and special events. It also includes a Furman Pinson Court kitchen, restrooms, and a storage area. Templeton Weight Facility Located in the Templeton Center, the new weight room which opened in October of 2004, replaced the facility s racquetball court that was no longer in service. The 38 x 70 addition provides an additional 2,660 square feet of weightlifting area for the college s 16 varsity athletic teams. The original weight room, located at the east end of the Furman B. Pinson Court, provides 2,400 square feet of workout space that will give the Blue Hose athletic teams the flexibility to work out in both weight room facilities while avoiding scheduling conflicts. The new weight room includes custom equipment designed and installed by ArrowHawk of Laurens, S.C. Templeton Weight Facility Templeton Tennis Center Located next to the Ross E. Templeton Center, the Templeton Tennis Center is home for the nationally ranked Blue Hose men s and women s tennis programs. Templeton Courts has served as host for several regular season and postseason events, including hosting the SAC Tennis Championships from Templeton Tennis Center Martin Stadium Martin Soccer Stadium, seating approximately 400, was constructed in 2000 by the Kenneth Martin Family, of Greenville, S.C. Dr. Robert M. Edens 77, of Columbia, S.C. provided the soccer playing field. The facility is home for the Blue Hose men s and women s soccer programs which have received national recognition over the years. This facility has also served as host of several postseason events at the high school and BLUE HOSE LACROSSE

15 PC Softball Complex The PC Softball Complex is located on the 31-acre Young Intramural Park. This facility is home to the Blue Hose Softball program and was built in 1997 when the sport was still at club level. The facility has a new scoreboard located behind the rightfield fence which was donated by Pepsi-Cola of Greenville, S.C., prior to the 2005 season. Behind the scoreboard are batting cages, while the complex also has three other softball fields which can be used for practice or tournament competition. The complex has served host to many tournaments, including the Food Lion/ SAC Tournament from and in PC ATHLETIC FACILITIES Johnson Field at Old Bailey Stadium Johnson Field was named for Walter A. Johnson, who came to Presbyterian College in 1915 when he was 22 and served as coach and athletic director for 43 years. President John McSween dedicated Bailey Stadium at the opening home football game of the 1928 season. The 3,000 seat facility, which is now used as the home site by the Blue Hose men and women s lacrosse teams, resulted mainly from a $10,000 gift from W.J. Bailey, Clinton banker and industrialist, as a memorial to his son William Cyrus Bailey, The Johnson Field at Old Bailey Stadium Bailey Foundation provided for the renovation of the track and stadium in The facility served as the home field for the Blue Hose football program from its opening prior to the 1928 season until the first two games of the 2002 season. During that time, the Blue Hose compiled a record of , good for a.626 winning percentage. PC Baseball Complex The Presbyterian College baseball team plays its home games at one of the most attractive facilities in South Carolina, the PC Baseball Complex. The Complex is located at the eastern end of the college campus and was built in the late 1980 s. The facility has served as host to numerous postseason events at the collegiate and high school level over the years. The complex boasts a covered batting facility down the first base line and a 10- inning scoreboard located behind the leftfield fence. PC Softball Complex Bailey Memorial Stadium During the 2002 season, Presbyterian College opened the new 6,500-seat Bailey PC Baseball Complex Memorial Stadium. This state-of-the-art facility features a multi-level press box, a spacious field house, and concession stands for home and visiting fans. Guarding the entrance to Bailey Memorial Stadium is a 15-foot statue, which was graciously donated by Mr. Irwin Belk, of the Blue Hose mascot, nicknamed Cyrus. Scotsman Club members will have the opportunity to watch exciting Blue Hose football from the loggia level, which has open access to the home stands and a superb view of the playing field. The second story of the press box is the president s level. Special guests will enjoy Blue Hose football from the plush surroundings of the private president s box. Also located on this level is the game operations box, home and visiting radio booths which are located on each end of this level, and the sports information box. The top level of the press box is the film level, which offers coaches boxes and a filming area for both teams. The playing surface, Claude Crocker Field, is made of bermuda grass. Located at the west end of Crocker Field is the Yonce Field House. The 9,000-square-foot facility houses both home and visiting football teams with locker room facilities. A doctor s office and a sports medicine taping room are also located in the field house. INAUGURAL NCAA DIVISION I SEASON 15

20 WHAT IS A BLUE HOSE? THE BLUE HOSE A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose. Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and Ray Frank in his book, What s In A Nickname delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish named the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia... [quoting from Walter Johnson s letter] It was about the second or third year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.... in later years Stocking became abbreviated to the Hose, particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950 s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled The Spirit of PC. The piece by Hammet articulated that, Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White Sox and Red Sox in baseball). Coach Johnson s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase Blue Stocking Presbyterian goes back informally quite a few years in the denomination s history. Nevertheless, PC s athletic nickname was shortened to Blue Hose in BLUE HOSE LACROSSE
