1 Fall 2012 Volume IX, Issue 2 SO. CAL S BEST HEAD TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Southern California puts its best foot forward October 24-28, when champions of the Southwest Division playdowns compete for the National men s and women s Singles and Pairs Championships, at San Diego s Balboa Park. Representing SWD men are the Pairs teams of Mert Isaacman (Newport Harbor LBC) & Phil Dunn (Santa Monica) and Neil Furman (San Diego) & Jason Adams (Laguna Beach), and Singles players Scott Roberts (Laguna Beach) and Steve Smith (San Diego). Taking the green for SWD women are: Pairs Kottia Spangler (Riverside) & Anne Nunes (Laguna Beach) and Patricia Cronshaw & Mary DeLisle (both Mackenzie Park); Singles Eva Lee (Newport Harbor) and Carol Poto (Long Phil Dunn & Mert Isaacman Beach). The National Championships (formerly U.S. Championships) feature Singles and Pairs competitors representing each of the United States seven USLBA Divisions. Every Division sends one Pairs team and one Singles player to the competitions, while the Southwest Division (So. Calif.), because of its larger membership, is granted two Neil Furman & Jason Adams sets of players for each of the events. Opening ceremonies are Wednesday October 24, and competitions will be continuous through the 28th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Spectators are invited and seating is free. The National Championships are sanctioned by the United States Lawn Steve Smith & Scott Roberts Bowls Association. SPORTS CELEBRATIONS A favorite un-favorite lawn bowling pass-time is trying to figure out why, after 700 years, the sport hasn t caught on yet with the masses. An unscientific explanation might have something to do with the way we celebrate when things go good! Basketball players, for example, rejoice by getting angry. You ve seen the look on a player s face after his slam dunk. Anger! He (or she) appears to be filled with vitriol and contempt. Acrobatic shot or critical 3-pointer, the body tenses. The player poses. Fists clench. Mouth opens wide enough to swallow the ball. Jersey top is yanked, and the chest is pounded. This is one happy guy! On the gridiron, a quarterback sack, preventing a pass competition, or a bone crushing tackle by the defense is often underscored by a foot stomping frenzy. Offensive players party after a touchdown with signature rituals, such as spiking the football, stupidlooking end-zone dances, or a leap into the paying spectators. Baseball pros arm bash, hand slap, jump-bump their 200 lb. bodies after an RBI, sacrifice fly or grand slam, and monkey pile at walk-off victories. A soccer goal is followed by a furious dash by the scorer to the sidelines, ending in a belly slide or hands-up fall-to-the knees in jubilation. Ladies have been known to rip off their cont d on page 2 - Celebrations Mary DeLisle & Patricia Cronshaw Anne Nunes & Kottia Spangler Carol Poto Eva Lee

2 Page 2 of 6 Celebrations - cont d from page 1 jersey tops. An ice-hockey goal turns the scoring team into group bedlam. Winner of an important tennis match falls to his/her knees or spread-eagles on their back. Lawn bowlers shake hands. Make what you will of this review of angry, violent and aggressive happy habits. But their effect on sport competitors has become commonplace, and the effect on the fan-spectator public is pervasive. Collegiate athletes duplicate the practices of the pros. High schoolers repeat what they see in pro and college ranks. Little Leaguers and AYSO kids mimic the big guys. It s truly a shame if comporting ourselves with pleasantry and dignity on our field of play has stymied the progress of the sport of bowls. But let s face it, we aren t living in the 1620s, 1780s or even 1950s. Would a little excitement hurt? Basketball hall of fame star Charles Barkley once complained that he was no role model when a youngsterin-trouble cited him as an idol, as example of behavior. Fortunately or unfortunately, star athletes (and all types of celebrities) surrender their personal right to how the public defines them. They are to be praised or condemned, adored or neglected by their behavior, as viewed or perceived. I don t expect I ll be the first guy to spike his bowl or bumpjump chests with my partner the next time he or I make a terrific shot or win a match. But, I just might sneak in a little victory quick-step here and there. It s a start! THE UMP STUMPER Playing Out of Turn U.S. Umpire in Chief Conrad Melton recently requested an interpretation from the World Bowls Laws Committee regarding a player delivering a bowl out of turn. This is the response he received: The Law which deals with playing out of turn is Law However, Law 47.1 deals only with the situation in which one player has played out of turn and the mistake is noticed either before that player s bowl has come to rest (Law ) or after the bowl has come to rest but before the next player to play has played their bowl (Laws and ). In the situation described, two players have played out of turn before the mistake is noticed. Law 47.1 does not deal with this situation. The U.S. query, therefore, relates to a situation that is not covered by the Laws. In line with the Introduction to the Foreword of the Laws, we need to use common sense and a spirit of fair play to decide on the appropriate course of action. The appropriate course of action would be to have player B play their second bowl, followed by player A playing their second bowl, and so on. This course of action is consistent with the intent of the Laws ( ) and avoids either player being penalized by losing the right to play a bowl as a result of what one trusts has been a genuine mistake by both parties. In the U.S. query, it is suggested that Law is the proper law to deal with the situation described. Law 47.4 deals with situations in which a player fails to play a bowl (in previous editions of the Laws it was called Omitting to Play ). Law deals [with] the situation in which a player fails to play a bowl before the result of the end is decided. Law deals with the situation in which both teams play a bowl before it is noticed that another player has failed to play a bowl. BIG MONEY TOURNAMENTS The term big money tournaments has had a long shelf-life in Southern California lawn bowling rhetoric. It is usually heard or written vis a vis a discussion about the values of competitive tournaments and tournament bowlers. Hello! Lawn bowling in America has NO big money tournaments. The upcoming weeklong U.S. Open, the grandest and richest event on the USLBA national calendar, will probably have a total purse of about $25,000, to be divided up between top male and female finishers in assorted flights of six different events. The winners champions of each of the six events (three men s and three women s) will probably net about $300 apiece. Big money tournament!? The sports section of this week s L.A. Times features details of a PGA 4.6 million golf event. Not the biggest PGA tournament; just the run-of-the-mill between-the-bigones event. Some non-prominent pro took first place honors and won $680,000. The last place finisher, I think #72, took home $14,000-plus. That s BIG MONEY! Of course, what constitutes big money depends upon one s perception. Hey, there are So Cal bowlers who think a $20 annual membership fee constitutes big money! Bowlers -- club and tournament types alike -- are forever lamenting how cum their wonderful game has never caught on with the mainstream. It has so many elements of recreational and sporting pleasure, yet it is all but anonymous in this country. At best, it s referred to as old people s activity. Life offers few guarantees. But if bowlers, themselves, had more respect for their favored recreation; took some pride in the achievements of the top-of-the-line players; contributed a whole $20 (the price of a large bucket of the Colonel s chicken) annually to the membership pot; and spoke positively about the sport, maybe Bowls would have a chance to grow itself. Be proud of those who excel at bowls. They re our Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelsons and Amy Alcotts; our Billie Jean Kings, Williams sisters, Federer and Nadel. They set the example of how the game can be played. Their competitive tournaments take nothing away from everyday club bowling. They bring attention and respect to our sport. Attention and respect remind municipal parks departments and gated property owners that the bowling greens they maintain are good for their community. Big Money? It should only happen!
