1 Summer 2007 Volume IV, Issue 3 Southern California, home of lawn bowling s Southwest Division of USLBA, will send send six qualifiers to the 2007 United States Championships finals in Sun City, Arizona, October 29 November 2. Men s qualifiers are: Singles Mert Isaacman (Newport Harbor LBC) and Jim Olson (San Diego); Pairs (photos above) Liam Courtney (Santa Anita) & Bill Brault (San Diego), and Bill Hiscock & Gery Wagner (both San Diego). Women s qualifiers: Bill Brault, left, and Liam Courtney Singles Katy SO. CAL S BEST VIE FOR U.S. TITLES Stone (Long Beach) and Rosa Gandara (Laguna Beach); Pairs Eva Lee (Newport Harbor) & Kim Heiser (Laguna Beach), and Robin Olson (San Diego) & Tanya Hill (Laguna Beach). Gandara is attempting a three-peat of the Singles title, as she defends the championship she has captured the past two years. Stone will be looking for a repeat of her 2000 victory in the event. Southwest women have won the U.S. Singles championship seven consecutive years, and 15 times over the past 20 years. Robin Olson and Stone are also past Pairs titlists, Olson winning in 2001 (with Pat Gonzales), and Stone in 2005 (with Maryna Hyland). On the men s side, Jim Olson won the 2003 U.S. Singles and Isaacman was U.S. Pairs champion in 2003 (with Simon Meyerowitz). The Olson s are husband and wife. The U.S. Championships are this country s prestige bowls event. Every fall season, each of the seven regional divisions of Gery Wagner, left, and Bill Hiscock the USLBA sends its top singles player and pairs team to the annual Championships. Top players/teams are determined by a series of playdowns within each of these divisions. The Southwest Division, by virtue of it having the largest membership in the national association, qualifies a double entry to these annual Championships. The SWD playdowns took place during the month of June. 2 Page 2 of 8 ASKED: Does lawn bowling have a chance to ever be part of the Olympics? CRYSTAL BOWL: There s always the chance. But it s unlikely unless it s indoor bowls, which could fit into the Winter Olympics program. The World Bowls federation consists of more than 40 nations, more countries than probably half the sports/events included in the summer and winter Olympics. But the other sports got involved generations ago, when the window of opportunity was open. Lawn bowls leadership once-upon-a-time chose not to involve the sport in the Olympics, as did the honchos for rugby, cricket and several other sports. A lot more politics and commerciality are involved in today s decisions. We hear conversation about lawn bowls needing a larger number of participating countries to qualify for the Games. More likely it has to do with the logistics and costs of housing-feeding another large group of athletes and absence of commercial support. Keep in mind that beach volleyball got on the summer Olympics menu with only four participating countries. But the sport had the financial backing of the major brewing companies, among others, and featured hard, young bodies in shorts and bikinis. Sans the previous description, bowls offers interesting and cost effective television The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held their 31st City of Hope Triples Tournament on May 12th. Twenty-four entries included teams from Long Beach, Laguna Beach, Hemet, Riverside, Alhambra, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Friendly Valley, Newport Harbor, Santa Ana and Sun City. THE CRYSTAL BOWL possibilities. And, indoor bowls would be a good companion to the newest darling of Winter Olympics, curling. Another option is for the Olympic family to consider the quadrennial World Bowls Championships (next year in New Zealand) an Olympics-sanctioned event, as it has the World Championships of several other sports. The champion, runners-up and third place finishers of the World Championships would be dually designated gold, silver and bronze Olympic winners. This type of designation eliminates concerns for lodging, meals and security requirements at already over-crowded Olympic venues. When all the hypotheses are said and done, none of the above have a chance in reality unless and until the world bowls community makes a professional effort to make it happen. ASKED: How does somebody get on one of the U.S. teams that go to such interesting places as Ayr, Scotland (Atlantic Rim Championships), Christchurch, New Zealand (Asia-Pacific Championships), and tournaments in Hong Kong, Melbourne and Kuala Lampur? CRYSTAL BOWL: The wise-guy s answer is: practice, practice, practice. The straight answer is: Anyone, men and women, can apply for the United States National Team. Men can receive an application from the National Team Selectors chairman Ed Quo, whose Fountain Valley, CA address is found in the Southwest Division membership directory or at website. The City of Hope Triples is a benefit event to raise money for cancer research. All entry fees and any other money collected more than $3,000 was turned over to Mrs. Mickie Dufrene of the Together for Hope auxiliary in Whittier. Mickie is known as The Cookie Lady because for many years she and her family attend the City of Hope tournament and bring a variety of home made cookies and bottled water for the bowlers. The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club furnishes a luncheon, and Gayle and Jim Plunkett foot the bill, aided by Ralph s Market in Pasadena s Hastings Ranch, and the Ralph s Market on West Huntington Drive in Arcadia. This year the winning team on the A green (experienced bowlers) was a trio of Santa Monica and Holmby Park club Women who wish to be a team candidate should request an application from Dana Lum, women s National Team chairperson, or SW representative, Sybil Bernash, of Irvine, CA. Lum s address is found at: www. bowlsamerica.org (TEAM USA page). Bernash s information is found in the SWD membership directory and at ASKED: Are there lawn bowling professionals? CRYSTAL BOWL: Yes. There is a professional side to our sport, but they don t usually refer to the game as lawn bowling. Because the sport is played indoors as well as outdoors around the world, it s usually referred to as bowls. Nowadays, there are men and women who make their living as bowls professionals. Throughout the Commonwealth countries, as well as others, tournament prize money, product endorsements, and positions as coaching pros at country clubs provide a living for the game s top players. For the ambitious among you, the Professional Bowls Association (PBA) exists in the U.S. Once a year, usually in Southern California, the PBA has a week of competitions to determine which entrants will qualify for a handful of international tournaments across the pond. Anyone is welcome to join the PBA and try their luck. Expenses for these PBA events, should you qualify, are generally picked up by the sponsoring organizations. Interested parties should check out the PBA at: www. bowlsamerica. org LAWN BOWLERS SCORE BIG FOR CITY OF HOPE members (see left, r-l): Phil Dunn, Marty Bierman and Moses Rachmanov. B green champions (above) were all from Riverside: Lucile Burkholder, Marti Worley and Sharene Greene.
3 Page 3 of 8 DEAR DR. GOODWICK.. RX for more consistent excellence Dear Dr. Goodwick, I bowl pretty well but sometimes I feel I should be doing better. I play almost every day in the daily draw. Isn t that enough practice? Besides, I ve heard other bowlers say: Practice is overrated. What do you think? Non-Practicer Dear Non, They re pulling your leg. Practice is critical if you want to become consistently excellent; which, by the way, is every bowler s goal, whether they realize it or not. Here are two of the best drills you can do: the Garbage Can Lid (GCL) and the Four Jacks. The GCL is about reproducibility. Roll your first bowl short, or medium or long, but so it finishes close to the centerline. Using the same hand, draw to that bowl with your remaining 3 bowls. This drill teaches you to duplicate your delivery. You hit the jackpot if you can cover all four bowls with a garbage can lid. Keep score with this easy scoring system: each bowl within 1-foot of the original bowl = 9 points; bowls 1 to 2 from the original bowl = 6 points; 2 to 3 away earns you 3 points; bowls further than 3 away = 0. Your GCL with this scoring has a diameter of 6-feet, which may not win you much fame or fortune at the National Open Tournament, but will certainly boost you to legendary status at your club. Credit Ed Quo for popularizing this drill in the SWD. The Four Jack Drill: Set one jack on center at the hog line and the other two yards from the ditch. Place the mat line at 2-yards. Set up the adjacent rink the same way, but going the opposite direction. Roll to the long jack, then the short one, then long, then short. Use all forehands or all backhands. Then move to the adjacent rink and do the same using the other hand. If you want to see how your skills improve over time, keep score as follows: Bowls coming to rest within 1-foot of the jack = 10 points; within 2 = 8 points; within 3 = 6 points. If your weight is within 3-feet of the target, even though you were too wide or too narrow to get 6 points, give yourself 4 points; more than 3 light or heavy = 0 points. San Diego s 2003 United States Singles Champion, Jim Olson, credits this drill as the foundation of his success. OPEN HOUSE WATCH The Santa Maria LBC held an open house Saturday, June 18. Previous SML- BC open houses have attracted many visitors but resulted in few new members. This time around, they borrowed some ideas from Newport Harbor s successful May effort and achieved surprisingly good results. Santa Maria s members were there in force and they introduced a number of their friends and neighbors to the game. All newcomers were taken out to the green upon arrival and, after brief instruction, were turned loose to bowl. Children were given jacks to roll and they ran all over the place. Santa Maria organizers found the Newport Harbor idea of signing up members on the spot was a very good one. They had never done that before, and had merely encouraged people to sign up for lessons. Offering an Open House special membership rate was also attractive. Refreshments included muffins, juice and coffee in the morning and pizza, salad, cake and ice cream at lunchtime. SMLBC s advertising consisted of the distribution of special Open House invitation fliers and three days of an ad published in the Santa Maria Times. The newspaper ads produced no attendees. A few weeks prior to the open house, four Santa Maria members were invited to participate in the First Annual Combat Bocce Tournament at Vandenberg AFB. They assumed that lawn bowling expertise would make them ideal umpires for this fun event. Combat Bocce is the brainchild of one of the senior officers of the 392nd Training Group. He made up the rules, all in military speak, and the combat name arises from the fact that the courts are laid out on the grass in the form of a cross. Balls, or rounds, were delivered across a demilitarized zone where the two courts cross. A fun time was had by all. While there, the Santa Marians invited everyone to come to their LBC open house, and the senior officer, Bocce Bob, said that they would encourage attendance. Over twenty came, including seven children. Eighteen people joined the club that day, and two of the Vandenberg group were so enthusiastic they have ed a number of their associates to encourage them to come down and participate. Santa Maria s first follow-up session with its new members took place a week later. NEXT ISSUE COPY DEADLINE OCTOBER 30
