1 Fall 2007 Volume IV, Issue 4 SO. CALIFORNIANS WIN A PAIR OF TITLES AT U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS THE 2008 U.S. CHAMPIONS: (l-r) Women s Pairs, Eva Ho & Kim Heiser (Southern California), Singles, Jackie Tucker (Florida); Men s Pairs, Bob & Dick Sayer (Rhode Island), and Singles, Jim Olson (Southern California). Southern California bowlers enjoyed success in two of four events at the United States Championships competitions, held the final week of October in Sun City, AZ. San Diego s Jim Olson won the U.S. Men s Singles, while Eva Lee and Kim Heiser of Laguna Beach took home the Women s Pairs title. Olson s victory was the first U.S. Singles win by a Southern Californian since he won the same event in The victory for the Lee-Heiser tandem marked the Southwest Division s fourth consecutive Women s Pairs title, and seventh in the last nine years. Northeast Division reps, Bob and Dick Sayer, won the Men s Pairs. The brothers won their first Pairs title in Florida s Jackie Tucker took Women s Singles honors. It was the first Singles crown for a Southeast Division woman in 21 years, and only the second since the Women s Championships began in The Southwest Division (So. California) qualified two Index sets of Singles and Pairs teams for this year s championships. In the hunt, but falling short were: Women s Singles - Katy Stone and Heather Stewart. Men s Singles Mert Isaacman. Women s Pairs Robin Olson and Tanya Hill. Men s Pairs Bill Hiscock and Gery Wagner, Liam Courtney and Bill Brault. The Lee-Heiser vistory in Women s Pairs was not without Southern California drama. Both SWD entries finished regular play in a dead heat, each with 5 wins and 2 losses, requiring a special playoff. The extra match went down to the wire, with Lee and Heiser edging Olson and Hill The United States Championships Tournament is played annually, matching top qualifying players from each of USLBA s seven divisions in a round-robin format. By virtue of its large membership, the Southwest Division is the only division that qualifies two sets of Singles players and Pairs teams for the event. 2 Page 2 of 8 ASKED: If lawn bowling is one of the world s oldest, if not the oldest, continuously played sport activity, how has it changed from the days of Shakespeare and Sir Francis Drake? CRYSTAL BOWL: According to historical documentation the answer is: very little! Yes, there have been a few rule tweaks here and there, bowls are made from synthetics instead of wood, and electric mowers do a niftier job manicuring grass than peasants with scissors. But the game, itself, is played virtually the same way Willy and Fran played it back in the day. Indoor bowls is the 21st century s growth (survival) hope for the sport, and played enthusiastically in most countries that offer the original game with the exception of the United States. Aside from an occasional indoor tournament, American indoor lawn bowling of note has been confined to an annual Las Vegas event that took place on the convention hall carpet of the old Hacienda Casino-Hotel during the 1980s. Presently, our top bowlers, under the banner of the PBA, vie for invitations to international indoor events by qualifying at outdoor artificial carpet venues. ASKED: How do you modernize a game that s been played the same way for centuries? CRYSTAL BOWL: No one seems to have figured that out yet. Not Americans, not anyone. But there have been some creative ideas that appear to be causing a positive stir. THE CRYSTAL BOWL Among them: Matches played in sets instead of double digit (18, 21, etc.) ends. At the top levels of bowls, Pairs, Triples and Rinks matches are often being played in the best of three 7 to 9 end sets. Singles get a similar set treatment, except played for points first to 9 or 11 points wins a set. In other words, a lot like tennis. In this type of scenario, the first player/team to win two sets is the victor of the match. If one player wins the first two sets, the match is over. If each player/team wins one of the first two sets, the third set simulates a playoff. The concept was created for European TV coverage, but has gained momentum throughout the bowling world, particularly at major tournaments. Shorter games played in sets gives every end a must edge, keeps matches from being runaways, and holds spectator interest. Probably he most visible concession to modernization is the infusion of color on the green. In our part of the world, some of our more adventurous advocates have taken to lawn bowls in technicolor. What would Shakespeare say about those dayglo orange, azure blue and tomato red bowls? Aye, Conrad. That s the rub! And now we have team shirts in pastels and multi-colors, many with Picasso-ish designs. Overseas, international bowlers are now wearing team uniforms, something on the order of basketball warm-ups. Remember when commercial logos were a bowling green no-no? While these team uniforms are far from the logo obsessive NASCAR outfits, they nonetheless ain t your grandfather s lawn bowling whites! ASKED: Any new hip, out-of-the-ordinary ideas to promote lawn bowling in Southern California? CRYSTAL BOWLS: Well, we participated last year in AARP s national conven- tion in Anaheim. It gave rise to a caldron of energy and promotional spirit, including the Southern California Green Jack quarterly newsletter and a terrific new website. The site features just about everything that you re likely to be curious about, or need to know, or should know about your favorite sport. It s actually fun to click onto just to see what s going on. Maybe even see a photo of yourself! The AARP involvement also encouraged more than a few Southland clubs to get new member promotion happy. You ve read about the big-time successes at Newport Harbor, Santa Monica, Holmby Park and Santa Maria LBCs, among others, in previous Green Jacks. Another something the more creative among us might look into is a snappy nickname for lawn bowling. Let s face it, lawn bowling sounds so so yesterday. So dial-up, as kids would say. Overseas, the sport is called bowls, which, in addition to sounding less stimulating than lawn bowling, presents the image of pottery spinning or Japanese fast-food take-out. Don t you think we should be hip and in step with the times? Cool and jiggy like so many of today s commercial enterprises? Examples: Beverages & More (the new wine, beer, spirits chain) calls itself BEVMO. Washington Mutual Savings is WAMU. Orchard Supply & Hardware is OSH. Stores have a buy one, get one sale called a BOGO. And, Southern Californians live in SO CAL. So how does LABO sound in place of lawn bowling? Let s LABO dude! Can you visualize? Hoards of prospects lining up to LABO at clubs all over SO CAL! Ideas wanted. Send them in to: The Crystal Bowl at: trylawnbowling.com or mail to: Suite 301, 1371 S. 3 Page 3 of 8 DEAR DR. GOODWICK.. RX for more consistent excellence The Champion s Secret! Have you ever wondered if there is a most important component of being an excellent lawn bowler? And if there is, what is it? Most excellent bowlers agree that it s not in the grip, stance, or arm motion. For them, having a clear MENTAL INTENTION for their shot is the number one factor for lawn bowling excellence. The considerations that come together to form a bowler s mental intention are so basic that most of them are unconsciously computed. Even when the bowler is not aware, there are a list of questions that are asked and answered at some mental level before every shot: Stay in the game or burn the end? Draw to the jack or drive it out? Lay down a block or set up a catcher? Wick off one of theirs or bump up one of yours? Go for shot or try to cut down their score? And of course, once the intention has been identified, is the better path forehand or backhand? Top bowlers are in the game so intently that these questions (and much more!) are always being considered. By the time s/he s decided what s the best shot to play, s/he has a very precise mental picture of the shot s desired outcome. This is the champions secret, and it s available to every one of us! Sports psychologists have been advancing this principle for years: Given generally equal abilities, the bowler (or archer, or golfer, etc.,) who mentally pictures the process and the positive outcome of their imminent shot is far more likely to produce it than the competitor who doesn t. Good luck can win an end, but tournaments are won by realized intentions. The Doctor Advises. Your competition is the pattern, NOT the person. Every bowler takes the mat facing exactly the same challenge: to affect the head so that it enhances his or her team s current or potential point status. Disregard the opponent, and just play the head. The Southwest Division Winter League kicks-off its third season in December. The League will run from December thru March, featuring male and/or female bowlers in good natured competition representing their home clubs. According to League chief Bob Ratcliffe, the competition will be regionalized and very sensitive to geographical and travel considerations. Ratcliffe told TGJ there will again be two tiers of competition: Trophy League, with an accent on the competitive aspect, involving more experienced and accomplished bowlers. Development League, combining competitiveness and sociability. Designed for both mentor-minded experienced bowlers, veteran rollers who seldom hit the tournament circuit, and new enthusiasts looking to further develop their game. Teams will consist of four players of any gender mix (and substitutes, if desired) playing one rinks match WINTER LEAGUE LAUNCHES THIRD SEASON and two pairs games per play-date. Clubs can enter as many teams it wishes, and choose the league each team prefers to enter. Over the duration of the December-March schedule, each team will have 6-7 play-dates, at least half of them at their home green. One of the league s most accommodating features is its flexible scheduling of weekly matches. Entries require a one-time $30 fee for an entire team. Winning teams will be awarded a championship plaque, and have their name engraved on the League s permanent trophy, which will reside in the champion club s possession until the next year s winners are crowned. Adds Ratcliffe: The Winter League was founded several years ago to provide an environment for Southern California bowlers of all levels of experience that combines competitiveness with the opportunities to socialize with other Southland bowlers. It is intended to support and develop the clubs, as they are the basic social unit of the Division.
4 Page 4 of 8 LOCALS SWEEP MEN S EVENTS AT NATIONAL OPEN The 273 competitors came from Australia, Canada, England, Guernsey, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Philippines and every region of the U.S.L.B.A. But it was a group of Southern Californians who won men s championship laurels in every event at the 2007 National Open Tournament, October 13-18, in Orange County, California. Amid a tough field of competition, Oaks North s Phil Salt won the Men s Singles, Loren Dion (Santa Barbara) and Phil Dunn (Santa Monica) took the Pairs championship, and the foursome of Michael Siddall (Laguna Beach), Steve Smith (San D i e g o ), C h a r l i e H e r b e r t (Newport H a r b o r ) Phil Salt, 2007 Open Singles Champion, left, with National Open Bowler of the Tournament Michael Siddall, who was runner-up in Singles and skip of the Rinks championship foursome. and Bill Brault (San D i e g o ) c a p t u r e d the Men s R i n k s. Veteran p u n d i t s could not recall the last time b o w l e r s from one U.S.L.B.A. division had swept all three men s events at a National Open Tournament. Runners-up in the s of each event were: Singles 2. Siddall (Laguna Beach), 3. Isaacman (Newport), 4. Souza (Sun City, AZ). Pairs 2. Davies & Simpson 2007 Open Rinks champs: (l-r) Steve Smith, Charlie Herbert, Michael Siddall and Bill Brault (Scotland), 3. Heard (England) & Burnoski (San Francisco). Rinks 2. A number of Southern California LBCs have had problems controlling PEARLWORT BIRDSEYE on their green for many years. Pearlwort is a cold weather weed. If not controlled properly the weed will take over a green within a few seasons. According to Amador Martinez, greenskeeper at Oxnard, this weed can be successfully controlled with Speed Zone Southern Broadleaf Herbicide for Turf. Follow the herbicide label to ensure not to harm the tif-green hybrid bermuda grass. Speed Zone is a restrictive herbicide. At Oxnard, says Martinez, I applied Speed Zone at the following rate: 2 oz of SZ to one gallon of water. At this rate I applied a formulation of 14 gallons to the green. It took three days to notice the effect of the herbicide on the weeds. A slight discoloration to the turf was evident. However, in a few days the turf had recovered and was back to normal. It took two additional weeks to completely kill the pearlwort weed, and there was no harm to the turf. The next step is to apply a selective pre-emergence herbicide for control of broadleaf weeds in established turf. At Oxnard, adds Martinez, I apply Gallery 75 Dry Flowable at the recommended rate. Got Questions? Amador can be reached at: amadorm@roadrunner.com NEW RULES You Should Know By Conrad Melton, USLBA Head Umpire to comply, but not rolled to the replay end. New Rule A bowl or jack moved while marking or measuring should be replaced by the opposing player. If moved by an umpire, it should be replaced by that umpire. New Rule When measuring the distance of the jack from the mat to see if it is long enough, the entire jack must be beyond the minimal required distance. New Rule If, before either team has delivered a bowl, a player notices that the wrong team has delivered the jack, the correct team shall re-start the end. But, if each team has delivered one bowl and a player notices that the wrong team delivered the jack, play on that end should continue in that order.
