Thanks to the coordination efforts of our 2008 Open House Chairman Len Cormier, the extraordinary work of Dave Stennes to oversee all of the activities necessary to get our club in tip top shape before the Open House, as well as a lot of hard work and help from many others, Saturday on the Green was a huge success. We had 40 members helping that day, during which time over 100 families, singles and couples visited our club, resulting in an additional 44 new members. If we add the 14 new members that joined prior to the Open House, the Class of 2008 is currently standing at 58 members strong, bring our total club membership to 190 people. But now that the Open House is behind us, the hard work begins. Trying to integrate that many new members into the club at the same time is truly challenging and needs the support and help from the entire membership. Sally and Clark Westcott, your Mentoring Program Chairpersons, have already assigned all of our new members to a Mentor and has given most of them their club information packets and keys. I know many of the Mentors have made contact with their new members and have already bowled with them once or twice during the past few weeks. A special thanks to everyone who volunteered to be a Mentor this year without you, it would be an overwhelming task. Charlie Herbert did an excellent job in conducting his Bowl 101 Class for most of our new members on Sunday May 18, but now that we have some of the basics behind us, we all have to make that extra effort to keep the bowls rolling toward the Jack. I would like to request that everyone go out of their way during the next few months to make our new members feel welcome by introducing yourselves and talking with them as you see them around the club. Your friendship and interest in our new members is what will keep our membership growing in the years to come, as well as help to retain our status as the premier Lawn Bowling Club in the Southwest Division. Congratulations to all on a job well done John Groothuis

2 Welcome to New Members - By Jan Hargraves Page 2 We are so pleased to welcome the following two new members to our club. Stephanie Bangert 1242 Rutland Rd. #2 Newport Beach, Member News - by Ray Norris Dan Garrett 1964 Port Provence Pl. Newport Beach, Editor s note - These two new members were voted into the club during the May Board meeting and consequently their addresses were available for this issue of the Yellow Jacket. See also the New Member item on page 3. John Groothuis appears to be recovering nicely from his back surgery to relieve pressure on nerves causing pain in his legs. He is still a little stiff as the incisions heal but is planning on making his annual fishing trip with his buddies in a couple of weeks. John tells me his doctor limits him to lifting five pounds so he can only catch small fish. (That s his story and he will stick to it.) Jim Kelley, as treatment for prostrate cancer, is scheduled to have his prostate removed in June. Jim says that his surgeon was recently hired by Hoag from the City of Hope to run their new state-of-the-art robotic surgery program. Theresa Casanova asked me to share this following message: I just returned from Philadelphia, to see my first grand daughter receive her Doctors degree in Medicine from Drexel University in Philly. She chose Newark Delaware for her Internship as it is close to her home. In a few days I will be going to Santa Cruz, CA to attend my first grandson s graduation from UCSC when he will receive his Bachelors in Science Degree and to San Francisco for a few days to visit my family. Will be in Newport the end of June on business, but will stay a few more days visiting friends, and Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club and do some bowling. Mary Dooley and Terry Heeley are in Washington DC this week to enjoy the sights and to see the city that the British destroyed in Terry tells me he is sorry that the British acted like bullies back then and hopes that we can forgive the Brits for their past transgressions against a small country like the USA. Also, Cathy and John MacDonald will be in DC during the same week on a visit to their grand daughter s high school graduation. I hope the four of them have a chance to get together and practice some joint touring together in preparation for their South Africa trip in November. A reminder, if you have anything you would like to share with other club members; such as celebrations, births, travels or illness that will keep you away from the greens for a while; simply me at ranorris@ix.netcom.com and I ll share the news in my monthly Member News column. Thanks for sharing South Africa Tour - Hosts: Ivan & Maryna Hyland - (Bowls, Safari & More) - Departs (approx) Nov Returns (approx) Dec 18 Enjoy Polo-Ski Tours and Travel. If you want to play with specific persons, do not call in and leave your name please make your own arrangements ahead of time. 4 Wayne and Claire Hogg - By Chuck Muser Page 4 On May 2 nd Newport Harbor LBC hosted a reception for newlyweds Wayne and Claire Hogg of Scotland, U. K. Wayne, you may recall from the MAP International tournament which was held on our greens last September. He just recently bowled as lead on the winning triples team in the world championships in New Zealand. During the MAP, while Wayne was busy bowling (and placing third in the singles and third in pairs with partner Grant Logan) his then fiancé Claire was sunbathing in the spectators seats while keeping score. The delightful couple charmed our members then, as they did at the reception this May. Before coming to Newport Beach the honeymooners first traveled to Las Vegas for some of the recreation provided by that city. After spending a few days being escorted around Orange County by their local host, Phil Luth, they flew to New York for a bit of sight-seeing before returning to Scotland. While at the reception Wayne, who said he had not bowled since mid March, was persuaded to bowl a few. He then proceeded to show us why he is a world champion. Our thanks to Phil and to barbeque master Brian Stewart for setting up a fine party. 5 Open House A Success - By Chuck Muser Page 5 As we know now, the open house held by our club, and most of the clubs in the Southwest Division, on May 10 th, was a resounding success. Division president Mert Isaacman tells us that over three hundred new members signed up that day. Here at NHLBC we persuaded forty to join us in playing the ancient game of bowls. Many thanks must go to the dynamic duo of Myrna Chan and Len Cormier for the gargantuan task of organizing the day and directing the labor of what seemed to be the cast of thousands of club members who worked through the day. (Myrna and Len get a special award for having an affinity for herding cats.) They, in turn, are grateful to that cast of thousands who turned out to assist in making it a glorious day. Now, we turn our labors to making the new members feel welcome, this through our mentoring program, ably organized by Sally and Clark Wescott, and by helping them through their first encounters in organized play. And, let it be known, we are allowed to win even though they are new, that is, if we can beat them. Some, your correspondent has noticed, are pretty good already.
